Belgium Junior Championships
Just a quick note to say that all three of the Scots girls were put out of the competiton this morning. Clare Queen (Drumpellier) lost by 2 and 1 to Lien WILLEMS of Belgium, Jenna Wilson (Strathaven) lost by one hole to Vittoria VALVASSORI of Italy in the main Girls' Championship and Kelly Brotherton (Tulliallan) lost by 4 and 2 to Christel BOELJON of the Netherlands in the Tigresses section. Canadian Senior Ladies Championship
Globe-trotting Pam Williamson (Baberton) finished fifth equal with a final round of 80 for a total of 235 in the Canadian Ladies Golf Association Seniors Championship at the Riverside Country Club in Saint John, New Brunswick. The winner was Alison Murdoch of Vancouver, British Columbia who scored 74-79-77 for 230. Report

PROLONGED rain wiped out the first qualifying round in the boys' championship and reduced the girls to only nine holes on Tuesday as the Belgian Junior International Open championships, sponsored by Saab, begano at Royal Golf Club of Belgium near Brussels.
Clare Queen from Drumpellier was in sixth place overnight after a score of one-over-par 37.

Helen Faulds (Bearsden), a member of the title-winning Scotland team in the recent Veteran Ladies Golfing Association area championship at Seaton Carew, won the West Division championship of the Scottish Veteran LGA at Renfrew Golf Club yesterday. Report

Isobel Macintosh won the Highland Veterans Championship back in May when she beat Christine McAndrew (Nairn Dunbar) by 4 and 3 in the final over her home course of Inverness. Report

Tuesday 27th August

FOUR SCOTS BID FOR BRITISH STROKE-PLAY TITLE
ONLY four Scots have entered the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship over 72 holes at Hunstanton Golf Club, Norfolk from September 11 to 13. They are Scottish champion Heather Stirling (Bridge of Allan), Cara Gruber and Lynn Kenny (Stirling University), and Clare Queen (Drumpellier).
Rebecca Hudson (Wheatley), winner of the title at Barassie last year, is not defending as she is turning professional and will be competing in qualifying events in the United States.
Heather Stirling is also leaving the amateur ranks but will not do so until the European Women's Tour Qualifying School in France later in the year.
Former Scottish champion Linzi Morton from Tulliallan, another absentee from the field for the British stroke-play, is taking the same route to the professional ranks as Rebecca Hudson, i.e. through openings in America.
Next year the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship will revert to its traditional August dates (20 to 22) and the Ladies Golf Union will be hoping that this will bring back the Continental players who have not supported the event since its switch to September when it clashes with various national competitions in Europe.
The total number of entries for Hunstanton is only 76.

County Finals
BRITISH mid-amateur champion Anne Laing (Vale of Leven), a member of the Scotland team who went so close to winning the women's home internationals title at The Berkshire last week, will spearhead the Dunbartonshire & Argyll team for the Scottish women's county championship finals at Portpatrick Dunskey from September 20 to 22. Miss Laing, a lecturer at Elmwood College, Cupar, was unavailable to play in her county championship but will get time off to play at Portpatrick.
Team is: Judy Galbraith (Cowal), Claire Hargan (Prestonfield), Ashley Kerr (Windyhill), Anne Laing (Vale of Leven), Fiona McLean (Hilton Park), Claire McNeil (Milngavie), Louisa Ruane (Cardross), Gemma Webster (Hilton Park). Fiona Cowan is the side's non-playing captain.

HEATHER STIRLING NAMED IN GB&I ESPIRITO SANTO TROPHY TEAM Scottish champion Heather Stirling has had the seal set on the greatest season of her golfing life when it was announced by the Ladies Golf Union at the conclusion of the women's home internationals at The Berkshire Golf Club that she had been selected as one of the team of three to represent Great Britain & Ireland in the women's world amateur team championship for the Espirito Santo Trophy at Kuala Lumpur in October. England star Rebecca Hudson and past Irish champion Alison Coffey were unavailable for selection. Miss Hudson is turning professional and Miss Coffey has to concentrate on her Civil Engineering career for the immediate future. The team is: Becky Brewerton (Abergele and Wales). England win again!

Last day summary
Defending champions England won the title for the 10th time in the past 11 years after an exciting final day at The Berkshire.
All four countries had one point apiece after the first two days and in the end England beat Wales and Scotland beat Ireland to head the table with 2pt apiece. The championship was decided on a games-won countback and England had a 16-14 1/2pt edge over Scotland in the tie-breaker.
At one stage of the final session of singles, it looked as if Wales might hold England to a draw, despite losing the foursomes 2-1 but the English team did not lose any of their ties that went to the 18th green.
The top game between Rebecca Hudson and Becky Brewerton finished all square after the Welsh girl had been two up for a long way. Wins by Fame More, Alex Keighley, Emma Duggleby and Kerry Smith gave England victory over Wales by 6 1/2-2 1/2.
Scotland beat Ireland 6-3 after taking a 2pt lead in the foursomes. Martin Gillen beat Curtis Cup player Heather Stirling and Alison Coffey, who also played for GB&I in the United States, lost on the last green to Clare Queen.
England's Kerry Smith was the most successful player of the tournament, ending with 5 1/2pt out of six.

In depth Singles Report
ENGLAND v SCOTLAND
Rebecca Hudson had an epic struggle with Becky Brewerton, which finished all square when the Welsh girl three-putted the 18th green to lose the lead she had enjoyed for most of the match. Brewerton won the sixth to go two up and regained that margin of lead at the eighth after Hudson won the seventh. Holes nine to 12 were halved in an enthralling struggle before Hudson won the 13th to be one down again and the 16th to square the contest. Then Brewerton won the 17th to be one up on the 18th tee. Hudson won the last with a par 4 after Brewerton three-putted for a bogey 5.
Fame More beat Sarah Jones by one hole after being three up at the turn. Jones cut the deficit on the inward half, winning the 14th and 15th to be one down with three to play. More held her at bay by halving the last three holes.
Alex Keighley beat Anna Highgate by one hole, laying the foundations for her win by winning the seventh, eighth and ninth to be three up at the turn. Highgate came back into the picture by winning the 12th, 15th and 16th to be all square with two to play. The 17th was halved and Keighley won the last for victory.
Louise Davis scored Wales' first point in the singles by beating Sarah Heath 2 and 1. Heath was two up after three but Davis countered by winning the fifth, sixth and seventh to be one up on the eighth tee. The Welsh girl went two up by winning the 12th but then lost the 13th and 14th to be pulled back to level. Davis won the 16th and 17th for victory.
Emma Duggleby clinched victory over Wales by beating Stephanie Evans 2 and 1 despite being one down with four to play. The English player squared the match at the 15th and then took the 16th and 17th as well for victory.
Kerry Smith ensured that she would finish the leading points-scorer for England when she beat Kate Phillips by one hole to earn 5 1/2pt out of six over the three days. Smith was two up after seven but Phillips rallied to square the match at the 10th and go one up at the 11th. After a sequence of four halved holes, Smith won the 16th to draw level and then the 18th for victory.

IRELAND v SCOTLAND
Martin Gillen had a good 4 and 3 win over Curtis Cup player Heather Stirling. The Scot was one up after three holes but lost the fourth and the sixth and was never level again after that. Gillen was one up at the turn and then took the 12th and 13th to be in a commanding position.
Anne Laing staged a great fightback to beat Tricia Mangan by 2 and 1 after being three down on the seventh tee. The Scot had squared the match by the 13th and then, with her confidence restored, she went two up and finished the tie on the 17th green.
Heather Nolan put a second point for Ireland on the board with a 4 and 2 win over former Scottish champion Linzi Morton. Nolan never looked back after going two up after only four holes. She won the seventh to be three up and the ninth to go four ahead. Morton did win back a hole but Nolan finished the match by winning the 16th.
Lesley Mackay, whose long-term wrist injury prevented her from playing twice a day, won her third singles match for Scotland by beating Darragh McGowan 6 and 5. Mackay won the first, the fifth, sixth and eighth to be four up at the turn. The Irish girl halted the slide by winning the 10th but Mackay was not to be stopped. She won the 11th, 12th and 13th to end the match.
Clare Queen scored a notable win over Curtis Cup player Alison Coffey, beating her on the last green. Queen went two up after only four holes but Coffey came back at her to square the match at the seventh. Coffey then acquired a one-hole edge until Queen won the 15th to square it and the 17th to show one up with one to play. The 18th was halved.
Marian Riordan finished all square with former Scottish champion Lynn Kenny who had been two up twice in the first 11 holes. Then the Irish newcomer won the 12th and 13th to quare the match and continued her revival to win the 17th to be one up with one to play. Kenny was able to win the last to share the honours.

Day 3 lunchtime summary
England and Scotland improved their chances of winning the title at The Berkshire when they were successful in the morning foursomes on the third day which had started with all four countries having 1 point to their credit.
England lost the top foursomes tie to Wales in the shape of Becky Brewerton and Sarah Jones (3 and 2 winners over Rebecca Hudson and Kirsty Fisher) but wins by Emma Duggleby and Fame More (2 and 1 over Kathryn Evans and Louise Davis) and by Kerry Smith and Sara Garbutt (4 and 3 over Anna Highgate and Kate Phillips) put the defending champions into a 2-1 lead with the six afternoon singles to come.
Scotland led Ireland 2 1/2-1/2 from the morning foursomes, thanks to a 5 and 3 win in the top game by Heather Stirling and Susie Laing over Alison Coffey and Tricia Mangan. Lynn Kenny and Clare Queen won the last two holes to snatch a halved match with Sinead Keane and Martina Gillen. Scotland gained their second morning success when Anne Laing and Linzi Morton beat Eileen Rose Power and Marian Riordan by two holes after being two up for most of the inward half before losing the 17th.

In depth report of morning foursomes
ENGLAND v WALES
Becky Brewerton and Sarah Jones won a high-quality lead-off foursomes for Wales, beating Rebecca Hudson and Kirsty Fisher by 3 and 2 in a tie in which there was no shortage of birdies. Brewerton and Jones, who were never in arrears throughout the tie, won the fourth and fifth to go two up but lost the eighth and ninth to be pulled back to all square. The Welsh pair moved back into the lead with a win at the 10th and took the 15th and 16th for victory.
Emma Duggleby and Fame More levelled it for England with a 2 and 1 win over Kathryn Evans and Louise Davis. The Welsh pair held the lead through the fourth and fifth but after Duggleby and More had squared it at the sixth, Evans and Davis never had the honour again. All square at the turn, the England partnership won the 10th and the 12th, lost the 13th but went two up again by winning the 16th and a half at the next ended the match.
Kerry Smith and Sara Garbutt put England in for lunch with a 2-1 lead by beating Anna Highgate and Kate Phillips 4 and 3. The English pair surged into a three-hole lead in the early stages by winning the first, fourth and fifth. Highgate and Phillips were never able to put them under pressure after that. Smith and Garbutt went four up at the 11th and maintained that lead until the Welsh ran out of holes.
IRELAND v SCOTLAND
Heather Stirling and Susie Laing beat Alison Coffey and Tricia Mangan by 5 and 3 after winning the first, second, third, fifth and seventh to be five holes up. Coffey and Mangan won back the eighth and the 10th but the Scots restored their four-hole lead at the 11th and won the 15th to finish the tie.
Lynn Kenny and Clare Queen, two down with two to play against Sinead Keane and Martin Gillen, won the 17th, where the Irish were in the bushes off the tee, and also the 18th where Queen played the shot of the round, a seven-iron that came to rest 12 inches short of the hole. That birdie 3 for the Scots halved the contest. The match had been all square at the turn but Keane and Gillen looked to have taken a grip on the contest when they won the 11th, 12th and 13th. The Scots' revival began with a success at the 14th.
Anne Laing and Linzi Morton gave the Scots a 2 point lunch-time lead by beating Eileen Rose Power and Marian Riordan by two holes. After an even outward half, the Scots edged ahead at the 10th and doubled their lead at the 12th. The Irish pair won back the 17th to be one down on the last tee but Laing and Morton won the 18th.

Scotland captain, Elaine Farquharson-Black, said she was disappointed at losing to England by a 2pt margin when it was a much closer contest that the scoreline suggested.
"Rebecca Hudson and Kirsty Fisher got up and down all down from off the green to get halves or win holes in the foursomes and Heather Stirling and Susie Laing were held by them to a square match," said Elaine. "I felt we deserved to win that one and that would have given us a 2-l lead at lunchtime and that would have been a major boost the players before the singles.
"We lost the singles 4-2 but here again it could have been 3-3. Clare Queen missed a yard putt at the 17th that would have put her one up on Alex Keighley on the 18th tee. Instead, she missed it and they halved the last.
"Lynn Kenny and Kerry Smith had an amazing total of birdies between them in their tie. Lynn did very well to come back from two down to get a halved match.
"And Lesley Mackay did well again to win her singles match for the second day in a row although she knows she is not 100 per cent fit.
"Heather Stirling lost by 5 and 4 in the top singles match but Rebecca Hudson was three under par.
"There are a lot of plus points that don't show on the scoreboard. We're not out of it yet. Team spirit is good. We need a big win over Ireland and hope that Wales beat England. If that happens we can win the title on a games-won countback."
Elaine has named an unchanged line-up for the final-day foursomes against Ireland.

The stage is set for a marvellous final day at The Berkshire Golf Club with all four countries having won once and lost once.
Wales, who had lost to Scotland on the first day, fought back into the title picture by beating Ireland, conquerors of defending champions England on Wednesday, by 5-4.
England beat Scotland for the 11th year in a row, winning 6-3 and the final day programme of England v Wales and Scotland v Ireland could result in any one of the four ending as champions, perhaps on a games-won countback.
Rebecca Hudson, the British champion, beat Scottish title-holder and Curtis Cup team-mate Heather Stirling by 5 and 4 in the top singles tie after England and Scotland had shared the morning foursomes. Wins by Fame More and Sarah Heath and half-points from Alex Keighly and Kerry Smith gave England a decisive 4-2 margin from the singles.
Wales beat Ireland, also by taking the singles 4-2 following a 2-1 setback in the foursomes. Becky Brewerton was the inspiration for Wales by beating Curtis Cup player Alison Coffey 4 and 2 in the top singles. Wales also had wins from Anna Highgate, Jo Pritchard and Kate Phillips.

SCOTLAND v ENGLAND
Rebecca Hudson gave England a flyng start to the singles by beating Curtis Cup colleague Heather Stirling by 5 and 4. Stirling won the first hole but after losing the second she was never in the lead again. Hudson won the third, fifth, sixth and seventh to be four up after seven holes. Stirling stopped the English player's charge by winning the eighth but Hudson was not to be denied. She went four up again at the 10th and finished the match with a win at the 14th. It was Hudson's first win of the 2002 series.
England went 2-0 up in the singles when Fame More beat Susie Laing by 3 and 2. More won the third and fourth and was never pulled back to square after that. Laing did win the sixth and eighth but she lost the seventh and went from one to three down when More won the 11th and 12th. The Scot kept her hopes alive by winning the 15th to be two down with three to play but her English opponent closed her out by winning the 16th.
Lesley Mackay opened the Scots' singles points account by beating Kirsty Fisher 4 and 3. The Scot led by one hole after six holes and then took a grip on the proceedings by winning the seventh and eighth to be three up at the turn. Fisher's revival was held at bay with three halved holes before Mackay won the 12th to go four up. The Scot lost the 13th but won the 15th for the match.
Sarah Heath beat Pamela Feggans by 4 and 2 in a tie between two players having their first outing of the series. Feggans was one up after five holes but was not able to regain the lead after losing the sixth and the ninth to be one down at the turn. Feggans was able to square the match at the 10th but lost the 12th to be one down and then the 14th, 15th and 16th were won by Heath for the match.
Clare Queen and Alex Keighley had a rare old battle which fittingly finished all square. There was never more than a hole in it either way with first Queen having the advantage and then Keighley having the honour. Queen was one up after 12 holes but Keighley won the 13th and the remaining holes were halved. That half point clinched overall victory for England with 5pt on the board. There was another halved match in the last tie to finish,
Lynn Kenny coming back from two down on the 12th tee against Kerry Smith to gain half a point. Kenny won the 12th and 13th but then lost the 14th to a birdie but she squared it at 17th and the 18th was halved.

WALES v IRELAND
Wales had a singles point on the board before 4.30pm with Anna Highgate winning by 8 and 6 over Irish debutante Heather Nolan who won only one hole, the fifth. Highgate won the first, second, fourth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, 10th and 12th.
Becky Brewerton scored a big win in the top singles, beating Alison Coffey by 4 and 2. Coffey won the fourth but Brewerton squared the match at the sixth and went one up at the seventh ... and was never pulled back to level after that. The Welsh player won the 10th and 12th to go three up and clinched victory on the 16th green.
Kate Phillips made it 2-0 for Wales in the singles when she beat former Irish champion Eileen Rose Power 4 and 3. Phillips jumped into a two-hole lead by winning the second and third.
Ireland's Tricia Mangan beat Curtis Cup player Sarah Jones by two holes after going one up at the second and never falling behind after that. Mangan increased her lead to two by winning the ninth and though she lost the 12th, the Irish player hung on determinedly, winning the 14th and then losing the 15th to be one up with three to play. Mangan won the last for a notable success.
Martin Gillen came from three down at the turn to get another point for Ireland with a 3 and 1 win over Louise Davis. Gillen won the 10th, 11th and 13th to open up a two-hole lead and clinched it by winning the last.
Everything now depended on the Jo Pritchard v Sinead Keane match and victory went to the Welsh girl, making her first appearance of the series, by 2 and 1. That fourth singles win enabled Wales to overturn the 2-1 foursomes deficit for a 5-4 win. Pritchard was one up at the turn but then won the 10th and 11th to give herself a vital cushion against Keane coming back at her over the closing holes. Keane did win back the 12th but promptly lost the 13th and then won the 15th to be two down with three to play. The three holes were halved.

Singles update 2:40pm
Scots skipper Elaine Farquharson-Black had taken the bold step of dropping Anne Laing and Linzi Morton from the singles against England after they were well beaten in the morning foursomes. In came Pam Feggans for her women's home internationals debut and Susie Laing was given her first appearance in the singles line-up.
Scotland's hopes of a first win over England since 1991 at Aberdovey depended a lot on Heather Stirling beating Rebecca Hudson in the top singles ... and things did not look too promising for the Scottish champion on the outward half. After losing the opening hole, Hudson won the second, third, fifth, sixth and seventh to surge four up. Heather won back the eighth but her Curtis Cup colleague had got the bit between her teeth.
Susie Laing was two down after four to Fame Morte, having lost the third and fourth but won back the sixth to be one down. Then More won the seventh to regain a two-hole lead.
Clare Queen won the opening hole against Alex Keighley but lost the fourth and fifth to be one down.
Pam Feggans, called in for her home internationals debut, won the third hole against Sarah Heath, making her first outing of the 2002 series, and was still one up after five.
Lesley Mackay won the second hole against Kirsty Fisher but lost the fourth to be all square.
Lynn Kenny won the difficult first hole, requiring a long carry from the tee over an expanse of heather, but lost the second and her match against Kerry Smith, a winner in the first three sessions of play, was still all square after four holes.

Woweee! Scotland beat Wales by five matches to four. Ireland beat England by a similar margin.
Heather Stirling, Linzi Morton and Lesley Mackay all won their matches by 5/4, 4/2 and 3/2 respecively. Clare Queen lost to Becky Brewerton. Anne Laing who was down most of the way, one up playing the 18th, got a half, and it all came down to Lynn Kenny's match. Lynn was three down after 13 to Sarah Jones, but managed to turn things round and secured the half necessary for Scotland to win. Well done Lynn, Well done team! Colin's report - Results

England continued their unbeaten run by beating Wales by seven matches to two this afternoon to take the Girls Home International Team Championship at the Hermitage, Dublin. Scotland, with three defeats have definitely won (?!) the wooden spoon. Ireland beat us today by 7 1/2 matches to 1 1/2.

5:30pm: Vikki Laing (Musselburgh) was beaten by two holes by Brandi Jackson of Belton, S.C. in the third round of the US Women's Amateur at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club, Scarborough, New York, earlier today. She was 4 down at the turn, and three down with three to go, then went birdie, eagle at 16 and 17 to be only one down on the 18th tee but unfortunately took a bogey 5 down the last against her opponents par 4.
Carole Semple Thompson was also beaten, 5 and 3 by Virada Nirapathpongporn of Thailand.
Kent-born Lindsey Wright (Australia) won by 5 and 3 against Erica Blasburg of Corona, California.

World Student Golf Championships

Lynn Kenny (University of Stirling) had a disappointing last round of 81 for a four-round total of 310 to fall from fourth to tenth equal place in the 9th World Student Golf Championships at the Sunrise Golf and Country Club, Taoyuan, Taiwan today. Tournament leader Yu Pei-Lin (pictured right), from the home nation, Chinese Taipei, returned a 71 for a total of 292 to win the tournament in convincing fashion, nine strokes ahead of Allison Fouch (USA) whose last round of 78 for 301 put her one stroke ahead of Kyoko Furuya (Japan). Clare Queen (University of Strathclyde) had her best round of the tournament, a 75, and took fifteenth equal place on 316. The third member of the Great Britain Women's team, Lesley Mackay (University of Stirling, returned a 78, which counted for the "best two-out-of-three" team total of 153. Great Britain took fourth place in the Women's Team event with 621. Taipei won with 596 from Japan (603) and USA (619)

The last time this event was staged, two years ago at Coleraine, Northern Ireland, Laura Moffat won the individual World title, Vikki Laing was third, and Great Britain won the team title. Lesley Mackay was the third member of that winning side.

Ireland's Justin Kehoe won the Men's Individual event with a last round of 69 for 276. His two closest challengers, Martin Rominger (Switzerland) and Riki Ikeda (Japan) both had 74's for 282 and 285 respectively. The best Brit was Geoff Harris (Old Dominion) who returned a 75 for a total of 290 and joint seventh place. Jonathan Evans (Loughborough) had a 72 for 292 and joint ninth. David Sutton spoilt his run of successive 71s with a 75 for thirteenth place on 294. Andrew Smith (S.E. Louisiana) also figured on the leaderboard in seventeenth place with a 77 and total of 299.

Japan took the Men's team title with 854. Ireland were next on 860 and Switzerland third on 870. Messrs Harris, Evans and Sutton contributed to the last round team score of 222 and their total of 874 gave them fourth place.

EUROPEAN UNDER-21S CHAMPIONSHIP
TURNBERRY is to host the Lexus European Under-21 championships during the week beginning Monday, October 28. The Ayrshire resort was also the venue last year when Barry Hume (Haggs Castle) won the boys' title after a sudden-death play-off and Emma Cabrera (Spain) took the girls' championship. This year's field has still to be finalised but all the European nations are invited to nominate their leading players. It is expected that Kelly Brotherton (Tulliallan) as winner of the BP Scottish Under-21 stroke-play championship at Brotherton will be one of Scotland's representatives.

Lynn Kenny (University of Stirling) (pictured left), with a third round of 77 for a total of 229, slipped to fourth place in the 9th World Student Golf Championships at the Sunrise Golf and Country Club, Taoyuan, Taiwan today. Scoring was higher overall in the third round, and the tournament leader Yu Pei-Lin, from the home nation, Chinese Taipei, also returned a 77 to remain in the lead with a total of 221. Allison Fouch (USA) who had a 75, is two behind the leader, on 223, and Kyoko Furuya (Japan) who returned a 76, is just one stroke ahead of Lynn on 228. Clare Queen (University of Strathclyde) had a 85 and takes 17th place with a total of 241.
In the Women's Team event, Taipei lead with a "best-two-out-of-three" total of 450. Japan are six strokes adrift, and USA (466) has just squeezed ahead of Great Britain (468) who are in fourth place. Lesley Mackay had a third round 83 to contribute in the team event.
Ireland's Justin Kehoe remains in the lead in the Men's Individual event with a third round 71 for a total of 207, just one shot ahead of Martin Rominger (Switzerland) who had the best round of the day, a 66, on a day when no-one else broke 70. Riki Ikeda (Japan), in third place on 211, is four shots ahead of Geoff Harris (Great Britain/Old Dominion) who had a 73 today. David Sutton (Univeristy of Stirling), with a second successive 71 moved up to ninth place on 219, one stroke ahead of Jonathan Evans (Loughborough) who had a 72. Andrew Smith (Great Britain/S.E. Louisiana) had a 73 for 222.
Great Britain are also lying fourth in the "best three-out-of-four" Men's team event with a total of 652, Japan are in the lead with 643, three shots ahead of Ireland (646). Switzerland are next on 651.

In the Men's Championship Justin Kehoe from Ireland leads the field with scores of 71 and 65 for 136, one stroke ahead of Riki Ikeda (Japan). Jonathan Evans (Loughborough) and David Sutton (University of Stirling) returned 72 and 71 respectively to be in joint 10th place, and with three out of four scores contributing to the team total, Great Britain are in third place with 436, eleven shots behind Japan (425) and nine behind Ireland (427). Just watched some great television coverage of the Weetabix British Open at Turnberry. The spectacle of so many excellent young (good-looking) players will do wonders for women's golf. Lynn Kenny (University of Stirling) is lying 5th after a first round of 77 in the 9th World Student Golf Championships at the Sunrise Golf and Country Club, Taoyuan, Taiwan. Clare Queen (University of Strathclyde) was right behind her with a 78, and the two of them combined to give a team total of 155 which put Great Britain in second equal place with Japan, five strokes behind leaders Taipei in the Team Championship. The third member of the Great Britain woman's team, Lesley Mackay (University of Stirling) had a non-counting 82.
Geoff Harris (Old Dominion) had a 71 to take second place, one stroke behind leader, Riki Ikeda, from Japan, in the Men's Individual Championship. Andrew Smith (S. E. Louisiana) had a 75 which put him in 13th place, and Jonathan Evans (Loughborough) returned the third counting score, a 76, for a total of 222 which gave the Men's team third place behind Japan (215) and Ireland (218).

DAWN DEWAR WINS LAST PLACE AMONG 32 QUALIFIERS
DAWN Dewar was the only Scot among the 32 qualifiers for the match-play stages of the British girls open championship at Sandiway Golf Club, Cheshire. The Angus women's county champion from Monifieth was up with the larks on Thursday morning to resume an eight-way play-off involving those who had totalled 150 for the 36-hole medal-play test. It was suspended when darkness fell on Wednesday night and the last of the five places at stake still had to be decided.
It was Dawn v Alex Marshall, the English champion, for that 32nd place and it was the Scot who prevailed to earn a first round tie against the leading qualifier, Emma Cabrera who had totalled 138 with a pair of 69s.
Emma was one of nine Spaniards among the 32 qualifiers. England and France came next with five qualifiers apiece. Sweden had 4, Ireland 3, including the Delaney sisters, and Scotland, Netherlands and Finland had just one qualifier apiece.
Biggest disappointment among the Scots who failed to make it concerned Jenna Wilson from Strathaven. After a first-round 73, she should have made it with strokes to spare but, instead, shot an 83 at the second time of asking and her total of 156 was six shots too many even to figure in the play-off. Kate O'Sullivan (Cochrane Castle) had rounds of 78 and 81 for 159, Scottish Under-18 champion Laura Walker from Nairn Dunbar had rounds of 80 and 82 while Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze) was well off the mark with an 81 and 84 for 165. Only a handful of Scots entered the British championship.

The Official Site of the 2002 Open Championship (www.opengolf.com) broke all previous records, attracting 1.8 million unique visitors and generating over 229 million page views, according to the Royal & Ancient Golf Club. Unique visitors increased over 200% and page views roughly doubled from the records set for the 2001 Championship. Press Release
[Rather puts this website to shame! I've only been keeping statistics for a short time (since I moved the site to Lycos WebCentre).
FYI, in July, kirkwoodgolf had 3355 visits and 11954 page views (note: some of the pages of photographs are not included in the count)... I think this is good for a site whose content is quite specialised and whose address has really only spread by word of mouth.... I rather think that the Open Website had a team of people and huge resources, rather than the shoestring production budget of this one!

Vets Jamboree (sorry.. Veteran Ladies' Golf Association Area Team Championship)
Scotland won the Vet's Jamboree. You can probably here the sound of singing from Seaton Carew. Avoid the A1 tomorrow morning! Here is Colin's report

Janice Moodie Trophy
Solheim Cup star and US LPGA Tour player Janice Moodie, back in Scotland for next week's Weetabix British Women's Open championship at Turnberry, not only donated all the prizes as usual but this year was able to present them in person at the Janice Moodie Trophy girls' open tournament at her old home golf club, Windyhill.
All the competitors also received a free lunch and refreshment.
Katie Brown (Murrayfield) was the overall winner with the best net score of 69 off a handicap of 18. Further details and scores
