Yorkshire player's fifth victory on US college circuit

Jodi Ewart wins Mountain West Conference title for 3rd time

The University of New Mexico women's team went wire-to-wire to win its third straight Mountain West Conference Championship today - and Yorkshire's Jodi Ewart, ranked No 6 in Golfweek's US women's college standings, won the individual title by four strokes.
It was the third time Jodi had taken the title. She previously was Mountain West Conference champion in 2007 and again in 2008.
Over the three rounds at what is recognised as a tough track, Ewart had one eagle, eight birdies, two double bogeys and seven bogeys to finish at one-over-par 217.
The Lobos, No. 22 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, finished at 34-over 898 and defeated No. 25 Texas Christian University by nine strokes at Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, California
Jodi Ewart, sixth in Golfweek’s rankings, shot a final-round 71 to win the individual title by four strokes. It was the fifth win of her US college golf circuit career, and the first since the 2009 Arizona Wildcat Invitational.
Northallerton (near York)-born Ewart, who had her 22nd birthday on January 7, finished at 1-over 217, four shots ahead of TCU’s Rachel Raastad. New Mexico’s Rebecca Hellbom was another shot back at 222, and Wyoming’s Jonelle Martinez and BYU’s Maggie Yuan tied for fourth at 227.
What a pity for Great Britain & Ireland's Curtis Cup hopes of beating the Americans at Essex County Club in June that Jodi is turning professional at the end of her four years at the University of New Mexico - BEFORE the Curtis Cup contest.
She would have been an automatic selection by the GB&I selectors had she remained an amateur until late June and would have given the Americans a run for their money. But Jodi is determined to pursue a tour pro golf career as soon as possible, cutting her teeth on the US Duramed Futures Tour.
New Mexico had posted just one top-5 finish this spring, a fourth-place showing last week at the ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. But the Lobos showed good form all week in California, leading each of the three rounds to win their third consecutive Mountain West title and seventh in the past 11 seasons. Colorado State finished third at 54-over 914, and UNLV came in at 928.

Volcanic Dust keeps Scots at home and KOs Portmarnock seniors' match

The Scotland veterans v Ireland seniors ladies match fell victim to the Volcanic Dust at 25,000ft!
The annual match for the Mary McKenna Salver was due to be hosted by the Irish at Portmarnock, Dublin on Sunday and Monday, but, with all flights cancelled and the ferry full with last minute bookings, there was no way the Scots could get across the Irish Sea.
Skipper Pamela Williamson told Kirkwoodgolf: "Our match is postponed till October, date to be confirmed. Sad, but we are all off for a game on The Duke's!"

US COLLEGE CIRCUIT NEWS

Adam Galbraith wins for second time this year

Adam Galbraith, an English student at Webber International University, Florida, has won on the US college circuit for the second time this year.
Adam, from the Haywards Heath club, Sussex, followed up his February triumph by winning the quaintly-named Bash at the Beach college tournament, hosted by Embry-Riddle University, at Daytona Beach Country Club, Florida.
Galbraith had rounds of 68 and 67 for a nine-under-par total of 135 over the 6,338yd course.
He won by one shot from Carl McCauley (Florida Athlantic) who had a pair of 68s for 136.
Galbraith's team-mates and compatriots Craig Isabel, from Stanford-le-Hope, Tom Gamble, from Walton on Thames, and Connor O'Dell, a freshman from Taunton, Somerset, finished joint ninth, joint 15th and joint 44th respectively.
Isbal had rounds of 73 and 67 for 141, Gamble 72 and 71 for 143 and O'Dell 76 and 81 for 157.
Scott Carmichael, a member of Baberton Golf Club, Edinburgh and a student at Johnson & Wales University-Floridaq, finishe djoint 35th in a field of 50 players with scores of 75 and 77 for 152.
Galbraith's fine effort spearheaded Webber International to victory in the team event. They finished five shots ahead of Florida Atlantic in a field of six squads.

Kelsey can clinch Curtis Cup place
-
with good display at 'Helen Holm'

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY UNIVERSITY OF STIRLING
By DAVID CHRISTIE
Two stunning scores have given Curtis Cup hopeful Kelsey MacDonald the winning mentality at the perfect time.
MacDonald, a University of Stirling scholarship student, is in peak form ahead of the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play championship, beginning next Friday at Troon.
A remarkable final round 68 on St Andrews' Castle Course - the best round of the day - ensured she was crowned the 2010 R&A Foundation Scholars Tournament women's champion, finishing second overall behind fellow Stirling student Patrick Spraggs.
This followed success in Spain where MacDonald clawed back an eight-shot deficit in the final round to be crowned the Hacienda del Alamo Women's Open champion. The sun was well and truly shining on MacDonald, who finished runner-up on a countback after tying for first with Welsh international Amy Boulden in the Murcia Ladies Open. The pair finished in front of three other Curtis Cup squad members.
"It has been my best season so far," commented MacDonald, who also reached the semi-finals of the Jones/Doherty match-play on the Orange Blossom Tour in Florida in January before further impressive performances in France and Spain.
"I've played a lot more tournaments than in previous years and I've managed to have consistently good rounds. It sounds silly, but I've learned how to win. I used to try and make the cut, then it was the target of the top ten - now I aim to win. And because I've won some events in the last two years, I have the hunger to win even more."
Having been named in the provisional GB&I Curtis Cup squad, MacDonald has been playing as much golf as possible in a bid to impress the Ladies Golf Union selectors before they announce the final eight directly after the Helen Holm event at Troon.
A second year Sports Studies student at Scotland's University for Sporting Excellence, MacDonald has been selected two years running for Scotland's national student sports scholarship scheme "Winning Students."
And if she can continue her strong form into the Helen Holm event next week, where she finished runner-up last year, then MacDonald - arguably the best performing Scottish amateur women's player in 2010 - will be difficult to overlook.
She added: "The Helen Holm is traditionally seen as the start of the season, but with the Curtis Cup in June, it's important to be peaking around now. I wasn't expecting to finish so high last year although I had been playing well.
"But this year my results going into it are much better so I am definitely looking forward to playing and I know I can win. Royal Troon is always in great condition but it's a tough course, always windy, so it is never going to be easy.
"It is quite hard knowing this is the last tournament before the team is selected. There is that pressure on you knowing the selectors are watching, but you have to use that in a good way and show why you should be picked."
+Kelsey comes from Nairn and lives just across the road from the first tee at Nairn Dunbar Golf Club where she is a member. She retained the Scottish Under-21 championship on her home course last season.

Eilidh keeps Briggs' name on Renfrewshire championship trophy

So the Briggs name will appear on the Renfrewshire county championship trophy for a fifth year in a row after all.
Scottish champion Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm), bidding to win the title for a fourth year in a row, had been beaten by Carol Whyte (Windyhill) in the first round of the match-play stages at Ranfurly Castle Golf Club on Thursday morning.
But Megan's younger sister Eilidh, also a Kilmacolm member, preserved the family honour by beating the leading qualifier, Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze) by 5 and 4 in today's final.
Briggs the younger was five under par for the 25 holes she had to play today. Great to be able to produce your best form on the big occasion!
It was Eilidh's second appearance in the final. As a 14-year-old, she lost to big sister Megan in the 2008 final.
Clare-Marie Carlton has now lost in the 2007, 2009 and 2010 finals since winning the title as a 16-year-old in 2003.
Eilidh Briggs, the No 6 seed, was two under par for the holes played in the final. She was level par to the turn, compared to her opponent's three-over-par figures. The 10th was halved in birdies and then Eilidh produced an eagle to win the 11th and virtually clinch the championship.
In the semi-finals, Carlton cut giant-killer Carol Whyte down to size with a 4 and 3 victory, producing three birdies on the outward half.
Briggs was three under par in winning her semi-final by 9 and 7 against young Lesley Cosh (Cowglen).
Today's results:
Semi-finals - Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze) bt Carol Whyte (Windyhill) 4 and 3, Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) bt Lesley Cosh (Cowglen) 9 and 7.
Final - Eilidh Briggs bt Clare-Marie Carlton 5 and 4.

JANE TURNER RETAINS BRITISH STUDENT
-
WOMEN'S STROKE-PLAY GOLF TITLE

Aberdeen student Jane Turner has won the British Universities & Colleges' women's stroke-play golf championship for the second year in a row.
A full Scotland international team player, Jane, who is a second year graphic design student at Robert Gordon University and a member of Craigielaw Golf Club, had rounds of 76, 74, 75 and 74 for a total of 299 over a demanding Dundonald Links women's course which had a CSS of 76-76-75-76 (303).
Turner won the title at Hollinwell, Notts 12 months ago.
One shot behind the pacemaking Sian James (Birmingham) overnight, Jane moved into the lead for the first time when she birdied the dogleg 17th hole with a pitch-and-a-putt in the final round.
Turner is now hoping to pull off what would be a superb title double on Ayrshire links. Next weekend she is in the star-studded international field for the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Troon.
"The Ayrshire coast is great for me. I have improved every game this season and hope that this sets me up for what is to come this season," she said.
This will include a trip to the FISU World University Championships at Malaga, Spain, in early June.
Turner finished a shot ahead of Lucy Williams (Birmingham) (80-73-73-74) with Sian James (Birmingham) third on 301 with rounds of 75, 75, 73 and 78.
Monifieth's Rebecca Wilson (Stirling) finished a creditable fourth on 312 with scores of 80, 76, 74 an d82.
Ladybank member Susan Jackson (Edinburgh) finished joint sixth on 319 with scores of 85, 80, 78 and 76.
The British universities men's stroke-play title for the Wollaton Park Trophy was won by Nicky Maddison (University of Northumbria) who was playing on the American college circuit at this time last year.
Maddison, who gave his leading rivals a start with a first-round 79, came roaring back into contention with scores of 69, 70 and 72 for a total of two-over-par 290 to win by three shots from Northumbrian team-mate Ross Crowe.
Nicky, a first year computer studies student from Newcastle, joined the University of Northumbria last September, having previously studied at Hutchinson Community College, in Kansas City where he was their star golfer.
A member of Newcastle Golf Club with a handicap of +1, Nicky felt that the best representing the part of his 72 holes was his his ability to recover from a "disappointing" 79 on the first day to shoot "very solid golf" for the remaining three rounds.
Previously, St Andrews boys' open champion in 2008, Nicky said:
"Scotland's pretty lucky for me. I am really very happy with this result". Asked what his ambitions were for the rest of the season, Nicky said "I intend to practise hard and see where I go."
This will include a trip to the FISU World University Championships at Malaga.
Top Scottish-based student was England's Patrick Spraggs (Stirling University), recent winner of the R&A Scholars' men's title at St Andrews. Patrick finished fifth on 295 with scores of 72, 81, 780 and 72. He finished two shots ahead of the leading Scot, Aberdeen's John Duff who came sixth on 297 with scores of 74, 75, 74 and 74.

110sport, one of the UK’s leading sports management groups, are delighted to announce the signing of golfer Krystle Caithness.
The 21-year-old from St Andrews is one of the top-rated youngsters in the ladies game and is regarded as one of the most exciting prospects to emerge from Scotland in recent years.
Next week Krystle, who in 2009 finished 41st overall in the Order of Merit in her rookie season on the Ladies European Tour, will make another huge step up in her career when she represents Scotland in the Nations Cup alongside reigning British Open champion Catriona Matthew MBE.
Krystle, previously on a golf scholarship at the University of Georgia where she was part of the Bulldogs team ranked fifth in the USA, was the only player with a 100% record when she represented Great Britain and Ireland in the 2008 Curtis Cup.
She will receive support from Core Golf and Lyle & Scott, while lending her own support to Sparks, the children’s medical research charity.
"I am really excited at joining 110sport and this is a huge opportunity for me" said Krystle, a prolific junior event winner in Scotland.
"I know their experience in looking after the likes of Sir Chris Hoy and Stephen Hendry MBE, as well as players such as Alastair Forsyth and Marc Warren from the world of golf will only benefit me and allow me to concentrate entirely on my game and my career.
"Next week and the chance to play with Catriona is like a dream come true. It isn’t coming around quick enough and I can only learn from the experience."
Dean Robertson, Golf Performance & Development Manager for 110sport Group said; "We are delighted to have formed a partnership with someone like Krystle who obviously has great potential and hopefully a great future in her chosen sport.
"Naturally we will do everything we can to assist and support her quest to reach the top."
Paul Connew, Director of Communications at Sparks said; "We’re delighted that Krystle Caithness has decided to support Sparks. She will make a marvellous Ambassador for the charity.

James Maw wins Faldo Series
-

qualifier at Moortown

NEWS RELEASE
James Maw produced some sparkling golf in difficult conditions to win the Faldo Series UK Championship 36-hole qualifying competition at Moortown Golf Club in Leeds.
The Yorkshire county player from the Hallowes Golf Club in Sheffield put together rounds of 70 and 72 for a level par aggregate of 142 and a five-shot victory over Nathan Kimsey from Woodhall Spa.
The victory gives Maw a place in the 2010 Faldo Series Europe Grand Final to be played at the Lough Erne Resort, Co. Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, on September 21-23 where he will be joined by Kimsey (Boys’ Under-18), Prestbury’s James Newton (Boys Under-16), Morecambe’s Steven Chester (Boys’ Under-16), Halifax West End’s Helen Searle (Girls’ Under-21) and Crosland Heath’s Rochelle Morris (Girls’ Under-16), all of whom won their age group categories at Moortown.
Maws opened the event with a fine one under par round of 70 which gave him a share of second place behind Silkstone’s Dalton Richardson.
Richardson produced the only sub-70 round of the tournament during the opening round but he fell away with a second round 82 and that left Maw to close out the title with a solid 72 which never looked likely to be emulated on a day when strong wind made scoring extremely difficult.
“I’m delighted,” said Maw. “I qualified for the Grand Final back in 2006 at Celtic Manor when I had a chance to play with Rory McIlroy so I know exactly what to expect at Lough Erne. It’s going to be a great event. I am more experienced than I was in 2006 so I feel I will have a really good chance to win.
“The key to my performance was my putting,” he added. “The greens at Moortown are very testing but I holed out extremely well.”
The opening event of the 2010 Faldo Series Europe at Frilford Heath, Oxfordshire, featured three play-offs but this time there was no need for extra holes to decide the age group titles. Woodhall Spa’s Nathan Kimsey produced rounds of 70 and 77 to claim a one shot victory over Hessle’s Paul Lockwood in the Under-18s section while in the Under-16s section James Newton’s rounds of 70 and 82 were enough to give him a comprehensive four-shot victory over Ramside Hall’s Kieran Ayre and Morecambe’s Steven Chester.
The Girls’ events turned out to be somewhat similar with Helen Searle posting rounds of 77 and 86 to claim a five shot victory over Portpatrick’s Gillian Monteith, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, in the Under-21 section and Rochelle Morris dominating the Under-16s event after posting two impressive rounds of 76 and 79.
Morris was ecstatic at the prospect of teeing up at the Grand Final.
“I’m gob smacked,” she said. “Today I tried hard to keep calm and focussed on hitting one shot at a time and it worked very well.
“I seemed to hole almost everything so that helped as well.”
Sir Nick Faldo created the Faldo Series (charity number 1102719) back in 1996 to help develop tomorrow’s champions and to date its former graduates include World No. 11 Rory McIlroy, who won the Under-15s and Under-17s titles in 2004 and 2006 respectively, Scottish World Cup winner Marc Warren, English European Tour stars Nick Dougherty and Oliver Fisher, LPGA Major winner Yani Tseng and rising Ladies’ European Tour player Melissa Reid.

match at Royal Portrush

FROM THE SCOTSMAN WEBSITE
By NICK RODGER
James Byrne will fly the Scottish flag in Dean Robertson's European team for the defence of the Palmer Cup against the United States on June 24-26 at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.
The Banchory youngster, pictured right, a student at Arizona State University and a member of GB&I's Walker Cup elite training squad, has been named in an eight-man side of leading college golfers for the Ryder Cup-style joust.
England's Patrick Spraggs, a student at the University of Stirling, gained his place as a reward for winning the men's title at the R&A Scholars' tournament at St Andrews recently.
The European team is:
Patrick Spraggs (England) Stirling University
Andrea Pavan (Italy) Texas A & M
Henrik Norlander (Sweden) Augusta State
Jesper Kennegard (Sweden) Arizona State
James Byrne (Scotland) Arizona State
David Lingmerth (Sweden) Arkansas
Pontus Widegren (Sweden) UCLA
Rhys Enoch (Wales) East Tennessee

Dean Robertson (Head Coach)
Walle Danewid (Assistant Coach) (Swedish Golf Federation)

"The American side we beat last year at Cherry Hills went on to form the backborn of their successful Walker Cup team," said coach Robertson. "That shows how impressive our win was. But we have another strong team this year with plenty of experience. James Byrne excelled on the amateur circuit last year and is used to the international team stage."

+James Byrne and Ross Kellett (Colville Park) travel to India next week to represent Europe against Asia Pacific in the Bonallack Trophy match from April 21 to 23.

Olivia Jordan-Higgins' record-setting win

in Big South Women's Championship

Channel Islander Olivia Jordan-Higgins, a senior-year student at Charleston Southern University, won the Big South Women's Championship today at The Patriot Golf Club, South Carolina.
Olivia shot rounds of 70, 75 and 70 to title the title with a championship low aggregate of one-under-par 215. It was third time lucky for her - she finished second in 2008 and again in 2009.
Olivia, pictured above, also spearheaded a winning team effort by Charleston Southern whose aggregate of 881 was a conference championship record.
“I could not be prouder of our team and what they have accomplished,” Charleston Southern coach Kory Thompson said. “To play their best round of the tournament with the pressure on and the conditions at their toughest says a lot about the character of this team.”
With the victory, Charleston Southern clinches a berth in NCAA regional play, which begins May 6.
Hannah Coles (Radford University) from Birmingham finished 21st in a field of 45 players with scores of 75, 79 and 81 for 235.

Sinead O'Sullivan finishes joint 13th behind team-mate

Sinead O'Sullivan (East Tennessee State) from Ireland finished joint 13th in the Atlantic Sun Women's Championship at Venetian Bay Golf Club, New Smyrna, Florida.
Sinead scored 80, 70 and 75 for 225.
Team-mate Laura Jansone was the individual winner with scores of 69, 73 and 71 for 213. She finished two shots ahead of Stetson University's Alex Bluelow who had rounds of 72, 72 and 71.

Stetson (884) won the team title ahead of Kennesaw State (888) with East Tennessee State and Campbell University tieing for third place on 889 in a field of 10 teams.

Ryanair put a damper on Scots wanting to fly to

Morocco Family Golf Festival (October 9 to 16)

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Tournament Director for the 2010 Morocco Family Golf Festival
Ryanair's extortionate charge for carrying golf clubs could scare off potential Scottish entrants to the inaugural Morocco Family Golf Festival, to be held at Marrakech from October 9 to 16.
Mohamed Fakir, boss of London-based Menara Travel Ltd, who are putting together all the arrangements, told me today:
"I have started to receive a number of enquiries - a few from Scotland - from golfers who are quite attracted by the prospect of playing golf on four different courses at Marrakech.
"The problem with the flights from Edinburgh to Marrakech is the quite high rates being charged by Ryanair. The Ryanair website is currently showing a price of £250 per person return + £80 for golf clubs' carriage (£330 in all) which is quite high compared to the flight we have secured with Royal Air Maroc from London Gatwick, which is £189 including FREE carriage of golf clubs.
"The price quoted by Easyjet for the Manchester to Marrakech flight on Saturday, October 9 is £180 per person return + £38 per golf bag both ways.
"I have contacted Ryanair and Easyjet to try to do a deal with them quite a while ago but they said they don’t work with travel agents/tour operators. They prefer to deal directly with clients, which means we have to book the flights for our clients on their website the same way anyone else does it."
So it might be cheaper for Scottish golfers who want to share in the fun of the Morocco Family Golf Festival to cross the Border to Manchester or even Gatwick for a flight to Marrakech on Saturday, October 9.
Remember there will be individual prize categories for senior men (over 55yr), senior women (over 50y), men, women, Under-16 & Under-18 boys, Under-16 & Under-18 girls. You can name your own partner if you wish for the Festival's curtain-raising better-ball Stableford foursomes on the Sunday (October 10).

English students in the driving
-
seat at Dundonald Links

English students are in the driving seat in both the men's and women's championships with one round to go of the British Universities & Colleges' 72-hole stroke-play golf championships Dundonald Links, Ayrshire on Thursday afternoon.
Nicky Maddison (Northumbria University), pictured, who played last year on the US college circuit, leads the men's title race with a two-over-par, three-round total of 218 - which represents quite a comeback from an opening round of seven-over 79. He has tagged on very good sub-par scores of 69 and 70 to lead by one shot from team-mate Ross Crowe with Scots John Wybar (Aberdeen) and Steven Smith (Heriot Watt) in third and joint fourth positions on 221 and 222.
There are four Scots sharing sixth place on 223 - R&A Bursars champion Patrick Spraggs (Stirling), Colin Thomson (Stirling), John Duff (Aberdeen) and Alex Culverwell (Stirling) - so perhaps a Scottish last-round charge is on the cards.
Sian James (Birmingham), winner of the R&A Bursars' ladies' title last year, is making all the running in the students' women's championship.
She has had rounds of 75, 75 and 73 for 223, leading Jane Turner (Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen), a Scotland international and the defending champion, by two shots. Jane has scored 76, 74 and 75 over what is a tough track for the men - and even tougher for the women.
Monifieth's Scotland girl cap Rebecca Wilson (Stirling) is in fourth place on 230 with rounds of 80 76 and 74.

Veteran Douglas Park member Helen Faulds won the Dunbartonshire & Argyll women's county golf championship for the first time at Hilton Park Golf Club today.

McLean had the edge on the outward half but Faulds squared the contest at the 12th and used her greater experience to edge ahead over the closing holes.
The bronze championship was won by Lindsay McCubbin (Hilton Park) who beat Josephine Monaghan (Dumbarton) by 5 and 3 in the final.

Eve Muirhead has a page in a Japanese golf magazine devoted to her skills as a curler and a golfer.

Golfing curler Eve Muirhead is a big hit in Japan!

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Eve Muirhead is probably not aware of it but she was big news in Japan during the world curling championships in Vancouver.
I got an E-mail during the tournament from the editor of a Japanese golfing magazine. He asked me if if were true that the Scots girl could also play golf as well as being a star curler for Great Britain. Almost as if the two sports could not be mixed.
He told me that Japanese coverage of the world curling championships made a point of featuring Eve Muirhead on television and their newspapers. The Scot had somehow taken a trick with their viewers and readers
Eve has also made the golf magazines in Japan. The aforementioned editor sent me a copy of a magazine - I would not attempt to put a name to it - with a whole page devoted to the Scot. See above.
Eve, who will celebrate her 20th birthday on April 22, comes from Blair Atholl and a curling family. Her father Gordon was an international-class curler. She is a member of Pitlochry Golf Club where she has a handicap of scratch despite not devoting nearly as much time to her golf as she does to curling. She has won the Highland Women's Open more than once.
What I did not mention to the Japanese magazine editor was that Eve Muirhead is also an accomplished bagpiper. Now that would really have got him going!

Aberdeen girl Gemma runner-up in Florida

despite a 9 in her second round

US-based Aberdeen teenager Gemma Dryburgh finished runner-up in an international field for the Innisbrook Easter Junior championship near Tampa, Florida.
Gemma, who had four birdies in each of her last two rounds, had scores of 81, 77 and 74 over a tough, 6,250yd course, for a total of 232.
She was very unfortunate in the second round on her 16th hole, hitting a cart path which kicked her ball into a lateral hazard and then having to take a drop from a greenside bunker when her ball was unplayable and initially thought to be lost. She finished with a costly 9 at the par-5 hole.
The four shots dropped at that one hole came back to haunt her because she finished four shots behind the winner, Lauren Grogan from Jack Nicklaus's home town of Columbus, Ohio. Lauren scored 75, 73 and 80 for 228.
Dryburgh finished seven shots ahead of the third-placed Fazella Sukho (78-81-80 for 239) and Clara Teixeira (Brazil), who came fourth, was farther back on 243 (83-83-77).

Alison Nicholas achieves a PGA Degree of Success

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE PROFESSIONAL GOLFERS' ASSOCIATION
Europe’s Solheim Cup captain Alison Nicholas has chalked up another significant milestone in her illustrious career – as a graduate of the PGA Foundation Degree.
Former US Women’s Open winner Nicholas, who has been charged with guiding Europe’s leading women against the US for the second successive time in 2011, will be among dozens of graduates at the University of Birmingham on Friday, marking the end of three years of hard work to make the grade as a PGA professional.
Nicholas’s achievement was done so against the backdrop of being Solheim Cup captain for two of her three years of studying the various facets of being a PGA professional, including sport science, business, coaching and equipment technology.
The Birmingham-based professional, who teaches at the Hagley Golf and Country Club and the European Golf Performance Institute in Rugeley, was determined to pursue her PGA credentials after an illustrious playing career that garnered 18 titles including two majors.
“Taking the PGA Foundation Degree was important for me after I took retirement,” said Nicholas, who competitively hung up her clubs in 2004. “It was important for me to keep learning and to learn as much as I can to help other people in terms of my teaching. I can testify that I have learned a lot more than I knew at the start of the course.”
Completing the degree course, which sees an intake of around 300 budding PGA professionals a year, ranks among her career highlights.
“It is pretty much up there,” said the 48-year-old, who was awarded an MBE in 1998 following her US Women’s Open victory.“I’m delighted that I passed and got through in three years. It has been hard work juggling studying, working and my Solheim Cup duties. I did feel under a bit of pressure, but I’ve used to thriving under this situation throughout my career. It was important for me to finish it inside the three years.”
Nicholas, who will be the host captain for the 2011 contest against the US, will be free to focus on the build up to the match – without any distractions.
“I will have a lot more to do with the preparations this time around and will be going out to the venue later this month,” said Nicholas.
Her achievement in completing the course was recognised by senior figures at the PGA and the Ladies European Tour.
PGA chief executive Sandy Jones said: "This is a tremendous achievement for Alison and marks a year of hard work. She deserves huge applause for her outstanding efforts and I wish her more success in the future.”
Alexandra Armas, executive director of the Ladies European Tour, said: “I congratulate the 2009 and 2011 European Solheim Cup captain, Alison Nicholas, on her PGA graduation. Alison has worked extremely hard to combine studying with steering her Solheim Cup team, as well as teaching at Hagley Golf & Country Club at The Driving Range & Golf Academy and working with the European Golf Performance Institute.”

Chloe Goadby (St Regulus) wins East of Scotland

Girls’ spring meeting at Pitreavie, Dunfermline

Twelve-year-old new member Chloe Goadby from the St Regulus club, St Andrews took the overall prize at the East of Scotland Girls' Golf Association spring meeting at Pitreavie Golf Club, Dunfermline on Monday.
Chloe showed her potential for the future with a brilliant net score of 62 off a handicap of 19.
The glorious sunshine and almost perfect playing conditions produced some great scores. Rachael Watton from Mortonhall won the scratch prize with an excellent three under par round of 69. Rachael just missed out on equalling the course record of five under the par, held by Scotland international Louise Kenney, whose home course is Pitreavie).
Rachael misjudged her approach to the two-tiered 18th green, leaving herself an impossible Augusta-like downhill putt. Rachael then had to settle for her par rather than an eagle.

Is no caddie fire-proof? Tseng sacks bagman Poitevent

after WINNING the Kraft Nabisco Championship

FROM THE GOLFWEEK WEBSITE
By Beth Ann Baldry
MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica – The caddie/player relationship can be a confounding puzzle. Yani Tseng has fired her caddie, Dave Poitevent, after winning the Kraft Nabisco Championship, a major title in the world of women's pro golf and their second victory in 2010. The pair also posted two top-three finishes in Asia.
Tseng said it was a matter of chemistry, though she did credit Poitevent for helping her learn to trust herself more on the course. Clearly, results aren’t everything around here.
Tseng has Tom Thorpe on the bag this week in Jamaica, a veteran caddie of 26 years. Thorpe parted ways with Song-Hee Kim after the Kraft. He spent 10 years working for Nancy Lopez and looped for Lorena Ochoa early in her career.
Solving the caddie equation could be a big part of Tseng’s long-term success. Her first two years on tour she relied on the help of good friend Sherry Lin, but has since realised she needs a more experienced looper. Lin now acts the part of road manager, which is probably a good move.

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE UNITED STATES GOLF ASSOCIATION
Far Hills, New Jersey – Three United States Golf Association champions headline the eight-woman amateur team selected by the Association to represent the United States of America at the 2010 Curtis Cup Match, which will be played June 11-13 at Essex County Club in Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass.
Jennifer Song, 20, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, became the second female in history to win two USGA titles in the same year when she claimed the U.S. Women’s Amateur and U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links in 2009.
Alexis Thompson, 15, of Coral Springs, Fla., won the 2008 U.S. Girls’ Junior and is the youngest player in history to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open, which she did in 2007 at age 12.
Kimberly Kim, 18, of Pahoa, Hawaii, who won the 2006 U.S. Women’s Amateur at age 14 to become the youngest winner in the championship’s history, was named to her second consecutive Curtis Cup Team. She is the only player on the 2010 USA Team to have played in the Match previously.
That trio will be joined by Cydney Clanton, 20, of Concord, N.C.; Jennifer Johnson, 18, of La Quinta, Calif.; Stephanie Kono, 20, of Honolulu, Hawaii; Jessica Korda, 17, of Bradenton, Fla.; and Tiffany Lua, 19, of Rowland Heights, Calif.
The alternates for the 2010 USA Team, in order of ranking, are: Candace Schepperle, 21, of Birmingham, Ala.; and Sydnee Michaels, 21, of Temecula, Calif.
The Curtis Cup Match, contested biennially, features eight female amateurs from Great Britain and Ireland and eight players who represent the USA. The Match consists of three foursomes (alternate-shot) and three four-ball (better-ball) matches on the first two days. On the final day, all eight players from each side play in singles matches.
The 2010 USA Team will be captained by Noreen Mohler of Bethlehem, Pa., who was a member of the USA’s victorious 1978 Curtis Cup team.
The USA Team has won the last six Curtis Cup Matches and leads the series, which began in 1932, by a 26-6-3 margin.

Bedfordshire pair win EWGA East Region foursomes

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Bedfordshire’s Bridie Quinn and Sally Shayler scored a four-shot victory in the EWGA East Region foursomes at Hintlesham Hall, Suffolk.
Sally, the Bedfordshire champion, and Bridie, a past winner of the county title, put together two rounds of three-over par 75 in perfect spring-like weather. They were heading for an even lower score before dropping five shots over the last three holes of their first round.
They recovered well from the setback and, said Sally: “We set out to win this and we are delighted to do it. It was the first 36-hole competition of the year and now we’re looking forward to our county championship at John O’Gaunt in May.”
The pair are a tried and tested foursomes partnership with an excellent record in county week matches. They were also third in this competition last year.

Chris Quinn to defend English senior title at Littlestone

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Hampshire’s Chris Quinn aims to continue a fabulous winning run when she defends her title in the English seniors’ championship at Littlestone, Kent, next week (April 20-23).
The Hockley player dominated senior golf last season when she won both this event and the stroke-play championship, taking her honours total to one British and four English titles.
The championship, which launches the English Women’s Golf Association season, has attracted a bumper entry of 114 players from 29 counties – including one who is based in France. The lowest handicaps are scratch and belong to Chris Quinn and fellow international and past stroke-play champion, Janet Melville of Nottinghamshire.
Kent has provided an excellent entry of 16 players and nine of them are members of the host club. They include Geraldine Bray, who won the senior stroke-play championship in 2006 and represented England later that year.
Every member of last year’s senior international team is playing. In addition to Chris Quinn and Janet Melville they are:
Rozalyn Adams of Surrey, Jo Ashmore of Norfolk, Sue Dye of Cheshire, Lucy Newton of Northumberland and Paula Parker of Cambs & Hunts.
Seven members of the field are eligible for this event for the first time, having recently celebrated their 50th birthdays. Lulu Housman of Highgate in Middlesex, in particular, is making a quick start to senior golf.
She turns 50 just four days before the start! Lulu is a two-handicapper and was Middlesex county champion in 2007. In all, 37 of the players, around a third of the field, are aged 55 or under.
The course will be set at 5,782 yards, with a par and USGA SSS of 73. Littlestone was the host venue of the 2007 English Close Championship and is a venue regularly used for major amateur and professional events. It will host final qualifying for the 2011 Open Championship.
All competitors will play two rounds of stroke-play qualifying, 18 holes on each of Tuesday and Wednesday, April 20 and 21. The leading 16 players will contest the championship matchplay flight while the next 16 players will play in Flight Two. The matchplay stages will take place on Thursday and Friday, April 22 and 23. Spectators are welcome.

Jodi Ewart, Sally Watson finish in top

10 in strongest US college field

Yorkshire's Jodi Ewart (University of New Mexico) and Scotland's Sally Watson (Stanford University, California) finished joint sixth and eighth respectively in the strongest United States women's college circuit field to assemble at the same venue this year.
The occasion was the Ping/ASU Invitational over the Karsten golf course at Tempe, Arizona.
Jodi Ewart, who is coming to the end of her four years at New Mexico and has told the GB&I Curtis Cup selectors that she will be turning professional BEFORE the match against the United States in June, shot rounds of 72, 72 and 67 for a five-under-par total of 211 over the 6,230yd, par-72 course.
Sally also had three very good rounds in very good company and over a testing course. Sally and Jodi were Curtis Cup team-mates in the 2008 match over the Old Course, St Andrews.
Miss Watson, who hails from South Queensferry, had rounds of 71, 72 and 69 for a four-under tally of 212.
A double bogey 6 at the ninth in her second round probably cost the Scot sixth place on her own. In all, the long-hitting Watson had 12 birdies over the 54-hole contest, five of them in her final round - at the long fifth, par-4 eighth, long 10th, short 12th and long 14th. She bogeyed the short seventh and par-4 18th.
Ellie Givens (Denver), from Darlington, tied for 42nd place with scores of 73, 73 and 77 for 223.
Former British women's open amateur stroke-play champion Roseanne Niven (California) from Crieff shared 51st place with scores of 74, 76 and 75 for 225.
The individual winner was Stephanie Kono (University of California-Las Vegas) with scores of 71, 70 and 66 for a nine-under total of 209 - one shot ahead of Jennifer Song (Southern California), one of the US Curtis Cup team selections for this year's match, according to Golfweek.
UCLA (856) won the team title ahead of home-course team Arizona State (856) with Southern California (858) third, New Mexico (863) fourth, Purdue (865) fifth and Denver (865) sixth. Stanford finished 10th in the 17-team field.
FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO WEBSITE
Senior Jodi Ewart and sophomore Rebecca Hellbom (from Sweden) each shot 5-under 67 to propel 24th-ranked New Mexico to one of the best rounds in school history in the final round of the PING/ASU Invitational.
The Lobos shot a 10-under 278, the second-lowest total and the second-best score in relation to par ever by a New Mexico team. UNM's 278 was the lowest round by any team in a tournament that featured 12 of the nation's top-29 schools.
Ewart and Hellbom tied a UNM record by playing a round in 5-under. It had been accomplished five previous times by three UNM golfers, including Ewart at the 2009 Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire. The 67 was a career-best for both golfers and one stroke shy of the Lobo mark set by Kailin Downs at the 2004 Mountain West Conference Championships.
Hellbom ended in a tie for third with a 7-under 209 (71-71-67) - her best 54-hole total at UNM and just one shot off the school mark set by Ewart at the 2009 McGuire.
"It was just really solid," said Hellbom of the lowest round of her playing career. "The hit the fairways and made a lot of putts."
Ewart, who had matched the par of 72 in both her first rounds, caught fire in the third and final round with four straight birdies between holes 3 and 6. She made a bogey at 8 before adding birdies at 10 and 13 in halves of 32 and 35.
"I got off to a great start. The four straight birdies got me going," said Ewart, who went into the tournament ranked as the No. 6 ranked US women's collegiate. "My approach shots were really good. This gives us a lot of confidence going into the conference championships."
FROM THE STANFORD UNIVERSITY WEBSITE
Stanford shot a third round team score of 288 to finish 10th at the PING/ASU Invitational held at the Karsten Course in Tempe, Ariz.
top five.
Freshman Sally Watson fired a final round 69 to finish in eighth place in a field of 90, five strokes behind medalist Stephanie Kono of UCLA (207; -9). Jennifer Song of USC finished one stroke off the pace at 208.
Stanford will next be in action at the Pac-10 Championships, set for April 19-21 at the Eugene (Oregon) Country Club.

It will come as a surprise to many that Auburn senior Candace Schepperle is chosen only as first alternate. Schepperle made the cut at the last year’s U.S. Women’s Open and won the 2009 Dixie Amateur and Harder Hall Invitationals. She also was the 2009 Southeastern Conference Golfer of the Year. She’s No. 37 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings.

+The GB&I team, to be captained by Mary McKenna, will be announced near the end of April.
