DURAMED FUTURES TOUR REPORT

Brenda from Belfast up with leaders

with a 70 on a toasty Texas day

By LISA D MICKEY
lisa@duramedfuturestour.com
SAN ANTONIO, Texas. - Six players jammed the top of the leaderboard after the first round of the inaugural Texas Hill Country Classic.
On a sunny and toasty Texas day, the sextet of Lindsey Bergeon of Sarasota, Fla., Sofie Andersson of Angelholm, Sweden, Jenny Gleason of Clearwater, Fla., Janice Olivencia of Caguas, Puerto Rico, Haeji Kang of Seoul, South Korea, and Allison Hanna-Williams of Portland, Ore., shared the lead after 18 holes with a score of three-under-par 69 at The Dominion Country Club.
Bergeon was the first to crack 70 for the lead this morning and made up with her putter what she lacked off the tee. Needing only 24 putts, the self-described "short hitter" capitalized on her secondary shots and converted for birdies with the flat stick.
"I am short off the tee, so I had a lot of long irons and fairway woods, but I hit them close," said the rookie, who was a four-time All-American at Florida Southern College. "And my birdie putts were all within 10 feet."
The highlight in the rookie's round was an eagle-2 on the par-4 sixth hole. She hit driver on the 370-yard hole, then used a 7-iron from 138 yards to watch the ball take two hops and disappear into the cup, holing out for the eagle.
Andersson, who has wrestled with her driver for weeks, visited a San Antonio Edwin Watts store on Monday and spent nearly two hours in the store hitting drivers on their launch monitor. When she walked out, it was with the purchase of an Adams Golf Speedline driver in her hand, which she credited today for a confidence boost off the tee.
"I had two O.B.s [out-of-bounds shots] in the last few tournaments and I needed something new mentally and physically," said Andersson, who still had a round that included eight birdies, two double-bogeys and one bogey. "Even today, after each of the double-bogeys, I came right back with two birdies, so it feels great to shoot a number like that."
Former LPGA Tour member Jenny Gleason hit 16 greens today and carded four birdies and one bogey for her share of the lead. A two-time winner on the Duramed FUTURES Tour, the Floridian capitalized on her putting proficiency on Bermuda-grass greens.
So did Kang, 18, who played most of her junior golf in hot and sunny Australia before arriving in the United States as a rookie last year. Kang, a winner on the 2008 Duramed FUTURES Tour, pounced on the longer holes, playing three under on three of the course's four par-5 holes.
"My wedges were really good today," said Kang, an LPGA Tour member who has played in three LPGA tournaments this year while bouncing back and forth between the LPGA and Duramed FUTURES Tour. "I just have to play my normal golf [on Saturday] because if I think I'm a leader, it makes me nervous."
While Kang felt at home in the heat, Olivencia, a University of Texas graduate and resident of Austin, Texas, was all smiles after her four-birdie, one-bogey performance today.
"It just feels like home," said Olivenica, who needed only 27 putts today. "I'm excited that I got a good round in. I've been working hard for this. It just takes patience."
And patient is what Hanna-Williams has been ever since moving on to the LPGA Tour following her first season on the Duramed FUTURES Tour in 2004 right out of Ohio State University. A solid collegiate player, Hanna-Williams has spent the last four years laboring on the LPGA, waiting to win.
"These greens are true and I'm just trying to expect to make my birdie putts," said Hanna-Williams, who carded five birdies and two bogeys in today's first round. "You have to have that confidence on these putts because that's what the best players in the world do."
Five players are tied one shot back at two-under-par 70. They are: Jennifer Ackerson of Dallas, Brenda McLarnon (pictured above) from Belfast, Dana Ford of Indianapolis, Misun Cho of Cheongju, South Korea, and Aimee Cho of Orlando, Fla.
A total of 25 players finished at even-par 72 or better in Friday's first round of the $125,000 event.

MIDLOTHIAN COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Top seed Louise topped by Gabrielle

MacDonald in quarter-finals

Top seed Louise Fraser (Kingsknowe) was toppled in the quarter-finals of the Midlothian women’s county golf championship at Newbattle this afternoon.
She was beaten on the 18th green by teenager Gabrielle MacDonald (Craigielaw) who went round in an approximate level par.

Marshall, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, had an epic match against Claire McDonald (Gullane Ladies), the No 4 seed, which went to the 21st hole before Karen won. Karen followed that up by disposing of the No 5 seed, Kirsten Blackwood (Craigmillar Park) by 2 and 1.
The second semi-final on Sunday morning will feature two Mortonhall members, No. 6 seed Claire Hargan, bidding to win the county title for a sixth time in the past seven years, and youngster Rachael Watton, the No 2 qualifier, who had a great match in beating Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe) by one hole in the quarter-finals. Teenager Hannah Barwood to

defend English women's title

Teenager Hannah Barwood, pictured left by Cal Carson Golf Agency in action during last weekend's "Helen Holm" tournament at Troon, will defend her title when the English women’s close championship is played at Lindrick in Yorkshire from May 12-16.
Hannah, from Knowle in Gloucestershire, was 17-years-old and one of the youngest-ever English champions when she won the 2008 title at another Yorkshire course, Ganton.
This year, another host of youngsters will be among the 79 competitors challenging for the title. The field includes 11 players aged under 18, together with many more in their late teens and early 20s.
The youngest competitor is 14-year-old Emily Taylor of Royal Lytham & St Annes while Lindrick’s two representatives include 15-year-old Sophie Godley. Both girls are members of the English Women’s Golf Association Select North squad.
Altogether there will be 13 Yorkshire players and two of them – Emma Brown (Malton and Norton) and Naomi Edwards (Ganton) – are past winners of this championship.
Naomi holds the lowest handicap in the field. She plays off plus-four and will be joined by another 13 players who boast plus-handicaps, while seven more are off scratch.
Naomi is one of several England internationals and girl internationals – and a number of them are clearly in-form as the championship approaches. Defending champion Hannah Barwood won the U21 title at the Faldo Series Asia Final in China; Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) is the new French open U18 champion; and Charlotte Ellis (Minchinhampton) won the Hampshire Rose and was leading amateur in the Roehampton Gold Cup.
The championship has attracted the support of two Nottingham-based companies. Beissbarth UK, the automotive service equipment specialists, will sponsor the scoreboard, provided by Golftext. Weavers, the independent wine merchants, will sponsor the English Women’s Golf Association reception held during the championship.
Lindrick Golf Club is regarded as one of Yorkshire’s finest championship courses and has hosted the Ryder Cup and the Curtis Cup among many other events, including the Ladies’ British Open, the English County Finals and the Ladies’ British Amateur.
For this event, the ladies’ course has been lengthened by 586yd to 6358yd. It has a par of 72. All competitors will play 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying before the top 32 players go forward to the match-play knock-out stages. The final will be played on the morning of Saturday, May 16.

Top Welsh prospect Ben Enoch

killed in car accident

just after 19th birthday

Welsh golf has reacted with shock to the tragic news of the death in a car accident of Wales international Ben Enoch.
The 19-year-old Walker Cup squad member was on his way from his Truro home to Lancashire for the Lytham Trophy when his Peugeot crashed into a trailer at Whitchurch, Herefordshire.
Welsh Golf Union Chief executive Richard Dixon summed up the feelings by saying, “Everyone is devastated by the news. Our thoughts are with the family at this terribly sad time.
“Ben was one of the most promising golfers in Wales, a bright and vibrant personality in our teams.
“He had a chance of getting into the Walker Cup team this season, such was his talent, and would surely have represented Great Britain and Ireland at some stage before enjoying a career in professional golf.
“For this accident to happen just a few days after his 19th birthday is heartbreaking. He had such a bright future ahead of him.”
Enoch was runner-up in the Welsh Amateur Championship last summer and had a strong start to this season, challenging in all events.
He was due to go to the United States later in the year to take up a golf scholarship at East Tennessee university, where his older brother Rhys is already a student. Rhys is also a Wales international golfer.
Last summer Ben was part of the Great Britain and Ireland Boys team which won the Jacques Leglise Trophy against the continent of Europe. He also won the Clwyd Amateur last season.
Ben Enoch was based in Truro and attended Truro College, but represented the Wales Boys teams in 2006 and 2007, representing the Wales senior team in 2008 and 2009.

Cecilia Cho (14) beats Lydia Ko (12) in youngest

ever final of New Zealand women's amateur

Auckland 14-year-old Cecilia Cho became the second youngest player to win the women’s honours at the Lion Foundation New Zealand Amateur golf championships in Auckland this week.
She held off the challenge over 36 holes from 12-year-old Lydia Ko (Pupuke) in what proved the youngest finalists in the 115-year history of the amateur championship, at Titirangi Golf Club.
Western Australia’s Matt Jager, 20, proved too strong for South Africa’s Nicol van Wyk to take out the men’s title 6 and 5, also over 36 holes, for the best win of his young career.
Cho, four-up after 18 holes, held off a brief comeback from Ko to win 4 and 3. The South Island Amateur champion was three weeks and three days older than Auckland’s Larissa Eruera was when she won the amateur title in 2006.
While there was widespread interest in the performance of Ko, the North Island Amateur champion, in her quest to become the youngest ever winner, Cho used a simple game plan to win the amateur crown.
“My plan was to keep things simple. I wanted to keep the ball in play on the fairways,” Cho said. “I just kept on getting pars and being consistent. Lydia made some mistakes and that gave me a good lead.
“I was really nervous today and couldn’t really see the ball on the first tee. I didn’t sleep very well last night.
“It was my goal to win this and now I have achieved it. I can now go on with golf,” said Cho who is currently seeking citizenship that would enable her to represent New Zealand in the near future.
She was four up after just seven holes and from that point did not relinquish her grip on the match, being flat with the card after her first round. Ko won three in a row in the middle of the afternoon round but Cho birdied the 33rd hole to seal the title.
Ko, who turned 12 last Friday, impressed many with her coach Guy Wilson predicting a big future.
“The sky’s the limit really for Lydia. As long as the interest remains and she can keep developing, then she has a huge future in the game.”
She hit the ball well today but missed numerous chances on the greens to fight her way back into the match.
Jager, who won a major tournament in Argentina last summer, was in complete control of the men's final, adding touch on the greens to the pure ball-striking that he has produced during the tournament.
He was six up after 15 holes with an eagle and four birdies before going to the break at four up. He pushed back out to a six-hole advantage after 24 holes and never allowed the steady South African back into the match.
“I had not played the 16th and 17th well all week so it was good that I did not have to play it again this afternoon,” the 20 year old said. “I hit the ball really well tee to green right through the tournament. Today was the best I have putted in a long, long time which proved the difference. This is a real highlight for me.”
Results of 36-hole finals:
Lion Foundation New Zealand Amateur Championships, Titirangi GC:
Women:
Cecilia Cho (Pakuranga) bt Lydia Ko (Pupuke) 4 and 3 (Cho led 4-up after 18).
Men: Matt Jager (Australia) bt Nicol van Wyk (South Africa) 6 and 5 (Jager led 4-up after 18 holes).

Pamela Pretswell backmarker at Prestwick on Sunday

West of Scotland championship

attracts largest entry for years

Sunday's West of Scotland women's (closed) amateur championship, to be hosted by Prestwick Golf Club, has attracted its largest entry for many years - some 48 players, all with handicaps of 10 and under.
Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) is unable to defend the title as she is being sent by the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association to play in the Welsh women's open amateur stroke-play at Royal Porthcawl this weekend.
The backmarker in the field with +2 of a handicap is Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle), pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency during the weekend "Helen Holm" tournament, holder of the Swiss women's amateur title, and she will have strong competition from former Scottish champion Anne Laing (Vale of Leven), still a scratch player, Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze), Sara Bishop (Windyhill) and Susan Wood (Drumpellier) to name but four.
The West of Scotland Ladies County Golf Association has presented a new team trophy for which each county in the West District will nominate three players (under-18 years) from whom the best two scores will count in each round.
Ayrshire are running this year's West championship.
+We hope to have scores and pictures from the championship on this website on Sunday evening.

Wind-tamer Michael Stewart

scores first US college win

Michael Stewart, last year's Scottish boys' match-play champion from Troon, has scored his first win near the end of his first year as a golf scholarship student at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City.
Irvine-born Stewart, 19, had rounds of 72, 70 and 71 for a three-under-par total of 213 to come from behind over the final round and win the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship by one stroke at Keith Hills Country Club, Buies Creek in North Carolina.
Stewart was lying 10th going into the final day when the wind got up to 25 to 30mph with even stronger gusts. The Scot's one-under-par 71 in those codnitions over a 6819yd course saw him rocket up to the pole position as his rivals struggled to cope.
"I guess the weather suited me, being that I'm from Scotland," said Stewart. "The other guys don't normally play in a wind like that. I just tried to stay patient, keep my composure and try to manufacture shots under the wind. I knew that chances to score would come if I stayed patient." Out in two-over-par 38, Stewart came storming home in three-under-par 33, brilliant scoring in the conditions.
East Tennessee State University head coach Fred Warren said: "Michael played a really great round of golf on the last day. The wind almost blew everybody else off the course, but not Michael. His performance was a very big bright spot for me in what was not a very good performance by the team as a whole."
East Tennessee State finished fourth of 11 in the team event and victories by teams are rated more highly, certainly by the college coaches, than individual successes.
Warren has been hoping that Stewart will develop into a team-leading player to fill the gap left by Edinburgh-born former Walker Cup player Rhys Davies who starred for East Tennessee State University for four years. The Scot is certainly going that way.
Former British boys' champion Jordan Findlay from Fraserburgh, who is coming up to the end of his four-year stay at East Tennessee State University, also played well in the last-day wind for a 74, a score beaten only by Stewart and a handful of others, but his earlier rounds of 81 and 74 added up to a total of 229, which earned the Buchan player only a share of 41st place in a field of 55.

Harriet's third and final round of 70 was the best by anyone in the championship but earlier rounds of 78 and 76 meant she had left herself too much ground to make up.
Her total of 224 over the par-72, 6131yd course left her five shots behind Susannah Aboff who scores 72, 75 and 72 for three-over-par 219.
Claire Sheldon (Harvard) finished third on 224 with scores of 77, 73 and 75.
Harvard (904) won the team event ahead of Yale (906) with Princeton (909) third in the field of seven teams.

Even Ashley and Kendall were nine-over-par for the tournament, Ashley scoring 72, 73 and 80 and Kendall 76, 73 and 76.

Solheim Cup format switch will put

four-balls ahead of foursomes

Solheim Cup captains Beth Daniel of the United States and Alison Nicholas of Europe have agreed to switch the playing format for the first two days of this year's match at Sugar Grove, Illinois.
The opening session on both days will now feature four-balls, where each team member plays her own ball, followed by alternate-shot foursomes in the afternoon, the LPGA said Tuesday.
"I always felt as a player that we would see better golf if you played your own ball in the morning and then played alternate shot in the afternoon," Daniel said in a statement. "As a captain, you see more golf out of your players in the morning to help you make your picks in the afternoon. Another positive is that fans on the first tee in the morning see four players tee off in a group instead of just two."
"The host captain has the choice of whether to play the foursomes or four-ball first but in fact, switching the order has been considered by the European side before," Nicholas said. "We are all happy with the decision that has been made."
The 11th Solheim Cup will be played at Rich Harvest Farms from August 21-23 when Europe, beaten 16-12 in Sweden in 2007, will be looking for its first win on American soil in the biennial competition.
The Americans lead 7-3 in the series, which is the women's equivalent of the men's Ryder Cup.

SLGA need volunteers to run

live scoring service from

"Scottish" at Southerness

The Scottish Ladies Golfing Association introduced a "live scoring" service on its website - http://www.slga.co.uk/ - from the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur championship at Troon last weekend.
It was so successful that during the final round on Sunday over Royal Troon, the website "crashed" because it was overloaded with thousands of people logging on or trying to log on to find out who was winning.
It is believed that many of the "hits" came from Ireland as
the 14-year-old Maguire twins, Leona (the ultimate winner) and Lisa (who finished joint third) were in contention. There would also have been many from Scotland as Nairn Dunbar's Kelsey MacDonald was actually leading at one point of the final round before finishing second.
Encouraged by the response, the SLGA now plan to run a live scoring website service from the Scottish women's amateur championship at Southerness Golf Club on the Solway Firth from May 19 to 23.
The only snag is that live-scoring is a labour-intensive operation. The SLGA need volunteers they can send out onto the course to radio back to the clubhouse all the scores every three holes during the two qualifying rounds.
"We need as many as 13 volunteers, so that they can get regular breaks during the day. It might be more difficult to get as many down at Southerness than it was from the Troon area where the population is bigger and possibily more interested in golf," said Mrs Fiona Farquharson (pictured above by Cal Carson Golfing Agency), the SLGA's Tournament Officer.
"We were delighted with the way the website live scoring went at our first attempt. The weather and the Troon links terrain meant that the radio reception for messages coming in from our volunteers out on the course caused us a few problems but it was well worth it.
"At Southerness, we plan to do live scoring during the Tuesday-Wednesday stroke-playing qualifying rounds, have a break, and then resume the service from the later stages of the match-play on Friday and the 18-hole final on the Saturday morning."
Anyone who wants to volunteer should telephone the SLGA headquarters in Perth at 01738 442357 or send an E-mail to secretary@slga.co.uk

Murray Carnie and Paul Lawrie, a busy season ahead on the junior golf front (Cal Carson Golf Agency image).

Paul Lawrie junior events tee off

at Peterculter this Sunday

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

Colin@scottishgolfview.com
The Paul Lawrie Junior Golf Programme becomes three dimensional this season with the Junior Jug taking in the national scene and 18-hole Stableford competitions being added to the Aberdeenshire-only Flag events which have been run for the past three years.
There will be 13 Flag events at Aberdeenshire venues from Aboyne to Westhill, all aimed at getting boys and girls started playing golf competitively. This is the fourth year of these non-handicap competitions in which the players stop after they have played 36 strokes. The winners are those who have completed the most holes or parts of holes after they have played their 36th stroke.
The Stableford events are for Under-15 year olds - boys or girls - with the only stipulation that they must have an official handicap to participate.
The majority of the Flag and Stableford events will be run at the same venues, starting with Peterculter Golf Club on Sunday.
"We couldn't attempt a programme of this size without the goodwill of the golf clubs in providing courtesy tee times at weekends on their courses. They've been great," said Murray Carnie, the Paul Lawrie Foundation's chief organiser.

Maguires are not the only wonder kids making golfing headlines

New Zealand women's open amateur final

is between a 12 year old & a 14-year-old!

Hard on the heels of the astonishing performance of the 14-year-old Maguire twins in the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur championship - Leona won the title, sister Lisa was joint third - comes news from Down Under of another wonder golf girl ...
Twelve-year-old Lydia Ko, she had her birthday last Friday, has the opportunity to create history when she contests the final of the New Zealand women's amateur golf championship in Auckland on Tuesday.
Ko would become the youngest winner of the amateur championship and takes on 14-year-old Cecilia Cho (Pakuranga) in the youngest-ever final pairing in the event's 115-year history.
Cho, the South Island amateur champion, beat Australia's Rebecca Flood 5 and 4 in one semi-final while Ko, the North Island champion, held off the challenge from Titirangi's Tania Tare to win 2 and 1.
South Africa's Nicol van Wyk will take on Australia's Matt Jager in the men's final after a dramatic afternoon. Van Wyk, who went to the 19th to beat off compatriot Dean O'Riley in the quarter-final, then edged the world No 1 Scott Arnold (Australia) at the 21st hole in the semi-final.

Brenda from Belfast dreading showing

of "dumbest moment" on TV show

Duramed FuturesTour member Brenda McLarnon from Belfast of Belfast is already apologising for the second instalment of the Golf Channel's "Big Break Prince Edward Island.”
And while she can't divulge what she is so worried about until the show has aired, McLarnon, pictured, says it's bad enough that she "wants to hide."
"I'm absolutely petrified about Monday's show because I know what I did and it's about the dumbest moment I've ever had in my golf life," she said. "I was just stupid."
McLarnon, along with fellow Tour members and "Big Breakers" Caroline Larsson of Stockholm, Sweden, and Gerina Mendoza from Roswell, New Mexico, experienced their first days as new TV cast members last week in Brownsville, Texas, following last Monday's premiere.
What followed for Mendoza were more than 30 Facebook requests and even a request from her little sister for an interview as the subject of her school research paper on "someone famous."
"A lot of the stuff she wanted to know she could have just asked our mom," said Mendoza. "But we had our interview."
Mendoza says she can't really remember the challenges in the show. After all, the series was filmed over a period of two weeks last September and the cast members have been sworn to secrecy by legal (and million-dollar) documents to not breach the outcome of the show.
"It still seems like a dream," added Mendoza. "It's kind of crazy to come back home and it's airing and now everybody is reacting to the show."
Larsson says she signed more autographs last week in Brownsville than she has signed anywhere else all season, largely as a response to last week's premiere. A half-dozen young boys trailed the Swede last week, patiently waiting to meet her and talk about the show.
"I really was surprised that more people watch the Big Break than I thought," she said. "Last week, one of our tournament volunteer cart drivers came up to me and said, 'I saw you last Monday,' and I was like, 'Really? Where?' and she said, 'On the Big Break.' It was like she knew me. I guess people feel like they do."
But McLarnon, ever self-critical, was ranting last week about her performance. She watched the first episode with her parents, who flew over from Ireland to see the show (since it is not aired in Belfast).
"I just can't believe how much I talk," McLarnon said. "It's shocking."
"And I am huge (overweight) on TV," she continued. "I'm never letting them film me from behind again."
One of the Duramed Futures Tour's true characters who is known for her spicy language, Brenda McLarnon says she knows she's going to disappoint some people in this week's show.
"The crew filming this show asked me questions to get me going and they filled me with Bud Light," McLarnon quipped. "Some people have told me they're proud of me for not cursing. All I can say is, just stay tuned."

in Irish Schoolgirls' team championships

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Loreto College, Cavan's twin stars Leona and Lisa Maguire successfully defended their Irish Schoolgirls' Senior Cup title at Edmondstown Golf Club today.
The 14-year-old pair won the event by a margin of 23 Stableford points from Dublin's Teresian School, in spite of having returned home late on Sunday evening from Scotland, following Leona’s win and Lisa’s third place at the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Troon.
In setting a new women' course record of level-par 72, Lisa had five birdies - at the second, fifth, seventh, 11th and 18th - while double bogeys at the 13th and 17th prevented the perfect round. Meanwhile sister Leona birdied the eighth, 12th and 17th on her way to a fine 73.

'Helen Holm' placings give Mary

McKenna Vagliano Trophy boost

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Great Britain & Ireland’s Vagliano Trophy biennial nine-woman team contest against the holders, the Continent of Europe, is still more than 11 weeks away but skipper Mary McKenna is wasting no time in getting down to brass tacks for the Hamburg match on July 24 and 25.
Last week she made a reconnaissance trip to the German course along with Ladies Golf Union staff man Fraser Munro. They were having a look at the lie of the land, the clubhouse and hotel facilities, etc.
“It’s a nice course, reminded me a lot of Sunningdale,” said Mary who had barely flown back from Hamburg when up she popped at Troon for the three-day Helen Holm Scottish women’s open amateur stroke-play championship.
McKenna was obviously delighted with the spectacular winning debut in the event of 14-year-old Leona Maguire (Slieve Russell) and also the close-up third finish achieved by her twin sister Lisa.
“Four of the final top five were named some time ago in the preliminary GB&I squad for the Vagliano Trophy match,” said Mary. “So, obviously I’m very pleased with that and another five from the squad finished there or thereabouts in the top 20.”
The Maguire twins’ golfing CVs are outstanding and, even though they are only 14, they can hardly be kept out of the line-up for the Vagliano Trophy match ... "If they are good enough, then they are old enough," is an old adage about selecting youngsters for adult representative teams in any sport.
Scottish Under-21 champion Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) led for a few holes during the final round over Royal Troon before finishing second to Leona. Whether or not she succeeds Michele Thomson as Scottish women’s amateur champion at Southerness next month, Kelsey is looking good for a Vagliano Trophy place.
Ireland’s Niamh Kitching’s selection prospects took a knock when she failed to survive the 36-hole cut at Troon but it is worth remembering that Michele Thomson suffered a similar fate 12 months ago and went on to (a) win the Scottish title and (b) be selected for the Curtis Cup match at the Old Course.
Backing up the Maguire girls in the top five on Sunday was Danielle McVeigh (Royal County Down), a former world universities champion who played the American college circuit for two or three years. A six-footer, Danielle has a presence that must help her in match-play ties.
England’s Naomi Edwards (Ganton) and Rhian Wyn Thomas (Vale of Glamorgan) finished ninth and 11th in the “Helen Holm” and must also be in contention.
The LGU selectors have stressed that players not named in the preliminary squad can win team places by showing better form than their rivals, so Tara Davies (Holyhead) and Louise Kenney (Pitreavie), sixth and seven in the final standings, have a big incentive to maintain their Troon form.
Thee are, of course, eligible players based in the United States who could reduce the number of places available to those who live and play in Britain and Ireland. Jodi Ewart (New Mexico University) and Sally Watson (David Leadbetter Golf Academy in Florida) played in last year's Curtis Cup match at the Old Course. Hannah Burke (Baylor University, Texas) is also in the LGU preliminary squad named late last year.
Two years ago, the Continent of Europe inflicted on GB&I their biggest margin of defeat in a Vagliano Trophy match. That one was over the Torrance Course at Fairmont, St Andrews. At that time, the best female amateurs in Europe were definitely mainly Continentals. Has the balance of power shifted since 2007? The scoreline at Hamburg will give the answer.

Ireland's Leona Maguire (only 14)

wins Helen Holm, twin Lisa jt 3rd

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

Begorrah! The 14-year-old Maguire twins from the Slieve Russell club in Northern Ireland lived up to their star billing on their debut appearance in the 37th Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play golf championship at Troon.
Leona finished first, two shots ahead of Scottish Under-21 champion Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar), pictured right, with Lisa Maguire sharing third place with England's Emma Brown, another shot behind.
Leona, who also won the trophy for the best performance by an under 18-year-old - she is easily the youngest ever player to have won this prestigious tournament - led from start to finish after a brilliant opening round of six-under-par 69 at Troon Portland on Friday put her three shots clear of the field.

The lead shrank to one shot on Saturday when she slipped to a two-over 77, also over Portland, but, having settled herself with a brilliant approach shot to within 18in of the flagstick at the first, she finished in style by birdieing two of the last four holes for a closing two-under-par 73 over the demaning Royal Troon links today.
That gave her a six-under-par total of 219 and another title to add to the French Under-21 girls' championship she won a couple of weeks ago and the Irish women's amateur championship in which she beat sister Lisa in the final last year.
"I'm delighted. I'd never played either of the courses before I came to Troon a few days ago but I like links golf. The weather wasn't great but I loved the tournament. I think my putting was the best part of my game over the three days. I holed a few good ones," said Leona.
Stirling University student Kelsey MacDonald raised homes of a special "Homecoming" victory – only two Scots have won the "Helen Holm" since 1992 – but it was not to be.
Kelsey finished with a one-under-par 74 over Royal Troon for a total of four-under-par 221, two shots behind the winner after Leona Maguire doubled her one-stroke lead on the 18th tee by holing a 7ft birdie putt on the last green.
Kelsey's earlier birdies at the second and fourth had actually put her in the lead for a hole or two before Leona recovered from bogeys at the fourth and ninth with birdies at two long holes – the 11th and the 15th.
"I'm just a wee bit disappointed but finishing second is easily the best I have ever done in the Helen Holm, so I have to be pleased with that," said Kelsey whose ambition is to play in the Curtis Cup match in her home town of Nairn in 2012. She has run into form at the right time with the Scottish women's amateur championship coming up next month at Southerness.
The Maguire twins are fiercely competitive siblings and no doubt Lisa needed no bigger incentive to do well in the last round than to know that her sister was leading the field.

Sure enough, Lisa birdied four holes in closing with her third successive round of 74 for three-under-par 222. A bogey 6 at the 16th cost her a share of second place with Kelsey.
Emma Brown from Malton & Norton in Yorkshire, winner of the tournament in 2004 in her maiden name of Duggleby, birdied four of the last seven holes, including the 17th and 18th for a 75 which put her on the 222 mark alongside Lisa – a great performance from a player who retired far too early from international golf.
Fife champion Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) tied for seventh place on 224 with a last round of 75 which included double bogey 5s at two Royal Troon short holes – the Postage Stamp eighth and the 17th.
Scottish universities champion Laura Murray (Alford) was in the picture at two under par for the tournament after birdieing the 10th and 11th but she dropped back to a share of 10th place on 226 with a 77 after bogeying the 14th, 15th and 17th.
Wales, represented by youngsters Tara Davies and Rhian Wyn Thomas, came through to win the team title with a total of 449 which was two ahead of France and three in front of third-placed Scotland (Kelsey MacDonald and Kylie Walker).

Unfortunate for Ireland that one of their leading players, Niamh Kitching (Claremorris) who was Leona Maguire's nominated "partner" for Ireland in the team event. Niamh just wasn't herself over the first two rounds at Troon Portland failed to beat the 36-hole cut. That meant Ireland couldn't have a three-round team total.

But, all in all, it was a great tournament for Ireland. Apart from the Maguire girls, Danielle McVeigh (Royal Co Down), the former world universities women's champion in Thailand and a player with a lot of experience of playing on the US college circuit, showed the class that could win her Vagliano Trophy honours this summer by returning a 73 today.

That was the joint best score over the Royal Troon links on a day that started and finished with rain and was very much overcast in between except for a brief blink of sunshine.

But if the weather was dull, the play certainly wasn't. Lisa Ball (Matfen Hall) and Leona Maguire were the others who had 73s. Danielle's inward half earned her the best third-round score prize and that good Sunday round saw her earn the fifth three-round scratch prize on 223, ahead of former Welsh girls champion Tara Davies (Holyhead) who had a closing 75.

Leona and Kelsey share lead with nine

holes to play ... one ahead of twin Lisa

With nine holes to play 14-year-old Leona Maguire (Slieve Russell) and Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) were locked in the lead at three under par for the tournament … only one shot ahead of Leona’s twin sister Lisa.
Leona, one shot clear of Kelsey and Emma Brown (Malton & Norton) at the start of the round at four under par, birdied the first hole after a superb approach shot to within 18inches of the flagstick.
But she bogeyed the par-5 fourth and the par-4 ninth to be out in one-over-par 38.
Kelsey birdied the long second and the long fourth to improve to five under par overall and at that moment had taken over the tournament lead.
However, the Nairn player bogeyed the seventh and eighth to fall back to three under par.
Lisa Maguire, starting the day two shots behind leader Leona and one behind Kelsey and Emma, bogeyed the third but birdied the short fifth and the seventh to get to three under par and a share of the lead … before she bogeyed the Postage Stamp short eighth to fall back to two under par for the tournament.
Emma Brown, with bogeys at the first, second and ninth, was level par at the turn.
OUTWARD HALVES (par 38):
Leona Maguire 38.
Kelsey MacDonald 37.
Lisa Maguire 37
Emma Brown 40.
