PERTHSHIRE farmer's daughter Carly Booth, only 10 years old, became one of the youngest players ever to qualify for the match-play stages of the BP Scottish girls championship for under-18 year olds at Powfoot Golf Club on the Solway Firth shoreline yesterday (Tues).
The little slip of a lass, whose Aberdonian father Wallace Booth, gained Commonwealth Games medals as a wrestler in his heyday, shot two rounds of 84 for an aggregate of 168 to be the 25th of the 32 qualifiers. Carly has improved her handicap to 12 since, at the age of eight she was to be the youngest player known to have acquired an LGU handicap of 20.
Carly plays Emily Ogilvy (Muckhart) in the first round of the match-play this morning.
The top seed is the favourite, Jenna Wilson from Strathaven. She had rounds of 71 and 75 for 146 to finish four shots ahead of Angus women's champion Dawn Dewar (Monfieth) who compiled rounds of 72 and 78 for 150, her wrist, weakened by tendonitis, standing up to the strain of 36 holes in one day.
Carly Booth is not the only one short in years - and inches - to make it through to the match-play stages. Kelsey MacDonald from Nairn Dunbar qualified with rounds of 85 and 82 for 167 and her first-round match against the in-form 13-year-old Roseanne Niven, youngest ever winner of the Crieff women's club championship recently, should be worth going a long way to see. Both players have 12 of a handicap.
Big North hopes Laura Walker (Nairn Dunbar) and Sharon Main (Moray) qualified surprisingly low down the list of 32. Laura followed a very good first round of two-under-par 72 with an 86 for 158.
Sharon Main had a 78 and 84.
But none of these scores returned on Monday count for anything now. It is sudden-death match-play through to the 18-hole final on Friday.
