Sammy Vass (89) struggles on debut for

Central Florida on trip to Kentucky

North of Scotland girls champion Sammy Vass from Tain had a disappointing debut first-round appearance for the University of Central Florida (UCF) in the Bettie Lou Evans Fall Invite college tournament at the University Club of Kentucky, Lexington.
Not in the UCF team of five, but taken along to play as an individual and gain experience, Sammy, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, is sharing last place in the field of 82 with a round of 89, which included one triple bogey and three double bogeys.
There are two more rounds to go, weather permitting.
Leading the field was Macarena Silva (Florida State) from Chile with 70, two better than Australian Emma de Groot (Chattanooga), Valdis Jonsdottir (Texas State) from Iceland and Victoria Tomko (UCF).
Steph Gough (Middle Tennessee State) from Aylesbury was the best placed British student, being one of eight players sharing fifth place on 74.
Lauren Blease (Florida International) from Kingston, Surrey is sharing 41st place on 78.
Team-mate Nikki Dunn from Harrogate, Yorkshire had an 82 to be joint 63rd. Nikki too had her problems - a double bogey 5 at the short eighth, a triple bogey 6 at the short 12th and a double bogey 7 at the long 16th but she did get two of these shots back with birdies at the long fifth and 18th.
Saturday's second round was cancelled because of bad weather. The final round, which was going to be the third, will be played on Sunday.

Sally Watson's 74 on debut for

Stanford makes her jt 54th

Heavy rain has washed out today's second round in the Mason Rudolph Women's Championship college tournament at Vanderbilt Legends Club, Franklin in Tennessee.
Curtis Cup Scot Sally Watson made her playing debut for Stanford University, California in the first round. A round of two-over-par 74 for the 6,271yd course was not a bad start by any means - but, astonishingly, 36 players beat the par of 72!
Sally, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, will start Sunday's final round sharing 57th place in a field of 90 after a round which had bogeys at the eighth, 11th and 12th with only one birdie, at the 17th.
Candace Schepperle (Auburn) and Jennifer Song (Southern California) are leading the field, but only by one stroke, with brilliant opening rounds of six-under-par 66.
Spanish ace Carlota Ciganda (Arizona State) had a 71 after running up a double bogey 6 at the second. She birdied the 13th, bogeyed the 14th and then birdied the 16th, 17th and 18th for 33 home.
Auburn and Southern California set a tournament low record of 278 in the team event's first round but they are only two shots ahead of Alabama and Arizona State, so high is the general standard of play.
Stanford scored 287 and are 12th of the 17 competing teams.

Civic reception marks centenary of Lanarkshire

Ladies County Golf Association

By JEAN MACINTYRE
The Civic Reception given by South Lanarkshire Council to mark the Centenary of Lanarkshire Ladies County Golf Association was much enjoyed by those members who attended.
We were made most welcome by Provost Russell Clearie and the councilors and council staff. Following an excellent meal with good wine Provost Clearie gave a short speech then presented LLCGA Officials with small gifts and our Association with a very nice suitably engraved crystal rose bowl.
Captain May Hughes gave an outline of the events of our Centenary year and thanked South Lanarkshire Council for their hospitality and generosity. Honorary President Margo Bauer then presented Provost McClearie with a small gift from LLCGA.
Thanks must go to Margaret Armstrong, Administration Officer of SLC for organising the evening.

Hay and Carnie shoot two-under-par over 36

holes ... but finish joint 33rd in Georgia

America-based Scots Gavin Hay from Glasgow and Grant Carnie from Ellon, Aberdeenshire had another thing in common this week - they tied for 33rd place on two-under-par 146 in the State Farm Laker Collegiate tournament at Crystal Lakes Golf Club, Hampton in Georgia.
The general standard of scoring was surprisingly good over a longish course (7,202yd) with a par of 72.
The fact that Hay and Carnie finished so far down a field of 84 players with two-under-par scores underlines the fact that an awful lot of their rivals played very well.
The winner, Chris Carlin (Barry University) hit the 11-under-par mark with rounds of 67 and 66 for 133 to finish two ahead of Daniel Stanley (Newberry) with 66 and 69.
Hay, who hails from Glasgow and is a freshman student at Carson-Newman University in Tennessee, scored 75 and 71 for 146.
Carnie, who was transferred during the "close season" from Brevard College to the University of South Carolina-Aiken, shot 146 the other way round, 71 first, 75 second.
Andrew Bate (Clayton State), a sophomore student from Birmingham finishe djoint 37th with 72 and 75 for 137.
Glasgow's Mark Dickson, also Clayton State, scored 76 and 77 for 154 and a share of 72nd place.
Another Glaswegian, Clark Nelson (Clayton State), who has also studied at Stirling University, finished joint 79th on 160 with rounds of 82 and 78.

Newberry College (562) won the team title from Georgia College (566) and Barry University (567).
Carson-Newman 5976) finished sixth of 16th.

Lynn Kenny in top 10 as Vikki Laing

crashes out with a 79 in Tenerife

Vikki Laing crashed out of the Ladies European Tour's Tenerife Open with a second-round 79, eight shots more than her opening day effort. The Musselburgh maid's 150 total was one shot too many to beat the cut
Better news of Scots was Lynn Kenny returning a three-under-par 69 to be sharing 10th place on 143. And Pamela Feggans shaved eight shots off her first-day 77 with a 69 for 146 which made her the No 2 Scottish qualifier ahead of Clare Queen (71-147) and Krystle Caithness (77-148).
Becky Brewerton leads the field after a 69 for nine-under-par 135. The Welsh player has gone three shots clear of Beatriz Recari (Spain) with Germany's Anja Monke in third place on 139.

SCOTS GIRLS CHALK UP BIG-MARGIN WINS

CARLY BOOTH (left) and LESLEY ATKINS (above)

ARE BOTH BRAZIL-BOUND IN OCTOBER

Classy Carly's 69 and Lesley's ace put two

Scots girls on Faldo plane for Brazil

Comrie's Carly Booth, after a brilliant round of 69, Lesley Atkins (Minto), with the help of a hole in one, Ranfurly Castle's Sam Binning after a play-off drama, Scott Young of Turnhouse and Ewan Scott (St Andrews) today earned themselves a place in the sun … an all-expenses-paid trip to Brazil next month to be precise.
The five topped their categories in the Nick Faldo Series Scottish Final over 36 holes of the Renaissance Club course at Archerfield Links and gained automatic places in the Grand Final, to be held at Itanhanga Golf Club, Rio de Janeiro from October 28 to 30.
Binning forced a play-off with Adam Dunton (McDonald Ellon), the overnight leader in the boys' Under-21 section with a second round of 74 for 153. Dunton had scores of 76 and 77 and Binning completed his joy with a winning birdie 2 at the short hole chosen to start the sudden-death shoot-out for a seat on the plane to Brazil.
Robert Carson (Dalmahoy) was only one shot away from making it a three-way play-off. He had a pair of 74s for 154.
Scott Young (Turnhouse) maintained his halfway lead in the boys' Under-18 section with a 75 for 148 – four shots ahead of Colin Robinson (Largs) (75-77) and Conor O'Neil (Glasgow) (77-75).
Brora's Calum Stewart, who qualified for Brazil last year, lost his overnight lead in the boys' Under-16 section and with it the chance for a repeat trip to South America. Calum sagged from a 76 to an 80 over the par-71 course for a total of 156.
The winner in this category was Ewan Scott from the St Andrews club with 78 and 76 for 154. He finished a stroke ahead of the Scottish Under-16 champion, Grant Forrest (Craigielaw) who had rounds of 77 and 78.
The two girls' sections were won by runaway margins.
Curtis Cup player Carly Booth, now 17, had a superb second round of two-under-par 69, which must have broken the ladies' record of the Renaissance Club course. Her total of 145 was 13 shots ahead of English challenger Jenna Birch (Royal Lytham) who qualified for Brazil last year.
Carly, in the GB&I squad again for the 2010 Curtis Cup match in America, was in brilliant form with birdies at the first, the long sixth, the 16th and the short 17th in halves of 35 and 34. She dropped shots to par at the fourth and seventh.
Borders women's champion and Scotland girl cap Lesley Atkins, only 14 years of age, won the girls' Under-16 category by 12 shots, including a hole in one with a No 9 iron at the ninth in her round of 76 for 154. She also had a birdie 3 at the 12th in halves of 38.
Runner-up was St Andrews' Lauren Whyte (St Regulus) with a pair of 83s for 166.

Heather MacRae has high hopes she can make

presence felt on men's Tartan Tour in 2010

FROM THE EDINBURGH EVENING NEWS WEBSITE
By MARTIN DEMPSTER
Gullane trainee professional Heather MacRae reckons she can make her presence felt when competing against the men on the Tartan Tour next year.
The former British women's open amateur stroke-play champion missed the cut when she became only the second woman to play in the Scottish Professionals' Championship at Gleneagles earlier this season.
She's since played in another couple of events against the men and is doing so again in this week's PGA World Hickory Open at Gullane.
"This year has definitely given me the confidence that I can play and compete with the men," said MacRae. "Next season I want to turn up at events playing well and not feeling tired. I'm not saying I can win events against the men but I know I can compete with them."
MacRae was speaking after her first round in the hickory event, an 84 - 11 strokes behind the leaders - being an improvement on her debut last year, when it was played over one round.
Heather's boss at Gullane, Alasdair Good, playing with hickory shafts for the first time, was one of three sharing the lead on 73.

Thirteen-year-old Casie has hole in

one at LPGA Tour event

FROM THE PGA.COM WEBSITE
DANVILLE, Calif. (AP) -- Sophie Gustafson is on a bit of a roll, one that's been long overdue.
Gustafson, the long-hitting Swede who won the last of her four career LPGA Tour victories in 2003, shot a 7-under 65 on Thursday to take a two-stroke lead after the first round of the CVS/pharmacy LPGA Challenge.
Gustafson had eight birdies and a bogey on the Blackhawk Country Club course, continuing her recent streak of solid performances that include three top-10 finishes in her previous five tournaments.
"You never know what can happen, but it's always nice to have that bit of history," Gustafson said. "I have good confidence now. It is never enough, though."
Sophia Sheridan, playing in her third tour event of the year, matched Angela Stanford and Na Ri Kim at 67. Top-ranked Lorena Ochoa had five straight birdies in a 68 that left her three strokes back along with 2006 winner Karrie Webb, Shanshan Feng, Kyeong Bae and Mikaela Parmlid.
Jiyai Shin opened with a 72. She has a tour-high three victories, leads the player of the year and rookie of the year points races and also tops the money list.
Defending champion In-Kyung Kim struggled to a 73.
Ochoa was in the middle of the pack before the string of five consecutive birdies pushed her near the top of the leaderboard. She came up a foot short of an eagle on the par-5 No. 11 then ran her birdie attempt on No. 13 just left of the cup, then had a bogey on No. 14 to drop four strokes back.
"It was a good day," Ochoa said. "It is getting a lot more harder than the practice rounds. This course is one where you need to have a good strategy because if it gets a little bit windy, it (could) be tough."
Gustafson had it fairly easy all afternoon. She had four birdies over a six-hole span on the front to hit the turn at 4 under, then added another four birdies on the back nine. Only a bogey on No. 14 -- a hole that seemed to give nearly every player fits -- prevented Gustafson from extending her lead.
A member of the European Solheim Cup team, Gustafson missed the cut in four straight tournaments beginning in May and also missed the cut at the U.S. Women's Open before starting to turn her season around with a runner-up finish at the Evian Masters in late July, losing to Ai Miyazato in a one-hole playoff.
The Swede had to save par out of the sand twice Thursday and stayed out of trouble the rest of the afternoon to take the first-round lead.
Casie Cathrea, a 13-year-old playing on a sponsor exemption after winning a qualifier Monday, made a hole-in-one on the 155-yard 12th and finished with a 74.
Cathrea had a small crowd following her all afternoon and the bubbly teenager gave them something to remember with her ace on No. 12. But the high school freshman had a double bogey on No. 13 and bogeyed No. 14 to fall off the pace.
"It went OK today," Cathrea said. "I wasn't actually like hyped up until I got to the golf course and I knew I was finally here. Mostly I just really wanted to play with the Tour people and see what they do differently than I do so I could learn what they do."
Sheridan, whose previous career-low was a 70, was 2 under at the turn before making her run. She had a birdie on No. 10, eagled No. 11, then added another birdie on the par-5 No. 15th before a bogey on No. 16 left her tied for second.
Ochoa had predicted scores would be lower at Blackhawk than in past tournaments and she was right. Thirty-five players broke par and 10 were within four shots of the leader.
Webb was one of four former tournament winners within striking range. Suzann Pettersen and Helen Alfredsson were four shots back at 69, while Christina Kim had a 70. Two-time winner Juli Inkster opened with a 71, and Se Ri Pak had a 72.

CARLY LEADS CHASE TO BRAZIL

BRAZIL, HERE THEY COME

… IF CARLY & CO CAN STAY

AHEAD IN FALDO QUALIFIER

Curtis Cup teenager Carly Booth, Lesley Atkins from Minto, Ellon's Adam Dunton, Scott Young (Turnhouse) and Brora's Calum Stewart need one more good round tomorrow to book a seat on the plane from Britain to Brazil next month.
At the halfway stage of the Faldo Series' only Scottish qualifying tournament, at the Renaissance Club, Archerfield in East Lothian, they lead their age/sex categories, the winners of whom will win all-expenses-paid trips to the Itanhanga Country Club, Rio de Janeiro for the Faldo Series Grand Final.
Stewart's been there, got the T-shirt, by winning his category last year, which is all the incentive he has needed to lead the Under-16 boys' section, in windy conditions, with a 76 (39-37).
But he has several boys breathing down his neck.
Grant Forrest (Craigielaw) (36-41) and Ross Proctor (Forres) (38-39) are only a shot behind on 77.
Anthony Blaney (Liberton) (39-39), Liam Johnston (Dumfries & County) (39-39) and Ewan Scott (St Andrews) (39-39) are also still well in the mix on the 78 mark.
It's just as tight in the Under-18 boys' section with Scott Young's 73 (35-38) – the best round of the day – giving him only a one shot advantage over former pro footballer's son Ian Redford (St Andrews New) (36-38) with Colin Robinson (Largs) (38-37) just one more shot back in third place.
At Under-21 boys level, it's North-east player Adam Dunton who is setting the pace with a 71. Out in 35, the Ellon lad struggled a bit into the wind to take 41 shots for the inward journey, but all his rivals had the same probems.
Dunton is just a shot ahead of Robert Carson (Dalmahoy) (36-41). Third place is held down by Sam Binning (Ranfurly Castle) with a 79 (39-40).
In the girls' events, Carly Booth, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency in the women's home internationals at Irvine GC, has a four-shot lead in the Under-21s with halves of 36 and 40 for a 76. Her nearest rival is Jenna Birch who had halves of 41 and 39. Jenna made the journey up from Lancashire, having played in the Brazil Grand Final 12 months ago and finished runner-up to the then English women's champion, Hannah Barwood.
In the girls' Under-16 level, Lesley Atkins (Minto), who played for Scotland's Under-18 team this year, has a five-shot cushion against things going wrong in the second round. Lesley went out in 42 but had an excellent inward half of 36 (four shots better than Carly Booth).
Lesley's nearest challenger is St Andrews' Lauren Whyte (St Regulus) on 83 (41-42) with Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe) third on 85 (41-44).

2009 SENIOR LADIES’ HOME INTERNATIONAL MATCHES
Newport Golf Club, Wales
September 29 - October 1, 2009

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY LADIES GOLF UNION
Wales will be seeking to win the Sue Johnson Trophy for the second year in a row when the Senior Ladies’ Home International Matches are played on home turf at Newport Golf Club from 29th September to 1st October.
At Little Aston Golf Club last year, the Welsh became the first country to break England’s stranglehold on the title. They had previously won the championship every year since the over-50s tournament was first played at Whittington Heath in 2003. If they can repeat last year’s achievement, Wales will complete a magnificent double for the Principality’s female amateur golfers. A few weeks ago, at Irvine Golf Club, Ayrshire, Wales successfully defended the Women’s Home Internationals crown, coming from behind in the last hour’s play of the last day to beat Scotland who had looked to have one hand on the trophy.
Wales’ seniors have come a long way in the past 12 months. Perhaps surprise winners of the title at Little Aston, they can justifiably claim to be the favourites this time round.
Judging by their individual results in the recent Senior Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship at Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club, South Wales, Wales really do have an outstanding chance.
Former Curtis Cup player and many times Welsh amateur champion, Vicki Thomas (Carmarthen) won the Senior British title for the first time in impressive fashion, building up a big enough lead to be able to compensate for a final round without a single birdie.
Welsh team-mates Janet Doleman (Rushcliffe) and Jean O’Connor, who will be playing over her home Newport course, finished joint fourth … Jane Rees (Hendon) came seventh … and Ann Lewis (Royal St Davids) and Denise Richards (Bargoed) finished joint eighth.
In shooting terms, that was an excellent “grouping,” and one that should mean strength in depth for the Welsh team at Newport.
England will however still be hard to beat with Rozalyn Adams (Addington), who finished second behind Vicki Thomas, in the Senior Ladies British Open, Sue Dye (Delamere Forest), Janet Melville (Sherwood Forest) and Chris Quinn (Hockley) forming the backbone of a team that will be going all out to regain the trophy which they held for five years.
On the form shown by the squads at Dun Laoghaire, Ireland in the European senior ladies’ championship – in which, incidentally, Wales did not enter a team – England, who finished third, should have the edge over Scotland (sixth) and Ireland (eighth).
The top Scots performers in the Senior Ladies British Open amateur were Lorna Bennett (Ladybank), who made the top 10 for the second year in a row, St Andrews hotelier Fiona de Vries (St Rule) who shared 15th place, and Noreen Fenton (Dunbar) who finished joint 23rd.
Unfortunately, Lorna has had to withdraw from the Scotland squad for family reasons. She is replaced by Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose).
Ireland’s highest placed finished at Pyle & Kenfig was Helen Jones (Strabane) in joint eighth position with Sheena McElroy (Grange) and Marilyn Henderson (Castlerock) filling the 25th and 26th placings in the final totals.
There are slight differences for the format of the Senior Ladies’ Home Internationals in comparison to the other home internationals organised by the Ladies’ Golf Union.
Teams have only seven players, one fewer than the ladies and the girls. The number of morning foursomes, three, is the same but there are only five afternoon singles instead of six.

Hayley Davis wins Liphook Scratch

Cup on countback after 143 tie

with Hannah Ralph

Dorset teenager Hayley Davis from Ferndown pipped Cowdray Park's Hannah Ralph for the Liphook Scratch Cup at the weekend.
Hannah, winner of the South Region Championship held at Liphook in July, had a 36 hole total of one-under-par 143 with rounds of 73 and 70. Her afternoon round included an eagle 3 at the 485yd 13th.
But for all that, she lost on a count back to 17 year old Hayley, pictured (by courtesy of Caroline Scallon), receiving her trophy and prize vouchers from club captain Anthony Collett. Hayley scored 75 and 68 to win with the better second round.
Junior Solheim Cup player and twice British girls championship beaten finalist, Kelly Tidy (Royal Birkdale) was third, two shots off the pace.
Joint fifth on 147 was Wiltshire youngster Hannah Turland (Tidworth) who looked like winning the British women's open amateur stroke-play title at Royal Aberdeen last month until she suffered a late slump.
Rachel Drummond from Beaconsfield shot a five-under-par 67 (eight under the CSS!) in the afternoon – a new record for the lengthened course used for this prestigious event.
On a glorious warm sunny autumn day, 59 players from all over England took to the golf course at 8 am. Handicaps ranged from +2 to 13 with nearly 30 players under the age of 18.
There were 14 Hampshire players in the field – their top scorer being Emma Powell from Osborne on the Isle of Wight who shot a 36 hole total 155.
Georgina Mundy from Dunwood Manor collected a prize for the best net morning round.

Paul Shields has reached the final of the Scottish boys' match-play championship for the past two years.
Kylie Walker and Louise Kenney were both named last week in the Ladies Golf Union's GB&I squad for the 2010 Curtis Cup match against the United States at Essex County Club in Massachusetts in June.
Kylie, winner of the St Rule Trophy for the past two years, finished second in this year's European women's amateur championship.
Louise Kenney, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf agency in action for Scotland in the recent Women's Home Internationals at Irvine, was the winner of the Angela Uzielli Trophy (best over-23) for a fourth place finish in the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Balgownie in August.

US COLLEGE NEWS

Jacqueline Sneddon 12th in

Arizona shoot-out behind

wonder girl Amy Anderson

Jacqueline Sneddon from Meigle, Perthshire, a student at Grand Canyon University, Arizona, finished 12th in a field of 43 players for the Mountain Shoot-out women's college tournament at Flagstaff, Arizona.
Jacqueline, pictured right, had rounds of 76 and 82 for a total of 158 over the par-72, 6103yd course.
The winner was the US girls champion Amy Anderson who has won her first three events on the US women's college circuit as a freshman student at North Dakota State University - how lucky are they to have signed up such a talented player who might well have gone to one of the top-notchers, such as Arizona State, Duke, etc. Obviously, Amy escaped the notice of the big guns' talent scouts before she won the US Under-18s title.
Amy scored 74 and 70 for 144 to win by NINE strokes from Meghan Bremer (77-76) of Northern Arizona University who won the team title with a total of 628.
Grand Canyon were last of seven with 641.

Hannah and Nicola down the field in Kentucky
Missouri University's pair of English students, Hannah Lovelock and Nicola Race, finished 24th and joint 32nd respectively in the Napa River Cardinal Cup women's college tournament at the Cardinal Club, Louisville in Kentucky.
Over a par-72 course of 6,219yd, Lovelock scored 74, 79 and 74 for 227, five fewer than Race who had rounds of 75, 80 and 77. Nicola and her coach will be disappointed at that performance. They are expecting great things for her this 2009-2010 college golf season after her transfer in from a smaller college where she was a regular winner for its golf team.
Canadian Sara-Maude Juneau (Louisville) was the individual winner on home turf with scores of 72, 69 and 72 for three-under-par 213 - three shots ahead of Stacey Miller (Illinois State) (72-69-75).
Louisville won the team title with a record low total for the tournament of 866 - 32 shots ahead of runners-up Kentucky. Maryland (899 came third) and Missouri (900) fourth of 12 teams.

Course note: One reader has questioned why we almost always give the par and length of the course for US college events. Editor's answer: For one thing these statistics are nearly always listed in the excellent GolfStat results service. If this information were provided as a matter of course for British and Irish tournaments of any description, we would give it, because we think it is important. There's a difference between returning say a score of 75 to 78 over a course of under 6,000yd than there is returning a 75 to 78 over a course of 6,500yd and more. It is noticeable that in recent years, the length of courses for US college golf competitons is increasing year by year. Some of the male students' events are now being played over courses in excess of 7,000yd - far longer than even SGU Order of Merit tournaments.

Orkney children in front of the new practice facility (image by Rob Eyton-Jones)

Royal opening for Orkney Golf Club facility development

NEWS RELEASE FROM CLUBGOLF
HRH The Princess Royal (on Wednesday 14 Oct 2009) will officially open a new practice facility at Orkney Golf Club which will transform junior coaching on the Islands.
Last autumn the Kirkwall based Club was awarded a Ł44,960 grant from sportscotland’s Building for Sport programme for an indoor practice facility. As a result of this funding further grants followed from HIE Orkney and Orkney Island Council. Extra funds in excess of Ł12,000 have been generated by members and parents of the junior members. Generous donations totalling over Ł10,000 have come from The R & A, OGC Ladies section and The Auld Boys.
Work on the new facility began in March, progressed seamlessly through the summer months and, bar a carpet which has to be laid is now complete. The new facility incorporates a covered three bay practice area, a two bay outdoor practice area and nets, four all weather tees and a Huxley putting green.
As an exciting extra the indoor practice area will house a Highland Institute of Sport Strength & Conditioning unit which will benefit the Islands’ Institute Network athletes.
Despite a short season and notoriously wet summers, the Club has, in less than four years, completely transformed its junior section. The catalyst for the junior drive is the national junior golf programme, clubgolf, a partnership between the Scottish Golf Union, the Scottish Ladies' Golfing Association, the Professional Golfers' Association, the Golf Foundation and sportscotland, which emerged from Scotland’s successful bid to host the Ryder Cup in 2014.
In 2005 the Club put five members through clubgolf’s volunteer training course and opened for junior coaching. Within weeks junior coaching numbers had doubled from 20 to 40. This year 75 children registered for coaching. The number of qualified volunteer coaches now stands at 12.
Over the same time period the numbers of children involved in the Club’s weekly competitions has shot up from three to as many as 60. The Club’s third Junior Open in August attracted 88 children, 14 of them girls, from as far afield as Wick, South Ronaldsay and Stromness.
Now, at the point where the season has reached its traditional wind-down, the new facility means that coaching can now keep growing and developing through the winter.
“We are absolutely delighted that HRH The Princess Royal has agreed to support us by opening our new facility,” said Janette Mackie, who with Alistair Learmonth and Stewart Fotheringhame took over the running of the junior section in 2006.
“The facility will be a tremendous boost to the junior section, giving them the opportunity to have coaching all year round. It will develop the children’s quality of golf, which will in turn increase their enjoyment on the course.
“It is the enthusiasm of our children, and their eagerness to learn and improve, that spurred us on to provide this facility for them.
“This has been a fantastic project from which so many juniors and adults will reap the benefits. We would like to thank everyone – our sponsors, supporters, members, children and families - who have all contributed to its development.”
“Casey Construction has done fantastically well in bringing the indoor facility to completion. The finish is outstanding and has blended in with the rest of the Club. The volunteers have also worked extremely hard to help with the building’s interior finish and the external course work. Their team spirit and efforts are very much appreciated and we can’t thank them enough.”
sportscotland Chief Executive Stewart Harris said: "As we build towards the Ryder Cup in Scotland in 2014, it is fantastic to see clubs such as Orkney Golf Club embracing the clubgolf programme and putting junior golf at the very heart of the club.
"We are delighted that our investment of Ł44,960 enabled this important project to go ahead. The numbers of young golfers already lined up to use the practice areas and strength and conditioning unit demonstrates that providing the right facilities in the right location is instrumental in driving sports participation. Orkney Golf Club has created a fantastic facility which I'm sure will serve the needs of the community for many years to come."
Many are the examples of how the resourceful islanders have overcome every obstacle in their way. Their solution to the lack of a PGA Professional on the Islands has been to bring in Professionals to teach highly popular summer schools for the past two seasons.
A spin off of the new facility is that there is now the capacity to install a remote coaching video link. The Scottish Golf Union is providing a lap top and a video camera to enable Orkney volunteer coaches to send action footage of their juniors to the SGU Academy and North Talent ID centres.
One final development – extending the Club’s practice putting green from four to nine holes – should be complete by the spring. The Club is planning a “major binge” of fund raising efforts through the winter to bolster its junior funds.
In the meantime, following its royal seal of approval, the indoor facility will be open and be ready for coaching and practice in just three weeks time.
If anyone would like to find out more about the new practice facility (which will be open to anyone interested in trying out golf and non Orkney GC members are welcome) please contact:

Good start in US by Melissa Siviter from Enville

Melissa Siviter from Enville, a freshman student at Belmont Abbey College, North Carolina, finished joint ninth in her first competition in the United States.
She had rounds of 76 and 80 for a total of 156 over the Pete Dye Course at TPC Sawgrass (Par 72, 6,007yd).
Team-mate Carley Warrington from Bradwell shared 20th place in a field of 80 players with rounds of 79 and 81 for 160.
Winner by eight strokes was Erin Misheff (Ashland University) with scores of 72 and 70 for 142.
Ashland (626) won a very tight at the top team event from Newberry (627) with Belmont Abbey (629) third in a field of 15 teams.

Emma Gilmore from Moylough, Ballinaside, Ireland, a 22-year-old student at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia, tied for 13th place with a round of 73 in the Women's Great Smokies Tournament at Waynesville Inn Golf Resort.
The second and third rounds were washed out.

Former Welsh women's amateur champion Kirsty O'Connor (Ball State University, Indiana) tied for 14th place with rounds of 75 and 76 for 151 in the Cardinal Classic at The Players Club, Yorktown, Indiana over a par-72 course of 6,248yd.
Emily Podzielinski (Eastern Michigan) won with rounds of 72 and 69 for three-under-par 141.
Eastern Michigan (591) won the team title ahead of Ball State (598) with Grand Valley State (599) third in a field of 16.

David McGregor, whose father Bobby McGregor was a world-class swimmer, finished joint 11th in the North-east men's intercollegiate championship at Wintonbury Hills Country Club, Bloomfield, Connecticutt.
Over a par 70 course of 6,711yd, David, from Helensburgh, had disappointing rounds of 75 and 77 for 15-over-par 152. Team-mates Lee Wanklyn from England came joint 26th with 83 and 73 for 156 while Gavin Wilson from Ladybank, Fife finished joint 39th with 78 and 82 for 160.
Obviously too early in the season for the Post University team who have had two good college golf seasons recently.

Double your money: That's what LET

backing will do to NZ Women's Open

Prizemoney in the second New Zealand Women's Open golf tournament will more than double with the announcement that it will be co-sanctioned with the Ladies European Tour.
The inaugural NZ Open this year had prizemoney of $160,000, but next year's tournament, from February 25 to 28, will be at a new venue, the Pegasus Golf Club, and worth more than $400,000.
Pegasus will be the naming-rights sponsor for the tournament with an initial one-year contract, but managing director of Pegasus Town, Bob Robertson, said it is likely the contract will be extended to three years.
This year's tournament was on the Australian Ladies PGA tournament schedule, but co-sanctioning with the European Tour means prizemoney must be a minimum of 200,000 (NZ$410,000).
Robertson said the organisers will also have a fund to help attract highly ranked players to the tournament and they would not necessarily be from the European Tour.
Dean Murphy, the acting chief executive of New Zealand Golf, said the tournament field will be about 140.
"We could go to 156 players because we will have the daylight, but 140 seems to be about the right number."
The field will comprise 50 members of the European Tour, 50 from the Australian Tour, with 20 places for New Zealand professionals and amateurs and 20 places for other players which would include eight to 10 sponsor invites.
The Pegasus course will not be opened until December 5 and the clubhouse and other facilities are still under construction, but will be ready for the opening.
Kiwi-born Liz McKinnon, pictured above, who was based near Inverness when she played on the Ladies European Tour, attended the Press Conference at which the announcement of LET involvement was made. She said the tournament should attract a number of leading European players.
The tournament will follow two co-sanctioned tournaments in Australia.
"Having the extra tournament on the European schedule will make it worthwhile for players to come down here."
Former world No1 Laura Davies played in this year's NZ Women's Open, and it was won by a fellow European Tour member, Gwladys Nocera from France.
The par-72 course of 6300 metres will not be played until December, Robertson said.
"At the moment it is consolidating after winter and we have been lucky with early spring growth."
Robertson said he is confident the course will be ready for the the NZ Women's Open.
"New Zealand Golf have said for a new course, this is one of the most advanced they have seen.
"Normally you could spend up to $500,000 to get the course playable and we haven't had to spend anything."
Robertson said he had the choice to hold the New Zealand PGA tournament, which lost its major sponsor and US PGA Nationwide Tour status this year, or the NZ Women's Open.
"We chose the NZ Women's Open because we wanted to champion the tournament and the city council has come in as co-sponsor."
He is expecting the tournament to attract 20,000 spectators over the week.

Violet Twomey Nominated as Chairman of ILGU Board

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Waterford’s Violet Twomey has been nominated as the new Chairman of the Board of the Irish Ladies Golf Union (ILGU). Her election will be confirmed at the Annual General Meeting in January 2010 and her appointment is for a four-year term of office.
The Board of the ILGU have confirmed her nomination following the recommendations of the Nominations Committee.
Following an EGM held on the 20th September 2008 the membership of the Union agreed to become incorporated as a Company Limited by Guarantee which also included changes to the structure and governance of the organisation. As part of this restructuring, it was decided to introduce the independent position of Chairman of the Board, a role traditionally carried out by the President of the Union.
Prior to retirement, Violet was employed by Hibernian Insurance Co. Ltd. (now Hibernian Aviva) as Executive Head of Planning.
Violet is a member of Newland’s Golf Club in Dublin, where she has been an active member of the Ladies Committee, serving as Handicap Secretary, Vice Captain and subsequently Lady Captain in 2001, as well as Lady Vice President in 2002.
She first became involved with national golf administration in 2006 when she served on the Eastern District for three years and as Chairman of the Eastern District in her final year 2008.
Commenting on her appointment Violet stated “The ILGU is currently going through an exciting period of change and I am delighted to be involved in the management of this change and I look forward with great enthusiasm to the next four years.”
When complete, the board will consist of the President, five District Directors, five Nominated Directors and an independent Chairman. The President and five District Directors are in place and appointment of the Nominated Directors is being staggered over a three-year period to avoid wholesale changes to the board in any one year.

Jodi Ewart second again - even with an

11-under-par total at Albuquerque

Curtis Cup player Jodi Ewart from Yorkshire, a student at the University of New Mexico, finished runner-up again in her latest US college circuit tournament - despite scoring 11 under par.
She was second in her first event of the 2009-2010 US college golf season, again with a 54-hole aggregate of several under par.
This latest tournament was over her home course in the States - the University of New Mexico's at Albquerque, measuring 6187yd with a par of 73.
It was the quaintly-named Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire tournament and it was won with a 12-under-par total of 207 by Kendra Little (Oregon) who scored 71, 68 and 68. In her final round Kendra birdied the ninth, 11th, 13th, 14th, 16th and 17th - and she had to to hold Jodi at bay!
Jodi's rounds were 69, 71 and 68 for 208. In her final round, Miss Ewart came home in 31. She bogeyed the sixth and then birdied the ninth, 10th, 11th, 13th, 17th and 18th.
Taylor Karle (Pepperdine) was third on 211 with rounds of 71, 71 and 69.
England international Ellis Keenan, a freshman at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, was making her debut in this event, having delayed her enrolment until after she had played in the women's home internationals at Irvine.
Ellis scored 74, 74 and 75 for 223 and tied for 22nd place. She had a double bogey 6 at the 15th in her final round or else she would have made the top 20 - which is a good performance, considering she was completely new to playing golf in the States.
A third English player, Natasha Podmore (San Francisco) tied for 70th place on 232 with scores of 81, 79 and 72.
Pepperdine (859) won the team event frm New Mexico (966) with UNLV third on 883 in a field of 18 teams.
Meanwhile, the Lady Paladin Women's Intercollegiate at Furman University's course in Greenville, South Carolina was reduced to two rounds when bad weather made the course unplayable on the final day.
Ireland's Sinead O'Sullivan (East Tennessee State) finished joint 20th in a big field of 24 players. She scored 82 and 74 for 156 over a par-72 course of 6199yd.
Sandra Changkija (Nova Southeastern) won with a three-over-par total of 147 (75-72) from Germany's Stefanie Kirchmayr (Furman) and Mary Mattson (Campbell), both on 149.
Nova Southeastern (611) won the team event from Campbell University (615) with Furman (617) third and Stetson (618 fourth in a field of 17 teams. East Tennessee State came fifth.

Stephanie a stand-out on IJGT in Florida

Meadow has a field day

at Championsgate!

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE INTERNATIONAL
JUNIOR GOLF TOUR
This past weekend, ChampionsGate Golf Club played host to the International Junior Golf
Tour’s (IJGT) first Florida event of the fall season. One of the many premier courses included on the IJGT, the International Course has challenged some of the game’s greatest players as well as their fathers, when it playedhost to the Father-Son Shootout.
The Girls U-19 Division was no exception when it came to great play throughout the weekend. Stephanie Meadow of Antrim, Ireland, tackled the difficult course with skill to give her top honours for the tournament.
Meadow, a Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy stand-out, admitted she hit very well off the tee and was able to control her iron shots which put her in great position on the green.
Stephanie finished level par for the tournament with a total of 144: 74 and 70. Smiling and content with her win, Meadow said, “I really hit well and was able keep my score low. I think this course was very well set-up and although it was difficult at times, it was a good course to play.”
This win is a great start for Meadow who is preparing for the busy fall (autumn) schedule which lies ahead of her.
Following behind Meadow was Mallory Viera who carded scores of 75 and 73 respectively. Yingzhou Yun of Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida was able to play two rounds of steady golf, earning her third place in the division with a tournament total 149.
Weather: Saturday – Sunny, temperatures in the mid 90’s.
Sunday – Sunny, temperatures in the low 90’s.

Stephanie’s next event will be the prestigious PING Invitational where the top 45 boys and 27 girls in the USA compete over three rounds at the Karsten Creek Golf Club, Oklahoma. This is the number 1 ranked junior tournament in the USA.

+Stephanie was last week named in the Curtis Cup preparatory squad of 20 for next June's match against the United States at Essex County Club.

Ireland's day at LGU's

Peugeot Coronation

Foursomes at St Andrews

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Irish eyes were certainly smiling at St Andrews today!
Joan Nelson and Marie Cleary, pictured, from Corrstown Golf Club, Killsallaghan near Dublin Airport won the Ladies Golf Union's Peugeot Coronation foursomes championship grand final over the Eden course – and LGU chairman Brigid McCaw, also from Ireland, had a hole in one at the fifth hole (with a 26 degree Cobra hybrid club) in a non-counting round with LGU president Maureen Lockett at the end of the field.
Pictured above (left to right) at the prizegiving dinner are Marie (left), Catherine Brown of Peugeot (centre) and Joan (right).
Joan, who plays off 22, and 26-handicapper Marie, played extremely well in the Stableford foursomes competition in windy conditions. They were round in a net 66 off half their combined handicap to score 43pt (22-21), including net eagles at the third and the fifth and seven net birdies.
It was their first ever visit to St Andrews and they drove over Ireland via the Stranraer ferry link with their husbands. It's been a trip to Scotland they certainly won't forget it.
The bonus prize for Joan and Marie is a place in the pro-am of the 2010 Ricoh Women's British Open at Royal Birkdale where they will be paired with one of the world's leading professionals.
This is the first year that the LGU has organised area finals in Ireland and thus we are delighted that the winners have come from this new element," said Susan Simpson, the LGU's Head of Golf Operations.
The winning pair finished well clear of the rest of the field with Lincolnshire's Margaret Hartley and Jane Evans, from the Elsham club, finishing second with 35pt (15-20).
Third place was decided on card countback after two pairs totalled 33pts. Anne Preston and Margery Greatbach from the Whickham club, Newcastle had a better inward points half (20 to 15) than Belfast pair Lynda Beggs and Maureen Lee from Belvoir Park.
The 15 pairs who contested the grand final came through an elimination contest which started with local competitions at 1400 golf clubs in Britain and Ireland . From club level, the winners advanced to 15 area finals and the area winners came to St Andrews to contest the grand final.
Top Scots were Fiona Anderson and Jade Anderson from the Montrose Mercantile club with 31pt off 21 of a handicap earning them ninth place.

St Andrews' Scores Hotel to get Ł200,000

refurbishment ahead of 2010 Open

NEWS RELEASE
The Best Western Scores Hotel, overlooking St Andrews' world-famous Old Course, has appointed a new general manager to oversee a Ł200,000 refurbishment ahead of the 150th anniversary Open Championship next year.
Eric Brown, well-known Scottish hotelier, took over the reins at the hotel in July and has wasted no time in preparing a development plan to upgrade large parts of the building, which dates back to the 1880s, before The Open returns to the Old Course next July.
Refurbishment work will include a new canopy at the front of the hotel and replacing windows in keeping with the hotel’s listed status. In addition, all bedrooms are being upgraded to provide four-star facilities and a new golf concierge service with improved golf bag storage and drying facilities will coincide with the re-launch of Chariots Bar next spring.
Brown has a wealth of experience in the hotel industry, having spent six years as managing director of St Andrews famous Rusacks Hotel from 1981-87 and 15 years working as a general manager at various hotels for Stakis and Hilton Hotels organisations.
He said: "I am delighted that the owners have responded very positively to my proposals. The changes will give the Scores a brand new feel and an opportunity to showcase our improvements to the golfing community at The Open Championship next year."
Local surveyors Hardies are working on the details for the front of the hotel, which overlooks the Royal & Ancient clubhouse and the West Sands, where Oscar-winning film ‘Chariots of Fire’ was partly shot.
Planners are also being consulted regarding ‘streetscaping’ in front of The Scores as the hotel aims to take advantage of one of the most iconic views in golf to provide ‘al fresco’ dining in conjunction with Chariots Bar.
As well as the new facilities for golfers, new Victorian-style wrought iron railings will be installed along the front of the hotel while there will be new European-style cafe facilities on the twin terraces opposite Alexander's Restaurant and Scorecards Bar.
In addition, landscaping will be carried out on the hotel’s garden, private car park and its main function suite to allow for marquee facilities and gazebos with barbeques and Brown also proposes a full review of the hotel’s menus with a focus on fresh seafood and Scottish produce.
Brown, who was general manager of the Hilton Dundee from 2000-2007, was recently based in the Highlands as managing director of The Duncraggie Collection and is relishing the chance to work in his adopted hometown again.
Brown, who has had a home in St Andrews with his wife Margaret for the last 28 years, added: "I have been involved in the hospitality business for more years than I can remember, yet it gives me a real buzz to be involved with one of the most famous and historic hotels in St Andrews.
"History seeps from the building and next year is going to be wonderful for me and all the staff in the hotel. We look forward to welcoming the best golfers in the world to St Andrews next year."
As the nearest hotel to the first tee and 18th green of the Old Course, The Scores occupies two former 19th century townhouses and commands magnificent views of St Andrews Bay and the West Sands.
The hotel has 30 en-suite bedrooms, two restaurants and three bars including Chariots, a superb 19th hole.

LPGA TOUR REPORT, SCORES

Na Yeon Choi rallies after losing a seven-hole

lead to win Samsung World Championship

Anyone who loses a seven-stroke lead in a tournament is usually on the slippery slopes of defeat. But not so Na Yeon Choi of South Korea. She let a seven-shot advantage slip through her fingers - and then rallied to win the Samsung World Championship, her first LPGA Tour victory.
Choi finished with a 71 for 16-under 272 and held off runner-up Ai Miyazato of Japan, who shot a 69, the low round of the day at Torrey Pines, San Diego in California.
Choi began the final round with a two-stroke lead, got birdies on two of her first four holes and made a 10ft eagle putt on the sixth hole to extend her lead to seven strokes.
It looked then like Choi, who has won four times on the Korean LPGA Tour, would cruise to her first LPGA Tour victory.
But Miyazato, playing in the group in front of Choi and Jiyai Shin of South Korea, made two quick birdies on Nos. 7 and 8 to cut Choi's lead to five.
Choi missed a tiddler of a putt on the ninth hole for a bogey, cutting the lead to four heading into the back nine.
She continued to struggle with two consecutive bogeys, and Miyazato tied Choi at 16-under with a 4-foot birdie putt on No. 16. Miyazato took the lead shortly after when Choi three-putted for bogey on No. 14.
Then it was Miyazato's turn to make a mistake. With 203 yards remaining for her second shot, Miyazato's 5-wood approach hit the bank in front of the 18th green and rolled into the water. She dropped in front of the pond but could not get up and down for par.
Choi's second shot on the 18th reached the front left of the green and her third shot came to rest 5 feet below the pin. Choi, who had missed several putts of equal or less distance, converted the birdie for the victory.

Kylie's California trip in vain - she fails to

qualify for LPGA Final Tour School

Kylie Walker's long haul to California to play in the LPGA Tour Qualifying School sectional tournament at Mission Hills Country Club ended in disappointment and failure to figure among the 30 players and ties who advanced to the Final Q School at Daytona Beach, Florida in December.
Perhaps the California heatwave eventually got to Kylie. Temperatures were up in the hundreds all week and Kylie's scores may reflect that - 70, 71, 75 and 78 for six-over-par 294.
She finished tied 39th. The limit qualifying scor was 290.
Former US Curtis Cup player and 2008 US women's amateur champion Amanda Blumenherst was the No 1 qualifier with rounds of 70, 67, 65 and 70 for 16-under-par 272.
"I'm used to heat like this - I live in and grew up in Arizona!" said Amanda who is based at Scottsdale.
Spain's British open amateur champion Azahara Munoz from Alcantara was the No 2 qualifier with scores of 70, 66, 71 and71 for 278.
Fourth best qualifier was Emma Cabrera Bello from the Canary Islands. Her brother won the Austrian Open on the European Tour on Sunday! Emma scored 72, 73, 68 and 67 for 280.

Northern Counties are Scottish champions on a
countback after rally to draw with Midlothian

Northern Counties won the Scottish women's county team golf championship in a nail-biting finish to the three-day programme at Baberton Golf Club, Edinburgh today.

Northern Counties and Midlothian, the only two teams with 100 per cent records after two days, met in the title decider – and it ended in a 4 ˝-4 ˝ draw.
The countback of games won previously gave Northern Counties the title (14 ˝-14).

It was Northern Counties' first title win in five years but their fourth win of the decade, having previously been national champions in 2000, 2003 and 2004.
And yet, Northern Counties looked to have suffered a body blow to their title prospects when Kelsey MacDonald (Stirling University and Nairn Dunbar), Scottish Under-21 champion for the past two years, hurt her wrist hacking out of the rough during the morning foursomes and had to be taken to hospital where ligament damage was diagnosed.

With Midlothian taking a 2-1 foursomes lead into the six afternoon singles – and Kelsey hors de combat, it looked odds on that the East Division champions would regain the title they won in 2005 and again in 2007.
Midlothian increased their lunchtime advantage to 4-1 when Jane Turner beat Pam Mackay 4 and 3, and Claire Hargan won by 3 and 2 against Alison Bartlett.
But then Northern Counties tail wagged with a vengeance.
Elgin's Jenny Milne stopped the slide by halving her match with Scotland girl international Rachael Watton.
Then Counties won the last three singles to salvage a halved match and win the title on a countback.
Youngsters Julie Vass (15) and Hannah McCook (16) played like veterans to knock 2pt off the deficit. Tain's Julie beat Karen Marshall 5 and 4 while Hannah, the North of Scotland girls champion from Nethy Bridge, beat the experienced Louise Fraser by one hole.
Then the Northern Counties' ploy of saving their champion, Cara Gruber (Royal Dornoch) for the anchor role in the singles paid a huge dividend. In a tight match that went all the way to the 18th green, Cara beat Claire MacDonald by two holes.
Gruber was Counties' outstanding player of the tournament with 4 1/2pt out of six, just ahead of Hannah McCook and Mary Smith (Tain), each with 4pt. Mary, a senior Scotland international, did not play against Midlothian, either in the foursomes or the singles, after winning 4pt out of four through Friday and Saturday. Instead, she left to play at Blairgowrie on Sunday in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Veteran Ladies Golf Association championship as Highland vets' champion - and she lost by 7 and 6!
Midlothian had the two most successful players over the three days – Jane Turner and Claire Hargan, both with 5pt. Jane won five games out of six, Hargan won all five ties in which she played.
Renfrewshire beat Galloway 7 1/2-1 1/2 to finish third in the table with 1pt. Megan Briggs won 4 1/2pt out of six for Renfrewshire wile sister Eilidh won 4pt.

Today's results:

RENFREWSHIRE 7 ˝, GALLOWAY 1 ˝
Foursomes: Eilidh Briggs and Megan Briggs bt Gillian Monteith and Tracy Milligan 4 and 3; Donna Jackson and Liz Stewart bt Christina Meldrum and Addi Shamash 2 and 1; lare-Marie Carlton and Gillian Kyle bt Sheila McMurtrie and Gwen Robson 1 hole (3-0).
Singles: Megan Briggs bt Monteith 1 hole, Carlton bt Shamash 5 and 4, Eilidh Briggs lost to McMurtrie 1 hole, Alyson McKechin bt Meldrum 5 and 3, Carol Whyte halved with Robson, Kyle bt Milligan 1 hole (4 ˝-1 ˝).

NORTHERN COUNTIES 4 ˝, MIDLOTHIAN 4 ˝
Foursomes: Kelsey MacDonald and Hannah McCook lost to Jane Turner and Rachael Watton 6 and 5; Cara Gruber and Pam Mackay lost to Claire Hargan and Wendy Nicholson 1 hole; Alison Bartlett and Jenny Milne bt Kirsten Blackwood and Claire MacDonald 1 hole (1-2).

Portumna beat Cahir Park in four-ball final

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Western District champions Portumna today emerged victorious over a gallant Cahir Park side in the Miele All-Ireland Ladies Inter-club Four-ball Finals at Mullingar Golf Club/
Having beaten Stackstown in the semi-finals of the tournament on Saturday, Portumna went on to secure, what was in the end, a convincing win over a luckless Cahir Park side.
The top match of the final saw the experienced Suzanne Corcoran, partnered by Mary Madden, score a fine 5 and 4 win against Cahir Park opponents Caithlin Fitzgerald and Catherine Costigan, to set the Western side on their way to victory.
Corcoran and Madden played solid golf throughout the day, with Madden’s putting being particularly impressive. The match got off to a tight start with the tie being all square after six holes. Portumna edged ahead at the turn and then went on to win the 10th, 11th, 12th with pars.
Corcoran produced a regulation par 5 at the short 14th to seal the first point of the final for the Western District champions.
Cahir Park looked as though they would even the points quickly, with the aunt and niece pairing of Helen O’Donoghue and Michelle Keating holding a commanding four-hole lead with six holes remaining.
However, Portumna battled back with Anita Carey and Annette Cahalan winning four of the next five holes to level the match with one hole remaining. Cahir Park eventually secured a much needed win through a par 5 from O’Donogue on the 18th.
Despite this defeat for Portumna they were declared the 2009 Miele Fourball All-Ireland Champions virtually seconds later when it emerged that Anne Cassidy and Audrey McGrath had beaten Susan Carey and Joanne Noonan by a 3 and 2margin in the third match.
Big-hitting McGrath, a former Irish international hockey player, played superb golf throughout the match to keep Portuma ahead during the afternoon as Cahir Park’s Joanne Noonan was frustrated by the tricky Mullingar greens, when she failed to seize opportunities to draw the southern side level.
The last match of the final again saw Cahir Park show their fighting spirit as the mother- daughter partnership of Marie and Emma Keating won the 12th and 13th to level their tie against Claire Callanan and Mary McElroy of Portumna.
The match remained all-square until the 15th when a halved match was agreed due to Portumna having secured two points , by a total of 8 holes, to put the tie out of reach for the Tipperary side.

Nicole is Austria's first winner on Ladies'

European Tour with a closing 67

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Nicole Gergely became Austria’s first winner on the Ladies European Tour when she claimed a two shot victory at the Randstad Open de France Dames today.
Gergely’s magnificent final round of five-under 67 equalled her career best and saw her finish on a total of 13-under-par at Le Golf D’Arras.
Gergely, who opened with rounds of 71, 67 and 70, finished two clear of Finland’s Ursula Wikstrom, who finished with 69.
“It’s awesome. I can’t believe it. It was always a dream,” said Gergely, 24, from Judenburg.
“I played so well this year. Today I thought, “Okay, I won’t put myself under pressure. I’ll just see whenever it comes, it comes. It’s really unexpected here; it’s unbelievable.”
Gergely started slowly when her ball landed in the water at the second resulting in a bogey, but that was her only mistake all day. She added six birdies, with three in a row from the fourth hole.
“I struggled a bit the first few. I had a bogey on the second when I went in the water and really stupid but then birdie on four, five really helped. I thought, okay, its going. I just hit it really good today except on 18 but that’s okay,” she said.
Her victory takes her to 13th on the Henderson Money List and earned her €45,000. She said she hoped to upstage the male professionals competing at the Austrian Open in her home country this weekend.
“I got a mail yesterday from Golf-Live.at, who always does the live scoring for us. Marcus Brier is playing in Austria and he was seventh. They said it would be really cool if you can win it and just put him in the shadow. I thought, “That’s some kind of pressure but why not.””
Gergely became the ninth first time winner on the LET this season and as a result, Austria is the 12th nation to have a representative in the winner’s circle this year.
Heather MacRae will remember Nicole Gergely because the Scot beat the Austrian at the first hole of a play-off for the British women's open amateur stroke-play title at Nairn in 2005.
Wikstrom is still searching for her breakthrough victory but was happy to hole a clutch par putt for outright second.
Wales’ Becky Brewerton signed off with a 70 and shared third place with the 2008 champion Anja Monke from Germany, who had a 71.
Brewerton had reached 12-under with a hole to play and was within a stroke of the leader when she found trouble at the 18th, resulting in a double bogey. After hitting her tee shot into the trees, she had to chip out and her third shot went just out of bounds. She was relieved to drain the 20-footer.
“It was a nice one to make because I think finishing with an eight would have been a bit of a disaster,” she said.
“I’m still fairly happy because it’s the best performance by far on this course. I haven’t played that hole well all week. I’ve been quite lucky to get away with a couple of other shots. I made a great five from there yesterday in practically the same position I was in today. If you don’t hit the fairway there it becomes a pretty difficult hole.
“Obviously I’m disappointed because I hit a couple of really poor shots but I made quite a nice putt in the end for a seven and probably saved myself quite a bit of money and some places. It all counts towards getting a bit closer to catching Diana Luna and Sophie and Catriona for the money list.” She is now ranked third on tour overall.
The third round leader, South African Lee-Anne Pace, led after seven holes but came unstuck on the back nine. She finished with a 74 and tied for fifth with England’s Felicity Johnson (67) on nine-under-par overall.

SCOTTISH COUNTY FINALS LAST DAY

Kelsey MacDonald injury blow to

Northern Counties' title hopes

Northern Counties' hopes of beating Midlothian in the title decider at the Scottish women's county team championship finals at Baberton Golf Club today received a body blow with an injury to Kelsey MacDonald, Scotland's Under-21 champion for the past two years.
The Stirling University student and Nairn Dunbar player, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency playing in the women's home internationals at Irvine, injured a wrist in playing out of rough during this morning's foursomes tie in which she was partnering Hannah McCook against Midlothian's Jane Turner and Rachael Watton.
The wrist quickly swelled up and the application of ice to it did not have an immediate effect. It was decided there was no way she could play in the afternoon singles and Northern Counties officials took her to a local hospital for an X-ray in case a bone had been broken.
Midlothian led 2-1 after the foursomes.
In the other match Renfrewshire took the foursomes 3-0 against Galloway.
FOURSOMES RESULTS
MIDLOTHIAN 2, NORTHERN COUNTIES 1
Jane Turner and Rachael Watton bt Kelsey MacDonald and Hannah McCook 6 and 5.
Claire Hargan and Wendy Nicholson bt Cara Gruber and Pam Mackay 1 hole.
Kirsten Blackwood and Claire MacDonald lost to Alison Bartlett and Jenny Milne 1 hole.
RENFREWSHIRE 3, GALLOWAY 0
Eilidh Briggs and Megan Briggs bt Gillian Monteith and Tracy Milligan 4 and 3.
Donna Jackson and Liz Stewart bt Christina Meldrum and Addi Shamash 2 and 1.

Gullane win East Lothian Junior League

By IAIN McLEAN
In the tightest finish for many years, Gullane Golf Club Juniors have emerged as 2009 victors in the highly competitive East Lothian Junior League.
As Musselburgh Old's matches with Dunbar and Royal Musselburgh on September 12 and 13 were both drawn , they missed winning the league title for the very first time by the narrowest of margins!
Many of their matches were decided on the last green, so it was a very close run finale for them, watched by their coach, Jane Connachan, and other supporters . Commiserations, therefore, are due to the Musselburgh Old team and to their convenor, Ruth Carroll, who steered her team to their highest finish.
Ruth now steps down as convenor and she leaves with the thanks of the league and other convenors for her commitment over the last few years.
The Gullane squad, which has already won the East Lothian Junior Winter League and Team Strokeplay titles year, is pictured above and comprises:
James Fisher, Michael Williams, Greg Houlston, Duncan McLean, Tom Grey, Alexander Wilson, Alasdair Good (pro) , Angus Elder, Lesley Atkins, Rory Grey (capt), Gordon Swan (junior convenor) and Peter Legget.
The following also played during the year - Stuart Gillies (vice-capt), Jamie Black, Callum Stephen, Graham Swan and Anthony Blaney.
There was a dead heat tie between Craigielaw and Tantallon (currently on tour in America with convenor Ric Foulner!) for second place. As their "goal difference" is exactly the same, second place was decided by the result of the league match between those two teams, which Craigielaw won.
Gullane and Craigielaw now qualify for the Scottish National Regional Final in the Home Nations Junior Team Golf Championship at Westerwood GC on Sunday, September 27,
Teams competing at Westerwood are Gullane, Craigielaw, Tillicoultry, Williamwood, Cardross, Deeside, Cathcart Castle, Prestonfield, Stonehaven and Pitreavie all representing their various junior leagues from around Scotland.

Kylie keeps cool and is on course to make it

to LPGA Final Qualifying School

Buchanan Castle's Kylie Walker is coping well with a heatwave in California and is within the "safety zone" with one round to play in the LPGA Tour School Sectional Qualifying Turnament at Mission Hills Country Club, Rancho Mirage.
The 23-year-old Scotland cap and 2010 Curtis Cup squad selection, runner-up in the recent European women's individual amateur championship in Sweden, has had rounds of 70, 71 and 75 for a level par aggregate of 216. She is lying joint 21st. The top 30 and ties after Sunday's fourth round will advance to the LPGA Tour School Final Qualifying Tournament at LPGA International, Daytona Beach, Florida from December 2 to 6.
Leading the field in California is US Curtis Cup player from 2008, Amanda Blumenherst from Scottsdale, Arizona. She is five shots clear of the field after firing a seven-under-par 65 in round three on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course. Amanda is on 14-under-par 202.
Her nearest rivals are Azahara Munoz from Spain, winner of the British women's open amateur championship at Harlech in June, and American Mallory Blackwelder. Azahara has scored 70, 66 and 71 for 207; Mallory 72, 68 and 67.
Blumenherst now looks to continue her solid play for one more day at Mission Hills Country Club.
“I played really solid golf today,” Blumenherst said. “I just hit it great all day. I also putted really, really well today too. I only mis-hit one iron shot all day, so if you do that, you’ll have a good, low score. I have to continue to play like I’m playing, and just not think about the score. I have just been trying my hardest on every hole.”
After a third-straight day of playing in triple-digit temperatures, Blumenherst said she doesn’t mind the heat wave. “I grew up in Arizona, so I am kind of used to it,” said Blumenherst, who had a stellar college career at Duke University and won the US women's amateur title last year.
The second LPGA Tour Sectional Qualifying Tournament will be Sept. 29-Oct. 2, 2009, at Plantation Golf and Country Club’s Bobcat and Panther Courses in Venice, Florida. The top-30 finishers and ties from the Venice qualifier will join the top-30 players and ties from this week’s sectional qualifier at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament.
Making up the rest of the field in Daytona Beach will be current LPGA Tour members attempting to improve their priority standing and eligible Duramed FUTURES Tour players who automatically advanced based on their position on the 2009 season-ending money list.
