Watson's win "old-old-boys" tournament with a woman on the
team.
After gap of 23 years Watson's won the Cyril Gray Golf Tournament at
Worplesdon on Saturday beating on the way, Fettes 2 1/2 to 1/2 and playing
a woman for the first time in the tournament.
Mrs Jill Nicholson, nee Hutton was persuaded to play and along with Alan
Williamson played off the men's tees and secured a half against the Fettesian
second couple with Jill holing a twenty footer on the last to win the
hole. Watsons then went on to beat Epsom 2 - 1, Rossall 2-1, Stoneyhurst
2 1/2 to 1/2 in the semi final and Old Merchant Taylors 3 -0 in the final.
The team consisted of Alan Williamson, Michael Grosset, Peter Binns,
Alastair Brown, Alf Cattanach and Douglas Neave, with Jill Nicholson playing
in the first round and Michael Grosset replacing her.
The Cyril Gray is played for annually between the 32 schools who joined
the Halford Hewitt most recently and the players must be at least 50years
old The other trophies are the Bernard Darwin for the most senior 16 schools
and the Mellon for the next 16.
