Devenish wins North of Scotland title
AMERICAN
college student Lyndsey Devenish from Cruden Bay won the North of Scotland
women's amateur golf championship at Downfield, Dundee yesterday. Lyndsey,
20, beat Ann Hay (Letham Grange) by 3 and 2 in the final to mark up another
achievement to tell her University of San Francisco golfing team-mates
when she returns there after the summer break. A week or so ago Lyndsey
helped Aberdeenshire win the North Division team title to qualify for
the Scottish county finals in September.
Miss Devenish came back from two down in the early stages to beat Ann
Ramsay (Kirriemuir) by two holes in the morning semi-final and she was
one down to Ann Hay after two holes in the afternoon. This time Lyndsey
hit back earlier and after squaring the match at the fourth she had forged
into a four-hole lead after 12. Her opponent prolonged the final by winning
the 13th and 15th with a birdie but drove into the rough at the 16th to
lose the hole and the match.
Aberdeenshire players completed a double when Anne Bowman (McDonald Ellon),
triplet sister of Portlethen Golf Club professional Muriel Thomson, won
the handicap championship. Anne, who plays off seven, beat Jane Yellowlees
(Murrayshall) by 2 and 1 in the final.
