There's more to Amanda Blumenherst

than golfing skills ....

United States Curtis Cup player Amanda Blumenherst, in her final weeks as a senior student at Duke University, has been awarded the Dinah Shore Trophy Award by the LPGA Foundation. The Dinah Shore Trophy Award recognises a female US collegiate golfer who excels in both academics and athletics. The nominees must also demonstrate outstanding leadership skills and community service.
Blumenherst, who also received the 2008 Dinah Shore Trophy Award, will earn her degree at Duke in history, with minors in English and theatre studies.
Blumenherst, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency in action in last year's Curtis Cup match over the Old Course, St Andrews, has maintained an impressive 3.81 GPA and 72.86 scoring average this season.
As part of the Dinah Shore Trophy Award, Duke University’s women’s golf program will receive a $10,000 grant. The award and the grant are both funded through The LPGA Foundation’s Dinah Shore Scholarship Fund and the Friends of Golf (FOG) organization.
During her four years at Duke, Blumenherst has been an active member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), serving on the executive board three of those years. She was also the lead organiser of Project Share, a Duke student-athlete-run program in which athletes ‘adopt’ families at Christmas time and provide them with presents for the holidays.
This past year, Blumenherst has played an active role in many initiatives, including Habitat for Humanity, Blue Devil Days – a panel of Duke student-athletes who help promote Duke athletics to prospective student-athletes – and an event called MLK “Million Meals.” This event allowed members of the women’s golf team to help package meals to be sent world-wide for populations in need of hunger relief.

Maria Hernandez and Arizona

University win NCAA titles

Arizona University won the NCAA Division 1 women's team championship for the first time since 1998 and Maria Hernandez (Purdue University) followed in the footsteps of another Spanish player, Azahara Munoz (Arizona University) as winner of the individual title at Caves Valley, Maryland.
With her victory, Hernandez, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, from the Spanish "bull run city" of Pampolona, may have sealed her national player of the year title. She won six times this season including her second Big Ten title. In the final round at Caves Valley, she birdied two of her last three holes to shoot 71 and finish at one-over 289, one shot ahead of Jennifer Song (Souothern California) and two clear of Sweden's Pernila Lindberg (Oklahoma State).
“I don’t think I believe it right now,” Hernandez said. “I knew today that I had to go all out.”
Maria, who has completed her four years at Purdue University, is ranked No 7 on the women's college circuit. She is in the field - as are Pernilla Lindberg, Azahara Munoz, Carlota Ciganda and most of the leading Europeans - for next month's British women's open amateur championship at Royal St David's Golf Club, Harlech in North Wales.
Curtis Cup player Jodi Ewart, after another very good season for New Mexico University, never touched that kind of form in the end-of-season championship.
Jodi, from Catterick, finished joint 39th in the field of 126 with scores of 78, 73, 78 and 75 for 16-over-par 304.
The other English player in the field, the 2007 English girls champion Ellie Givens (Denver University) from Darlington finished joint 63rd on 21-over-par 309 with scores of 73, 80, 80 and 76.
Scotland's Gemma Webster (Ohio State) scored 87, 87, 77 and then an excellent last round of 71 - a fitting way to end her US college golf career - for a total of 322 and 109th place.

Megan Briggs is new Scottish champion-

4&3 win in final over Louise Kenney

Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) is the 95th Scottish women's closed amateur champion.
She beat Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) by 4 and 3 in the 18-hole final at Southerness Golf Club on the north shore of the Solway Firth this morning.
Megan, one down after two holes, took a grip on the final by winning four holes in a row from the fifth with par figures.
At the turn, the 19-year-old Renfrewshire county champion for the past four years and a Strathclyde University student, was three up on her Scotland international team-mate, Louise Kenney, a 26 year old schoolteacher
Megan has a handicap of one, Louse has a +1 rating.

BRIGGS: 4-5-5-3-5-4-3-4-4--OUT 37 (one over par) Three up KENNEY:4-4-5-3-6-5-4-5-4--OUT 40 (three over par)

Kenney scored her first success since the second hole with a par at the short 10th. Briggs was bunkered off the tee and came out to 8ft but missed the putt. Kenney but fell back to three down again by bogeying the par-4 11th.
Kenney drove into the heather from the 11th tee, and mishit her second which just carried the ditch in front of the green. She played a good pitch but missed the putt. Briggs was on in two and, with two putts, went three up once more.
The 12th was halved in bogey 5s. Kenney drove into the bunker on the right and Megan just carried it. All Kenny could do was get it out. Megan put her second shot left of the green. Kenny hit a very good fairway wood on to the green. Megan chipped On. Kenney left her putt short but two-putted. Holed halved. Briggs still three up.
The long 13th was halved in birdie 4s and both drove well. Briggs three up with five to play.
Briggs made it back-to-back birdies with a 4 at the long 14th to go four up.
Kenney drove into the heather on the right. Briggs hit middle of the fairway with her drive. Kenney came up short of the green in two but two putted Briggs also two putts.
Both hit the green at the short 15th. Two putts head for a half in threes left Briggs the champion by 4 and 3. She holed a two-footer for the championship.
Megan, with three birdies to her credit, was one over par approximately for the holes play. Louise, who had two birdies. was roughly five over par at the finish.
The final was played in a very friendly spit. The captain of the Southerness club, Ian Wilson, remarked on it in his closing speech. Both players were very generous with their concessions.
It was quite windy - is Southerness every wind-less? - although not as bad as the qualifying days. A steady light drizzle for the first swix holes but it dried up. Not a warm day.
The scoring was disappointing with Louise Kenney probably disappointed with her driving. She had some great up and downs in the first half.
The Southerness fairways are wide but if you miss then you are often in heather and the resulting shot is unpredictable.
There is a match-play saying that you play your good golf getting to the final, not usually in it. That is almost certainly true as far as Louise Kenney is concerned. She peaked in her quarter-final win over the No 2 seed, Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle), in which she had back-to-back eagles on the inward half and was four under par in winning by 3 and 2.

England’s Nicola Race wins second national US title

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
English student golfer Nicola Race has won her second national title on the US women’s college circuit.
Nicola, from Witham in Essex, successfully defended her title in the National Junior College Championship. The 20-year-old also led Redlands Community College, Oklahoma, to a repeat victory in the national team championship.
Nicola’s double victory came at the end of a weather-disrupted tournament as severe storms lashed Florida. The championship should have been played at the LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach but heavy rains meant it was unfit for play. Instead the event was moved to Providence Golf Club and, due to time constraints, reduced to an 18-hole winner-takes-all round.
Nicola made the most of her opportunity. She was four shots off the pace after nine holes but stormed home in 31 for a two-under par 70 and a four-stroke win.
Meanwhile, the team score of 297 put Redlands 15 strokes ahead of their closest challengers. Nicola will transfer to the University of Missouri in August. Before starting her college career she was in the English Women’s Golf Association Select South East Squad.

It's Megan Briggs v Louise Kenney

for the Scottish championship

Two first-time finalists, 19-year-old Megan Briggs from Kilmacolm, and 26-year-old Louise Kenney from the Pitreavie club, Dunfermline will contest the 18-hole climax to the 95th Scottish women's closed amateur golf championship over the Southerness links on the north shore of the Solway Firth tomorrow morning.
Strathclyde University student Briggs, the No 4 seed, won her semi-final at the 19th against Jane Turner (Mortonhall), the 19-year-old British Universities champion and No 8 qualifier.
Primary schoolteacher Kenney, the No 10 qualifier, beat her Fife county team-mate, Elaine Moffat (St Regulus), the No 22 qualifier, by 5 and 4 in the second semi-final.
Both Briggs, who has a handicap of one, and Kenney, who has a +1 rating, played for Scotland in last year's women's home internationals at Wrexham. But neither is a member of the Great Britain & Ireland short leet for the Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe at Hamburg in July. Still a good performance by either at next month's British women's open amateur championship at Harlech could still gain them admission to skipper Mary McKenna's squad of nine.
It will not be a first time in a national match-play final for either player. Briggs lost to Carly Booth in the final of the Scottish Under-18 girls championship at Peterhead in 2007.
Kenney won the same title in 2000, beating Carnoustie's Fiona Gilbert in the final.
Louise, who spent four years on the US college circuit and was rated one of the best golfers ever to have played for Iowa State University, was roughly level par in her victory over Moffat, who won the Scottish women's championship at North Berwick in 1998 and is now in her 40s. A good effort by Elaine to get as far as the last four.
A double bogey 6 at Moffat at the sixth opened the door for Kenney to go one up, a lead she doubled at the next when her opponent, in trouble, conceded. Moffat had more bogey trouble to lose the 12th, 13th and 14th and the match.
Kenney was roughly level par for the holes played. She had played the best golf by anyone in the morning quarter-finals, being four under par in knocking out the No 2 seed, Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle) by 3 and 2.
Louise had been one down after 11 holes. She then transformed the situation with a grandstand finish, winning the next four holes in a row with a par-eagle-eagle-par run which propelled her three holes ahead after 15. A half in 5 at the next ended the match, with Kylie wondering what had hit her!
Briggs has been Renfrewshire women's champion for the past four years, even though she is still only 20. Her match-play experience from events like that pulled her through against Turner who was two up at the turn.
Briggs won the 11th, 12th and 13th with a birdie-par-birdie run to take a one-hole lead but she bogeyed the 15th to be pulled back to all square. From there in, it was a case of who would have the strongest nerve. The 16th, 17th and 18th holes were halved in par before Megan was conceded the 19th and a place in the final.
Briggs, who had been two under par in beating fellow international Laura Murray in the morning, was roughly one over par in the semi-final.
The final will tee off at 9am on Saturday morning.
The Clark Rosebowl final was won by 18-year-old Scotland girl international Sammy Vass, the North of Scotland girls champion from Tain. She beat Louise Fraser (Kingsknowe) by 4 and 3, having been three up after 10.
Sammy, the daughter of a former Scotland junior international, Margaret (Magi) Russell, will enrol at the University of Central Florida in the autumn for four years. So, the likelihood, this will be her last Scottish women's championshipuntil 2014.

The projected cut figure is that players will need to total 146 or better to make the last two rounds. Krystle Caithness (72-73) and Lynn Kenny (68-77) are both safe on 145 and so too is Clare Queen who has scored 69 and 75 for 144.

In the semi-finals spotlight: Jane Turner v Megan Briggs and Elaine Moffat v Louise Kenney

This afternoon's semi-finals in the 95th Scottish women's closed amateur championship over the Southerness links at the Solway Firth will feature 19-year-old Jane Turner (Mortonhall) against 20-year-old Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) and "fortysomething" Elaine Moffat (St Regulus) versus 26-year-old Louise Kenney Pitreavie)
Aberdeenshire's surviving players, Carol Wilson (Murcar Links) and Laura Murray (Alford) were both beaten in this morning's quarter-finals.
Carol, the 16th qualifier for the match-play stages, toppled the No 1 seed Pamela Pretswell in the second round but she could not raise her game a second time and went down by 4 and 3 to Robert Gordon University student Jane Turner (Mortonhall), the British universities championship and the No 8 qualifier.
Turner won three holes in a row with par figures from the eighth in the decisive swing of the match. Three up on the 11th tee, Jane double bogeyed the 12th to keep Wilson's hopes alive.
Then Turner birdied the 14th and won the 15th with a par to finish the match. Jane had only one birdie in the match, at the long 14th, and was several over par for the 15 holes played.
In the battle of the fourth and fifth seeds, Megan Briggs beat Laura Murray (Alford) by 3 and 1.
Briggs had been two up after nine but Murray won back the 12th and there was little in it until Briggs suddenly produced scoring fireworks. She birdied the long 13th, the long 14th and another par-5 hole, the 16th.
Murray was able to halve the 13th and 14th but could not match her opponent's 4 at the 16th. Briggs finished the tie off in the grand style with a 2 at the short 17th, her fourth birdie in the last five holes for a victory that put her in against Jane Turner in the first semi-final.
Megan was two under par for the match.
The other semi-final will feature the 1998 Scottish champion at North Berwick, Elaine Moffat (St Regulus), and Fife county team-mate Louise Kenney (Pitreavie).
Moffat, the oldest of the quarter-finalists, beat the youngest - 14-year-old Lesley Atkins (Minto) by 4 and 3 with level par figures.
Atkins won the second with a par but bogeyed the fourth to be pulled back to all square. After four halved holes, young Lesley boged the ninth and the 11th to fall two down.
Moffat was able to go three up even with a bogey 5 at the 12th. After a half in birdie 4s at the par-5 13th, Elaine also got a birdie 4 at the lonth 14th to go four up. A half in 3 at the short 15th finished the tie.
Kenney, the 10th qualifier, was four under par in beating the No 2 seed Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle) by 3 and 2.
Louise won the first hole with a birdie but bogeyed the second and third to go one down. The next eight holes were halved in one under par figures - both birdied the ninth and the rest were halved in regulation.
Kylie bogeyed the 12th to be pulled back to all square. Kenney produced eagle 3s at the long 13th and long 14th to win them both and then took her fourth hole in a row for a three-hole lead with a par 3 at the 15th.
A half in par at the 16th ended the contest in Kenney's favour.
The afternoon Clark Rosebowl final will be contested by Louise Fraser (Kingsknowe) and young Sammy Vass (Tain).
Louise beat Jenny Jenkins (Ralston) by 5 and 3 while Sammy beat Linda Urquhart (Banchory) 4 and 2 in the other semi-final.

Jennifer on Song in NCAA Division 1

Women's College Championship

Jennifer Song, coming up to the end of her freshman (first) year at Southern California University has taken a two-shot lead with a third-round 71 in the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship and help the Trojans top the team standings.
Song, one of three Southern Cal players in the leading 20, has an even-par total of 216 over the Caves Valley course in Maryland.
Purdue's Maria Hernandez (72) from Spain and UCLA's Maria Jose Uribe (77) from Colombia are tied for second place at 2-over-par.
"We are mentally and physically prepared," Song said. "We've been preparing for this event for one year and all of my team-mates are really ready and pumped up. We've been having a lot of second places and I think this is our chance to win."
Southern Cal had a 26-over 890 total for a one-stroke lead over top-ranked Arizona State in the team event. No. 2 UCLA was three strokes back at 29 over.
"Our overall goal was to improve each day and I know we moved up and are now in first," Southern California coach Andrea Gaston said. "You just have to go out there and play this golf course. If the opportunity for birdies is out there, you have to go get them. We're still going to have to play really great golf tomorrow to win this. We can't just go out and protect this."
England's two representatives in the major event of the women's college golf season are not doing well.

Krystle, Michele have to get up

early to finish first rounds

Krystle Caithness and Michele Thomson were among the last five groups to start in the first round of the Ladies German Open at Golfpark Gut Hausern near Munich ... and they were unable to complete their rounds.Play was suspended for the day at 6.30pm local time due to torrential rain and thunderstorms. They had to book early calls at their hotels so that they can be back on the course ready to resume where they left off at 7.50am.Other than that it was a good day for the Scots with Lynn Kenny showing her best form for ages.

The Dunblane player, a former Scottish women's amateur champion returned a four-under-par 68 to be joint seventh over night. Lynn bogeyed the second but then had a purple patch with birdies at the third, sixth, ninth, 11th and 12th in halves of 34.

Clare Queen had a 69, coming home in 35 with birdies at the 10th and 11th.Vikki Laing had a 73 (37-36).

Sweden’s Johanna Westerberg fired a career low round of seven-under 65 to lead by a stroke.
The seventh year tour player recorded seven birdies with five on the front nine and two on the back.
Westerberg, yet to win on the Ladies European Tour, credited the help of her fiancé, tennis star Joachim Johansson, who is acting as her caddie this week. The two became engaged last month and are planning to marry in summer next year.
She explained: “I missed the cut last week and I felt I didn’t play that bad but I couldn’t hole a putt for my life. Today I’ve been practising putting a bit and it feels a lot better. My fiancé is here caddying for me and he’s helping me to line up. I trust my aim a lot better. Last week was my first tournament in a while. I just feel more ready this week.”
Westerberg’s previous best finish on the LET was second, most recently last year in Turkey.
Spain’s Emma Cabrera-Bello and Jade Schaeffer of France are a shot back on six-under-par, with Australian Karen Lunn, Italy’s Stefania Croce and Spain’s Paula Marti on five-under-par. England’s Melissa Reid started the day with a hole-in-one at the fourth hole and finished on 68 alongside South Korean rookie Jessica Ji and Lynn Kenny.
Reid used a six-iron to ace the 160-yard par-three fourth hole and she explained: “It was my third one. I got one at age 11 and then I had one last year as an amateur. It was nice. I didn’t quite pure it as much as I wanted to but it wasn’t too bad and it was in the right direction.” According to her caddie, professional golfer Paul Vincent-Fernie, the ball pitched at 157 yards and rolled right into the hole, before Reid leapt into his arms, thinking that she had won a car. The 2008 Ryder Cup Wales Rookie of the Year had her eye on the Audi A5 cabriolet, on offer for a hole-in-one at the 15th, despite the fact that she currently drives an Audi Q5. “There was no car. I was gutted. I hugged my caddie and was like, “Yeah!” but then no car so just some champagne I think. “I was pretty close on the next par-three as well so I was going to try to get a hole-in-one on every hole so that they would have to give me a car. I must be saving it again for 15, where the car is.”
After a second place finish in Switzerland last week, she remains in the hunt for her first career title. “Four-under is not too bad. I shot four-under and didn’t feel 100 percent this morning. No complaints shooting in the 60s in the first round. You can’t win it on the first day, so not a bad start,” she said. “This week I feel my chances are good.”

Afternoon of upset results in "Scottish" at Southerness

Carol Wilson KOs top seed

Pamela Pretswell in Round 2

Top seed Pamela Pretswell was knocked out of the 95th Scottish women's closed amateur championship in the second round of the match-play stages at Southerness Golf Club this afternoon.
The reigning Swiss women's open amateur champion, Pamela was beaten 3 and 2 by the 16th qualifier, Carol Wilson (Murcar Links).
Pamela, one of the backmarkers in the championship with +2 of a handicap, had scored the lowest round in each of the qualifying rounds (76-72), for which she collected a lot of silverware at Tuesday night's presentation of prizes in the Southerness clubhouse.
Aberdeenshire county player Carol, pictured above, is in her early 30s and the daughter of last year's SLGA chairman, Pat Wilson, has a handicap of three and had a qualifying total of 161 (79-82) compared to Pretswell's 148.
But match-play golf is a great leveller.
Pamela, a 20-year-old Glasgow University student, was apparently nursing a sore shoulder today but the West of Scotland champion from Bothwell Castle would be the last to put that forward as an excuse for this major form upset.
There must be a jinx on leading qualifiers in this championship in recent years.
Last year's top seed at Lossiemouth, Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar), was beaten by the 32nd qualifier, Sammy Vass (Tain) in the first round of the match-play.
Later, on an afternoon of shock results, 14-year-old Lesley Atkins (Minto) beat the No 3 qualifier, Katy McNicoll (Carnoustie Ladies) by two holes ... and former Scottish champion Elaine Moffat (St Regulus) - 1998 at North Berwick - beat Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar), the Scottish Under-21 champion, by 4 and 3.

REPORT IN US MEDIA

UCLA's Maria Jose Uribe shot a 6-under 66 to take a two-stroke lead in the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships and help the Bruins open a stroke-shot advantage in the team competition.
Uribe, the Colombian star who won the 2007 US Women's Amateur, had a 3-under 141 total on the Caves Valley course. Wake Forest's Nanette Hill (71), Denver's Stephanie Sherlock (73) and Pepperdine's Lisa McCloskey (69) were 1 under with two rounds left.
``It's a pretty tough course,'' Uribe said. ``If you're not in the fairway, it's going to be tough. If you have a good round, numbers like 66 and 67 are very reachable. I love to play courses like this.''
UCLA topped the team standing at 13 over. Southern California was second at 20 over, followed by Denver (22 over), and Arizona State, Oklahoma State and North Carolina at 24 over.

Lisa Maguire wins Irish title with

brilliant five-under-par display

Beaten in the final by her twin sister Leona 12 months ago, Lisa today won the Lancome Irish women's closed amateur championship at Fota Island Golf Resort, Cork.
The No 1 qualifier - for the second year in a row, 14-year-old Lisa from the Slieve Russell club in Co Cavan, beat the No 2 qualifier Mary Dowling (New Ross) by 5 and 4 in the 18-hole final. Lisa was five under par for the holes played, having been six under at one stage.
Maguire played quality golf, birdieing the second, third, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth in covering the first eight holes in a phenomenal six under par!
Lisa had only 11 putts over the first nine holes.
Dowling matched Lisa's birdie at the eighth and produce another one at the ninth but found herself four down at the turn, despite having covered the first nine holes herself in two under par.
Lisa’s only bogey of the day came at the 11th hole where she missed a 6 ft putt for par. Solid pars for the remaining holes saw her win the title for the first time on the 14th green.

95th Scottish women's amateur closed championship

Pamela Pretswell leading

qualifier with 72 for 148

Improved weather brought improved scoring but no change at the top of the qualifying leaderboard in the 95th Scottish women’s amateur golf championship at Southerness links on the shores of the Solway Firth today..
Overnight leader Pamela Pretswell, a Glasgow University student and member of the Bothwell Castle club, duly claimed the No 1 seed position among the 32 who advance to the match-play stages. And she underlined her claims to be the favourite with a second-round, one-under-par 72, the best round of the two days, compared with her opening score of 76 in the windblown first day, which was also the best of that day.
Hamilton-based Pretswell, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, has never been able to enter this championship before due to first school and later university examinations clashing with it. She is obviously playing well, having won the West of Scotland title recently and last summer’s victory in the Swiss women’s open amateur title put her on the short leet for the Great Britain & Ireland team to play the Continent of Europe in Hamburg in July.
Big-hitting Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle), another member of the GB&I squad, again birdied four par-5 holes in returning a 74 for the No 2 qualifying spot on 151.
Carnoustie’s Katy McNicoll, brother of Keir who won the St Andrews Links Trophy and Leven Gold Medal last season, did very well to be the third best qualifier on 155.
She flew back to Scotland last week after graduating at Lynn University, Boca Raton and has had little or no time to acclimatise after the heat and comparatively calm weather of Florida.
But she put together rounds of 79 and 76 to qualifying for the match-play stages with ease. Two former Scottish champions, Elaine Moffat (St Regulus) on 163 and Martine Pow (Selkirk) on 164, qualified but the third former title-holder in the field of 80, Anne Laing (Vale of Leven) did not with a total of 171.
Martine Pow was one of three players whose 36-hole totals were good enough to qualify them for the match-play stages but they withdrew due to unavailability.
Martine is a Scotland selector and will be kept busy over the remainder of the championship running her eye over prospect international candidates.
Students Rachael Watton (Mortonhall), 80-78 for 158, and Alyson McKechin (Elderslie), 84-80 for 164, pulled out because of examinations later in the week.
Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) was the first player over the two days to equal the par of 73 for the 6010yd course and her Scotland international team-mate, Laura Murray (Alford) posted a 74, which put them both on the 156 mark at the head of the mid-afternoon finishers.
They were knocked off the top spot just after 5pm by Katy McNicoll who birdied the ninth, 13th and 14th in adding a 76 to her opening 79 for a 155 total.
At the end of the day, Megan appeared as No 4 seed and Laura as No 5.
Scottish Under-21 champion, Kelsey Macdonald (Nairn Dunbar), the third GB&I squad member in the championship, had a frustrating day which saw her drop down to the No 6 seed berth with a repeat of her first-round 78 despite the improvent in the conditions.
The Stirling University student, who began the qualifying process with a 9 at the par-4 first hole on Tuesday, today had a double bogey 6 at the third and a triple bogey 7 at the 12th.
As No 1 qualifier at Lossiemouth 12 months ago, Kelsey was beaten in the first round by Tain's Sammy Vass. Maybe she will prosper in a lower place among the qualifiers..
The withdrawal of Pow, McKechin and Watton meant that the play-off was not on 166 but instead involved the four players who totalled 168 - Claire Hargan (Mortonhall), Gillian Lockhart (Kilmarnock Barassie), Fiona Gilbert (Carnoustie Ladies) and Diane Macdonald (Dumfries & County).
They set off on a four-way play-off for the last two places. The play-off started at the 16th which Diane "won" with a 4 and Gillian was eliminated with a 6. Fiona and Claire both had 5s so they carried on halved the 17th in 4 before Claire claimed the last place (she is actually No 31 in the draw - too complicated to explain) by holing an eagle putt for a 3.
One of the pleasing features of the composition of the 32 qualifiers is the number of teenagers who are still in the championship.
Youngest of all is 14-year-old Lesley Atkins (Minto) who recently became the youngest ever Borders county champion. She qualified in the No 14 position. A great achievement for one so young.
Then there's 15-year-old Ailsa Summers (Carnoustie Ladies) who qualified even higher than Lesley - in the No 9 spot to be precise. Again a performance that augurs well for the future.
Aberdeenshire teenager Samantha Leslie (Westhill), who reached the final of her women's county championship two or three weeks back, qualified in 17th place. Ironically for Aberdeenshire, Samantha plays Murcar Links' Carol Wilson in the first round.

NCAA Division 1 women's championship

Ellie Givens has a 73 but Jodi Ewart runs

short of birdies in a first-round 78

Curtis Cup player Jodi Ewart, a student at New Mexico University, has been playing sweetly all season on the US college circuit ... until this week's NCAA Division 1 women's championship at Caves Valley Golf Club - where they've played the Palmer Cup men's students' match in the past - Owing Mills in Maryland.
Jodi, from Yorkshire, had a six-over-par 78 in the opening round of the 72-hole tournament to be eight shots behind joint leaders Catherine O'Donnell (North Carolina) and Stephanie Sherlock (Denver).
Ewart is tied 60th alongside Denver's Sarah Faller from Ireland and Southern California's Spanish ace, Belen Mozo.
Jodi had a double bogey 6 at the 10th in halves of 39. She had only two birdies all day, which is well below her normal capacity to shoot sub-par figures.
US Curtis Cup player and favourite for the title, Amanda Blumenherst, the US women's amateur champion, could not have been all that pleased with herself for returning a75 over the 6,443yd, par-72 course.
Former English girls champion Ellie Givens (Denver), pictured above, from Darlington had a 73 to be a creditable joint seventh.
Former Scotland international Gemma Webster (Ohio State) had an 87 (43-44) to be tied for 121st place in a field of 126.

Move to allow more US college students to enter

European women's individual championship

& Vagliano Trophy dates to change from 2010

NEWS RELEASE ISSUE BY LADIES GOLF UNION AND EUROPEAN GOLF ASSOCIATION

The Ladies’ Golf Union (LGU) and European Golf Association (EGA) have agreed on a change of dates for the 2011 Vagliano Trophy. The historic match, traditionally played one week following The Open Championship in late July, will be moved to late June, four weeks earlier. The new dates will become the permanent match fixture for the foreseeable future.
In 2011, the match will be played at Royal Porthcawl, Wales, on June 24th and 25th.The move has been motivated by a rearrangement of the EGA calendar to allow more US college-based Europeans to attend one of the year’s premier fixtures: the International European Ladies’ Amateur Championship.
In 2010, the event will be held on the 20th to 24th of July instead of in late August and will remain scheduled in this week, vacated by the Vagliano Trophy, for future editions.
Moving the Vagliano Trophy and European Ladies’ Amateur to their new dates will ease a hectic fixture list for the elite players and assist the LGU while it prepares for the Ricoh Women’s British Open.
The field of the British Ladies’ Amateur Stroke Play Championship, held in late August, will also benefit from the change.
From 2011, Vagliano Trophy team selections will be held earlier in the year.
The Vagliano Trophy was presented to the Comité des Dames de la Fédération Française de Golf and the Ladies’ Golf Union by Monsieur A. A. Vagliano, originally for an annual competition between France and Great Britain and Ireland.
Since 1959, by mutual agreement, the Continent of Europe competes against Great Britain and Ireland biennially.

Miss MacRae first woman in field since Meg Farquhar in 1933

Well done, Heather! She's one of the

boys for Scottish PGA Championship

Winner of the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Nairn in 2005 and unlucky to be named only a Curtis Cup reserve, Heather MacRae from Dunblane is now settling down to life in the professional side of the game. which, in her case, means being PGA-trained as an assistant at Gullane.
That does not leave a lot of time for much else but she has been appearing in the odd pro-am on the Tartan Tour and, a week or two, she did well in a WPGA event in England. Now, she has done even better, a lot better in fact.
At Downfield Golf Club, Dundee on Tuesday, 25-year-old Heather, picture by Cal Carson Golf Agency, was one of 47 players to come through the 18-hole qualifying test and earn a place in the £55,000 Gleneagles Scottish PGA championship from June 25 to 28.
Her older brother Andrew is also an assistant pro - at Gleneagles - and he is already in the field.
"I'm absolutely delighted. This was the goal at the start of the year and to make it is a great feeling. It will be great for the two of us to be playing," said Heather.
"I would've liked to have shot a low score (at Downfield) but the conditions made it a battle but I came through it and that's all that matters."
She did have two birdies, at the long seventh and short 12th but she dropped shots at the sixth, ninth, 14th and 16th in halves of 37 and 38 for a two-over-par 75 in thoroughly unpleasant conditions of wind and rain.
Gordon Dewar, the Scottish PGA secretary, said: "It's fantastic news that we will have Heather at our national championship. It will be something different and will add a new dimension to the event."
Peter McLachlan (West Kilbride), the Scottish youths champion of 2005, Inchmarlo's Mark Barnard and James Smallwood (Fereneze) headed the field of 81 at Downfield on Tuesday - 77 played at the same venue on Monday in another 18-hole eliminator.
Gordon Sherry, former British amateur champion, who is gradually putting a competitive edge back on his game, qualified on the same mark as Heather MacRae, sharing 11th place on 75.
Aberdour's Antonia Ffinch, the other female hopeful in the field, failed in her qualifying quest after an 89.
The qualifying cut-off point on Tuesday was 78 or better compared with 79 or better on Monday when 46 players qualified for the main event.

MEG FARQUHAR FOOTNOTE
Newspaper reports that Heather MacRae will be the first female professional to play in the Scottish PGA championship have got it wrong.
The late Meg Farquhar, who was an assistant professional at her home town Moray Golf Club in Lossiemouth, played in the 1933 Scottish professional championship over her home course.
We will recall Meg in a future article soon on Kirkwoodgolf.co.uk

Lisa Maguire v Mary Dowling for

the Lancome Irish women's title

It's the No 1 seed, 14-year-old Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell) against the No 3 qualifier, Mary Dowling (New Ross) for the Lancome Irish women's close championship won last year by Lisa's 14-year-old sister Leona.
Incidentally, Leona's second-round conqueror yesterday, Victoria Bradshaw (Bangor), suffered a reaction to that high, as is often the case, and she did not do herself justic in a 3 and 2 defeat by Laura McCarthy (Muskerry) in the round of the last eight.
Today's quarter and semi-finals provided a fantastic day of entertainment for the spectators who braved the blustery and showery conditions at Fota Island Golf Resort, Cork.
Lisa need three birdies in the last five holes to see off the quarter-final challenge of Limerick's Catherine Tucker by 3 and 1 and then she tackled Niamh Kitching (Claremorris) to see if she could reach the final two years in a row.
Early birdies were exchanged but Niamh could do little to stop Lisa who birdied three holes in a row around the turn to be four holes up after 13. Halves at the next two holes put Lisa through as a 4 and 3 winner.
In the second semi-final, Mary Dowling played virtually flawless golf in the testing conditions. Mary finished off her talented young opponent, Laura McCarthy (Muskerry), on the 16th for a 4 and 2 victory.
Tomorrow’s final is sure to a tightly fought affair with both players in top form and looking to win the championship for the first time in their careers.
The final of the Ita Wallace (Plate) Championship, was won by Ailish Thompson (Douglas) who fought back from three down after only three holes against Violet McBride (Belvoir Park) to square the match after the 12th and win the day with a par on the 18th.
Tuesday's results:
CHAMPIONSHIP
Quarter-finals
Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell) bt Catherine Tucker (Limerick) 3 and 1.
Niamh Kitching (Claremorris) bt Caoimhe Quinn (Dungannon) 4 and 3.
Mary Dowling (New Ross) bt Karen O'Neill (Douglas) 3 and 2.
Laura McCarthy (Muskerry) bt Victoria Bradshaw (Bangor) 3 and 2.
Semi-finals
Lisa Maguire bt Niamh Kitching 4 and 3.
Mary Dowling bt Laura McCarthy 4 and 2.

ITA WALLACE (Plate) CHAMPIONSHIP
Semi-finals
Ailish Thompson (Douglas) bt Doireann Carney (Galway) 2 and 1.
Violet McBride (Belvoir Park) bt Julie Coyne (Youghal) 5 and 4.
Final
Ailish Thompson bt Violet McBride 1 hole.

Wind produces some extraordinary scoring at Southernes

Out in 45, Home in 31 ... it's a game

of two halves for Pamela Pretswell!

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
The southwesterly half-gale - or maybe it was a full-gale - whipping in off the Solway Firth wreaked havoc in the first qualifying round of the Scottish women's amateur championship over the Southerness links this morning.
But where's there a will, there's a way and Pamela Pretswell, prevented until now from making her debut in the championship by first school and then Glasgow University exams, went to the top of the class with a remarkable scorecard which added up to 76, three over but, in the very windy conditions, a brilliant effort.
Pamela, recent winner of the West of Scotland title and, last year, the Swiss women's open amateur championship, took a while to get to terms with the wind. She had a triple bogey 7 at the first and then four bogeys before she had a double bogey at the sixth. Her first par figure amd at the seventh - and then she promptly bogeyed the next.
But, it was at the long ninth that the Pretswell rags-to-riches golfing transformation took pace.
She covered her last 10 holes in one eagle (at the long 16th), six birdies (at the long ninth, short 10th, 12th, long 13th, 14th and long 18th). Only one blemish, a bogey at the 17th.
All that added up to nine over par for the first nine holes and six under par for the second nine.
And that just about summed up a day of tribulations for every single player in the field of 80, whether they finished the day in the pole position or at the other end of the piile.
Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle) used her strength to birdie four of the par-5 holes to salvage a second-placed 77 after being four over par after only five holes. She had double bogeys at the second and the 11th in halves of 39 and 38.
Kelsey ran up a quintuple bogey 9 at the first hole but managed to finish in 78, which represents a great comeback from a start which reminds me of the competitor in one Scottish men's amateur championship a few years back. He played only one hole and had such an astronomical score at it, that he quit and walked back to the clubhouse instead of on to the second tee.
But the Scottish Under-21 champion from Nairn Dunbar is made of sterner stuff than that, even though she dropped more shots at the short fourth and short seventh on her way to six-over-par 42 to the turn. But she came home with a wet sail as they say in nautical terms, birdieing the 13th and 16th and having only one bogey, at the 17th, in one-under-36 for the second half.
But if the strength and direction of the wind is reflected in Pretswell's 45-31 and MacDonald's 42-36 halves, what are we to make of British universities champion Jane Turner (Craigielaw) turned the equation on its head and reducing the more difficult outward half to 37 shots - equalled only by last year's Clark Rosebowl winner Susan Jackson (Ladybank) - but requiring 43 blows to come home. Mind you, nine of those 43 shots were taken at one hole, the 12th!
There are 33 players with scores of 84 or better going into the second round, after which the top 32 will qualify for the match-play stages.
There is always a play-off to determine the precise number of 32 and using the old golfing lore of doubling 84 and adding 1, that suggests that 169 will be the total of those involved in the play-off.
The weather forecast is not much better than it was today, perhaps the wind dropping by several knots but still blowing.

Victoria Bradshaw topples champion

Leona Maguire in second round

Leona Maguire (Slieve Russell), pictured right, the reigning champion and winner in recent weeks of the French Under-21 and Scottish women’s open titles, was sensationally beaten in the second round of the match-play stages of the Lancome Irish close women’s championship at Fota Island Golf Resort near Cork today.
Victoria Bradshaw (Bangor), herself only 19, claimed the most notable “scalp”of her golfing career, beating the 14-year-old from Cavan with a birdie at the 20th in a classic match-play tie.
But the other half of the talented twins, leading qualifier Lisa Maguire, is through to the last eight in which she will play Catherine Tucker (Limerick).
Lisa beat past champion Karen Delaney (Carlow) 5 and 4 while Catherine had a tighter affair against Patrict Delaney (Birr) but held her nerve to win by one hole.
Niamh Kitching (Claremorris) was one down after nine holes against youngster Sarah Helly from Enniscrone but capped a very good comeback by birdieing the 15th and won on the next green.
Niamh will now play Caoimhe Quinn (Dungannon) who beat local favourite Gillian O'Leary at the 19th. Gillian, one up playing 18, ran into a spot of bother and lost the hole and also the match at the 19th.
Karen O'Neill (Douglas) knocked out 2004 champion Deirdre Smith (Co. Louth) with an impressive 4 and 3 win.
No 3 seed Mary Dowling (New Ross) survived a scare after being two up with three to play against Tara Gribben (Warrenpoint), Mary lost the 16th and 17th but got a fine up and down to get a winning par at the 18th.
Long-hitter Laura McCarthy defeated Sue Phillips to earn herself a crack at the giant-killing Victoria Bradshaw.

Scottish women's amateur championship preview

SOUTHERNESS – WHERE THE WINDS BLOW,

LIKELY TO BE SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Competitors in this week’s 95th Scottish women’s amateur golf championship at Southerness would not have learned much from practice rounds today in periodic lashing rain and a howling southwesterly wind blowing off the Solway Firth.
Except that links golf in these conditions – which are forecast to stay around at least for for the Tuesday-Wednesday stroke-play qualifying rounds – is about the survival of the fittest and scorecard damage limitation … and remembering that everyone else will be struggling to get pars.
The absence of Curtis Cup 16-year-old Carly Booth, last year’s Scottish Under-18 girls champion, is a blow if only in terms of focusing public interest in the championship.
To many “outsiders,” Carly is the only Scottish female amateur golf name and face they recognise from the newspaper and magazine coverage she has received from an early age.
Which is most unfair on the likes of Stirling University Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar), the Scottish Under-21 champion, St Rule Trophy winner last year Kyle Walker (Buchanan Castle), Glasgow University student Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle), who won the Swiss women’s open amateur title against a very strong Continental field last summer, Fife champion Louise Kenney (Pitreavie), British universities title-winner Jane Turner (Craigielaw) to name just a handful.
Unlike the “old days,” when Belle Robertson (Dunaverty) was able to win this title five times over a 21-year span (1965 to 1986), championship winners are liable to turn pro before they can defend as last year’s Lossiemouth winner, Michele Thomson (McDonald Ellon), Jenna Wilson (Strathaven), Heather Stirling (Bridge of Allan), Linzi Morton (Tulliallan), Lynn Kenny (Dunblane) have done in recent years.
Anne Laing (Vale of Leven), champion in 1996, 2001 and 2004 and four times a beaten finalist, Elaine Moffat (St Regulus) (1998), Martine Pow (Selkirk) are the only former title-holders in the field reduced to 82 with the withdrawal of local player Susan Dickie (Lochmaben) who is ill.
So who’s going to win? Not even the qualifying rounds are guaranteed to give a strong pointer in that direction. Kelsey MacDonald earned the No 1 status in the 32 match-play qualifiers 12 months ago – and then was toppled in the first round by her good friend, Sammy Vass from Tain.
Kelsey, if she plays as well as she did in finishing second to the Irish wonder twin Leona Maguire in the “Helen Holm” at Troon, is the one they all have to beat.
Failing that, keep an eye on the two beaten semi-finalists from last year – Kylie Walker and Laura Murray (Alford).
Kylie, if she can keep her long drives out of the heather, has a definite chance while Laura, beaten at the 20th, gave champion-to-be Michele Thomson her toughest test in last year’s championship.
+Handicaps don’t come into play in the Scottish women’s championship but worth pointing out there seven players with +ratings in this week’s field: Kelsey MacDonald +3, Kylie Walker +3, Pamela Pretswell +2, Martine Pow +2, Katy McNicoll (Carnousitie) +1, Emily Ogilvy (Auchterarder) +1, Louise Kenney +1.

NAME THE SOUTHERNESS HOLES ... THAT'S
ANOTHER CHALLENGE FOR PLAYERS

Southerness Golf Club must be one of the few golf clubs of their standing not to have names given to their holes.
The SLGA are about to change all that! They are running a competition among the players to come up with "appropriate" names for the holes and there will be some kind of prize or prizes at the end of the week.
That is not to say Southerness Golf Club will act upon the suggestions.
If they have not this far with 18 nameless holes, they are unlikely to change now!

LIVE SCORING SERVICE FROM SLGA

The SLGA are to run a live scoring service from Southerness, starting with the Tuesday-Wednesday qualifying rounds. Log on to http://www.slga.co.uk/ for updates every three holes on how the players are progressing.
It was a service that went down very well at the "Helen Holm," so much so that on the Sunday afternoon so many "hits" were received that the computer system could not cope and "crashed" for a spell.

Tegan wins Stableford at Dunecht House

PAUL LAWRIE FOUNDATION

DUNECHT HOUSE STABLEFORD

Report by Murray Carnie
Twenty six competitors took part on Sunday, under blue skies and strong breeze, which did not prevent a lot of players scoring well. It was the girls who stole the show with three of them finishing in the top five.
Winner was Tegan Seivwright ( Deeside), pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, a graduate out of our flag tour, with an excellent 49 points. Close behind was nine year old Shannon Mc William (Aboyne) who racked up 47 points. Darren Smith( Inverurie) came in 3rd place with 44 points to pip Connor Prudence (Turriff) on a better inward half.
Zoe Marr rounded off an excellent day for the girls when she finished in fifth place with 40 points.
Many thanks to all the members at Dunecht House, especially Brian Elrick, who turned out in large numbers to assist in the running of this event. The course and in particular the greens were in fantastic condition for this time of year.

It's Norway's Day! Marianne Skarpnord's

first win as a pro in Ladies Swiss Open

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Norway’s Marianne Skarpnord, a former British girls' open champion, claimed her first professional career victory in the Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open with a final round of 70 at Golf Gerre Losone today.
The 23-year-old, starting her fifth season on the Ladies European Tour, collected a €78,750 winner's cheque when her 16-under-par total of 276 left her one stroke clear of England’s Melissa Reid, who also shot 70.
Australian Karen Lunn (69) finished in third place on 278, 14-under-par, after she chipped in for eagle at the 18th hole.
A third round of 66 on Saturday had given Skarpnord a one-stroke lead entering the final round however it was a day of fluctuating fortunes which came down to the last putt on the final hole.
Melissa Reid, who started the day in second on 12-under, grabbed a one shot lead with an eagle at the 469-yard par-three third hole.
Skarpnord birdied the fifth to draw level on 14-under before both players birdied the par-five sixth. With her third birdie in a row at the seventh the Norwegian regained the outright lead. However, she fell one behind after a three-putt bogey at the ninth, where Reid struck an iron to within two feet for a birdie three.
When Reid reached the turn in 32 she was a stroke ahead of the Norwegian, but suddenly her game unraveled as she dropped three shots in as many holes from the 11th. After a birdie at the 16th, Skarpnord was three ahead, but Reid was back in the hunt after a birdie at the 17th hole.
Marianne and her boyfriend/caddie, Petter

Both players hit superb second shots to the green on the par-five 18th but it took three putts for Skarpnord to secure the victory. Reid was forced to settle for her fourth runner-up spot in two seasons but is determined to make her breakthrough soon.
Skarpnord celebrated her win – and Norway’s national day - after friends stormed the 18th green and sprayed her with champagne.
“To get a win this early in the season is just great and now I can play Evian,” she said. “Melissa and I both played well. We were even or one shot up, one shot down the whole round. She just missed a few putts around 13, 14, or something. I made a birdie on 16.
"It was hard work at the end, three-putting there. The first putt I didn’t think was so fast but it was. I thought it didn’t matter if I make it or not, I can just put it close.”
With season’s earnings of €88,414.68, Skarpnord now leads the LET’s official 2009 Henderson Money List and earned 30 Solheim Cup points, taking her to eighth position on the European standings.
The Ladies European Tour now moves to Munich for the HypoVereinsbank Ladies German Open, presented by Audi, at Golfpark Gut Hausern. Courtesy of the sponsor, Skarpnord was one of the lucky players to be whisked straight to Germany in an Audi Q7.
COLIN FARQUHARSON'S SCOTSWATCH
A top 20 finish in her debut on the Ladies European Tour - what a start for Krystle Caithness who, like Michele Thomson, another LET rookie, was playing at Curtis Cup amateur level just about 12 months ago. Michele tied for 35th place on her first pro appearance on the Continent, another confidence-boosting performance.
Krystle had rounds of 71, 75, 69 and 71 for a six-under-par total of 286 over the par-73 track to earn 6864 Euros.
Michele shot 73, 73, 73 and 72 for 291 to collect 4016 Euros.
Pamela Feggans from Ayrshire, another LET rookie, tied for 44th place on 293 and earned 2940 Euros.

It's the Maguire twins again! Nos 1 and

2 seeds for Irish closed championship

It's on the cards that the 14-year-old Maguire twins, Lisa and Leona, will meet in Wednesday's final of the Lancome Irish women's closed championship at Fota Island Golf Resort, near Cork ... just as they did in last year's final.
For the second year in a row, Lisa has won the Leitrim Cup as the leading qualifier. She lost to Leona in last year's final.
In recent weeks, the spotlight has been on Leona who won the French Under-21 title, the Helen Holm Scottish women's open stroke-play at Troon and the Woodenbridge Scratch Cup.
But these highly competitive siblings spark off each other and Lisa raised her game to push Leona into second place by the end of the 36-hole qualifying test over the weekend.
Lisa had a 72 today for a two-under-par total of 146 over the par-74 track. Leona had a 73 for 147. They were the only two players to return 36-hole sub-par totals and as Nos 1 and 2 seeds they automatically go into opposite halves of the match-play draw.
Mary Dowling (New Ross) did extremely well to match Lisa's 72 and shared the honour of producing the Sunday best.
Mary, who had a first-round 76, is third seed on 148 and is seeded to meet Leona in the semi-finals.
