Four Aberdeenshire golfing girls who have plenty to smile about - they have all won their home clubs' WOMEN'S championships this season. Hot scoring by Sophie, Kelly

in Oldmeldrum heat-wave

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
The scoring - very hot, indeed - matched the weather at Oldmeldrum Golf Club for today's Aberdeenshire girls' medal competition.
There were two net 66s over the 5,203yd ladies' course which hs a par of 71 (36-35) and a Standard Scratch of 72.
Deeside's Sophie Alexander headed the scratch returns with a fine round of 73 (39-34) which, off a handicap of seven, gave her a net 66. Sophie's handicap has recently gone up from six to seven. Once we get the CSS worked out for today - organiser Ethel Farquharson is basking in the Spanish sunshine at Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort until next Tuesday - then we can be fairly confident that Sophie's handicap will come back down again.
The other net 66 was returned by 16-year-old Oldmeldrum girl Kelly Guthrie, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency. The remarkable feature about Kelly is that (a) she did not take up golf until last year, (b) she has cut her handicap from 30 to 16 this season, and (c) she was making her debut on the Aberdeenshire girls' competition circuit.
Kelly is almost self-taught apart from "two or three lessons from Hamish Love," the Oldmeldrum club pro.
She almost drove the first green - some 205 yards away, all uphill - and started with a gross birdie 3. Her halves were 40 and 42. Even without knowing what the CSS, we can confidently predict that Kelly Guthrie's handicap is coming down again
But what a prospect for Aberdeenshire girls to "discover" out of the blue.

No Scots beat 36-hole cut

in SAS Ladies Masters

None of the five Scottish entries survived the 36-hole cut in the three-round SAS Ladies Masters at Larvik Golf Club, Norway. In fact they did not get near the cut figure of 145 (one under par), one of the lowest on the Ladies European Tour this season.
FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Italian Veronica Zorzi shot a five-under 68 to take a two stroke lead over Lisa Holm Sorensen heading into the final round.
The two-time French Open winner scored a two-round total of 12-under after a tougher second day at Larvik Golfklubb in Larvik, Norway.
She made short work of the par fives, having eagled one of the seven – the ninth – with three straight birdies on the last three. She had another birdie at the par-four 14th but bogeyed the par-three eighth
hole.
Zorzi is 34th on the Ladies European Tour’s Henderson Money List after five events played this year and was thrilled to be in contention for her first title in three years." I just stayed patient and hit the fairways and greens and made some putts," Zorzi said. " The putting was good. I can read the lines pretty well so I am feeling comfortable. You need to have patience because on this course there are so many par fives; you can make birdies if you have one bad hole."
After a parade of 11 birdies for a dazzling 62 on Friday, Denmark’s Lisa Holm Sorensen signed for a 74 to finish on 10-under in second place. Sorensen played her round in the windiest conditions on Friday afternoon but remained in contention for her second LET title." It was tough out there today," said Sorensen." It was very windy and a big difference from yesterday." Last week’s AIB Ladies Irish Open winner Diana Luna carded a 70 after an opening 67 and was placed third at nine-under.
" It was very bizarre because I started very badly," she said." I started with three bogeys in four holes so I wasn’t playing very well at the beginning. This morning at the range I was quite tired but I think I coped pretty well after that. I fought hard and finished with three birdies. I’m very happy because I stayed calm. I told myself that this is a course where you can have lots of birdies so keep it going and do not stress too much because the back nine is better than the first nine."
Laura Cabanillas of Spain (68) was fourth on eight under, with seven-players a stroke back in a tie for fifth position.
They included Norwegian Marianne Skarpnord, who stayed in the reckoning after rounds of 70 and 69, French players Sophie Giquel and Cassandra Kirkland along with the English quartet of Rebecca Hudson, Trish Johnson, Melissa Reid and Samantha Head.
Skarpnord said:" It was a good finish with birdies on each of the final three par fives. The course is playing very short but you still have to hit the shots and make the birdies. I feel like minus seven for two rounds should have been better." However she felt that she could overcome the deficit, adding: " In golf, everything is possible. The good thing about the last three holes here is that you can go eagle, eagle, eagle and be six-under in three holes so you never know."
Elsewhere, Finland’s Riikka Hakkarainen had a hole-in-one at the 131-metre third hole using a gentle six-iron. Hers was the 10th hole-in-one on the Ladies European Tour this season and the second of the tournament following Diana Luna’s ace at the par-three 15th hole on Thursday.

Birmingham University

women's quartet beat

25 men's team to

take world title

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Four women golfers from Birmingham University are the new world student match-play champions after they dismissed the challenge of 25 men’s teams to take the title.
They are: Lucy Williams, the English mid-amateur champion from Mid-Herts Golf Club, Sian James, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, from Bristol & Clifton in Gloucestershire, Charlotte Hope from Wrotham Heath, Kent, and Lauren Spray from Stanton on the Wolds in Nottinghamshire.
They were the only girls’ team in the event at Inglostadt in Munich which was contested by 26 teams from all around the world, including South Africa, the USA, the Netherlands, Sweden and France.
Lucy commented: “It was a massive achievement for Birmingham University as well as English women’s golf considering we were the only girls’ team playing! The girls led from the start. They were top qualifiers after the first day’s stroke-play, finishing three strokes ahead of the University of Manchester team.
In the semi-finals they beat the Warwick men’s team 3-1 and went on to face a German team, Erlangen-Nurnberg, in the foursomes match-play final. Lucy and Charlotte won their match 2 and 1 while Sian and Lauren finished one up.

Marilyn Henderson wins Irish senior

women's title at Ardlee's 19th

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Castlerock’s Marilyn Henderson survived a tense play-off to claim victory over Headfort’s Pauline Walsh and her first Irish senior women’s close title at Ardee Golf Club today.
Henderson started brightly and held a one-hole lead from early on through to the turn. After Henderson’s tree trouble on the tenth, Walsh missed from three feet to square the match but made no mistake at the next, comfortably holing out from four feet.
Henderson’s up and down from the sand on the short 13th saved any disadvantage, but Walsh chipped dead on 14 to edge ahead.
The slim lead was maintained through 16, but Henderson’s steady nerve held firm to square the match on the penultimate green. After Walsh failed to hit the target at the 18th, her pitch from the front edge finished four feet short. Henderson’s putt finished just inside, but both failed to hole out, forcing them to go down the 19th.
Walsh failed to find the green in three after her tee shot found water at the first extra hole and Henderson’s regulation par was good enough to claim her first Irish senior women’s close title.
Earlier in the day, Henderson ended Patricia O’Reilly’s (Headfort) hopes of claiming her first victory with a 4 and 2 win, while Walsh dispatched Olivia Conroy (Co. Longford) by the same margin.
Henderson will now lead the Irish team of six, to be announced shortly, at the European senior women's amateur team championship in Ireland - at Dun Laoghaire, from August 31 to September 4.

Today's results:
Semi-finals
Pauline Walsh (Headfort) bt Patricia O'Reilly (Headfort) 4 and 2.
Marilyn Henderson (Castlerock) bt Olivia Conroy (Co Longford) 4 and 2.
Final
Henderson bt Walsh at 19th.

Heather Anderson beats Moira Thomson

in final of Scottish seniors match-play

Alyth's Heather Anderson, a former Downfield player, won the Scottish senior women's close amateur match-play golf championship over the Montgomery course, Kinross today (Friday). She beat former Scottish girls champion Moira Thomson (Gullane Ladies) by 5 and 3 in the final with approximately two over par figures.
Moira led only once in the match, with a par at the first hole, but Heather then won four of the next five holes to be two up after six. Anderson took a grip on the outcome when she won four holes in a row from the ninth to improve from two up to five holes ahead.
Anderson, pictured, was the Scottish veteran women's championship at Blairgowrie in 2007 and Thomson is also a previous winner of that over-50s title.
Heather was the last of the 16 qualifiers from the stroke-play championship but she knocked out the No 1 seed, Fiona Hunter (Baberton), by a 7 and 5 margin in her first tie.
Moira had qualified in 10th place and claimed the scalp of the defending champion Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) at the 20th in the quarter-finals.
Today's results
Semi-finals - Heather Anderson (Alyth) bt Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) 6 and 4, Moira Thomson (Gullane Ladies) bt Noreen Fenton (Dunbar) 3 and 2.
Final - Anderson bt Thomson 5 and 3.

LPGA TOUR REPORT

Janice Moodie sharing 12th place

after opening round of 67

Janice Moodie, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, had a four-under-par 67 - one of her best rounds on the LPGA Tour this season - to be sharing 12th place at the end of the first day of the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic.
Morgan Pressel outscored her two playing partners - Lorena Ochoa and Yani Tseng, Nos 1 and 2 in the world women's rankings - in the opening round.
Pressel, Song-Hee Kim and Laura Diaz each shot a 7-under 64 to share the lead, one shot ahead of Michelle Wie and Suzann Pettersen on Thursday at Highland Meadows, Sylvania in Ohio.
Leaderboard
"It was a great pairing," Pressel said. "They're both good friends and they have a lot of fun. They're great to play with."
Then Pressel, ranked No. 37, laughed and added, "Even though I hit first all day."
Defending champion Paula Creamer, who shot a personal-best and course-record 60 in last year's first round, withdrew because of a thumb injury moments before her morning tee time.
She said she still hopes to play in next week's U.S. Women's Open at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Pressel was second at the Farr two years ago to five-time winner Se Ri Pak. She didn't have a bogey and birdied four holes in a row late in her round.
Her 64 matched her best round since joining the tour in 2006. After bursting on the scene with a runner-up finish at the 2005 U.S. Women's Open, Pressel was considered a budding LPGA star, and became the youngest player to win a major at the 2007 Kraft Nabisco Championship.
She's won only once since, and is trying to end a victory drought just like her co-leaders.
"This is the best golf I've played in a while," she said.
Kim, who is winless in 56 career LPGA Tour events, twice birdied three consecutive holes during her round. Diaz hasn't won in seven years, but holed a wedge shot for eagle at the par-4 17th hole to move to the top of the leaderboard.
"I've been trying to get my swing going good again," Diaz said. "I just really have spent a lot of time on those things. My putter happily surprised me today and led that ball right into the hole."
Wie also could use a victory. Despite being in the LPGA spotlight since she was 12, and winning the Women's Amateur Publinx a year later, she is winless since earning her tour card last year. She has three top-10 finishes in her seven starts this season.
She used her length off the tee to shoot her lowest competitive round since turning pro, and rebounded from her only bogey to birdie two of her last three holes. Five of Wie's seven birdies came on putts of 10 feet or less.
"The best part of today was just the rhythm and the tempo," said Wie, who won't turn 20 until October. "I was just going along, hitting fairways and greens and making putts. The mental part was the best part. I felt really good out there, and really confident."
Pettersen aced the 154-yard third hole with a 7 iron, the highlight of her round, as 86 players broke par in perfect scoring conditions.
Another shot back of Wie and Pettersen after rounds of 66 were Cristie Kerr, Inbee Park, Jiyai Shin, Lindsey Wright and Jee Young Lee.
The large group at 67 was led by Ochoa, making her first appearance at the Farr since 2004. She offset a double-bogey with birdies on her final two holes.
"I know what I need to do and hopefully tomorrow everything goes well and I can shoot a little bit lower," she said.

Top seed and title-holder Sheena McElroy beaten

DAY OF UPSETS AT SENIOR IRISH WOMENS’

CLOSE CHAMPIONSHIP AT ARDEE

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
On a day of upsets that saw the top four qualifiers exit in the first round, the semi-final line up ensures a new name will adorn the Irish senior women’s close championship trophy when play concludes at Ardee Golf Club tomorrow.
On another day of persistent drizzle, Jane Gardner (Malone) beat leading qualifier and defending champion Sheena McElroy (Grange) in the morning on the 15th green, but fell to championship surprise packet Patricia O’Reilly (Headfort) on the home green in the afternoon.
Phil O’Gorman (Laytown/Bettystown) struck the ball beautifully to beat second qualifier Violet McBride (Belvoir Park) earlier in the day but succumbed to senior international Pauline Walsh (Headfort) in the quarter-finals.
Marilyn Henderson (Castlerock) saw off Madeline Brennan (Carlow) in the morning and then ended Mary Gorry’s hopes with a 15th hole victory. Experienced campaigner Valerie Hassett (Ennis) had earlier fallen to Gorry in the last 16.
Whilst Dun Laoghaire’s Niamh Giblin recorded an impressive win over third qualifier Helen Jones (Strabane) in the morning, County Longford’s Olivia Conroy completes the semi-final line up after displaying battling qualities to defeat Catherine Reilly (The Heath) at the third extra hole in the morning and then see off Giblin on the penultimate green to close the afternoon’s play.
New favourite Henderson plays rookie O’Reilly while Conroy meets Walsh in tomorrow morning’s semi-finals with each harbouring high hopes of capturing the title for the very first time tomorrow afternoon.

Great Dane Lisa equals LET

scoring low with 11-under 62

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Lisa Holm Sorensen has equalled the LET’s all time lowest rounds with an eleven-under-par 62 on a scorching first day at the SAS Ladies Masters.
The 26-year-old Dane posted eleven birdies at Larvik Golfklubb in Norway. She fired six birdies over the back nine, which she played as her first, before carding a further five over the front nine.
The record of eleven-under-par was previously set by England’s Kirsty Taylor during the first round of the 2005 Wales Ladies Championship and then equalled by Swede Nina Reis at last year’s Goteborg Masters at Lycke Golf Club in Sweden. However both courses were par 72s, unlike Larvik, which is a par 73.
Lisa, who won the 2005 Finnair Masters in Finland when the final round was cancelled due to bad weather, hit 17 greens in regulation and had just 25 putts for her best ever round.
" I’m really pleased because I’ve been working really hard and today it just clicked, "she said.
The next best score was English player Samantha Head’s seven-under 66, which included eight birdies and two bogeys.

Top Scot was Michele Thomson, returning to the LET after having to miss last week's AIB Irish Ladies Open at Portmarnoch because, with the inclusion of GB&I women's amateur team for the Vagliano Trophy, there was no room in the field for Michele and others in her LET category of membership.
Michele, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, matched the par of 73. Fellow Scots Vikki Laing, Clare Queen and Lynn Kenny were on the 74 mark.

Scottish senior women's amateur championship

Anderson v Glennie, Fenton

v Thomson in semi-finals

Heather Anderson was in blooming good form over the Montgomery course at Kinross today to reach the semi-finals of the Scottish senior women’s closed amateur golf championship.
The former Downfield and now Alyth player squeezed into the match-play stages as the last of the 16 qualifiers but you would never have known from the quality of performances she produced today.
In the first round she toppled the No 1 seed Fiona Hunter (Baberton) with ease, beating her by 7 and 5.
And to show that was no fluke Heather then beat the eighth best qualifier, former Curtis Cup player and one time world junior champion Suzanne Cadden from Cardross by 3 and 2.
Heather now plays the fourth seed Alex Glennie (Kilmarnock Barassie) for a place in the final. Alex beat former champion Pamela Williamson (Bab erton) by 5 and 3 and then had a 2 and 1 win over Helen Faulds (Douglas Park).
The second semi-final sees Noreen Fenton (Dunbar), the No 3 seed, tackle the 10th qualifier, Moira Thomson (Gullane Ladies), the 1968 Scottish girls champion and, more recently, winner of the Scottish veteran women’s title at Blairgowrie.
Noreen, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, was given a run for her money by 14th seed Frances Neish (Moray) before edgining through on the 18th green in the morning and followed that up with another visit to the last green, winning by two holes against Mary Smith (Tain), the Scottish seniors stroke-play champion last year.
Moira Thomson had a good 2 and 1 win over a that capable Royal Montrose player Kathleen Sutherland before beating the defending match-play champion, Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) at the 20th hole in the last quarter-final to finish.

Caithness class ... Krystle beginning

to sparkle on Ladies European Tour

From the www.herald.co.uk/sport website
By
DOUGLAS LOWE
Anyone wondering about a successor to the hugely successful Scottish trio of Catriona Matthew, Janice Moodie and Mhairi McKay who have shone on the LPGA circuit in the US, might wish to keep an eye on Krystle Caithness, a young woman who is going places fast (pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency).
The 20-year-old Ladies European Tour rookie is hailed as the first woman professional to be produced at St Andrews and her fifth place finish in last week's Irish Open has propelled her to No.16 on the order of merit and straight into this month's Women's British Open at Royal Lytham.
With the added security of an £18,000 prize jingling merrily in her bank account that's not bad going after just five tournaments as a professional on a circuit she views as a stepping stone to her ultimate dream of the lucrative LPGA Tour.
Nothing is certain in the fickle world of tournament golf but there is a gentle air of expectation about this polite, unassuming and hard-working member of the St Regulus club in the town that makes you feel that she will make the grade almost as a matter of inevitability.
Although delighted that her game stood up under the stresses of the closing stages of the Irish Open, there was no sense of being overawed, because she has seen it and done it as an amateur including a Curtis Cup appearance over the Old Course at St Andrews last year.
"It was the best performance I have had all year and it felt good to see my name up there on the leaderboard," she reflected prior to her daily practice routine at the St Andrews Links Trust golf centre and then a game over her favourite Jubilee Course.
"I just treated it as a round of golf even though there were lots of spectators and television cameras.
I have toured on the amateur circuit with the Scotland and then the GB&I squads and there's not a great deal of difference. Then I had a year at the University of Georgia."
She cut that sojourn short, preferring a return to Scotland to prepare for tour school to the alternative of US college golf, but the exercise was beneficial with the year-long season in Georgia accelerating her progress.
"I really enjoyed it," she said.
"The facilities and the competition were amazing and I really feel it brought my game on. It was a hard decision to come back but I wanted to prepare for the European tour. Eventually I would like to be playing in America but I wanted to play in Europe first for experience. It's close to home and I'm learning to do everything on my own before I go back.
"I'm also helped a lot by my coach, Garry Forrester. I've been with him for a year-and-a-half and he's the best coach I've ever had."
She is missing this week's tournament in Norway to enjoy time at home with sister Cherie who played a key role in introducing Krystle to golf and has just had a baby, but returns in a fortnight at the Spanish Open. She is waiting to hear if she has a place in the Evian Masters the following week, but the introduction of Lytham to the schedule has given her a big boost.
"I'm really looking forward to it," she said. "I played at Sunningdale last year as an amateur. It was the first pro tournament I had played in. I missed the cut but it was a good learning experience," she said.
Caithness, who is Kirkcaldy-born and lives in Cupar, has done without a caddie so far to keep costs down, but she did have father Jim helping out in Ireland under strict instructions of "no talking and no advice about clubs".
"He did as I asked him," she laughed, "and there is no doubt that he helped. I took him over as a birthday present and instead of him walking round and watching I asked him to pull my trolley. It's not unusual on the LET to do it yourself but I'd love to have a full-time caddie eventually. It makes a huge difference."

Another LPGA Tour event faces going to the wall

The Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic might be the next LPGA tournament to drop off the schedule during the Credit Crunch..
The Farr, named for the actor who played a reluctant corporal on the classic TV series M*A*S*H, is being played for the 25th time -- and possibly last -- this week at Highland Meadows Golf Club in suburban Toledo, Ohio.
"I don't know what the intricate details are; they'll have to figure those out," Jamie Farr said before hurrying out to play the pro-am. "We have a 50-50 chance of being here next year."
The Farr's $1.4 million purse is among the smallest on the LPGA tour. In tough economic times, tournament officials have pared between $450,000 and $500,000 this year from an already bare-bones budget. The contract with the title sponsor expires after this tournament.
The LPGA had 34 events last year and that number is falling.
Organizers of the two-year-old Kapalua LPGA Classic in Hawaii announced earlier this week that financial problems would cause them to pull out of the last four years of their contract with the tour. LPGA officials threatened to pursue "legal remedies."
The LPGA Corning Classic in Corning, New York State, ended in May after 31 years when its title sponsor called it quits. Along with the Farr, the Michelob Ultra Open's future in Williamsburg, Virginia, is also uncertain.
Farr tournament director Judd Silverman remains upbeat.
"I'm very optimistic. We've been in this position several times before through our 25 years where we've had to negotiate new contracts," he said on the eve of the opening round. "We're going to roll up our sleeves with the LPGA and both parties are going to have to work hard to find a livable business model during some very tough economic times."
He said the Farr tried to spread the sacrifices around. The pro-am gift packages aren't as big, fewer bleachers were set up and past champions were not provided with courtesy vehicles.
Despite that belt-tightening, no one knows if there will be a 26th Farr. The LPGA and Silverman will sit down after the tournament to discuss the event's future.
LPGA officials at the tournament site did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
If the Farr tournament leaves, it'll be another blow to the city that supports it. With its close ties to the auto industry, Toledo's economy is in rough shape with an unemployment rate just under 13 percent.
Over its history, the tournament has donated $6.2 million to about 100 charities.
The primary charity, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Ohio, gets about 8 percent of its annual budget from the tournament.
"They've been very kind to us over the years," said Chad Bringman, executive director.
Losing that money could force the organization, which provides family members of hospitalized children a free place to stay and eat, to cut services, he said.
"We would have to make a stronger pitch to families that use it that we're hurting and could really use a donation," Bringman said. "We're already looking at what we would scale back."
Silverman said if the tournament cannot meet its obligations to local charities, it's not likely to stay afloat.
Toledo mayor Carty Finkbeiner can't fathom the loss of the tournament.
"It would be hurtful to the community's pride, but I don't think that's going to happen," Finkbeiner said. "The LPGA has come to appreciate how much this city pours into the event and its love for Jamie Farr. When it comes to volunteers and love for an event, I think we rank right up there."

Second best qualifier for the match-play stages is Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) who won the title at Deeside last year.
The only one of last year’s semi-finals not to figure among the leading 16, who now go on to the match-lay, after two rounds of stroke-play is Jill Harrison (Cruden Bay) who was nine strokes outside the limit with rounds of 83 and 90 for 173.

MIDLOTHIAN BREAK FIFE GRIP

ON EAST DIVISION TITLE

Midlothian beat title-holders Fife in what should be the decisive match of the East Division women's inter-county team golf championship at Falkirk Golf Club today.

Midlothian took a 2-1 edge over the Scottish champions in the morning foursomes and also claimed the singles by a single point, 3 ½-2 ½ for a 5 ½-3 ½ overall scoreline.

Having beaten East Lothian 7-2 on the opening day, Midlothian are the only team in the four-cornered contest with a 100 per cent two wins out of two record going into the final day action.

Midlothian should clinch a place in the Scottish county finals at Baberton Golf Club in September with a last-day victory over pointless Stirling & Clackmannan who took the singles 3 ½-2 ½ from East Lothian today but lost the match 5-4.

Fife finish off by playing East Lothian but they would need underdogs Stirling & Clackmannan to beat Midlothian while they themselves scored a big margin win over East Lothian.

Jiyai Shin is the million-dollar woman

British Women's Open champion Jiyai Shin picked up her fifth title in 11 months with a seven-stroke victory at the Wegmans LPGA at Rochester, New York State today.
The 21-year-old South Korean shot a one-under 71 to finish at 17-under 271.
Kristy McPherson and Yani Tseng each shot a 66, the day’s best score, to surge into a second-place tie at 10 under.
One behind were rookie Stacy Lewis, Mika Miyazato and Haeji Kang.
Shin carried a four-stroke lead into the final round at tricky Locust Hill in suburban Rochester. She never looked in danger of being caught, even when she picked up two straight bogeys near the close as an afternoon downpour produced a flurry of errors.
This latest victory earned her $300,000, hoisting her to the top of the LPGA Tour money list with $1 million.

Gary Player takes

a swing at

Muirfield’s men-only policy: 'I don't see the point'

FROM THE HERALD WEBSITE
Golf legend Gary Player has hit out at one of Scotland's most famous courses for having a men-only policy.
Player, who at 23 became the youngest Open Championship winner when he lifted the Claret Jug at Muirfield in 1959, has criticised the club ahead of his return to the East Lothian course to host a charity tournament.
The South African said: "I don't see the point of excluding any member of society." The 73-year-old revealed his disapproval of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers' single-sex policy.
He said: "One thing travel has taught me is to have respect for other people's point of view but I have to tell you, I do not agree with the policy. Golf would not be the game it is without women.
"Winston Churchill said that change is the price of survival. I agree with that. I just don't see the point of excluding any member of society.
"That policy is their business. It's a decision they've made and they've got to live with it. I have designed many golf courses all over the world and I wouldn't like to think any of them would exclude women."
Muirfield is set to host the Open for the 16th time in 2013 and the event could draw more attention to the club's single-sex rule.
Club secretary Alastair Brown said: "I'm interested in Gary's comments. His views haven't stopped him from returning to the club."
First Minister Alex Salmond, a keen golfer, has urged Muirfield and other clubs to change their ways.
Of the possibility of the women's British Open taking place at Muirfield, he said: "It might encourage them to change their views

Ann Wallace of the Irish Ladies Golf Union presents the Phil Garvey Trophy for the leading amateur performance to Jodi Ewart (Catterick).
Krystle has seven birdies in final

round to finish fifth in Ireland

Rookie pro Krystle Caithness from Fife finished fifth in the weather-hit AIB Irish Ladies Open at Portmarnock links near Dublin today. Yet, with a little bit of luck, the Scot might well have gone close to her first pro win.
Krystle scored 71, 69 and 70 for a total of six-under-par 210 - five shots behind the winner, Italy's Diana Luna who scored 68, 69 and 68 for 11-under 215.
But a close examination of Miss Caithness's final scorecard reveals that she had a double bogey 67 at the 10th and also dropped single shots at the first, second and 17th in halves of 36 and 34.
Krystle also had an amazing bag of seven birdies - at the third, sixth, 11th, 12th, 13th, 15th and 16th.
Forget about the shots dropped and Krystle could almost have forced a play-off with Luna on 205.

Northern Counties in the driving

seat after two days at Dornoch

Northern Counties are in the driving seat with two wins out of two as the North Division women’s inter-county team championship enters its third and final day at Royal Dornoch Golf Club on Monday.
Mathematically, they can still be caught if they were to lose their last match to Aberdeenshire while Angus had a big win over Perth & Kinross, but the odds against such a double whammy are long, to say the least.
Northern Counties opened their campaign by beating title-holders Perth & Kinross 5 ½-3 ½ on Saturday and followed that up with an impressive 7-2 win today over Angus who had edged a 5-4 win over Aberdeen on the first day.
Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) who had beaten P&K's Carly Booth in the lead-off singles on Saturday, continued in good form with a 2 and 1 win over Angus youngster Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies) who has won both her county's women's and girls' titles this year.
Angus introduced Ailsa's mother Mary Summers into the singles line-up - and she won the No 5 tie. In fact Angus both both the last two singles, thanks to Mary and Ann Ramsay.
But the damage had been done higher up the batting order with Northern Counties winning the top four ties through Kelsey MacDonald, Cara Gruber, Sammy Vass and Pam Mackay.
Perth & Kinross drew 4 1/2-4 ½ with Aberdeenshire in today's other match. The top singles between Scotland team-mates Carly Booth (Comrie) and Laura Murray (Alford) ended in a surprisingly easy win for Carly by 7 and 5.
The winners of the Northern Division title go forward to the four-cornered contest for the Scottish women’s county team championship at Baberton Golf Club, Edinburgh from September 18 to 20.

Today's results:

PERTH & KINROSS 4 ½, ABERDEENSHIRE 4 ½

Weather delays at Ladies Irish Open:

Finish not now expected until 8pm

The third and final round of the AIB Ladies Irish Open is underway after two delays due to a sea fog at Portmarnock Links this morning.
Play resumed at 4.04pm and is due to finish at approximately 8pm this evening.
The final round was suspended for 30 minutes from 9.50am due to a dense sea fog which rolled in from across the Irish Sea with a second, 3hr suspension at 1pm.
The last group had played two holes and were standing on the third tee before the second delay.
Italian Diana Luna heads the field on seven-under-par and is being chased by three other players on six-under. Frenchwoman Gwladys Nocera, who won five LET titles last year, picked up two early birdies in her first four holes to trail the lead by one with Sweden’s Sophie Gustafson and England’s Melissa Reid. Gustafson, Reid and Luna have opened with three straight pars.
Amateur Danielle McVeigh leads the Irish challenge on one-over after six holes with new professional, Tara Delaney, one behind.

Northern Counties

loosen P & K

grip on North

Division title

Perth & Kinross's grip on the North Division women's inter-county title was loosened at Royal Dornoch yesterday when they lost their opening match 5 1/2-3 1/2 to Northern Counties.
In the other tie, Angus beat Aberdeenshire 5-4.
Northern Counties had a 2-1 edge over P&K from the morning foursomes and got a vital point from the top singles when Kelsey MacDonald, the Scottish Under-21 champion from Nairn Dunbar, beat Curtis Cup teenager Carly Booth (Comrie) by 4 and 3.
Emily Ogilvy (Auchterarder) and Laura Walker (Muckhart) won their ties for P&K to level the scoreline at 3-3 but Northern Counties prevailed when Sammy Vass (Tain) and Alison Bartlett (Royal Dornoch) won the fourth and fifth singles and Mary Smith (Tain) halved the last match with P&K's Fiona Ramsay.
Aberdeenshire, lacking the services of their county champion, Sara Mathieson, who is on honeymoon following her wedding to Kings Acre assistant professional Terry Mathieson, trailed Angus 2-1 after the morning foursomes and then split the singles 3-3.
Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies), the teenager who holds both the Angus women's and girls county championships, beat Scotland cap Laura Murray (Alford) 5 and 4 in the top singles.
