Jordan McColl from Dundee ties for third
place with a 71 over the longest course (7,478yd) he's ever played

Dundee's Jordan McColl, a freshman student at New Mexico Junior College, tied for third place in a field of 64 players at the Coca Cola Classic 18-hole college tournament at Twin Rivers Golf Club, Waco in Texas this past week. Jordan had a round of one-under-par 71, which was a very good effort over the longest golf course (7,478yd) he has ever played.
McColl finished four strokes behind the winner Lucas Morande (Hannibal-LaGrange) and two shots behind runner-up Jordan Russell (Texas A&M).
New Mexico JC (297) finished runners-up to McLennan Community College (291) in a team event contested by six college squads.

PETER LATIMER BACK IN USA - AND PLAYING WELL
Peter Latimer from Markinch, beaten by Paul O'Hara in the quarter-finals of the Allied Surveyors Scottish men's amateur championship at Royal Troon this past summer, is back at Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina - and picking up where he left off last college golf season.
Peter tied for fourth place in the Tom & Bettie O'Briant Memorial college tournament at The Cardinal Golf & Country Club near Greensboro. He shot 73 and 76 for a total of 149 over the longish course - 7,002yd - with a stiff par of 70.
Basildon-born Alex Irvin (Berry College, Georgia) finished joint 62nd in the field of 90 players with scores of 88 and 79 for 167.
Joint winners on 146 - only three shots ahead of Latimer - were Methodist University team-mates Josh Speight and Trey Howell, who both scored 73 in each round.

GLASGOW'S GRAEME MOLLOY 36th AT TPC AT DEERE RUN
Graeme Molloy from Glasgow, a senior year student at Grand View University, Des Moines, Iowa, finished joint 36th in a field of 90 players at the NAIA Preview Invitational college tournament at TPC at Deere Run, Silvis in Illinois.
Graeme had rounds of 76 and 79 for a total of 155 over the par-71, 6,625yd course.
Grand View team-mate Yousaf Khan from London tied for 61st place on 160 with rounds of 82 and 78.
Winner was Austin Conroy (Indiana Wesleyan) with a pair of 71s for 142.

LPGA TOUR EVENT IN SOUTH KOREA

Catriona has a day to forget, but

Lorena Ochoa is faring worse!

Women's British Open champion Catriona Matthew had one of her worst rounds for many a long time on the second day of the LPGA Tour's Kolon Championship at Incheon, South Korea.
Only a shot off the pace at the start of the day, the North Berwick-born player sagged from a first-round 67 to a 79, seven over par for the 6,409yd course.
Catriona, pictured, had double bogeys at the short third, the fourth and the 16th which were only partially offset by birdies at the first, fifth and 18th.
The Scot has dropped back to a share of 29th place on 146.
If it is any comfort to Catriona, world No 1 Lorena Ochoa fared even worse! The Mexican ace had a 77 for 149, which puts her in joint 49th place - 10 shots behind the joint leaders, two South Korean players.

Long-time leader Carly lets Faldo Under-21 title

slip out of her grasp over final round in Brazil

Comrie's Carly Booth had a nightmare final round of 12-over-par 84 to lose the lead she had held for two days and finish runner-up to English girls champion Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) in the Nick Faldo Series Grand Final at Itanhanga Golf Club, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The 17-year-old Curtis Cup player from Perthshire had led 18-year-old Clyburn by two shots at the start of the final day but had a double bogey 6 at the second, and triple bogeys 8 and 7 at the long fifth and par-4 eighth holes respectively as she staggered to the turn in eight-over-par 44 strokes.
Clyburn, although not playing particularly well, nor feeling all that great as she bothered to distraction by mosquito bites, turned in 41 shots to take over a one-shot lead from the Scot.
Things did not get much better for Booth after the turn. She had a double bogey 7 at the 11th and a double bogey 6 at the 12th. A birdie 2 at the short 17th was too little too late to turn the tide.
Clyburn, 18, from Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, finished with rounds of 79, 70 and 80 for a 13-over-par total of 229 to win the Under-21 girls' championship by two shots from Booth who had scores of 77, 70 and 84.
Former English women's amateur champion Hannah Barwood (Knowle) was third on 233 with scores of 78, 74 and 81
Fifteen-year-old Brogan Townend (Pleasington) from Blackburn won the Girls' Under-16 classification with a creditable total of 232, five ahead of England girl international Heidi Baek (Felixstowe Ferry) and Brazil's Vitoria Teixeira, the second-round leader.
Brogan's closing score of 74 was several shots better than that achieved by the older, more experienced Clyburn and Booth.
Sam Binning (Ranfurly Castle) had rounds of 77, 73 and 71 for a five-over-par total of 221 which gave him sixth place in the boys' Under-21 championship behind Brazil's Pedro Costa Lima (76-70-68) and England's Thomas Shadbolt (Mid Herts) (75-70-69) who both finished on two-under-par 214.
Costa Lima's better last-round of 68 - the best score by anyone on the final muggy day - was the tie-breaker.
Scott Young (Turnhouse) finished 14th in the Boys' Under-18 category with scores of 75, 79 and 76 for 230, 18 shots more than England's Jonathan Bell (Royal Blackheath) who scored 70, 69 and 73 for a title-winning 212, the best 54-hole aggregate in any category.
Watched by Nick Faldo, who was closely following the close of his 13th Grand Final, the 18 year-old Bell from London led from the first round. He contended well with the hot, humid conditions.
Bell commented: “It’s been a wonderful event: having Nick here has made it a very special week for me; I’ve loved every minute. Being in Brazil has been a totally different experience for me – the people, the surroundings, the culture – it’s all been great. Having a man of Nick’s calibre here to take clinics and learn from makes this a very different tournament.”
Oliver Carr (Heswall), 16, from Prenton won the Boys' Under-16 category by five strokes.

BROGAN TOWNEND TAKES U16 GIRLS' CROWN

Holly Clyburn wins Under-21 girls' title

in Faldo Series Final in Brazil

FROM COLIN FARQUHARSON
Only limited news coming out of Brazil concerning the final round of the Nick Faldo Series Grand Final.
Conditions must have been bad for the last day.
English girls champion Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) shot a closing 80 - but won the Girls' Under-21 title with a total of 229.
Her mum Allison says:
"Holly has been bitten to bits by mosquitoes and felt ill while playing her round. It was hot and humid and her putter did not work as well as the day before (when she had a two-under-par 70)."
First and second-round leader Carly Booth (Comrie) was runner-up in the Under-21 girls' category. She had a closing round of 84, to finish two shots behind Holly Clyburn on 231. Hannah Barwood (Knowle) had an 81 to finish third on 233.
Brogan Townend from Lancashire won the Under-16 girls' title by five shots with a total of 232. She shot a very good 74, including two birdies, on the last round. Well done, Brogan!
Heidi Baek was joint runner-up with Vitoria Teixeira (Brazil) on 237. Heidi closed with a 79, Vitoria with an 82.
Hopefully, the Nick Faldo Series website will come up with more news and the final totals later today.
In the meantime, many thanks to Allison Clyburn for some news about how it all finished in Brazil!

The 20-year-old, pictured, the only European on the college's 12-strong golf roster, had rounds of 77 and 72 for a total of 149 over the par-72, 6,835yd course. He finished five shots behind the winner Clement Batut (Oklahoma Baptist University) who beat one of Ogston's team-mates, Derek Brown, at the second hole of a play-off after they had tied on 144. Batut had a pair of 72s, Brown 75 and 69.

NEIL HENDERSON NOT FLYING AT KITTY HAWK
==
Neil Henderson from North Berwick, a past winner of this weekend's Scottish junior champion of champions' boys' title, finished joint 34th of 90 in the ODU Seascape college tournament at Seascape Links Golf Club, Kitty Hawk - famous for the first flight by the Wright Brothers in December 1903 - North Carolina. Henderson, a student at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia, had rounds of 74 and 78 for 152 - 16 shots behind the winner, team-mate Eric Onesi with scores of 69 and 67 for four-under-par 136 over a 6,131yd course

TOM BROWN'S SCHOOLDAYS CONTINUING AT OLE MISS
==
Tom Brown from Hertfordshire, a freshman student at Mississippi University (Ole Miss), finished joint 38th in a field of 75 at the David Toms Intercollegiate, played at the Country Club of Louisiana, Baton Rouge.
Tom had rounds of 76, 71 and 71 for a two-over-par total of 218 over the 6,849yd course. James Taverner from London, now a student at Southeastern Louisiana University, came in joint 54th on 222 with scores of 78, 67, 77 (great second round!).

JAMIE CHAPMAN A HERO FOR LMU TEAM
==
Jamie Chapman, a freshman student from Sussex at Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate in the state of Tennessee, clinched team victory for his college in the LMU Fall Invitational at Woodlake Golf Club, Tazewell, Tennessee by finishing 25th!
Lincoln Memorial University (LMU for short) tied with North Greenville on 576. The tie-breaker was a comparison of the scores of the fifth team member on either side. Jamie's 149 total (72-77) was better than the fifth man in the North Greenville line-up - and so LMU were the team title winners.
Aberdonian Tom Rennie, a Deeside Golf Club member and student at Brevard College, North Carolina finished joint 40th on 155 with scores of 77 and 78.
The tournament was played over a course measuring 6,771yd with a par of 72.
==

==
Anglo-Scot Stuart Ballingall, a freshman student at Missouri University, shot three steady rounds of 71, 70 and 71 for a four-under-par total of 212 to finish joint sixth in the highly-competitive Aldila Scenic City Invite college tournament at the quaintly-named Council Fire Golf Club at Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Ballingall, a Dunston Hall GC member from Norwich, finished only two shots behind the three players to tied for first place on six-under-par 210: Dustin Garza (Wichita State) (69-68-73), Hunter Green (Middle Tennessee) (69-70-71) and Kent Bulle (Middle Tennessee) (72-68-70).
Winner of the Scottish boys' match-play championship in 2007, Paul Ferrier from Baberton, a second-year student at Charlotte University, finished joint 64th in a field of 90 players with scores of 74, 77 and 80 for a disappointing 15-over-par total of 231.
Mind you, it was a very long course, just one yard short of 7,000yd with a par of 72.

Anna and Meaghan share South Korea lead

Anna Grzebien and Meaghan Francella shared the first-round lead on the six-under-par 66 mark in wet but warm weather at the LPGA Tour's KOLON Championship at Incheon, South Korea today.
Tour money leader Jiyai Shin didn't disappoint her home fans, shooting a bogey-free 67 to finish a stroke off the pace. Shin missed out on a chance to join the leaders when her birdie putt on the 18th hole came up just short. She is tied for third along with four other players, including 19-year-old American Vicky Hurst.
"There was no wind out there and the course and green conditions were fabulous," Grzebien said. "When the ball rolled it wasn't fast or slow."
Francella also praised the conditions of the putting greens.
"The greens were one of the best, if not, the best that we've seen all year," said Francella, seeking her first win since 2007.
Hurst was 5 under on the back nine after recording her first career hole-in-one on tour on No. 12. She has three top-10 finishes in 18 events this year and is currently fourth on the Rookie of the Year list.
British Open champion Catriona Matthew from North Berwick is in a logjam for third place on 67, one shot off the pace.

for second place in Kiawah Island tournament

Ireland's Sinead O'Sullivan shook off the bout of flu which forced her to retire after two rounds in her previous event to finish joint second in the Palmetto Women's Intercollegiate tournament over the Kiawah Island Oak Point course, South Carolina.
Sinead, from Galway, a student at East Tennessee State University, had rounds of 74, 69 and 74 for a one-over-par total of 217 over the 5,916yd course. She tied with Mallory Fraiche (Arkansas-Little Rock) (72-74-71), four shots behind the winner, Jessie Hollandsworth (Maryland) with 69, 68 and 76.
Georgia State University freshman student Ellie Robinson from Middlesbourgh had rounds of 77, 77 and 79 for a total of 233 and a share of 55th place in the field of 93 players.
Sinead's effort helped East Tennessee State win the team event by 16 shots from Kansas in a field of 18 teams.

Stephanie Meadow chooses

University of Alabama

for August 2010 start

Stephanie Meadow, the rising teenage star from Northern Ireland, based in the United States as a student at the Hank Haney Junior International Golf Academy at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, has made up her mind about which United States university she is going to go to next August.
Stephanie and her parents had a range of leading American colleges keen to add the name of one of America's top 10 girl golfers to their roster. They have plumped for the University of Alabama.
Stephanie, who is in the GB&I preliminary squad for next year's Curtis Cup match in the States, finished 13th at the recent Ping Invitational in a field of the top 27 girls in the United States.
The event was held over Oklahoma State University's course at Karsten Creek, Stillwatter.
Stephanie's dad, Robert Meadow, told "Kirkwoodgolf.co.uk"
"It was one of the most difficult courses I have come across. The greens were running at 13 (which is very fast indeed)."
Stephanie has been named in The Rolex Junior 2nd Team All-American. She finished 14th on the Polo Rankings, narrowly missing out on a place in the 1st Team award. The top 12 gain the 1st team.
On the Golfweek ranking system Stephanie is presently No 10 in the USA.
Robert Meadow says his daughter's forthcoming schedule is:
November 6-8: Golfweek Invitational.
November 21-27 - Polo Golf Junior Classic.
January 6-9: Orange Blossom Tour - Harder Hall Women’s Invitational
January 13-16: Orange Blossom Tour South Atlantic Amateur Championship (known as The Sally).

CARLY SHOWS HER CLASS TO LEAD IN BRAZIL

Comrie teenager Carly Booth surged two strokes clear of the girls' championship field on the second day of the Nick Faldo Series Grand Final at Itanhanga Golf Club, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil today.
The 17-year-old Carly had an excellent second round of 70 over the par 72 laldies' course, improving by seven strokes on her first-day score of 77 when the players had to cope with torrential rain.
With one round to go, Carly is on 147 - two shots ahead of English girls' champion and fellow Curtis Cup squad member Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) who has had rounds of 79 and 70 for 149.
Former English women's amateur champion Hannah Barwood (Knowle) is on 152 with scores of 78 and 74.
The lowest 36-hole totals in the boys' championships - boys' course par is 72 - have been achieved by Jonathan Bell (Royal Blackheath) and James Watts (East Herts) who are both on the five-under-par 139 mark.
Bell leads the Under-18s boys section with rounds of 70 and 69 while Watts is the Under-21 boys' leader after a superb second round of eight-under-par 64, including six birdies and an eagle 3 at the fifth. His first round was a 75.

NO PLAY-OFFS AT 2010 LADIES' BRITISH OPEN AMATEUR

AND GIRLS' BRITISH OPEN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY LADIES GOLF UNION
There will be no play-offs to decide the precise number of qualifiers for the match-play stages of next year’s Ladies British Open Amateur Championship at Ganton Golf Club and also the Girls’ British Open Amateur Championship at Royal Belfast Golf Club.
Instead, a card countback will be used as the means of deciding all qualifying places. Play-offs have been known to last for hours, on occasion finishing in darkness and the restarting the following day. This did nothing to help the smooth running of the tournaments and players often incurred additional costs and travel delay while they waited to see if they would be involved.
The Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship will be held at the Yorkshire venue from June 22 to 26, beginning only nine days after the conclusion of the Curtis Cup match at Essex County Club, Massachusetts (June 11 to 13).
Spain’s Azahara Munoz, winner of the title at Royal St David’s Golf Club, Harlech this year, has since turned professional and already won an event on the Ladies’ European Tour.
The handicap limit for the Girls’ British Open Amateur Championship, to be played at the prestigious Northern Ireland venue from August 9 to 13, is being reduced from 9.4 to 8.4 in recognition of the fact that the general standard of play among the entrants for the Under-18 years’ championship is improving every year.
There will be a total ban on caddies at the Girls’ British Open Amateur Championship. Previously, the ban covered only a golf professional, relative or guardian acting as a caddie in this tournament.
Caddies will continue to be permitted at the Girls’ International Matches which will be hosted by Bangor Golf Club, Northern Ireland , from August 4 to 6 and the restriction on a golf professional, relative or guardian acting as a caddie will remain in place.
The Ricoh Women’s British Open Championship has another Lancashire venue, Royal Birkdale Golf Club, from July 29 to August 1.
The pre-qualifying will be held over The Berkshire Golf Club’s Blue Course on July 12 and the final qualifying at Hillside Golf Club, Southport a fortnight later on July 26.
Wales will have two main events on the LGU 2010 calendar.
The Ladies’ British Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship will be played at Tenby Golf Club, Pembrokeshire from August 18 to 20, and Wales , champions at Wrexham in 2008 and Irvine in 2009, will be seeking an historic hat-trick of titles when the Home Internationals are played on home soil at Whitchurch Golf Club from September 8 to 10.
Scotland plays host to the Senior Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship at West Kilbride Golf Club, Ayrshire from September 14 to 16.
Scotland’s defence of the Sue Johnson Trophy in the Senior International Matches will take place at Sheringham Golf Club, Norfolk from September 28 to 30.
Entries for all tournaments are now available online via the LGU website at www.lgu.org.

Top-10 finish for Hannah Lovelock

in Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown

Hannah Lovelock, a sophomore (second-year) student at Missouri University, achieved a creditable top-10 finish in a field of 90 for the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at Boulder Creek Golf Club, Boulder City in the state of Nevada this week.
Hannah, pictured, who hails from Surrey, finished joint ninth after a great opening round of three-under-par 69 over a 6,233yd course. She couldn't quite maintain that standard of performance but subsequent scores of 75 and 77 gave her a 54-hole final total of 221 - 12 shots behind the two-shot winner, Sherlyn Popelka (Arizona) who scored 69, 69 and 71 for seven-under 209.
Hannah's Missouri team-mate Nicola Race, from Essex, is still searching for the form that saw her head-hunted from a smaller US university for the start of the 2009-2010 college golf season. . She finished joint 63rd on 234, made up of scores of 75, 82 and 77.
England international Ellis Keenan from Sunningdale, a freshman student at the Universtiy of Nevada Las Vegas, also disappointed. She started well enough with a one-over-73 but tagged a pair of 82s on to that for a total of 237 which saw her finished joint 78th.

Arizona pulled off a double by winning both the individual and team titles. Their 878 total won the team race by five shots from Florida with Louisville (886) third.

Rising star from Essex Daisy Dyer enters

Hacienda del Alamo Festival

Essex teenager Daisy Dyer is the latest high-profile player to enter the 2010 Hacienda del Alamo Women's & Girls' Golf Festival at the five-star Murcia Golf Resort from February 13 to 20.
Here's what the English Women's Golf Association website had to say about Daisy, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, earlier in the summer:

Essex teenager Daisy Dyer set a new course record on her way to a six-shot victory in the inaugural EWGA East Region girls’ championship at The Links, Newmarket.
Daisy, from Chigwell, shot a three under par 69 in the first round, followed by a two-over 74. Her morning score is a new course record following alterations lengthening the course.
The record was one of a string of achievements for Daisy, 18, who is a member of EWGA’s Select South East Squad. It was the first time she had broken 70 in competition and, as this was her last junior event, it meant she signed off in style.
“I am really pleased, I really wanted to win this,” she said. Her win also marked an impressive return from injury after she sprained her wrist at the British girls’ championship. “Just two days ago I thought I would have to withdraw,” said Daisy.

More details and an entry form for the Hacienda del Alamo Festival can be obtained by clicking on the relevant words at the top of the left hand column on this website's Home Page.
Among the early entrants are English women's champion Charlie Douglass, English girls' champion Holly Clyburn and British women's stroke-play championship runner-up Hannah Turland.
They all played in this year's Festival - and went on to have super seasons.
The Curtis Cup selectors will be studying the results from the 2010 Hacienda del Alamo Festival because they are picking the team of eight for the United States match before the end of April.

Golf clinics and a skills challenge are scheduled for later in the week.
Faldo commented: “It was great to have the opportunity to welcome such a strong field of talented young golfers to Brazil today and I look forward to watching the tournament unfold as the week progresses.
"Our intention is to offer these young golfers an experience that replicates some of the challenges that they will experience as professional golfers, whilst also offering them an insight into what it takes to compete at the highest level in the modern game. I hope that our efforts can help to prepare them for those realities and wish all of the players the very best of luck for the week.”
The 54-hole R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking tournament is supported by The R&A, the European Tour, Golf Corporate Brazil and the Secretary of State for Sport and Tourism of Rio de Janeiro. In addition to events for the amateur elite that have joined Faldo in Rio this week, there will also be a number of grass-roots activities for local children.
The five category winners will be invited to the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final at Mission Hills in China and the overall boy and girl champion will receive a start in a professional event respectively.
The tournament will be decided on Friday when Faldo will present the Harold Riley Prize to this year’s Faldo Series Champion, following in the footsteps of previous Faldo Series winners, Nick Dougherty, Rory McIlroy and Oliver Fisher.

Editor's note: Sorry we cannot provide you with more scores than you have read above in the News Release ... but we are trying to coax them out from the organisers!

Sammy Vass improving as she gains

experience of American conditions

Tain teenager Sammy Vass - she has her 18th birthday earlier this month - is beginning to find her feet on the highly-competitive US college circuit.
In her latest competition as a University of Central Florida student, Sammy broke 80 twice in the three-round Pat Bradley Invitational at Pelican Preserve Golf Club, Fort Myers in Florida.
Sammy, pictured right, has not yet made the UCF team but her scores are getting closer to those who are in the five-strong line-up. The college policy of taking Sammy to the competition as a non-team member to gain experience will eventually pay good dividends.
Sammy scores 78, 80 and 78 for a 2o-over-par total of 236 over the 6,193yd, par-72 course. She finished 65th in a field of 81 players.
Lauren Blease (Florida International University) from Kingston, Surrey was the highest placed British student behind individual winner Shena Yang (South Florida) who scored 68, 68 and 72 for eight-under-par 208 and a three-shot win from UCF freshman Valentina Fontaine (69-71-71).
Lauren had rounds of 67 (the lowest of the first round), 77 and 74 for a two-over total of 218, which earned her joint eighth position.
Stacey Rodger (Missouri State) from West Hove, Sussex finished 14th with scores of 78, 74 and 69 (lowest of the third round) for a total of 221.
Andrea Downer (Murray State) from Bramley, Surrey shared 35th place with scores of 73, 76 and 78 for 227.
Nikki Dunn (Florida Interntional), a freshman from Harrogate, Yorkshire had scores of 81, 82 and 86 for 249 and a share of 75th place.
Furman University (870) won the team title ahead of South Florida (877) and University of Central Florida (879) in the 15-team line-up.

MARK THOMSON IN TOP 10 AND WINNING TEAM
AT ARNOLD PALMER GOLF CLUB
Mark Thomson (Ohio Valley) from Broughty Ferry tied for sixth place and helped his college win the team event at the WVIAC Championship at Arnold Palmer Golf Club, Stonewall Jackson Resort near Roanoke, West Virginia.
Over a par-72 course of 6726yd, Mark had rounds of 75, 80 and 77 for a total of 232 - nine shots behind the four-shot winner, Ryan Terdik (Concord) who scored 72, 71 and 80 for 223.
Caldwell Golf Club member Alasdair Forsythe (Davis & Elkins, West Virginia) finished joint 11th with scores of 79, 80 and 79 for 238.
Mark Thomson's team-mates, American J R Jones and Paul Raines from Maidenhead finished runner-up and tied 14th respectively with totals of 227 and 239.
Glasgow's David Shields (Davis & Elkins) had rounds of 79, 85 and 79 for 249 which earned him 23rd place in a field of 65 players.
Robert McCleneghan (Davis & Elkins), also from Glasgow, finished joint 40th on 253, made up of rounds of 92, 76 and 85.
Thomson's effort helped Ohio Valley University (926) win the team title ahead of Concord Unversity (929) with Davis & Elkins College (965) joint third with Fairmont State University in a field of 13 teams.
It was Ohio Valley's first team championship win since 2003. Known as the "Fighting Scots," Ohio Valley are certainly glad they have one in Mark Thomson in their line-up this season.

England's Darren Renwick (Worthing), winner of the Scottish Under-16 boys' open stroke-play championship in 2005 at Longniddry and now a second-year student at the University of Tennessee, finished joint 15th in a field of 84 at the UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate tournament at Forest Oaks Country Club, Greensboro in North Carolina.
Darren, pictured, had tidy scores of 72, 72 and 70 for a totalof two-under-par 214 over a par-72 course of well over 7,000yds: 7,217 to be precise.
Winner was Virginia's Amory Davis with an 11-under-par total of 205, made up of scores of 70, 68 and 67.

Scottish Universities' Ladies Golf League

gets going at Scotscraig, Dundonald next

By SUZIE McINALLY
The Scottish Universities Ladies Golf League played its first competition of the year at Scotscraig Golf Club, Tayport in Fife on Sunday.
It was a great test of golf for all abilities and fortunately we had a much better day than we had expected weather wise. We were lucky after torrential downpour and 75 mph winds on Saturday night to have no rain at Scotscraig and only a moderate breeze.
The field consisted of 33 players from eight universities with a healthy mix of low, middle and high handicaps, and the results were as mixed as the field!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Scotscraig Golf Club for their assistance, both on Sunday and in the lead-up to the competition. They were fantastic and could not have been more help.
The course was in awesome condition and, quite honestly, a joy to play. The food was great and the bar staff were extremely friendly and helpful.
Extra credit should go to Barrie Liddle, the managing secretary, and Alison Harvey, Barrie's assistant, without whom we would not have been able to play the competition.
I would especially like to thank Susan Jackson from Edinburgh and Eleanor Pike from St Andrews who did a bit of running around for me last week and Katie Marshall from Glasgow who consented to going out last to get the girls started so that I could go first and collate the cards when the rest of the field returned. It's all about teamwork!
I hope that this is the start of a great year for Scottish Universities Ladies Golf, and with our new found alliance with the SLGA, I hope that we can go from strength to strength.
The next Stableford will be held at Dundonald Links on Sunday, November 8 and I require the final entries in by Friday, October 30, so if you have any additional ladies to add please do so as soon as possible.
If you have any questions or feedback, please feel free to contact me either through E-mail, or on my mobile (07917 584063).

57 Varieties of Scottish junior skill on

parade at The Duke's on Sunday

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION
By ROSS DUNCAN
The curtain comes down on the Scottish Golf Union’s domestic playing season on Sunday (November 1) with 57 of the country’s leading youngsters competing in the Junior Champion of Champions event at The Duke’s Course, St Andrews.
Some 39 boys and 18 girls form the starting field, comprising of this year’s junior champions at national, area and county level across Scotland, which will be contested over The Duke’s for the first time.
Defending the boys’ title will be Bonnyton’s Andrew McLachlan, who took the honours at Kingsbarns 12 months ago with a superb five-under-par 67. The 17-year-old Scottish boys' international will be looking to end his season on a high but faces tough opposition from a strong group of emerging young talent.
Among his challengers will be firstpointusa.com Scottish boys' stroke-play champion Jack McDonald (Kilmarnock Barassie) who has enjoyed a fantastic season on the junior circuit. The 16-year-old was a double winner on the SGU Junior Tour with victories at North Berwick and his home course before clinching his maiden national title with an impressive five-shot win at Ladybank.
St Andrews’ Ewan Scott will be another name to watch on Sunday, having made history earlier this year by becoming the first Scot to lift the English U14s boys' championship. The young Fifer also finished runner-up in the Scottish boys' U14s championship at Largs in July and will be hoping to make local knowledge count.
Ailsa Bain (Peebles) will be one of the favourites in the girls’ event, having won the Scottish girls' title at Lanark this summer before going on to record two out of two singles wins in her home internationals debut at Fairhaven Golf Club, Lancashire.
Defending champion Carly Booth and young Borders sensation Lesley Atkins miss out, having qualified to play in the Faldo Series Grand Final in Brazil (starting tomorrow), but SLGA Performance Squad members Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies) and Rachel Watton (Mortonhall) take their place in the line-up at The Duke's.
David Scott, manager at The Duke’s, who helped the SGU launch the event two years ago at Kingsbarns, is looking forward to welcoming the youngsters this weekend:
“We are very proud to support the Scottish Junior Champion and Champions and it will be great to see so many talented young golfers playing at The Duke’s. The course is in great condition and will provide the golfers with a testing but very enjoyable challenge.”
“Bringing together the various champions from across the country, both boys and girls, is a great way to round off the season and celebrate the achievements of our junior golfers.” he added.

Yale's Harriet Owers-Bradley from

Nottingham scores first US win

FROM THE YALE UNIVERSITY WEBSITE
(with some additional comments by Colin Farquharson)
BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania - Yales University, Connecticut junior-(third) year student Harriet Owers-Bradley from Nottingham has scored her first individual win on the US women's college golf circuit.
She won the Kelly Gutshall Invitational 36-hole women's college tournament at Saucon Valley Country Club in a play-off after two rounds of stroke-play had produced a tied result (October 17-18).
Owers-Bradley, pictured with the trophy, came into the final day two shots off the lead and tied for seventh, but after shooting the lowest score (a three-over-par 75 over the 6158yd course) of the tournament, she found herself in a tie for first with Lehigh's Rosie Davies. It only took one play-off hole and a 15ft clutch putt for the English student to wind up holding the first-place plaque.
"The conditions were much better today," said Owers-Bradley. "It was a bit damp and cold, but it didn't rain."
Owers-Bradley had shot a 79 in the first round when the tough conditions got the better of the players. Saturday's round saw just nine rounds in the 70s with everyone else in the 80s or higher. The players played the front nine twice due to the awful conditions and slow play by the men's team. In Sunday's second round, the girls played the back nine twice.
"It was tough because you didn't know what was going on," said Owers-Bradley. "It was a really weird tournament. I think our team just had an off weekend."
Owers-Bradley's 75 (+3) brought her even with Davies after 36 holes and it would take one more to decide the tournament champion. The players teed up on the first hole and Owers-Bradley blasted her drive into the rough. Davies ball sailed down the fairway and it was advantage Davies. Owers-Bradley's second shot ended up in the bunker just right of the green, while Davies ended up in the left bunker, and the players were back on even ground.
Owers-Bradley's bunker recovery landed 15ft under the pin. Davies' shot out of the bunker landed six feet above the pin.
"I had a pretty easy putt straight up hill and even though her putt was shorter, it was tougher and downhill," said Owers-Bradley.
Owers-Bradley drained her clutch putt and Davies missed hers, giving Owers-Bradley the win.
"I really wanted to get revenge on the Lehigh course," said Owers-Bradley. "I played this course as a freshman and shot a 14 on one hole. My goal was just to par it (that hole) which I did both days. The whole thing was pretty exciting though."
The rest of the Bulldogs did not find the same success as Owers-Bradley, finishing in fifth place with a total score of 655. A trio of Ivy League teams finished at the top of the leaderboard. Harvard won the whole tournament with a score of 633. Columbia finished three shots behind Harvard in second, with Penn seven shots behind the Lions.
Yale struggled under the conditions in Bethlehem all weekend. Junior Alyssa Roland and freshman Alexandra Lipa finished in a tie for 18th. They matched each other's scores on both days shooting 85 (+13) and 81 (+9). They finished with a two-round total of 166 (+22).
Harriet finished 12 shots ahead of her nearest Yale team colleagues who were placed joint 18th.
The Bulldogs are now done for the fall season and will head into the off-season with one team victory and two individual victories.
"We need to work on a bit of everything this off-season," said Owers-Bradley. "It is going to take a lot of hard work especially on our mental toughness."

LOUISE WON'T LET APPENDIX OP KO

HER FROM SCOTS TEAM FOR TEXAS

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
SLGA Order of Merit winner Louise Kenney is not going to let a recent operation for the removal of her appendix prevent her achieving another highlight in her best season since she was Scottish girls match-play champion in 2000 and beaten finalist the following year.
Pitreavie member Louise, Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle), Paul Shields (Kirkhill) and Mark Bookless (Sandyhills) make up the combined Scotland team who fly out this weekend to Texas for the biennial The Spirit tournament at Whispering Pines Golf Club, Houston, from November 4 to 7.
"I am still going to The Spirit tournament in America," said Louise, a supply schoolteacher.
"I got the go-ahead from the doctor at the Scottish Institute of Sport last week. Obviously I'm not allowed to be hitting hundreds of balls but I'm recovering well and very much looking forward to the trip."
Louise, 26, was beaten finalist in the Scottish women's amateur championship at Southerness in May and won the Angela Uzielli Trophy for finishing fourth in the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Balgownie in August.
She is coached by Spencer Henderson, the Scottish Golf Union's national junior coach.

Final top 10 placings in the 2009 Scottish Ladies Golfing Association Order of Merit are:
1 Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) 3090pt
2 Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle) 2740.
3 Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) 2455.
4 Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) 2375.

7 Jane Turner (Craigielaw) 1613.

Charlie Douglass (left) and Hayley Davis, Festival top-notchers in 2009 ... and bidding for repeat performances in 2010.

Douglass, Clyburn, Turland, Davis ... the stars are

heading back to the Hacienda del Alamo Festival

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
The line-up for the 2010 Hacienda del Alamo February Festival already contains two champions.
English women's amateur champion Charlie Douglass (Brocket Hall, Hertfordshire) will be there again at the five-star Murcia resort.
In February this year, the 20-year-old left-hander paved the way for a stellar 2009 season by winning the two main 36-hole ladies' events at the Festival.
This year, Charlie is going for a three-timer.
She intends warming up for the main events - the 36-hole Murcia Ladies Open on Monday-Tuesday, February 15-16 and the Hacienda del Alamo Ladies Open over 54 holes on Thursday-Friday-Saturday, February 18-19-20 - by taking part in the better-ball pairs competition on Saturday, February 13.
And her partner will be English girls champion Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) who is meantime in Brazil for the Nick Faldo Series Grand Final and will be moving on to Houston, Texas to be one of England's mixed team of four for The Spirit tournament at Whispering Pines from November 4 to 7.
Holly's younger sister India will be taking part in at least one of the Under-16 girls' events.
Hannah Turland, the 15-year-old Hampshire women's champion who all but won the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Royal Aberdeen in August, also had a successful 2009 HDA Festival in February and she is looking for more of the same come February 2010.
The big change is that Hannah, who plays out of the Tidworth club, is sidestepping the Under-16 and Under-18 girls' events to take on the "big girls" in the 36-hole and 54-hole main events.
The big incentive to do well early in the year for Charlie, Holly, Hannah and others chasing a place in the Curtis Cup team for America from June 11 to 13 is that the GB&I selectors will be naming their team of eight to play the United States at Essex County Golf Club, Massachusetts in late April at the conclusion of the Helen Holm Trophy Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play at Troon.
Discounting the "Helen Holm," there are only four "windows of opportunity" to impress the selectors with quality performances against strong oppositions:
1 The Orange Blossom Tour in Florida in January.
2 The Portuguese women's open amateur championship at Oceanico O'Connor on the Algarve (January 28-31).
3 The Hacienda del Alamo Festival (February 13-20).
4 The Spanish women's open amateur championship at Playa de Pals, Girona (March 3-7).

+Entries for the 2010 Hacienda del Alamo February Festival will close in mid-January. Entry forms and details of the events are available by clicking on the heading at the top of the left hand column on this website's Home Page.

+If enough lady professionals were prepared to enter, a special category for them would be introduced at the 36-hole Murcia Ladies Open and the 54-hole Hacienda del Alamo Ladies Open.

US COLLEGE REPORT

Andrea Downer in action for Murray State University, West Kentucky and (above) Channel Islander Olivia Higgins (Charleston Southern).

STOP PRESS: HARRIET OWERS-BRADLEY (Yale University) scored her first individual US college circuit win in the Lehigh University Invitational after a play-off.

Olivia Higgins loses Charleston lead, but comes second
and Andrea Downer finishes joint fourth in Tennessee

Channel Islander Olivia Higgins, a student at Charleston Southern University, and another senior-year student, Andrea Downer (Murray State University, Kentucky) from Bramley, Surrey, achieved the highest finishes by a female British/Irish students on the US college golf circuit over the past two weeks when some of us have been on holiday.
Olivia was the first-round leader with a one-under-par 70 in the CSU Wendy's Invitational turnament at Coosaw Creek Country Club, Charleston, South Carolina but she could not keep up that level of performance in the second round.
Olivia, who will be 22 on December 31, subsided to a 75 over the par-71, 6068yd course for a total of 145. She finished runner-up in a field of 81 players, beaten by five strokes by Spaniard Aruka Fellgueroso (Coastal Carolina) who scored 74 and 66 for two-under-par 140.
Coastal Carolina (586) won the team event by 19 shots from College of Charleston with Charleston Southern (641) seventh of 15 teams.
Andrea Downer finished joint fourth in a field of 90 at the APSU Intercollegiate, played at Clarksville, Tennessee over a 5,960yd course with a par of 72.
Andrea scored 75 and 79 for 154, which suggests the weather was a bit rough. She finished only four shots behind the winner, Megan Bradford (Tennessee Tech) with 78 and 72 for 150.

GB&I international Jodi Ewart (New Mexico University) from Catterick took too long to get into her stride in finishing joint 12th in a field of 90 playeres at the NCAA Fall Preview tournament over a 6,325yd par 72 Dye Course at Landfall Country Club, Wilmington in North Carolina.
Jodi saddled herself with a three-over-par 75 on the first day and in this kind of company, that's a lot of of ground to make up.
Give the Yorkshire lass her due, she scored 73 and 72 over the next two rounds and, had there been a fourth round, she could probably have broken 70!

A total of 220 left her 10 shots behind the winner, Cydney Clanton (Auburn) with three 70s for six-under-par 210 and an impressive five-stroke victory from Brittany Altomore (Virginia) (74-71-70).
Sweden's Camilla Lennarth (Alabama) and Tiger Woods' niece, Cheyenne Woods (Wake Forest), tied for third place on level par 216.
Former British and European women's champion Carlota Ciganda (Arizona State) from Spain opened with a four-under-par 68 - the joint best round of the tournament - but slid back with subsequent rounds of 74 and 76 for 218 and a share of seventh place.
Ellie Givens from Darlington - a student at Denver University - finished a disappointing and disappointed joint 38th in the field of 90 with scores of 73, 76 and 78 for 227.
Duke University (881) won by the narrowest of margins - just one shot - in the team event with Auburn and UCLA joint runners-up on 882 and Arizona State fourth on 889. Denver (889) came eighth of 18th and New Mexico (913) tied for 14th place.

Jacqueline Sneddon (Grand Canyon University) from Meigle had a pair of 80s in finishing joint 16th on the 160 mark in a field of 45 at the Sonoma State Women's Invitational at Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club, Santa Rosa in California.
Over a par-72 course of 5,800yd, the scoring wasn't all that great, which is sometimes a sign that the conditions were tough for everybody.
Claire Rachor (Western Washington) won with 79 and 70 for 149, a shot ahead of team-mate Katie Sharpe (77-73).

Ellie Robinson (Georgia State) tied for 18th place in a field of 90 for the Lady Pirate Invitational over a par-71, 5,939yd course at Greenville Country Club, Greenville in North Carolina.
Ellie, a 19-year-old freshman who hails from Middlesbrough, struggled on the first day with an opening 81 but showed her true colours with a 72 and 71 in the alter rounds of a total of 224.
Laura Holmes (Old Dominion) from Co Mayo scored 82, 78 and 79 for 239 and a share of 66th place.
Irish compatriot and Old Dominion team-mate Emma Gilmore was farther down the field with scores of 81, 81 and 92 for 254 and 79th place.
A third Irish player, Sinead O'Sullivan (East Tennessee State), had to retire with the onset of flu after scoring 81 and 72 in the first two rounds.
Despite that East Tennessee State managed to finish third in the team event behind Georgia State -Ellie Robinson's team - and East Carolina. Old Dominion were last of 15 teams.
Individual winner was Tara McFadden (Elon University) who is probably of Irish extraction but is American born. She had a great second round of 66 between scores of 73 and 72 to win with a 54-hole total of 211, two shots ahead of Abby Boolis (East Carolina) (70-71-72).

Laura Murray and coach Kevin Craggs have a re-think:

Tour School plans put back by twelve months

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Scotland women's golf amateur international Laura Murray has changed her mind about going to the Ladies European Tour Qualifying School in December.
The 21-year-old from Alford, who has worked as a swimming pool lifeguard since she left Robert Gordon University, is going to have another year on the amateur circuit.
"After much discussion with my coach, Kevin Craggs, we have decided to delay my tour school plans until next year. Kevin brought another perspective to my plans and we decided to build up more of an amateur career before taking the leap into the pro ranks," said Laura.

She intends to keep her game ticking over during the winter months by playing on the weekly North-east Golfers' Alliance circuit alongside male club pros and amateurs.

This knock-out alternate shot event was played on Thursday and Friday at a Haddington course in fine condition. The format consisted of two foursomes matches, the winners being decided by aggregate holes up. The first match was a scratch game and the second was a handicap game. Gullane were seeking a “treble” having won the County League and Strokeplay events already.
Tantallon, one of the favourites, were defeated 1 up in the first round by the Musselburgh Old Team, but they in turn were beaten 1 up by Gullane. Gullane therefore reached the final where they faced Craigielaw, recent victors in the Scottish Junior Team Championship. Craigielaw had convincingly beaten Kilspindie and North Berwick on their way to this final.
In superb weather, the two Teams proceeded to do battle. In the handicap game, Duncan McLean and Greg Houlston of Gullane, receiving 1 stroke, struggled to find their form and were soon well behind, mainly due to some fine putting by Gabrielle MacDonald and Jack Dow of Craigielaw.
The real fireworks happened in the scratch game which was between four fine players, some of whom are Scottish Internationals and all of whom have a scratch or near scratch handicap. Greg Smail and Grant Forrest represented Craigielaw whilst Gullane were represented by Lesley Atkins and Rachael Watton. This was a real battle between boys and girls, and the only advantage the girls had was that they played off the Ladies’ tees. However, they were frequently still ahead of the boys after the drives. There was considerable good natured “banter” between these two sides and the match was played swiftly and in fine spirit.
The scoring in this game was excellent, the boys gaining an early lead by having birdies at the 2nd, 3rd and 4th holes. When the overall aggregate match was decided on the 16th green, Greg and Grant were 5 under par, but were only 2 up on Lesley and Rachael! Despite the spectators wanting this exhibition of golf to continue, the match had to end there with Craigielaw having won by 6 & 5 overall.
Haddington Captain Andrew Douglas presented the trophy to the winners. Haddington have always been great supporters of Junior Golf in the County, and Jim Simpson, their Junior Convenor, hopes that their own Team will soon be challenging for trophies again.
