SCOTLAND will be playing for bronze medals in the European junior
women's golf championship at Moscow Golf and Country Club today
(Saturday) after losing to Germany in the semi-finals yesterday (Fri).
The Germans, leading qualifiers, continued their fine form to beat the
Scots 4 1/2-2 1/2 after the morning foursomes were shared 1-1.
Vikki and Suzie Laing lost to Martina Eberl and Kerstin Honisch 3 and
2 but Clare Queen and Pamela Feggans won by 4 and 3 over Denise Simon
and Steffi Doring.
The top singles was a crucial match. Scotland really needed to win it
to get an edge to carry through the rest of the singles.
Vikki Laing played her heart out but lost on the last green to
Honisch.
Then Denise Simon, semi-finalist in this year's British women's open
amateur championship at Ashburnham and winner of the Portuguese and
Austrian open titles before that, beat Suzie Laing by 2 and 1 in the
second singles.
That put the Germans ahead 3-1 overall and needing only one more point
to reach the final.
Pam Feggans fought well to secure half a point from her square match
with Bettina Hauert and Jenna Wilson kept the Scots' hopes alive by
beating Doring 3 and 2.
That made the overall scoreline Germany 3 1/2, Scotland 2 1/2.
Once again the burden of Scotland winning or losing fell on Clare
Queen in the last singles tie against the German ace, Martina Eberl.
This time Clare could not come up with the vital win. She lost by 4
and 3.
The final will be between Germany and Spain.
Scotland will play Sweden for third place.
