JENNA LEADS FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND AT POWFOOT

JENNA Wilson, the title-favourite from Strathaven, lived up to her pre-tournament rating by leading the field at the end of the first qualifying round of the BP Scottish girls match-play golf championship at Powfoot Golf Club on the Solway Firth shoreline yesterday (Tuesday).
Jenna flew back on Sunday from Moscow where she was a member of the Scotland team who just failed to win bronze medals in the European Under-21 women's team championship and she reached the semi-finals of the Scottish women's championship at Stranraer in May.
Her score of 71 was three under the women's par at Powfoot and gave her a one-stroke lead from the Angus women's county champion Dawn Dewar (Monifieth) and Laura Walker of Nairn Dunbar.
Fears that Miss Dewar's left wrist, strapped up due to tendonitis, might not stand up to 18 holes of golf proved unfounded.
Roseanne Niven, the youngest-ever winner of the Crieff women's club championship recently at the age of 13, had another fine performance in returning a par-matching 74, despite bogeying the 16th and 17th.
After a second qualifying round, the leading 32 will go forward to the match-play stages.
