SANDY
SINCLAIR OBE DIES AT 82
SANDY Sinclair, O B E, one of Scotland's leading amateur golfers and
administrators in the post-war era, has died at the age of 82.
Sandy was a regular competitor in the British Amateur championship and
in 1957 reached the last 16 after beating the holder, John Beharrell,
and Walker Cup player Arthur Perowne. He played for Scotland in the Home
Internationals in 1950 and was non-playing captain of the Scottish team
in 1966 and 1967. He won the West of Scotland amateur championship in
1950, the Lanarkshire amateur title in 1952, 1959 and 1961 and was Glasgow
amateur champion in 1961. He was also Scottish Senior Champion in 1979
and 1984.
As an administrator, Sandy was Chairman of the R&A Selection Committee
from 1969 to 1975, President of the Scottish Golf Union from 1976 to 1978,
Chairman of the Amateur Status Committee from 1979 to 1981 and President
of the European Golf Association from 1981 to 1983. He was captain of
the Royal & Ancient Golf Club in 1988/1989.
Sandy was born in West Kilbride in July 1920 and as well as being a member
of the R&A he was an Honorary member of West Kilbride, Drumpellier, Bothwell
Castle and Royal Troon.
Prior to retirement in 1985 he was an Insurance Broker and was a Director
of Stenhouse Insurance Brokers.
He is survived by his wife Betty and three children.
