Congratulations to 16 year old Kelly Brotherton (Tulliallan) (pictured

major tournament without playing a stroke today, after play was suspended
due to lightning and flash flooding at Baberton. Kelly's two 69's yesterday

Vet's Jamboree
SCOTLAND'S over-50s women's amateur golf team go into the final day of
the Veteran Ladies Golf Association area championship at Seaton Carew
on Thursday with a win over English Midlands under their belts - and a
chance of winning the title.
The Scots, who lost to South of England 5-4 on the first day, beat Midlands
5-4 on Wednesday by winning four of the six singles after losing the foursomes

Well... Baberton had everything today... lots of thunder (no discernable
lightning), thick mist which appeared and disappeared as quick as a blink,
and then steady rain which made the last few matches very uncomfortable
for the players. However they all came through it well, with some terrific
scores...
TULLIALLAN teenager Kelly Brotherton shot two rounds of 69 at Baberton
Golf Club today to be the surprise leader with an aggregate of six-under-par
138 with one round to go in the BP Scottish Under-21 girls' open stroke-play

cap Clare Queen (Drumpellier & Strathclyde University) make up the

DEFENDING champion Anne Laing (Vale of Leven) finished fourth in the
Irish women's open amateur stroke-play golf championship at Dundalk
Golf Club today.
Anne, third overnight, had rounds of 72, 73 and 77 against the par
and CSS of 73 for a 54-hole total of three-over-par 222 - eight strokes
behind Rebecca Coakley (Carlow) and Martina Gillen (Beaverstown).

Irish Open Strokeplay Championship, Dundalk Golf Club
DEFENDING champion Anne Laing from Vale of Leven has a six-stroke
leeway to make up over Sunday's final 36 holes if she is to retain
the Irish women's open amateur stroke-play championship, with the
prizes sponsored by Waterford Crystal, at Dundalk Golf Club.
Anne, first winner of the British women's mid-amateur championship
at The Berkshire recently, shot steady rounds of 72 and 73 for a
halfway total of 145. That score was one under par but only good
enough to see her in third place overnight.
Rebecca Coakley from Carlow, who halted Curtis Cup player Alison
Coffey's bid to win the Irish women's closed title for a third year
in a row by beating her 4 and 3 in the final back in late June,
is the three-stroke leader from Martina Gillen, whom she beat in
the semi-finals of their national championship.

Curtis Cup
Good Luck to our Curtis Cup girls, Heather Stirling and Vikki Laing, and
the rest of Pam Benka's team, who fly out to the States today to take
on the Americans at Fox Chapel Golf Club, Pittsburgh, Pa. They'll have
a pretty full programme of practice and receptions before the big match

As you can see... Heather Stirling (Bridge of Allen) with 3410 points
has won by a landslide from Lynn Kenny (Dunblane) (1780 points)
and Anne Laing (Vale of Leven) (1705 points).
Congratulations to Heather from kirkwoodgolf on a superb year.

East of Scotland Girls' Championship
Seventeen-year old Laura Aitken (Falkirk Tryst) won the East of Scotland
Girls Championship today at rain-soaked Turnhouse after a considerable
tussle with twelve-year old Jane Turner (Glencorse). The match finished
at the seventeenth, with Laura the victor by 2&1.
In the morning semifinals, Laura beat Amanda Edwards (Liberton) by
1 hole after being two down at the turn, and Jane beat Lesley Rolland
(Dunfermline) at the 19th. Report

Monday 22nd July
East of Scotland Girls Summer Meeting and Championship
Laura Aitken (Falkirk Tryst) led the qualifiers with an 82 on the better
inward half from Lesley Rolland (Dunfermline) in the East of Scotland
Girls' Summer Meeting at Turnhouse this morning. Hannah Harvey (St Regulus)
won the best silver handicap prize with a nett 69, closely followed by
Lesley Rolland with a nett 70. Amanda Forrest (Broomieknowe) took the
Bronze handicap prize with a net 72. The CSS matched the SSS at 73.
The top eight scratch scores qualified for the matchplay stages of the
Championship.
In the first round of the matchplay, the top seed Laura Aitken was all
square with Stephanie Crolla (Longniddry) at the turn and pulled away
to win by 2&1. Amanda Edwards (Liberton) beat Gillian Davidson (Saline)
by a similar margin. The two youngest qualifiers met each other in the
third match where Jane Turner (Glencorse) managed to beat Hannah Harvey
(St Regulus) by 3&2. In the final tie, second seed, Lesley Rolland
(Dunfermline) beat Catherine Paterson (Longniddry) by 5&4.

Scottish Girls' Team for Home Internationals at the Hermitage
There are four new caps in the Scotland team for the girls' home international
matches at The Hermitage Golf Club, near Dublin from August 13 to 15.
They are Kelly Brotherton (Tulliallan), Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze),
Lesley Hendry (Routenburn) and Gemma Webster (Hilton Park). Report

THERE are three players new to the women's home internationals matches
in the team selected for the three-day event against England, Ireland
and Wales at The Berkshire Golf Club, Ascot from August 21 to 23.

WHAT a day for Gemma Webster at the BP Scottish girls championship at
sunny Powfoot golf course on the Solway Firth today.
In her morning first-round tie, the Hilton Park player knocked out the
highly-rated Sharon Main from Lossiemouth with a hole in one with a seven-iron
at the 130yd 15th on her way to a shock 4 and 2 win, Then Miss Webster
performed an even bigger giant-killing act in the afternoon to remove
the top seed and the title-favourite, Jenna Wilson (Strathaven) from the
championship. Gemma's par golf was good enough to see her win by one hole.

Another dreich day here in Gullane.... that fine drizzle that gets
under your umbrella, so there is little point in putting it up!

Two representatives, a boy and a girl, from each country have been
invited to play this week in the World Junior Open. Scotland is represented
by 12 year old Lindsey Hunter (Dalmahoy). Here is Lindsey meeting Sir

Sheila McMurtrie (Dalbeattie) won the Galloway women's county golf championship
for the third year in a row and the seventh time in all at Wigtownshire

THERE are two winners of the Highland Open women's amateur tournament
following this year's event at Pitlochry. That's because the final between
Jillian Milne (Milnathort) and Louise Fraser from Kingsknowe had to be

If you are around East Lothian during the Practice Days for the Open next
week then please call in at a Golf Collectors Antique Fair that
my husband, David, and I are organising at the Mallard Hotel, East Links
Road, Gullane on Tuesday 16th July from 12noon until 5pm.
Sixteeen Golf Collectors from all over Britain are taking tables and will
be displaying and selling their surplus stock. Two golf artists, Robert
Gould and Chico Ramos, will also be displaying oils and watercolours.
If you are interested in starting a golf collection, acquiring sometrhing
special, getting something valued, selling some unwanted old golf
items or commisioning an artist to paint your favorite scene, then please
come along.
The Mallard Hotel serves bar lunches and drinks so make it a stopping
off point to/from your trip to Tuesday's Practice Day. If you want to

BRITISH OPEN MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
GB & I squad member, Anne Laing (Vale of Leven), became the first
British Mid-Amateur Champion, after a nail-biting tussle with Kerry Smith
& Emma Duggleby. Bunkered on the last hole Anne had a spectacular
up and down to lift the title by one shot. Look at the LGU
Website for full results. Anne finished on 214 with rounds of 73,
69 and 72. Next Scot was Ruth Rankin (Lanark) in 14th place with 76,76,82=234.
Pam Williamson (Baberton) was 81,80,82=243 and Claire Hargan (Prestonfield)
scored 83,85,87=255.
East of Scotland Championship

European Lady Junior Team Championship
The Scottish Team flies out tomorrow to European Lady Junior Team Championship
at Moscow City Golf Club, Russia, July 9-13. Good luck to Pam Feggans
(Barassie), Louise Kenney (Pitreavie and Iowa State), Susannah Laing (Troon
Ladies and University of San Francisco), Vikki Laing (Musselbuirgh and
University of California), Clare Queen (Drumpellier and Strathclyde),
Jenna Wilson (Strathaven) and their captain Fiona de Vries. We hope to
have results but very much depend on faxes from the Russian Golf Federation.

SLGA Training Chairman, Pat Hutton, whizzing through Lanark on her way
to Newcastle and then on to the European Junior Ladies Team Championships
in Moscow, managed to get on her computer long enough to send these two

Woods should be banned
North of Scotland Professional Golfer, Gillian Stewart, has written an
article for the July edition
of "GolfView" in which she says that metal woods should
have been banned when they were first introduced. Controversial or what!!!
"Golfview" is a monthly magazine, edited by Colin Farquharson. If you
want to get "Golfview" posted to you 11 months of the year (not January),
it only costs £15. Details are at the end of the article.

Welsh Stroke-play
Colin's report came in late
last night. When Vikki won the Welsh Stroke-play she was completing more
than a double for herself but one for Scottish golf as a whole because
last weekend Glasgow-born Jack Doherty won the Welsh men's open amateur
