Cheshire’s Charlotte Wild wins

English stroke-play championship

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Cheshire’s Charlotte Wild birdied the last hole to snatch victory in the English women’s open strokeplay championship at Enmore Park, Somerset.
She holed a curling 12-footer on the 18th for a one-under par round of 71and a final total of three-over. It broke a deadlock with her playing partner, Charlotte Ellis of Gloucestershire, and set Hertfordshire’s Hannah Burke the target of making eagle on the last to force a play-off.
Hannah tried hard, hitting the par five green in two – but when her putt missed the title belonged to Charlotte.
“This is so important to me,” said the 19-year-old from Mere. “I really wanted to win a big one this year. It doesn’t feel real at the moment but it’s very exciting.”
The last round was an intensely close contest between the players at the top of the leaderboard. After 54-holes Charlotte Ellis held a one-stroke lead on three-over par – and the chasing pack were breathing down her neck.
Four players were just one shot behind: Charlotte Wild, Monique Smit of South Africa, Hannah Barwood of Gloucestershire and Cori Lee of Lancashire.
Hannah Burke, who had been the halfway leader was a further stroke back.As the final round unfolded the players in contention battled relentlessly. Charlotte Wild birdied the first to take a share of the lead with her namesake – and it was neck-and-neck between the pair from then on.
They were briefly joined at the top of the leaderboard by Hannah Barwood, but her challenge ended with a wayward drive on the 11th. Charlotte Wild took the lead on her own after she parred the 11th, but Charlotte Ellis immediately caught her on the next.
Meanwhile, Hannah Burke and Cori Lee were constantly challenging and getting within a stroke of the lead. Hannah birdied two of the last three holes, but couldn’t quite close the gap. Charlotte Wild, who birdied the 18th in every round of the tournament, also won the U21 and U23 strokeplay titles.
Her county colleague Bronte Law won the U18 title. Bronte, 14, was the youngest competitor in the field. The U23 County Team Trophy was won by Gloucestershire for the second successive year, thanks to Charlotte Ellis and Hannah Barwood whose aggregate score in the first two rounds was 295.
The low score of the week was recorded in the final round when Hannah Grant, a member at Enmore Park, returned a three-under par 69.

Scotland fight back to finish

runners-up to England by

drawing with Wales

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Scotland regained their pride and their fighting spirit to finish runners-up to Stroyan Cup winners England on the last day of the girls’ home international golf matches at sunny Fairhaven Golf Club, Lancashire.
The Scots came from 2pt in arrears to snatch a 4 ½-4 ½ draw with Wales and so win the Swansea Spoon for finishing second.
"I'm thrilled to bits with the way Scotland played. England were the only team to beat us and we all agree they are different class this year," said Scotland captain Margaret MacNaughtan. "As we did against Ireland on the first day, we rallied from what could have been a losing position in the singles. Great stuff. I've enjoyed every minute of being here in Lancashire with the girls."
Kevin Craggs, the SLGA coach said," It was a good all-round performance. You have to remember most of the Scotland girls were new to international golf and it was a young team."
England were given their toughest match of the series by Ireland before beating them 6 ½-2 ½. LISA AND ALEXANDRA THE MVPs
The “Most Valuable Players” of the week were Ireland’s 14-year-old Lisa Maguire and England’s Alexandra Peters. Both won five times and lost one in their six outings.
Scotland’s top points achievers were Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) and Rachael Watton (Mortonhall), both with 4pt out of six. Ironically, both lost their final ties against Wales.
After the Wales v Scotland foursomes were shared 1 ½-1 ½, Wales claimed victory in the first two singles to finish. Amy Boulden beat Eilidh Briggs by 3 and 1 and Gemma Bradbury beat Rachael Watton 4 and 3.
The Scots’ rally began with a one-hole win by Alyson McKechin over Kelly Miller.

Sammy Leslie’s 3 and 1 win for Scotland over Chloe Williams levelled the overall scoreline at 3 ½ pt each.
Katie Bradbury put Wales back in front by beating Rachael Taylor by one hole.
Scotland, trailing by one with one tie to finish, got the levelling point with a 2 and 1 win by their champion from Peebles, Ailsa Bain, over Natasha Gobey. Bain was never behind in a match in which she was three up after nine holes.

Hertfordshire’s Hannah Burke leads English

stroke-play championship

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Hertfordshire’s Hannah Burke shot two-under par 70 today to take the halfway lead in the English women’s open strokeplay championship at Enmore Park, Somerset.
Hannah is level for the first 36 holes of the championship and one shot ahead of Lancashire’s Cori Lee, who also beat par with a second round 71. They lead a total of 36 players into the final day’s play after the cut was made on 158, 14-over par. Better weather on the second day of the championship – with plenty of sunshine and no wind – encouraged good scoring, although the course continued to play long. Gloucestershire’s Charlotte Ellis, who shared the lead after the first round, is currently third.
The other overnight leaders, Charlotte Dalton of Warwickshire and Monique Smit of South Africa, are both well placed, sharing sixth place.
Other players at the top end of the leaderboard include 2008 English champion Hannah Barwood of Gloucestershire and the Cheshire pair, Charlotte Wild and 14-year-old Bronte Law. Meanwhile the host club’s Hannah Grant qualified comfortably in 12th place. Hannah Burke began her move with birdies on the second and third holes.
“That was a good start and then I was steady for the rest of the round. I kept going, trying to par everything and I holed a couple of good putts.”
Hannah, who finished her round with two birdies in the last three holes, is coming to the end of her summer in England and in two week’s time will return to Baylor University in Texas.
Her successful college golf has helped hone her strokeplay skills and she tied for the Irish open strokeplay championship, losing only after a seven-hole sudden death play-off. She also led pre-qualifying for the Ricoh Women’s British Open.

Proud Scots humbled by England 8-1

after 6-0 whitewash in singles

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Scotland’s Under-18 girls team have tasted the highs and the lows of golf on consecutive days at the girls' home international matches for the Stroyan Cup at Fairhaven Golf Club.
Quite rightly proud of their come-from-behind 5-4 win over European champions Ireland on Tuesday, the Scots were humbled 8-1 by England today on a very hot day at the Lancashire venue.
England, the defending champions, are currently different class at this age level and when it is eight-a-side – or they certainly have looked it this week. They simply have more good players than any of the other countries.
On Tuesday, they slaughtered Wales 8-1 and 24 hours later they did the same to the Scots team who are no duffers by any means. Several of the Under-18 Scots will graduate to the adult line-up in the not too distant future.
England had to settle for a 2-1 lead from the foursomes when Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) and Rachael Watton (Mortonhall) won their alternate shot tie by two holes over Holly Clyburn and Alexandra Peters.
Holly is the new England girls champion and Alexandra is the Fairhaven women's course record holder, having won the Fairhaven Junior Open girls' title for the past two years. So that was a great win by Eilidh and Rachael.
But it was to prove the sole crumb of comfort.
England whitewashed the Scots 6-0 in the singles with defeats for Germany-based Rachael Taylor (3 and 2 by Holly Clyburn), Sammy Leslie (4 and 2 by Kelly Tidy), Rachael Watton, failing to win for the first time in four outings as she went down by 5 and 4 to Nikki Foster, Eilidh Briggs (3 and 2 by Hannah Turland), Alyson McKechin (2 and 1 by Heidi Baek) and Lesley Atkins (5 and 4 by Alexandra Peters).
Ireland came from 4-2 down to beat luckless Wales 5-4 but, even with the brilliance of the 14-year-old Maguire twins giving them a chance of securing three points – one in the foursomes and two in the singles – it is almost impossible to see them beating England in their last match.
Scotland finish by playing Wales – and, judging by the way the Welsh played against the Irish, it could be a close one.

Day 2 of Girls Home Internationals at Fairhaven

Eilidh and Rachael keep Scotland's hopes

alive by winning foursome v England

Scotland's final foursomes pairing of Eilidh Briggs and Rachael Watton kept alive hopes going into the afternoon singles by beating England's Holly Clyburn and Alexandra Peters by two holes on a hot and sunny Day 2 of the Girls Home Internationals at Fairhaven Golf Club, Lancashire.
That cut the England lunchtime lead to 2-1, instead of the 3-0 advantage they established over Wales in Tuesday's foursomes.
Wales bounced back from their 8-1 defeat by England to take a 2-1 lead from the foursomes against Ireland.
HOW WALES TOOK A 2-1 LEAD OVER IRELAND
Katie Bradbury and Chelsey Herbert scored a notable win for Wales over the Vagliano Trophy pairing of Lisa and Leona Maguire.
The Irish twins were expected to win but, in fact, their Welsh opponents were never behind in an absorbing contest.
Bradbury and Herbert went three up aftere eight holes with successes at the fifth, seventh and eighth holes. The Maguire girls came back strongly to square the match at the 14th but they were held at bay over the 15th, 16th and 17th holes before Bradebury and Herbert birdied the long last hole for a one-hole victory.
Wales went 2-0 with a 2 and 1 win by Amy Boulden and Gemma Bradbury over Carla Reynolds and Patrice Delaney. Here again the Welsh pair were never behind after surging three holes up by the seventh tee. Reynolds and Delaney came back into it with successes at the 10th and 12th but the Welsh pair were either two or one hole to the good over the closing holes and a par 3 at the 17th clinched a 2 and 1 win for Boulden and Bradbury.
Ireland got a point on the board with a 3 and 1 win in the final foursomes by Laura McCarthy and Emma O’Driscoll over Chloe Williams and Natasha Gobey. After an early exchange of holes, the Irish pair went two up by winning the eighth and ninth.
That was the decisive move of the match. The Welsh pair got their deficit back to one hole by winning the 12th but it was so far and no further. McCarthy and O’Driscoll won the 17th to finish the match.
HOW ENGLAND TOOK A 2-1 LEAD OVER SCOTLAND
England’s Heidi Baek and Kelly Tidy won the sixth, seventh and eighth to go three up on Scotland’s Ailsa Bain and Sammy Leslie before winning the top foursomes tie in the second match by 3 and 2.
That lead stretched for four holes at the 11th. The Scots won back the 12th and 13th but Baek and Tidy won the 14th to go three up again with four to play. Halves at the 15th and 16th ended the contest in England’s favour.
England went 2-0 with a 2 and 1 victory by Hannah Turland and Hayley Davis over Sammy Vass and Rachael Taylor, neither of whom figured in Scotland’s first-day win over Ireland.
Turland and Davis had the edge early on but the Scots got their act together to win four holes in a row from the four and were still two up at the turn. England squared matters by winning the 10th and 11th.. After three halves in a row, England made the winning move by capturing the 15th and 16th and then halving the 17th for a 2 and 1 win.
Scotland needed a point to keep their afternoon hopes alive and they got it from the final pairing of Eilidh Briggs and Rachael Watton. They won by two holes over Holly Clyburn and Alexandra Peters.
It was a ding-dong struggle for most of the way with neither side able to go more than one hole up. Then Briggs and Watton, who had gone one up for a second time by winning the 12th, doubled their advrange with a birdied 4 at the long 16th to be two up with two to play.
Clyburn and Peters hit back by winning the short 17th but the Scots won the last hole for a two-hole victory.

Three share lead in English women's

stroke-play at Enmore Park

NBWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Three players share the lead on one-over par after the wet and windy first day of the English women’s open strokeplay championship at Enmore Park, Somerset.
Home players, Charlotte Ellis of Gloucestershire and Charlotte Dalton of Warwickshire, are joined at the top of the leaderboard by Monique Smit of South Africa.
Monique, 18, is spending eight weeks playing golf in Britain and is taking advantage of the new, open status of this championship.
She’s a plus-one player who intends to turn professional and who already has a host of titles to her name. “Back home it’s winter and our season has basically died down so I’ve come here and I’m really enjoying it. It’s a shame about the weather – but, hey, it’s the same for everyone out there,” she said.
“I was pleased with my round today. The course is playing hard and long and it’s very wet. It’s all about staying patient and pacing yourself and I did that pretty well,” added Monique, who had two birdies in the last three holes.
Charlotte Dalton, who was one of the early starters, set an unbeatable target with her steady round. She had two birdies and three bogeys on her card and she scored one-over on the front nine, level par on the back.
“I was chuffed with that,” she said. “I’ve struggled a bit over the past few weeks to put a score together, so I was very pleased. My putting was better and it’s nice to be back on track.” Charlotte Ellis, meanwhile, staged a remarkable recovery after she reached the turn at five-over par, which included three double bogeys.
“I didn’t play badly, I just had a couple of drives which I drew too much above the trees and which were pushed out of bounds by the wind. “I did make one bad swing and put my ball in the water on the 7th but the rest of the round was going all right. I was disappointed to be five-over at the ninth and felt I should be one-over or level par, so I kept plugging away and the putts started dropping.”
Charlotte, a past English mid-amateur champion, had five birdies on the back nine, including a consecutive run on the last three holes.
The trio are a stroke ahead of a group of four players which includes the 2008 English champion, Hannah Barwood of Gloucestershire.
The Somerset challenge is led by Hannah Grant, who is playing on her own course, and shares ninth place on four over par. After the second round the top 36 players and ties will go forward to the final 36 holes on Thursday.
Leading scores
73 Charlotte Dalton (Ladbrook Park), Charlotte Ellis (Minchinhampton), Monique Smit (Oubaai).

The Catriona Factor inspires Scots girls

to come-from-behind win over Ireland

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
“The Catriona Matthew inspiration is working already,” said a cock-a-hoop captain Margaret MacNaughtan after Scotland toppled European champions Ireland on the opening day of the Under-18 gitrls’ home international matches at Fairhaven Golf Club, Lancashire today
Very much the underdogs against an Irish team that won the Euro girls team title only four weeks ago and includes two Vagliano Trophy team players in the 14-year-old Maguire twins, Scotland rallied from 3-1 down to win 5-4.
That sets the scene for a Day 2 summit meeting – Scotland versus defending champions England.
The English walloped Wales 8-1 in their opening tie.
“I’ve never seen a Scotland girls team so animated since they went to Royal Lytham to see Catriona winning the Women’s British Open and meeting her afterwards. And I’m quite certain that some of Catriona’s magic rubbed off on our girls,” said Mrs MacNaughtan, who played for Scotland … at hockey.
“To beat Ireland was a simply fantastic performance. I don’t want to single any players out for special mention because I’ve been stressing since we got here that this is a team championship – and everybody has a role to play in the team effort.
“And that was some team effort against Ireland.”
The Scots, 2-1 down from the morning foursomes, saw that deficit stretchto two points when Lisa Maguire produced some brilliant golf to beat Alyson McKechin (Eldereslie) 7 and 6. Lisa was six up at the turn and birdied the first, fourth, sixth and 10th She was roughly four under par for the holes played.
Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) started the afternoon ball rolling for Scotland when she put a second team point on the board by beating Sara Helly 4 and 3. Helly was one up at the turn but the initiative in what had been a tight match was seized by Briggs who won three holes in a row, the 13th, 14th and 15th , for victory
Rachael Watton put Scotland on level terms at 3-3 overall with a tremendous 2 and 1 win over Leona Maguire. The tone for a quality match was set when the first hole was halved in birdie 4s. Watton took the lead at the second and was never in arrears after that.
Maguire won the third but the Scot then won the fourth, fifth and eighth to take a three-hole lead. Briggs lost the 10th but went back to three up with a birdie 3 at the 12th. In a ding-dong finish Maguire birdied the 15th and 16th to cut her deficit to one but Briggs won the 17th and the match with a par.
Scotland moved into a 4-3 lead when their new champion, Ailsa Bain (Peebles) beat her Irish counterpart Emma O’Driscoll by one hole after being two down at the turn. Bain won the 10th, the 11th with a birdie and then the 12th to lead for the first time.
O’Driscoll squared the contest again at the 14th but Bain’s par 3 at the 17th put her back in the lead and the last hole was halved.
Ireland drew level at 4-4 when Carla Reynolds, who had been three up after three holes, bt Lesley Atkins (Minto) by 3 and 2 after the Scot had cut her deficit to one hole with a birdie at the 11th. Reynolds won the 12th, 13th and 14th to go four up. Atkins won the 15th but a half at the 16th ended the match in Ireland’s favour.
And so everything hinged on the last of the six singles – Sammy Lesie for Scotland and Patrice Delaney for Ireland.
After losing the first hole, Leslie, from Westhill, Aberdeen, won the next four in a row for a three-hole advantage which was cut to one when Delaney won the seventh and eighth.
A birdie by the Scot at the ninth put her two up again and a par at the 13th was good enough to re-establish Leslie’s three-hole lead and a half in bogey 6s at the 15th meant that neither Sammy nor Scotland could be beaten. But she won the 16th for a great 4 and 2 win under pressure to give Scotland the 5-4 victory they could hardly have hoped for at the start of the week.
HOW ENGLAND BEAT WALES 8-1
England, after making a 3-0 clean sweep of the morning foursomes, won five of the afternoon’s singles against Wales for whom Chloe Williams was their only winner.
Although it was a lopsided team scoreline in the end, the top two singles both went to the last green.
England’s girls champion Holly Clyburn beat Natasha Gobey by two holes after being one up at the turn but was pulled back to square by a birdie from her Welsh opponent at the 14th. Clyburn won the 16th with a par at the 18th with a birdie 4 to clinch victory.
Kelly Tidy was two down after five holes against Amy Boulden of Wales and did not take the lead until the 14th . Like Clyburn, Tidy birdied the last for a two-hole win.
Young newcomer Lauren Taylor had a good 4 and 3 win over Gemma Bradbury, surging into a four-hole lead by the sixth tee. Gemma could not make significant inroads on that lead.
Nikki Foster beat Katie Bradbury by 2 and 1 after the Welsh girl had the better of the outward nine holes. Nikki never looked back after squaring the match at the 11th hole. She went ahead for the first time with a birdie 3 at the 13th and also won the 14th and 15th with pars before losing the 16th to a 5.
Chloe Williams chalked up Wales’ solitary victory by beating Hayley Davis 4 and 3. Davis won the first hole with a birdie 4 but was three down by the turn, with the Welsh player’s successes including birdies at the fourth and ninth. There was nothing to choose between the players after the turn until Williams won the 15th for victory.
England’s biggest winner was young Alexandra Peters who won by 8 and 7 against Emma Davies. Alexandra, with the help of birdies at the second and ninth, was seven up at the turn. the Scot could not lose but she made sure by winning the 16th for a 4 and 2 victory which gave Scotland a famous 5-4 victory.

Edinburgh girl Rachael Watton a busy

bee on the international front

FROM THE SCOTSMAN.SPORT WEBSITE
By ELSPETH BURNSIDE
FOR most youngsters, the school holidays are a time for rest and relaxation. For Edinburgh golfer Rachael Watton, the next couple of weeks will be packed with the pressure of international competition.
After watching North Berwick's Catriona Matthew lift the British Open title at Royal Lytham & St Anne's, the Mortonhall member was today making her debut at the Girls' Home Internationals at Fairhaven in Lancashire.Next week, she faces double duty at the British Girls' Championship at nearby West Lancs Golf Club. Not only will she be chasing individual honours but she has also been appointed captain of a three-strong Scottish line-up alongside Eilidh Briggs (Kilmalcolm) and Lesley Atkins (Minto) chasing the coveted team trophy.Later in the month, 17-year-old Watton will then carry Scotland's colours overseas at the Belgium Junior International.

"I made my Scottish girls' debut at the European Girls' Championship in Finland last month, and now I'm really looking forward to the Home Internationals," said Watton. "I've recently reduced my handicap to two, and it's great to be playing for Scotland in so many tournaments."

Watton, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, who is set to enter her sixth and final year at Firrhill High School, has already shown promise at senior level. Last month, she was the star performer in helping Midlothian win the East Division inter-county team championship at Falkirk.

In the side for the first time, the teenager won all six of her matches and was voted player of the tournament.
She was also the top stroke-play qualifier at the Scottish Girls' Championship at Lanark, and reached the semi-finals of the match-play before losing to eventual winner, Ailsa Bain (Peebles).
Watton caught the golfing bug when she accompanied her father and older sister to practice sessions at the Braid Hills Driving Range and, aged 11, she then joined Baberton Golf Club. She then switched to Mortonhall and has also recently gained membership at Gullane, where she looks forward to honing her links skills on wild, windy days.
A member of the National B squad, she appreciates the input from the Scottish Ladies' Golfing Association.
"We have great winter training weekends with coach Kevin Craggs," she said. "For instance, last year we had a weekend at an Army assault course near Carnoustie, that was great fun."
Her personal coach is Spencer Henderson and the future certainly looks bright on the golfing front for the Capital youngster."
I'm going back to school, but sixth year is going to be a chance to fit in a lot of golf," said Watton, who is waiting for her Higher results.
"I'm hoping to study architecture at either Dundee or Glasgow, but want to keep playing golf when I'm at university. I really do want to see how far I can go in the game.
"Turning professional could be an option, but it's far too early to decide. I'll see where it goes."

SCOTS HOPE CATRIONA’S WIN WILL

INSPIRE GIRLS AT FAIRHAVEN

Scotland team officials are hoping that Catriona Matthew’s historic victory at neighbouring Royal Lytham on Sunday will inspire her Under-18 compatriots to win the girls’ home international matches over the next three days.
The Scottish youngsters were given a break from practice on Sunday by captain Margaret MacNaughtan (Aberdeen Ladies) and manager Karen Marshall (Baberton) so that they could cheer on Catriona in the closing stages of her Ricoh Women’s British Open triumph and were thrilled to see her win.
It’s the Scots teenagers’ bad luck that they don’t have a warm-up match before they are the first to face the favourites, Ireland, while defending champions England play Wales..
Ireland are the only one of the four countries who have never won the Stroyan Cup since the girls’ tournament began in 1966.
But, paradoxically, the Irish start favourites this week because they won the European girls’ team championship in Finland, also for the first time, at the beginning of July.
The Ireland line-up includes the 14-year-old identical twins Lisa and Leona Maguire whose level of skill is way above the norm for that age, so much so that they both played for Great Britain & Ireland in the Vagliano Trophy women’s international match against the Continent of Europe in Hamburg a couple of weeks ago.
England are defending the title they won over three very wet days at Panmure Golf Club, near Carnoustie last year.
Scotland were bidding to complete a hat-trick of Stroyan Cup triumphs last year when they finished third behind champions England and runners-up Ireland.
Fairhaven, an Open championship qualifying venue, has probably the toughest start and the toughest finish at any course they have ever played – three of the first four holes from the LGU tees are par-5s and three of the last four holes are par-5s.

Scotland team is;
Lesley Atkins (Minto), Ailsa Bain (Peebles), Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm), Sammy Leslie (Westhill), Alyson McKechin (Elderslie), Rachael Taylor (Bad Griesbach), Sammy Vass (Tain), Rachael Watton (Mortonhall).

TUESDAY FOURSOMES PAIRINGS

SCOTLAND v. IRELAND
Ailsa Bain & Sammy Leslie v Leona & Lisa Maguire.
Lesley Atkins & Alyson McKechin v Patrice Delaney & Paula Reynolds
Eilidh Briggs & Rachael Watton v Laura McCarthy & Emma O'Driscoll.

ENGLAND v WALES
Kelly Tidy & Heidi Baek v Chloe Williams & Natasha Gobey.
Hayley Davis & Hannah Turland v Gemma & Katie Bradbury.

Jenny Suh scores first Futures Tour win

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE DURAMED FUTURES TOUR
Jenny Suh of Fairfax, Virginia claimed her first Tour victory today in the $100,000 Alliance Bank Golf Classic. Suh (68) won in a playoff with Seo-Jae Lee of Seoul, South Korea, after both ended regulation tied at 12-under-par (201).
"It feels great," said Suh, who recorded 12 top-10 finishes in collegiate competition, including three wins, while at the University of Alabama. "When we were coming down the stretch, things got a little bit rocky for me. I had to make a few par saves. But the whole time, I was just very happy to be in contention."
Suh came into the final round sharing the lead with Lee (68). During the one-hole playoff on No. 18, Lee overshot the green, which resulted in a bogey. But even then, Suh didn't breathe any easier, because she knew it wasn’t over.
"I'm thinking, the girl's an incredible putter," said Suh, a member of the victorious 2006 U.S. Curtis Cup team at Bandon Dunes. "So it's not over. It's like match-play when you play in a play-off. You've just got to expect your opponent to hit every shot, no matter if it's a chip or fairway shot. Seo-Jae made a lot of great putts today."
Suh says it was also like match-play during regulation at Drumlins Country Club, East Course, as she and Lee, playing together in the final pairing, traded birdies and pars.
"I just kept shooting for the pins," said Suh. "Luckily it was raining, so that was to our benefit. We could stick balls close to the hole. I thought, 'You've got nothing to lose. What's the point of being a wimp today?'"
Rainy weather conditions dominated the tournament weekend, with Tour officials issuing delays twice; a 4hr 45min delay on Friday and a 2hr delay this morning prior to the completion of the second round.
Immediately after winning, Suh called her parents to let them know of her first professional win.
"I said in Korean, 'Mom, I won,'" recalled Suh. "She sighed and asked if I hadn't played well. So I said again, 'Mom, I won!' Then she got excited. I don't think it's sunk in for me yet."
Whitney Wade (66) of Glasgow, Kentucky, finished third with a final score of 202 (-11).
"I put myself into position," said Wade, winner of The Duramed Championship earlier this year in Mason, Ohio. "That's all I can ask for. I birdied the last hole, so that helps me know I can make birdies in the end."
Sharing a tie for fourth are Caroline Larsson (67) of Stockholm, Sweden, last year's Syracuse winner Kim Welch (68) of Sacramento, Calif., and Angela Buzminski (71) of Oshawa, Ontario.
"I was really close to making a hole-in-one today on No. 8," said Larsson, who was a contestant in The Golf Channel's "Big Break Prince Edward Island" series. "I hit it to the right side and I knew it was going to come back. It got to not even a foot short on the left. It must have rolled right over the cup. I used an Alliance Bank golf ball today, so I think that helped!"
With her win, Suh moves up from 56th to 15th on the Duramed FUTURES Tour money list. Jean Reynolds of Newnan, Ga., remains in first place, with Misun Cho of Cheongju, South Korea, ranked second, and Mina Harigae of Monterey, Calif., in third. Wade moves from fifth to fourth, as Samantha Richdale of Kelowna, British Columbia, moves down one spot to fifth.
Lori Atsedes of Ithaca, N.Y., claimed a Duramed FUTURES Tour record, by surpassing Marilyn Lovander of Gainesville, Fla., to become the new career money leader.
Coming into the Alliance Bank Golf Classic, Atsedes only needed $83 to take over the record. Atsedes now leads Lovander by $469.
Next stop for the Duramed FUTURES Tour is the Falls Auto Group Classic in London, Kentucky, August 7-9.

Catriona Matthew with the Scotland team who will be playing in the girls' home internationals at Fairhaven Golf Club this coming week (image by Gillian Kirkwood; click on it to enlarge).

Great Scot! That's Catriona as she wins the Ricoh
Women's British Open by three strokes
FROM THE TELEGRAPH.CO.UK WEBSITE
By MARK REASON
It was the mother of all victories. Eleven weeks after giving birth to her second daughter, Catriona Matthew became the first Scot to win a women's major golf championship.
Her three-stroke triumph over Karrie Webb in the Ricoh Women's British Open earns Matthew the title of super-mega mum. From now on maternity leave is for wimps.
She said afterwards: "I had a tear in my eye coming up the last and had to hold myself together for the last two putts. The British Open is the biggest one for me. You do wonder if your chances are running out."
It had not been a great year for British sport after the heroics of the 2008 Olympics, but late summer now seems to be turning golden. First of all there was young Tom Daley diving into history, then the cricket team removed Australia's aura, now Matthew has done it for mums around the world.
Asked how long the recent birth had taken, Matthew said: "I had four hours of labour, too speedy for an epidural which was a bad thing."
So she's not even on drugs, then. Matthew added: "Thirty-nine sounds old, but I don't feel old. The difficult bit will be when Katy [the elder daughter] starts school. But this has certainly spurred me on to play for another few years."
The margin of Matthew's victory implies a stroll round the links of Lytham, but for much of the round she was a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Her rhythm was ragged and shortly after the turn, Matthew had been caught by Ai Miyazato of Japan.
Matthew's second shot into the 10th looked like the swing of a broken golfer. She spooned the ball into a gorse bush 10 yards to the right of the green. After taking a penalty drop the Scot salvaged a bogey with the most important putt of her career.
From that moment on she could scarcely miss, at least with the putter. How accustomed are we to Americans holing everything on the final day? Last month Stewart Cink rolled in a putt on Turnberry's final green just before Lee Westwood three-putted.
How often have we seen that movie before? Even Matthew has played the fall-girl in that closing scene. Three years ago she three-putted the final green of the Kraft Nabisco, when two putts would have got the Scot into the play-off. Perhaps Britain's fortunes are now finally turning.
Matthew holed crucial putts on the 12th and 13th and then she rolled in a huge putt from the front of the 14th green.
"I thought then, this is mine for the taking – I'm never going to have a better chance so let's take it," she said.
When did we last hear such words and see such deeds from a Brit?
It is incredible to think that just over a week ago Matthew was running for her life when the hotel she was staying in caught fire. At first she thought the drumming sound was rain hitting the balcony. When husband Graeme came in from outside and asked what she was talking about, they peered out of the door and saw the corridor ablaze.
On the way out Graeme burned his feet and was unable to caddie for his wife last week. But he was back on the bag at Lytham, an astonished witness in the second round when Matthew followed up an eagle with a hole-in-one. That prompted the best line of the championship when American Solheim Cup captain Beth Daniel said: "Beanie's on fire out there – oh no, that was last week."
The less generous may reprise Hale Irwin's ungracious line about a young Seve in 1979 and dub Matthew the 'Car Park Champion'. She was that wild at times and she had her share of luck. But in the end Matthew kept her head when everyone about her was losing theirs.
It can fairly be said that the challenge to Matthew was pitiful at the end – but frankly who cares? When Matthew holed her par putt on the 16th green there was a ghost of Tom Watson about the smile – same colouring, same slightly craggy, wind-swept self deprecation.
A fortnight ago Watson missed history by an inch as veterans wiped the water from their eyes. This evening, as Matthew touched in one of the shortest putts to ever win a championship, there were only tears of joy.

Georgia Hall leads all the way to win English Under-13 girls' title

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Dorset’s Georgia Hall led from start to finish to win the English girls’ U13 championship by two shots at The Wiltshire.
“It’s amazing,” said the 13-year-old from Ferndown. “It’s a relief as well! I came here really wanting to win and I thought I had a good chance after coming third last year.”
Georgia led by five shots after the first day, when she shot level par 72. After the second round she was still four ahead of her closest challenger, Wiltshire’s Kyra Horlock, and six clear of Charley Hull, the defending champion.
Charley did her best to whittle away the deficit with a final round 77 - the low score of the day. However, she couldn’t catch Georgia, although she did move into second place ahead of Kyra.
“I wasn’t very nervous because having a four-shot lead gives you a bit of leeway, but when I started adding up the scores at the end I was getting a bit worried,” said Georgia, who returned a final round 81.
“Charley was playing in front of me and I could see she was quite confident.”
However, Georgia herself played steadily, with just one double bogey on a windy day – and a confidence-boosting birdie on the short 16th. Georgia, who plays off two, is a Dorset county player and was runner-up in the South West girls’ championship and a semi-finalist in the South West ladies’ championship. She set the Ferndown course record of five-under 67 when she was 12.
Her next target is the British girls’ championship in August.

Elizabeth Mallett wins English Under-15 girls' title

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Warwickshire’s Elizabeth Mallett came from two shots behind to win the English girls’ U15 championship at The Wiltshire.
“I can’t believe it, it’s wonderful,” she said after she returned a final round 78 in tricky winds to overtake three other players and claim the trophy. The championship was disrupted by heavy rain and reduced to 54 holes but it produced excellent golf and a tightly contested competition. In the end, the first five players were separated by just two shots.
Wiltshire’s girl international Hannah Turland and Lancashire’s Emily Taylor, were a stroke behind the winner, and just ahead of first round leader Bronte Law of Cheshire and Warwickshire’s Ashley Cramond.
Elizabeth, 15, was among the players who had to return to the course at 8am to finish their second round. She had five holes to complete and bogeyed each of them and remarked: “I thought: Oh, dear!
"But later on I found out that I was only two shots off the lead and I felt a bit better about it.
“Then I heard that lots of players were bunched together and that it was anyone’s for the taking. Two shots over 18 holes is nothing in these windy conditions.”
She quickly staked her claim, reaching the turn in one-over par. Although she dropped some shots on the way in she handled the conditions well.
“It was really blowing across the course in a tricky direction and the putting was quite difficult.” This is Elizabeth’s second national title, following her win in the 2007 English schools U16 championship – just before her 13th birthday. It’s part of an impressive record which includes two second places in the English girls’ U13 championship and third place in last year’s U15s. She’s a Warwickshire county player and has helped her team to reach this year’s final of the English counties championship.
Hannah Turland was the other big mover in the final round with the best score of the day. She had a two-over par 74 to push up the leaderboard from sixth place.

Holly Clyburn wins English

girls’ championship

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Lincolnshire’s Holly Clyburn produced sparkling golf in heavy rain and wind to beat Lancashire’s Kelly Tidy 4 and 3 and win the FirstPoint USA English girls’ championship at North Wilts.
Holly who adds this title to the French U18 open championship which she won earlier in the season. This was her last opportunity to take the title before she leaves junior ranks and she came with the firm intention of winning.
“I was determined to do it – right from the start,” said Holly, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency.
Meanwhile, Yorkshire’s Charlotte Austwick won the second flight trophy after a marathon battle which ended on the 20th. “I’m ecstatic,” she said.
The finals were played in the most unpleasant conditions. The players teed off in rain which, by the time Holly and Kelly reached the third hole, had worsened into a downpour, driving across the course.
“It was horrendous,” said Holly, who had a complete change of waterproofs during play and was ably assisted by her caddy, county colleague Jessica Schiele.
Kelly, meanwhile, relied on the help of fellow girl international Heidi Baek. Despite the weather the players halved the first with birdies before Kelly won the second to take the early advantage. Then, as the weather worsened, Holly produced a string of successful up-and-downs which helped her to square the match and move ahead to three up after eight. She three-putted the ninth to lose the hole and on the 11th looked in danger of doing the same after her first putt slid across the wet surface and finished about 12ft past the hole.
However, she bravely holed the return while Kelly’s shortish putt for a half hit the hole and lipped out. Holly won the 12th with a textbook birdie to go to four up, but lost the short 13th where both players struggled around the green.
The 14th was halved before the short 15th proved the decider. Kelly’s tee shot looked good but took one bounce into thick rough behind the green and she did extremely well to hack out on to the putting surface.
Holly’s drive finished just off the fringe to the right of the hole and, when she chipped stiff, the hole and the championship were hers.
“I had my short game with me today,” said Holly. “I knew I could rely on it.”Next week the two players will be on the same side in England’s team at the girls’ international matches at Fairhaven, Lancashire.
Meanwhile, Yorkshire second team player Charlotte Austwick staged an impressive fightback to win the second flight final. Her opponent, Tiffany Hewetson of Sussex, was never behind during the match and was two up with three to play.
Charlotte won the 16th and 18th to take the match into extra time and secured the win on the 20th, where the difficult, steeply tiered green ruined Tiffany’s hopes.“I hadn’t won the second hole all week,” said Charlotte, 17, who was also playing in the championship for the last time.
