Scots girls' sound start in Moscow

SCOTLAND made a sound start while England and Ireland surprisingly brought up the rear in the first qualifying round of the European junior women's team championship at Moscow Country Club, Russia yesterday (Monday).
Spearheaded by 71s from Curtis Cup debutante Vikki Laing from Musselburgh and Drumpellier's Clare Queen, the British girls champion, and a 72 from Susannah Laing (Troon Ladies) the Scots' scored 374 under the best five from six individual scores.
Jenna Wilson (Strathaven) and Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) both had 80s and Pam Feggans (Barassie) was the player with the discarded score, an 81.
That put the Scots in fifth place at the end of the first day behind Germany (362), Spain (370), Sweden (370) and defending champions Italy (374).
Wales were the next best after Scotland of the four home countries with 380 despite a disappointing 79 (the discarded score) from Becky Brewerton). That put the Welsh in seventh place, five places ahead of England whose best individual score was a 76 by Sophie Walker.
Only Ireland (394), last of 13, had a worse team total than the English. They too failed to produce an individual score in the low 70s. Martin Gillen was their best with a 76.
The eight countries with the lowest team aggregates at the end of the second qualifying round will make up the championship match-play pool with the following automatic draw:
No 1 v No 8
No 4 v No 5
No 3 v No 6
No 2 v No 7
Now for some more details about the Scots rounds, provided by SLGA chairman Margaret Mowat from Moscow.
"Clare Queen had four birdies in the first seven holes and reached the turn in 32. She would have broken 70 but for a triple bogey at the 16th.
"The other new girls were a bit nervous but all battled back from bad front nines. Most of them came home in level or one over par. Pamela Feggans had a 9 at the fifth hole and, to her great credit, came back in level par."
