CHAMPION AND TOP SEED GO OUT IN FIRST
ROUND OF NORTH OF SCOTLAND MATCH-PLAY

TITLE-holder Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies) and leading qualifier Lynne Terry (Cruden Bay) were surprisingly beaten in the first round of the match-play stages of the North of Scotland women's amateur golf championship Downfield, Dundee yesterday (Tuesday).
Miss Wood was bidding for a delayed hat-trick, having won the championship in 1989 and again last year - but it was not to be.
The Aberdeenshire champion lost by 4 and 3 to Northern Counties team player Jenny Milne from Elgin.
Jenny's joy was not enough to carry her through her quarter-final tie against Sheena Wood's Aberdeenshire team-mate Lyndsey Devenish (Cruden Bay), beaten finalist 12 months ago at Deeside.
Miss Devenish had wriggled off the hook in the morning against Laura McLardy (Murcar) who was two up with four to play and lost on the last green. In the afternoon, Lyndsey won three of the first four holes against Jenny Milne and was never in trouble after that, winning by 3 and 2 to set up a semi-final tie this morning (Wed) against former Angus champion, Ann Ramsay from Kirriemuir.
Ann won the 18th with a par 4 to beat Lorraine Coleman (Peterhead) by one hole in the quarter-finals. Miss Coleman's 3 and 2 morning victim had been Lynne Terry who, for the second year in a row, was the leading qualifier and then beaten in the first round.
The second semi-final this morning will feature Angus county player Ann Hay (Letham Grange) against Carol Wilson (Murcar) who will be out to avenge family honour. Ann beat Carol's mother Pat, the Aberdeenshire county captain, by 4 and 3 in the first round.
