Kelsey MacDonald sharing second place with Emma Brown

Leona Maguire slips to 77 but still leads

weather-hit "Helen Holm" into last day

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

Fourteen-year-old Irish golfing prodigy Leona Maguire slumped from a sublime six-under-par 69 in Friday's first round to a 77 in her second circuit before thunder and lightning forced a suspension of play for 1hr 20min from 3.50pm in the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play golf championship at Troon Portland links today.
Leona posted a 36-hole tally of four-under-par 146, one ahead of Scottish Under-21 champion Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar), pictured above by Cal carson Golf Agency driving from the first tee today, and former Curtis Cup player Emma (Duggleby) Brown from Yorkshire's Malton & Norton club. Kelsey had a 72 (36-36) for 147, and Emma, who won this title in 2004 when her maiden name was Duggleby, had a 73.
No question that Emma's decision to retire from international golf three or four years ago was a trifle premature. She would still provide the backbone for any England or Great Britain & Ireland team. Emma had birdies at four of the par-5s on the outward journey – the first, second, sixth and ninth – and also birdied the par-4 17th in halves of 35 and 38.
Where Leona is, her identical twin Lisa – whose golfing CV is equally
impressive – is never far away and, sure enough, Lisa posted a pair of
74s to be sharing fourth place on 148 among those – just over half the
field – who were able to complete their second rounds before the
lightning-in-the-vicinity early warning box forced an immediate
suspension of play.
All the players still out on the course were ordered to take shelter in
greenkeepers' sheds until further notice or return to the safety of
the clubhouse if they were near enough.
Leona Maguire, the Irish women's amateur champion at the tender age of
13 – she beat her sister in last year's final – and winner of the
French Under-21 girls' title a couple of weeks ago, looked on course
for another super score when she birdied the fourth, fifth and sixth
and dropped a shot only at the seventh in reaching the turn in
two-under-par 36.
But, for once, the slip of a lass from the Slieve Russell club in
Northern Ireland, was flummoxed by a change in the wind direction to
the opposite of what it was on Friday – and she bogeyed the 10th, 11th,
12th and 14th and required 41 shots (four over par) to come home.
Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle), joint fourth in the event last year,
looked to have blown her chances of a repeat with a second-round 81 for
154. She bogeyed the second, third, fourth and 10th before running up a
double bogey 7 at the 12th and further bogeys at the 14th and 17th.
Birdies at the fi
fth and ninth repaired only some of the damage.
But Stirling University student Kelsey MacDonald was able to shoot a
three-under-par 72, thanks to birdies at the3 fifth, sixth, ninth and
11th and only one three-putt bogey at the eighth.
"I'm coming into form at the right time," said a chirpy Kelsey. "The
wind was coming the other way today, which made it awkward to get the
right club in your hands at the par-3s."
Play resumed after the 1hr 20min hiatus in a downpour. The best score
after the break was a four-under-par, six-birdie 71 (36-35) by the 2006
Welsh girls' champion Tara Davies, which lifted her up in joint fourth place on 148 alongside France's Spanish open amateur champion Lucie Andre and Lisa Maguire … and Wales into a share of the lead with France on 298 in the team event.
With Scotland (Kelsey MacDonald and Kylie Walker) a close-up third on
301, the stage is set for an exciting finish to that sideshow over
Royal Troon on Sunday.
The withdrawal of Rachel Connor, daughter of Manchester Golf Club's Scots-born pro, with a sore back, meant that England could not have a two-player final score. Hannah Barwood was the other English player whose scores were counting for a team.
Backing up Kelsey MacDonald in the top 16 are Scottish universities champion Laura Murray (Alford) (74-149), Fife champion Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) (76-73) and Swiss open amateur title -holder Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) (72-150).
A total of 66 players with 36 hole totals of 11-over-par 161 and better qualified for Sunday's final round which will tee off at 7.30am at Royal Troon.
The most notable failures to beat the cut were two leading Irish players, Niamh Kitching (Claremorris) (80-163) and 2007 native champion Karen Delaney (Carlow) (87-174).

Rachel Connor withdraws from "Helen Holm"

Rachel Connor, daughter of the Scottish-born Manchester Golf Club professional, withdrew from the remainder of the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Troon this morning.
She is suffering from a sore back, which probably explains why she returned an 83 over Troon Portland in yesterday's first round.
The leading 66 players and ties after today's second round over Troon Portland will qualify for the final 18 holes over Royal Troon on Sunday. That means in the region of 24 players will be eliminated.

Hampshire’s Chris Quinn wins third English seniors’ crown

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Hampshire’s Chris Quinn won her third English senior women’s championship when she beat Northumberland’s Lucy Newton by 2 and 1 in the 18-hole final at Hunstanton, Norfolk.
Meanwhile, Norfolk county captain Nickie Clarke won the Division B title, beating Cheshire’s Sheila McKinnon 3 and 1.
Chris Quinn, who previously won this event in 2004 and 2005 and was British champion in 2006, remarked about her latest success: “It’s always special to win, but it’s particularly nice to come back.
“I’m delighted to keep winning in seniors golf, when there are new players coming in all the time and we’re all getting a year older!” added Chris, who was 56 on Thursday.
“I’ve played quite a bit this spring in preparation for the season and got my handicap back to scratch. That gave me a little bit of confidence and I’ve driven the ball particularly well this week which helps on this course, which is a tremendous test of golf.” .
Lucy Newton is one of the newcomers to senior ranks and played fantastic golf all week before putting up a great fight in the final.
The match was played in strong winds and both players coped well with the tough conditions, but Chris had the advantage of much greater length, regularly hitting 250-yards or further.
She took the lead on the third and went two up on the tricky sixth hole where the upturned green and the difficult winds combined to frustrate Lucy’s approach shot. However, the Northumberland player fought back and was on level terms at the turn.
Chris pulled ahead again, winning the 10th – helped by one of her trademark long drives – and went two up with a birdie on the par-5 11th. She lost the 14th, a short par 4 where she tangled first with rough and then with a bunker. The players halved the next two holes before Chris sealed the title by holing a testing putt on the 17th.
Earlier the two players came through tight semi-finals which both finished on the 18th green. Chris beat Norfolk’s Jo Ashmore while Lucy defeated Lincolnshire’s Denise Parker.
The Division B title fight was also close. “It was a good match against a good opponent,” said winner Nickie Clarke, who was making her first appearance in an English seniors’ event. She didn’t get in front until the ninth, but once she took the lead she stayed ahead.
“I am absolutely over the moon. What could be nicer than to win in your home county and on such a wonderful golf course.
“I didn’t come here with any expectations because I haven’t been playing a lot of golf – but I am always optimistic and I had a good caddy!” Hunstanton member Jean Johnson was on the bag.
Nickie is a past chairman of the English Ladies’ (now Women’s) Golf Association and was a successful England team captain.

Leona Maguire and Mary McKenna after the Irish girl's brilliant opening round in the Helen Holm Scottish women's open amateur stroke-play championships (image by Cal Carson Golf Agency; click on it to enlarge).

LEONA MAGUIRE STUNS HELEN HOLM FIELD

WITH DEBUT SIX-UNDER-PAR 69 AT TROON

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

Leona Maguire, the new French Under-21 champion a couple of weeks ago
and last year's Irish women's amateur champion at the tender age of 13,
lived up to her star billing in the first round of the Helen Holm
Scottish women's open amateur golf stroke-play golf championship at
Troon on the Ayrshire coast today.
The 14-year-old twin from the Slieve Russell club in Co Cavan stunned a
star-studded field with a debut round of six-under-par 69 over the
testing Troon Portland links to open up a three-stroke advantage with
two rounds still to go at the weekend, one more over Portland on
Saturday followed by the final round over the Open championship links
at next-door Royal Troon.
Leona saw the Troon Portland links for the first time in her practice
round on Thursday and she gave a lot of the credit for piloting her
round a par-75 course with a southwest wind blowing in her face on the
inward journey to her uncle, Tony Maguire, who caddied for her both
days.
In Under-18 golf, girls are not allowed caddies but in open
tournaments, they can.
"I won the French Under-21 title a couple of weeks ago, so I am playing
well," said Leona. "I got to20five under par by going out in 33 with
birdies at the first, fifth and sixth and an eagle 3 at the ninth.
"The longest putts I holed all day were at the fifth and the ninth,
both from about 15ft.
"It wasn't quite so easy playing into the wind after the turn. I got
another birdie with a five-iron to about 6ft at the 13th got get to six
under par but I dropped my only shot at the 15th where we misjudged the
approach club and went through the back of the green.
"But I was able to get back to six under with a birdie at the 17th."
Another Irish legend, Vagliano Trophy and Curtis Cup captain Mary
McKenna from the Donabate club, Dublin, was among the first to
congratulate Leona after she had returned her memorable tournament and
course debut scorecard.
"Leona is terrific. In fact, Leona and her sister Lisa are both
terrific. I know they're only 14 and you don't want to ask too much of
them too soon but you would have to say they are bang in contention for
places in the GB&I women's team for the Vagliano Trophy match in
Hamburg in July," said Mary.
Leona leads by two from two lesser-known English players, Tilly Holder
(Woburn) and Kym Larratt (Kibworth, Leicestershire), on the 72 mark.
Although Niamh Kitching (Claremorris), playing immediately in front of
Leona Maguire, did not have a good day – she had a double bogey 7 on
her card and required 44 blows (six over par) to reach the turn on her
way to an 83, it was, on the whole, a good day for Ireland.
Leona's twin sister Lisa and Danielle McVeigh (Royal Co Down) are
sharing eighth place on 74, both having halves of 37 over a par 38-37
lay-out.
Former Irish women's champion Karen Delaney (Carlow) had the misfortune
to start her round with a quadruple bogey 9 at a 423yd hole which is
one of eight par-5s on the course and one of the easiest to birdie for
the top players.
Karen, not surprisingly perhaps, then bogeyed the second, third and
fourth to be seven over par standing on the fifth tee. She reached the
turn in 45 against the par of 38 and finished with

Scotland supporters too had reasons to be cheerful. Kylie Walker, fourth last year, made a solid start with a 73 to be joint fourth overnight. Kylie was out in two under par with no bogeys and birfdies at the seventh and ninth. She dropped a shot at her first hole into the wind, the 10th but was lucky, by her own admission, to drop only one shot with a bogey 6 at the 15th.

After driving into the burn and from there landing in a bush, from which she had to lift and drop under penalty, Kylie finished up holing a 60yd wedge shot over bushes for a 6.

"It could have been a lot more," said a relieved Kylie. "So I'm having to have a 73. I did get a 2 at the 16th with an eight-iron to around 15 to 20 feet and I holed a 15-footer for a birdie at the 17th."

Young Gillian Monteith (Portpatrick Dunskey), Scottish Under-21 champion Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) and new Scottish universities champion Laura Murray (Alford) made the top 20 at the end of the first day - joint 16th to be precise - each hitting the level-par 75 mark on a day when the CSS was 77.

Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) came in late with a 76 which looked like being a few shots better when she reached the turn in 36.

Former multi-Scottish champion Anne Laing (Vale of Leven) showed she's no back number by any means with a 77, one shot ahead of Curtis Cupper Carly Booth (Comrie), who came home in 41, and Swiss women's open amateur champion Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) who took 41 shots for the "easier" outward half.

Kylie Walker's 73 and Kelsey MacDonald's 75 have put Scotland in second place on 148, only one shot behind France, on the first day of the team event.

Top scorer Moira misses East Lothian

championship match-play next week

Gullane's Moira Thomson had the best scratch score of 75 in today's (Thu) qualifying round for the East Lothian women's county golf championship over the Gullane No 2 course.
Unfortunately, due to work commitments, she cannot play in the match-play stages of the competition on Monday and Tuesday next week.
Mary Lou Renton (Gifford) and Edinburgh University student Emma Fairnie (Dunbar) came next in the scores with 77 apiece. They are seeded to meet each other in the final with, after a card countback, Mary Lou gaining the No 1 seed honour.
The 16 qualifiers included a mother and daughter, Dawn and Clara Young, both North Berwick members. Clara is rated one of the most promising junior talents in the area. Her handicap has come down from 30 to 12 over the past two years. Today she had an 82, one better than mum!
Ruth Carroll (Musselburgh Old), the defending champion, is the 13th qualifier with an 87.

Michele Thomson wins $525 for eighth

place finish on SunCoast Ladies Tour

Michele Thomson earned $525 for a joint eighth place finish in her second appearance on the SunCoast Ladies Tour in Florida today.
In her debut two weeks ago, she scored her first win as a professional and pocketed $2,000.
The 21-year-old from Ellon, who won the Scottish women's amateur title last year when she also gained Curtis Cup honours for Great Britain & Ireland, had steady rounds of 72, 74 and 73 for a three-over-par total of 219 at the Rock Springs Ridge Golf Club, Apooka in Centra Florida.
She finishede seven shots behind Austrian Stefanie Michl who had rounds of 74, 69 and 69 for four-under-par 212 to collect the $2,000 winner's prize.
Overnight leader Miriam Nagl from Germany had scores of 71, 67 and 75 for 213 and had to settle for the $1,100 runner-up prize.
Michele Thomson is marking time until she can make her debut as a rookie on the Ladies European Tour. The Swiss Open in mid-May looks to be her best bet. She just failed to gain a high enough players' card at the Tour School to gain automatic entry to most LET events.
Although she can file entries for all the competitions, she has to wait to see if the fully-qualified players take up all the available places in each field before she knows if she will get to play.

Jo Ashmore topples top seed Roz to

reach last four of English seniors

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Norfolk’s Jo Ashmore toppled top seed Rozalyn Adams to reach the semi-finals of the English senior women’s championship at Hunstanton today.
The Barnham Broom player won the first hole - and stayed ahead. By the turn she was one-under par and four up and she went on to win by 4 and 2.
“I am just so excited,” she said afterwards. “It was a really tough match – Roz is an excellent player, but I just went out and enjoyed it and played really steadily.”
Earlier in the day Jo Ashmore beat former champion Sue Ellis on the 18th green. Now, she meets senior international Chris Quinn who celebrated her birthday by winning a 21-hole marathon against defending champion Sue Dye.
Their match was a closely fought and compelling encounter, with never more than one hole between the two players. As they moved into the closing holes Sue appeared to take the advantage with birdies on 15 and 16 to go one up. But Chris squared matters on the 17th and they halved the last to go into extra time.
A superb up-and-down for par kept Chris in the match on the first extra hole and she finally clinched it with an fine long putt on the 21st.
“It was always going to be close and it was really great fun,” she said. Chris Quinn is a past winner of both this title and the British seniors’ championship.
Northumberland’s Lucy Newton continued her impressive debut performance in the championship with a 2 and 1 win over senior international Christine Stirling.
“I am so enjoying myself, I just don’t want it to end. It’s just so good to be the young kid on the block!” she laughed.
Their low-scoring and close match was described by spectators as worthy of a final. Lucy edged ahead after the 12th, won the 16th to go two up and claimed her semi-final place with a half on the 17th.
Lucy Newton willnext play Lincolnshire’s Denise Parker who came through another tight tussle, beating Cambridgeshire’s Paula Parker on the 18th.
Norfolk also has one representative in the Division B semi-finals, with county captain Nickie Clarke winning through to the final four.

Nicola ties for NJCAA Women's Region

2 championship with Redlands team-mate

Essex girl Nicola Race tied with Redlands Community College, Oklahoma team-mate Andrea Kaelin for first place in the NJCAA Women's Region 2 championship at Crimson Creek, El Reno in Oklahoma.
Redlands CC, in fact, filled five of the first six places in the individual event. The odd one in was Lizi Sweetnam (Seminole State CC) from Leighton Buzzard. Lizi finished joint fifth on 166 with a pair of 83s.
Nicola Race, who is transferring to the University of Missouri after the summer break, had rounds of 76 and 73, exactly the same as Andrea Kaelin, also of Redlands CC. They finished three shots ahead of another Redlands player, Emily Kwat with 78 and 74.
Needless to say, Redlands simply ran away with the team title, finishing with a team score of 611 which was EIGHTY-ONE strokes ahead of runners-up Arkansas-For Smith. Now that's what we call a clear-cut victory margin!

LET's Nations Cup tournament at Alicante, Spain

Scotland's Clare Queen, Lynn Kenny

in joint sixth place with a 69

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
By BETHAN CUTLER
Nikki Garrett and Joanne Mills combined for a seven-under 65, giving Australia a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Comunitat Valenciana European Nations Cup in Spain. Australia is one of two teams from outside Europe playing at the event on an invitation.
Team USA and the Netherlands were a shot behind in the 20-nation team event at La Sella Resort in Denia, Alicante.
Today's opening round of four-balls (better-ball) will be repeated on Saturday, but scores are expected to be higher in Friday and Sunday’s difficult “Valencian Cup” format, which is a variation on greensomes.
In “Valencian Cup”, teams play both balls off the tee and then switch. After one shot on a par-3, two shots on a par-4 and three shots on a par-5, they then play one ball in alternate shot.
Nikki Garrett contributed six of the Australian team’s seven birdies, with three on the front nine and three on the back nine. After she rolled in a 15ft birdie putt at the second hole, she added two more back-to-back from the fourth.
Joanne Mills knocked in a 12-footer at the ninth for birdie, giving the pair an outward total of 32.
Garrett then made birdies from 17, 13 and four feet at the 11th, 15th and 18th holes respectively.
“It was a great start. You couldn’t ask for anything better than what we did today. I left it all up to Nikki. I was just the support staff really. I contributed one birdie but Nikki played absolutely fantastic,” said Mills.
Garrett added: “Jo played well and when I needed her, she was there, pretty much. I sank a lot of putts and I think we did combine pretty well as a team.”
For Garrett, this tournament could prove the start of a comeback season after she struggled last year. She won the 2007 Tenerife and Spanish Opens in her second year on tour but finished 38th on the 2008 New Star Money List. She described her swing as “disgusting” at the end of last season.
“When I got home at the end of the year my coach said 'I think you swung it betteryear old',” she said, adding that she was now feeling more comfortable and relax as a nine ed.
The American team of Beth Daniel and Meg Mallon got off to a steady start with five regulation pars but picked up the pace when Daniel birdied No 6, followed by further birdies on 10 and 11. Mallon then chipped in for birdie on 14 and 15, but missed chances on 16 and 17.
“We didn’t know what to expect,” Mallon explained. “Beth hasn’t competed at this level in a couple of years and I haven’t competed since last July so I think when we look back at it we’re both going to be really pleased.”
Daniel, the 2009 US Solheim Cup captain, added: “Tomorrow is a different format but both of us have played in the J C Penny tournament in the past with US PGA Tour partners so we are probably a little bit more used to that format than others.
"We also played straight foursomes quite a bit. It seemed like a lot of Solheim Cup captains had a tendency to pair us together in foursomes.”
Christel Boeljon contributed six of the Dutch team’s seven birdies, but both players bogeyed the par-3 17th. Boeljon is a rookie, playing in only her third event as a professional after a strong start to the year, when she tied for 13th at the Australian Open.
“I’ve played this format before in amateur things. I played the last season as an amateur but it’s a bit different because it’s a big tournament. I’m having a lot of fun,” she said.
Her playing partner, Marjet Van der Graaff, is beginning her second year on tour.
Defending champion team England, comprising Lisa Hall and recent Australian Open champion Laura Davies, shot five-under 67 and were two shots off the lead along with the French pair of Gwladys Nocera and Anne-Lise Caudal.
Scotland's Clare Queen and Lynn Kenny were joint sixth on 69.
The home nation of Spain opened with a 73 to finish the day eight shots off the pace.
The €325,000 Comunitat Valenciana European Nations Cup is sponsored by Valencian
Community Investments (VCI) for the second consecutive year.

Quite a change from the early days of the tournament which was won by a Scottish player in 15 of its first 16 years after its 1973 inception.
It will take something special over the Friday-Saturday rounds at Troon Portland and the final Sunday 18 holes at the sometimes brutal Royal Troon links from one of the current front-line Scottish amateurs such as Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle), joint fourth last year, Laura Murray (Alford), joint 10th, and Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle), tied 13th, to produce a "Homecoming Winner."
The good news for anyone consider heading for Troon to watch the action is that this is arguably the strongest field ever assembled for the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association's flagship stroke-play tournament.
The field of 91 - there have been eight scratchings since the draw was made - includes the first three players in the Ladies European Amateur rankings. They are all French - Lucie Andre (1), Rosanna Crepiat (2) and Marion Ricordeau (3).
Andre and Crepiat are teenagers who have dominated the first two national open amateur championships. Crepiat won the Portuguese open title with Andre second; Andre won the "Spanish," beating Crepiat in the final.
Throw in the fact that Ricordeau has +4 of a handicap and you realise just what the Scots are up against with only two (Kylie Walker 29th and Carly Booth 61st) ranked in the top 100.
For many West of Scotland golf addicts, the big attraction will be the chance to see at first hand Ireland's "wonder twins," 14-year-old Leona and Lisa Maguire from the Slieve Russell club, Co Cavan.
This is their debut appearance in the "Helen Holm." Both play off +1, they are identical twins and the rate at which they are improving suggests they will make Curtis Cup team history by being selected for next year's match.
Leona won the French Under-21 girls' title a couple of weekends ago. She beat Lisa in the final of the Irish WOMEN'S amateur championship last year while Lisa was first and Leona second in the 2008 European Young Masters' girls' championship. Both were members of the European Junior Ryder Cup team. And these are just some of the highlights from their extraordinary golfing CVs at a tender age.
The eight scratchings are:
Jenny Haggblom (Finland), Laura Harvey (Richmond), Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze), Jennifer Linklater (Largs), Addi Shamash (Kirkcudbright), Stephanie Evans (Vale of Llangollen), Jeanne Metivier (France), Laura King (Wales).

winners of Scottish universities' titles

We have been unable to display all the leading scores from the Scottish universities championships over the Moray Golf Club courses at Lossiemouth at the end of March because the organiser, Dr Rob Macpherson, unfortunately was laid low by a series of illnesses immediately after the end of the tournament.
Rob is now on the mend and he has forwarded the final totals:

Surrey’s Rozalyn Adams is top seed

in English seniors’ championship

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Surrey’s Rozalyn Adams birdied her way home to become the top seed for the match-play stages of the English senior women’s championship at Hunstanton, Norfolk.
After 27 holes without a birdie, she transformed her score by playing the last nine holes in five-under par and swept in as leading qualifier.
Roz shot two-under par 73 for the day and was two-over for the 36 holes of qualifying. She said: “I played the first 27 holes trying to be conservative and not make any errors. Then on the back nine I got a good putt in on 10 and told myself it was time to be more positive.”
She added: “I am absolutely thrilled to be leading qualifier. The first target is always just to qualify for the match-play but having done that, then you want to win.”
In the first round of the knock-out she will play English senior stroke-play champion Janet Melville, who grabbed the 16th and last spot in the draw with a second-round 77.
The championship was again blessed with superb weather and a helping breeze for the homeward holes. The scores reflected the conditions with four sub-par rounds and three more of level par.
Lincolnshire’s Denise Parker matched the low score of the day with her 73, which included a rare birdie on 18.
“I am delighted with this – I’ve had 18 months of playing absolute tripe and it’s just come back!”
Among the others who beat par were defending champion Sue Dye, who was five over after eight holes and played the rest of the course in six-under-par, helped by two eagles.
Norfolk’s Jo Ashmore peppered her card with six birdies as she headed to a second-round score of level par. She qualified comfortably in eighth place and now plays former champion Sue Ellis of Dorset, who shot one-under 74, helped by a birdie-eagle start.
In Division B the top qualifier is Shropshire’s Sue Pidgeon, who won this title last year. She finished a shot clear of Norfolk’s Eppie Zandvoort, who is joined in the draw by her county colleagues Nickie Clarke, the Norfolk county captain, and Cheryl Sanders of the host club. QUALIFIERS

What a shame for Grant Carnie!

Loss of form at championship

Ellon's Grant Carnie has been playing so well for Brevard College, North Carolina in this season's (2008-2009) US college circuit that it's a shame he lost his form when he needed it most - in the SAC Championship at Etowah Valley Country Club this week.
Carnie could do no better than rounds of 77, 80 and 77 for a total of 234 and joint 30th place in very windy conditions.
He finished 17 shots behind the winner, Chase Carroll (Tusculum) who scored 69, 71 and 77 for 217.
Brevard College (902) finished fifth in the team event won by Newberry College (883) ahead of Wingate University (895).
In the conference's women's championship at the same venue, Brevard College freshman, Lucy McNulty, a former pupil of Oban High School and a member of Dalmally Golf Club, finished a creditable joint 22nd in a field of 43 with scores of 88, 88 and 91 for a total of 257
Lucy did not enroll at Brevard College until January.
Sarah Jane Sinard (Carson Newman College) won by two strokes with three rounds of 75 for a total of 225.
Brevard College women's team, playing in the event for the first time, finished last of nine with a total of 1229. Carson Newman College won the title by 15 shots from Wingate University with a total of 968.

National universities stroke-play championships at Notts

Jane Turner is the best of

British - winner by five

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Craigielaw's Jane Turner, a student at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, has taken the British women's universities stroke-play golf championship trophy home to Scotland after three excellent rounds at Notts Golf Club.
Jane, 19, pictured right, spreadeagled the field with a first-round, six-under-par 69 - a women's record for the 5,864yd, par-75 course - and built on that flying start with subsequent rounds of 73 and 73 for an impressive 10-under-par total of 215 at Notts Golf Club.
The only Scot in the tournament, Turner won by five shots from Gloucestershire's Sian James (Birmingham University), recent winner of the R&A Bursars' women's title after three rounds at St Andrews. Sian was 10 shots adrift of Turner after an opening 79 and she did well to halve the deficit with later rounds of 70 and 71.
Katherine O'Connor of UW Newport edged out another Birmingham student, Lucy Williams, to take third place, with a total of 226.
In the British men's universities stroke-play championship, which still has one day to go, Kevin Garwood from Bournemouth has opened up a two-shot lead with a 54-hole tally of 213.
Stirling students Bobby Rushford and James White are the leading Scots in joint sixth and eighth place respectively on 222 and 223. Rushford has scored 76, 71 and 75; White 77, 72 and 74.

Northumberland’s Lucy Newton

leads English seniors’ title race
NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Northumberland’s Lucy Newton made a dream debut in the English senior women’s championship at Hunstanton, Norfolk, where she shot a two-under par 73 to take the first round lead.
Lucy, who had six birdies in her round, is playing her first full season of senior golf.
“I came wide-eyed, eager and excited to see what standard I needed to be at!” she said.
“I am absolutely over the moon, but I was lucky in practice because I played with two ladies who had been members of Hunstanton and they were fantastic at guiding me round,” added Lucy, who plays off four and was last year’s Northumberland county captain.
She is three shots clear of the 2006 champion, Christine Watson, and five shots ahead of the next group, which includes Hunstanton’s Jean Johnson.
“I was very pleased with my score,” said Christine, who had three birdies in her round. “I’ve played in seven or eight championships here and never done any good - but I like the course and I’ve just kept on trying!”
She made the most of a benign day of brilliant sunshine and light breezes, to put on a display of solid and accurate ball striking. But she added: “I’ve got to do the same again tomorrow – and this course still has an awful lot of teeth.”
No-one knows that better than home player Jean Johnson, who led the Norfolk challenge with a three-over 78. Despite feeling the “huge pressure” of competing on her own course, she produced steady golf, hitting 15 greens in regulation, claiming three birdies – and suffering four three-putts.
Jean, who has been taking lessons from the club’s assistant professional, Henry Potter, commented: “It’s got to be an advantage to know the course and when you get in a good position it’s a matter of gritting your teeth and keeping it going.”
Norfolk’s other two representatives in the championship division are also well placed.
Sue Meadows, from Hunstanton, and Jo Ashmore, from Barnham Broom, both shot 81 and are in a group sharing 16th place, which includes defending champion, Sue Dye of Cheshire.
The field, of 114 players, is divided into two divisions. After Wednesday's second stroke-play round the top 16 players in each division will go forward to the match-play stages, with the finals taking place on Friday afternoon.
In Division B, Shropshire’s Sue Pidgeon made a good start to the defence of her title with a score of 82. She shares the first-round lead with Jaki White of Hertfordshire.Eaton’s Eppie Zandvoort was the best of the Norfolk players in this division and shares fifth place on 85.
She’s a shot ahead of county captain Nickie Clarke (Royal Norwich) and Cheryl Sanders (Hunstanton). Janie Preece (Royal West Norfolk) is a further stroke behind.

Katy McNicoll loses share of lead in

Sunshine State Conference tourney

FROM THE LYNN UNIVERSITY, BOCA RATON WEBSITE
Lynn University’s women’s golf team is in second place and just nine strokes back of the lead after the first day of competition at the Sunshine State Conference women’s championship at Winter Haven, Florida.
Three Fighting Knights are within the top-10 led by Katy McNicoll (from Carnoustie) who is six-over par on the 6,037-yard, par 72 Lake Region Yacht and Country Club.
McNicoll was tied for the individual lead after a first round 73 but poor course conditions dropped her to a 77 in the final 18-holes and into fifth place overall on 150.
Two-time SSC All-Tournament Team recipient Maha Haddioui picked up her play in the second round, shooting a 74 after carding a 77 in round one. She is tied for sixth individually on 151. Megan Mangone rounds out the top-10 trio. She is eighth with a 36-hole total of 152.

Peter Latimer wins Conference

Championship by 10 strokes!

St Andrews New Golf Club member Peter Latimer from Markinch, a student at Guilford College, Greensboro, North Carolina, has won back-to-back events on the American college circuit, the latest being the Old Dominion Athletics Conference championship at Bay Creek Resort, Cape Charles in Virginia.
Over a long course (7260yd), Latimer, pictured right, who lost a three-way play-off for the East of Scotland Open at Lundin Links last summer, had rounds of 73, 76 and 76 for a total of nine-over-par 225 to win the title by TEN strokes from Adam Skaff (Roanoke) who scores 82, 75 and 78 for 235. It was his fourth win in all in America.
A tough course and bad weather made it a stiff test for the field of 40 players and Latimer's experience of Scottish golfing conditions undoubtedly gave him a huge advantage.
Guilford College, team event leaders with one round to go, were overhauled on the final day by Washington & Lee University who automatically go forward to the season-ending NCAA championships.
Latimer must wait to see if he gains an invitation to compete as an individual and with his record he must stand a good chance.

R&A lends support to Kemnay kids'
World Challenge expedition

The R&A is supporting a group of Aberdeenshire school pupils taking part in a World Challenge expedition to Africa this summer - where they will teach golf to village children in Namibia - by buying them a bag of golf equipment.
The 15 Kemnay Academy students, aged from 15 to 17, will travel through Zambia, Botswana, and Namibia on the educational expedition from 16 June to 16 July. Included in their itinerary is learning survival techniques from bushmen in the Kalahari Desert, travelling through the Okavango Delta in dugout canoes and a trek through the Batoka Gorge.
The expedition will be an opportunity for the students to learn about other cultures but they are keen to teach local children something of Scottish culture. And they plan to teach them to play golf.
“As part of our project we’ll be interacting with the local children which is when we’ll do our golf coaching,” said Kintore 15 year old Jordyn Booth, a keen golfer and member of Kemnay Golf Club.
“These children will probably not have seen a golf club before so we are really looking forward to getting them started.”
This week The R&A, which already makes a significant contribution to developing golf in Africa, supported the expedition by giving the Aberdeenshire students a bag of SNAG golf equipment, which they will use to teach children and leave behind in Namibia.
This is the same equipment which is proving extremely popular with children across Scotland. The junior golf programme, clubgolf, is using it to introduce 38,000 children to golf in schools this summer.
Duncan Weir, The R&A Director of Golf Development, said, “The R&A has been doing a great deal of support work in Africa for over a decade and this is a good opportunity for us to do even more via these young Scots.”
Golf is in different stages of development in the three countries. Zambia has a rich history in the sport and its national Open has been won by many famous names. Namibia has 20 golf courses and its countryman, Trevor Dodds was a winner on the PGA Tour in 1997. In Botswana progress is not so advanced but The R&A is working to help improve the situation.
“In recent years we have been supporting events in these countries, have sent golf professionals there to teach and have donated greenkeeping machinery,” said Mr Weir.
“What these students are doing seems potentially another good initiative and I believe they can make a difference.
“What would be success for us would be to see these countries represented at our Junior Open at Lundin Golf Club immediately before The Open at St Andrews.”
The students meanwhile have been busy raising funds to pay for the expedition through a variety of events. By organising celidhs, sponsored abseils and a variety of jobs, they are just about there.
Jordyn is the only golfer in the group, yet an accomplished one. Her handicap is 16 and she is in the second year of clubgolf’s Stage 3 programme.
Audra Booth, clubgolf’s Regional Manager for Grampian, will be training the students to enable them to teach the game to the Namibian children and also show local school teachers how to deliver the game.
Added Jordyn: “We are extremely grateful to The R&A for buying us the SNAG equipment which will help us interact with the children and give them something new to learn. Hopefully they will all enjoy playing golf and keep practising once we have gone home.”

Pictured above are: Duncan Weir, R&A Director of Golf Development and Torquil McInroy, clubgolf Project Manager, with the firstclubgolf equipment, Jordyn Booth (15), Sarah Loggie (15) and Amy Mitchell (17) – all from Kintore - and Blackburn’s Keira Watson (15) at St Andrews.

Next month's Corning Classic will be the last

The LPGA Corning Classic will disappear off the schedule after next month's tournament - another victim of the Credit Crunch and companies having to tighten their belts.
The 31-year-old event is the longest-running tournament on the LPGA Tour with the same sponsor at the same venue.
The tournament has lost $500,000 in sponsorships and has not been able to replace the lost revenue.
Corning has been restructuring recently and laid off 3,500 people from its global work force. Gregg says financing the tournament is no longer a viable expense.

Loreto College favourites to repeat Irish

Schoolgirls' Senior Cup victory

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Loreto College, Cavan’s teenage stars Leona and Lisa Maguire are strong favourites to successfully defend their Irish Schoolgirls’ Senior Cup title when play commences at Edmondstown Golf Club on Monday, April 27.
The pair won last year’s event at Milltown by a margin of 15 shots from Sligo’s Ursuline College but this year’s event promises to be a much tighter affair. Coincidently, nearest rivals to the Cavan twins will be another promising twosome in the form of the Coyne twins, Edel and Julie, representing Midleton College Cork. The Youghal pair qualified strongly in the Southern District qualifiers last month while nearest challengers Aisling Hill and Julie O’Gara from Mean Scoill Mhuire in Roscommon are also sure to feature in the final placings.
This year sees the introduction of a Junior Cup to encourage competition among the underage players. Mount Mercy College Cork look the strongest team on paper but Presentation Wexford and Victoria College, Belfast are sure to have a say in the destination of this year’s trophy.
Play commences at 9am on the Monday morning at Edmondstown with the best two Stableford gross scores from three to count.

University exams mean Pamela

has to turn down invitation

to play in LET's Swiss Open

Pamela Pretswell has had to turn down the opportunity to play in the Deutsche Bank Ladies’ Swiss Open next month. Winning the Swiss international women's amateur championship last August earned her an invitation to play in this event.
"It would have been my first professional tournament and I was looking forward to teeing up with the leading European ladies on tour - and with Krystle Caithness and Michele Thomson making their LET debuts in the event," said Pamela.
"So much so that I spent a few days in Portugal at the start of April to sharpen my game rather then defend the Scottish universities women's championship at Lossiemouth. Unfortunately, I've now found out that I have three university exams scheduled on two of the days of the tournament.
"So instead of golfing in Switzerland, I will be sitting my second-year Business Management exams at Glasgow University."
The silver lining for Pamela, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency in action at last September's women's home internationals at Wrexham, is that for the first time she will be able to play in the Scottish women's amaeur championship at Southerness the following week.
Bothwell Castle Golf Club member Pamela will be 20 on May 6. She is one of six Scots in the Ladies Golf Union preliminary squad for GB&I's Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe at Hamburg on July 24 and 25.

Cara Gruber wins Northern Counties

title No 3 with improving form

Royal Dornoch's Cara Gruber simply got better and better over the three days of the Northern Counties women's golf championship and she finished on a high note by winning the title for a third time at Nairn Golf Club.
Cara, the fifth best qualifier for the match-play stages, was three down at one stage in her first-round tie, but in today's matches she had put all that behind her. In the semi-finals, Cara beat the top seed, Eileen Manson (Thurso) by 4 and 3 before she beat former champion Jenny Milne (Elgin) by 6 and 5 in the final.
One-handicapper Cara went two up in the early stages of the final and when Jenny was bunkered at the sixth and ninth, Gruber led by four holes at the turn.
Milne won only one hole - the 10th - before Gruber won the next three to finish the match on the 13th green.
Sally Rowan (Inverness), who plays off 21 and whose mother Sylvia won the same title in 2001, won the handicap championship. She beat Sheila Duncan (Royal Doroch), playing off 19, by 4 and 3 in the final.
Today's results:
Semi-finals - C Gruber (Royal Dornoch) bt E Manson (Thurso) 4 and 3, J Milne (Elgin) bt A Bartlett (Royal Dornoch) at the 22nd.

Neil Henderson, a very good first year at Old Dominion University, Norfolk in Virginia.

Neil Henderson joint seventh in Colonial

AA Conference championship in Georgia

Former Scottish schoolboys champion, Neil Henderson from North Berwick finished a very creditable seventh at the weekend in the men’s Colonial Athletic Association Conference Finals, at Callaway Gardens Golf Club, Pine Mountain in Georgia, finishing ahead of some top-class opposition, including Walker Cup hopeful, Tom Sherrard from Maidstone, Kent.
Neil scored 78, 71 and 72 for a five-over-par total of 221 over a longish course of 7,057yd with a par of 72. In his final round he covered the last 15 holes in two under par with birdies at the seventh and 18th, having bogeyed the first and third. He had nine birdies over the 54 holes and a double bogey 6 at the ninth in his opening round.
Tom Sherreard (Georgia State) came 12th in a field of 55 with scores of 74, 73 and 76 for 223.
Allen John (Georgia State) was the individual winner with scores of 70, 65 and 76 for 211, two shots ahead of one of Neil Henderson's Old Dominion team-mates, Eric Onesi with scores of 74, 71 and 68.
Old Dominion (891) tied for fourth place in a field of 11 teams behind the winners Virginia Commonwealth University who tied with Georgia State on 877 and then won a play-off for the team-title.
Neil, who won two Scotland boy caps as well as the Scottish junior champion of champions title before he left for America, has just completed his freshman year at Old Dominion University, in Norfolk, Virginia.
“This year has been a fantastic learning experience” said Neil. “The courses are very different and the Bermuda greens take a lot of getting used to, but I managed to qualify for our first tournament in August last year and have kept my place in the team for all 11 tournaments we have competed in.”
When asked how he has managed to combine studies with the heavy golf schedule, Henderson said: “It can be quite intensive juggling classes and golf. We have been to Puerto Rico, Scottsdale, Arizona and Pinehurst this semester, which mean lots of airmiles, but it does mean quite a bit of catch-up work before the exams.”
Neil’s efforts have ensured he finished in second place in the Old Dominion team's scoring averages for the 2008-2009 college golf season.
“I did not know what to expect when I arrived here last August and simply hoped to make the team, but I have been fortunate enough to finish in the top 10 at a few tournaments, and to finish second in the teams stats is fantastic”
Neil returns to Scotland early next month and his first domestic tournament will be the Welsh open amateur stroke-play championship. He is also competing in the Scottish and British amateur championships, as well as the Scottish Order of Merits 72-hole tournaments that fit into a busy schedule.

Canadian Samantha wins rain-shortened

Futures Tour event at The Wetlands

By LISA D MICKEY
LAFAYETTE, Louisiana – There were starts and stops and far too many drops, but the rain-shortened - cut to only 36 holes - $90,000 Louisiana Pelican Classic ended on a sunny note today when Canadian Samantha Richdale fired a personal-best score of 66 to emerge as the best "mudder" and winner of the fourth annual tournament.
Richdale carded a two-under-par 70 on Friday at The Wetlands, and was on the second green when the second round was suspended on Saturday. When play resumed on Sunday, she finished up the hole almost 24 hours later with a 12 footer for birdie that jump-started her day. Richdale attacked the course and won by three shots at 136 (-8).
Rookie Christine Song (70) of Fullerton, Calif., finished second at 139 (-5), while Danah Ford (68) of Indianapolis and Haeji Kang (71) of Seoul, South Korea tied for third at 140 (-4).
“I was pretty nervous about today with so much waiting around,” said Richdale of Kelowna, British Columbia. “I just tried to go for the greens and pins that I could go for. I’m happy with the turnout.”
The week’s first weather delay started on Saturday morning. The Wetlands was exactly that after nearly an inch and a half of rain saturated the course on Friday night, making it unplayable for Saturday’s first tee times. Tour officials issued a two-hour delay to allow standing water on the tees and landing areas of several fairways to drain.
That pushed back the last tee times from a 2:30 p.m. (CDT) start to a 4:30 p.m. start. The rain returned around 4:40 p.m., followed by lightning, and play was suspended for dangerous weather at 4:50 p.m.
But when 2½ more inches of rain fell on Saturday night, the Tour’s attempt to restart Saturday’s second round at 7:30 a.m., was pushed back to 1 p.m. today. Grounds crews were still pumping water out of bunkers around noon while Tour staff members and tournament organizers huddled over a decision.
“The course conditions didn’t warrant starting before 1 p.m. and the fact that we could not complete a final round on Sunday led to the decision to make this a 36-hole tournament,” said Christy Barks, vice president of tournament operations for the Duramed FUTURES Tour.
“It’s disappointing any time you’re not able to get in 54 holes and it’s hard on the players to get ready to play, then have to wait. But we can’t do anything about Mother Nature and this is an outdoor sport.”
But if anybody can make the best of swampy conditions, it was perfect timing that this week’s event was in Cajun Country, where a can-do attitude prevails, right alongside the “grits and grillades” on Sunday in the VIP tent. The always kind-hearted locals made the best of the mess while apologizing for the rain.
“Everybody thinks we ride around in pirogues (boats) down here anyway, but I guess today, we are,” laughed tournament volunteer Caroline Roy of Lafayette.
A boat would have been handy early in the day, but by noon, the sun came back out, the wind picked up and 72 players who returned to finish Saturday’s round slogged on. They took advantage of the “lift-clean-and-place” ruling in effect and dodged large bodies of water that still remained in several fairways.
“There were lakes out there that weren’t there two days ago,” said Tour member Meghan Little of Sturgis, S.D., who tied for 21st at even-par 144.
First-round leader Liz Janangelo (77) of West Hartford, Conn., never returned to the same form she brought to The Wetlands on Friday when she tore up the course with a 65. On Sunday, she had five bogeys and no birdies and slid into a tie for ninth at 142 (-2).
Danah Ford made a run at Richdale with four birdies and a critical par save on the 18th when she gassed her approach shot over the green and had to chip from behind the bleachers.
“I tried to hit a punch 9-iron to keep it under the wind, but I guess I had a little adrenalin going,” laughed Ford.
Song, a 17-year-old rookie, started the day four shots off the lead, but closed the gap with four birdies and two bogeys this afternoon.
“At first, I was trying to play conservatively, but I took advantage of my chances,” she said. “I’m very satisfied.”
Irish-born US Curtis Cup player last year, Alison Walshe (70) of Westford, Mass., chased the leaders, but ran out of holes. She finished tied for ninth at 142 (-2) for her third consecutive top-10 finish.
“When a tournament is shortened to 36 holes, you’ve got to go for everything,” said the rookie pro, who played in this tournament three years ago as an amateur while at Tulane University.
But today was Richdale’s sprint to win. With two birdies on her first four holes, and a bogey at No. 7, the quiet Canadian took charge of the tournament with an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole. Playing from a fairway bunker 213 yards out, she pulled her 17-degree Rescue hybrid club and holed out to tie for the lead when Janangelo bogeyed the eighth hole.
Richdale took the lead with a birdie from three feet on No. 11, and then began adding insurance with birdies on 13 and 15. On the last hole, she hit past the flagstick to the back fringe and got up and down for par from 25 feet above the hole for her three-shot victory and second career win on the Duramed FUTURES Tour.
She managed her game impeccably around the soggy course, once again with caddie Paulie Maggiore on the bag for his fourth win on the Duramed FUTURES Tour. But Richdale credits a putting lesson last week with short-game guru Marius Filmalter for her success this week. And she also read sports psychologist Gio Valiante’s book, “Fearless Golf,” earlier this year, which she says has changed her approach to the way she plays.
“I’ve tried to focus more on my targets rather than where I don’t want to go and I’ve been able to hit a lot better shots,” said Richdale, who hit 14 greens in regulation and needed only 25 putts today.
Maybe it wasn’t always pretty out there and maybe a little more sunshine would have helped this week, but Richdale is not complaining. Mud or not, pirogue or dry land, she was this year’s winner in Cajun Country.
Weather: Sunny with temperatures in mid-70s with wind between 10-12 mph.

Sally Watson wins Boston play-off and

Gemma Dryburgh ties for seventh

Curtis Cup teenager Sally Watson produced a birdie at the first extra hole to win a play-off for the Under-18 girls' title in the Red Tail Open, an event on the Future Collegians World Tour, at Red Tail Golf Club near Boston, Massachusetts today (Sunday).
Sally, pictured right during the 2008 Curtis Cup match by Cal Carson Golf Agency, a 17-year-old resident student at the David Leadbetter/IMG Golf Academy at Bradenton, Florida, had rounds of 68 and 71 to tie at five-under-par 139 with Dottie Ardina (71-68) from Laguna in the Philippines.
Over the two rounds, Sally, whose parents now live at Earlsferry, Fife, had one eagle and seven birdies. Her eighth birdie came at the 37th hole - just when she needed it most!
A second Scot in the field, Gemma Dryburgh from Aberdeen, finish a creditable joint seventh in the interntional field with scores of 77 and 73 for 150. After birdieing the second, fourth and fifth in her second round, Gemma had a run of bogeys at the eighth, 11th, 12th and 13th or else she would have finished closer to the leaders.
Daughter of an Aberdeen businessman, Gemma is also a student atthe Leadbetter Academy and her golf has improved considerably over the past year.
+The United States Public Links championship will be held at the Red Tail Golf Club course during the summer ... look out for Sally Watson being in the field after showing how much she likes the course!

Good win for Scottish Vets over strong

Irish Seniors squad at Cruden Bay

A Scottish Veteran Ladies Golf Association Select overpowered a strong, on paper at least, Irish Seniors team in an over-50s women’s international golf match over the Cruden Bay links at the weekend.
It was the sixth successive win - home and away - by the Scots in the annual match for the Mary McKenna Salver which they retained by a 7 1/2-4 ½ margin.
The overall outcome was still in the balance after the Scots took the Saturday foursomes 2 ½-1 ½ but the Irish never looked like overturning the deficit today as they lost the singles 5-3.
Lorna Bennett (Ladybank), Fiona De Vries (St Rule) and Jill Harrison (Cruden Bay) won twice for the Scots while Mary McKenna (Donabate) and Valerie Hassett (Ennis) had a 100 % success rate for the Irish.
“I thought we played very well indeed against a very strong Irish team,” said Lynne Terry (Cruden Bay), the Scots skipper.
Curtis Cup skipper Mary McKenna, tongue in cheek, said: “We had it all sussed out how to turn the match around in the singles, only to find out that the wind was in completely the opposite direction - and new holes had been cut. Seriously, we all thought Cruden Bay a superb course, full of character and, whatever the result, we have all enjoyed ourselves tremendously and are going back to Ireland with a lot of good memories."
Mary added: "The wind for the second day made a very big difference. Whereas you couldn't get up in two shots at the 17th on Saturday into the wind, today, with the wind behind, it was a drive and an eight-iron for me."
May Hughes, pictured right putting at the 16th, wiped out a three-hole deficit against Valerie Hassett by winning the 15th, 16th and 17th but she drove into the ditch that eats into the right of the 18th fairway and went down by one hole.

St Andrews trail in California

in US Intercollegiate

St Andrews University's team of five are trailing the field by a long way in the United States Intercollegiate tournament at Stanford University golf course - Tiger Woods' (and Mhairi McKay) old stamping ground - in California.
Tze Huang Choo (Washington University) leads the individual standings with Sunday's final round to go after two brilliant Saturday scores of five-under-par 65 for 10-under-par 130 over the 6742yd course.
He leads only by one shot from Matthew Giles (Southern California University) who had a brilliant second round of 63 for 131.
The best-placed St Andrews team player is Cameron Gray with scores of 75 and 74 for 149 and a share of 74th place in the field of 92.
Washington (537) lead the team event by eight shots from Southern California with St Andrews 25 shots adrift of the field of 17 teams on the 611 mark.
In fairness to St Andrews, it should be pointed out that they are competing among the very best players on the US college circuit after making the long trip to the West Coast of America from the cool spring temperatures of Scotland.

Jodi Ewart, ups and downs on final day of Mountain West Women's Conference Championship.

Jodi Ewart fails in hat-trick bid but is

named Player of Year for third time

Jodi Ewart, the 21-year-old Curtis Cup player from Catterick, Yorkshire, probably did not know where to laugh or cry at the conclusion of the Mountain West Women's Conference championship at Black Horse Golf Club, Seaside in California yesterday.
Jodi's last round of 78 cost her a third consecutive individual title but her college, New Mexico University, won the team title - which is all-important in US college golf - and later she became the first player to be named Mountain West Women's Conference Player of the Year for a third year in a row.
Jodi, a junior (third year) student, had rounds of 74, 73 and 78 for a total of 225 over the par-72, 6027yd course, which earned her joint fourth place after starting the final round in second place.
In difficult, windy conditions she had a double bogey 6 at the second and bogeys at the first, sixth, 11th and 18th in halves of 40 and 38. She did not have a single birdie in the third round after picking up five over the first 36 holes. She also had a double bogey 6 at the ninth in the first round.
Even a 73 in the final round would have been good enough for Jodi to complete a hat-trick of titles as all the scores went up.
Winner with a total of five-over-par 221 was Jonelle Martinez (Wyoming University) who got one hand on the title with a 70 in the first round, the best score of the championship. She followed that up with scores of 75 and 76. Jonelle actally had a double bogey in each of her three rounds but she shot 11 birdies over the 54 holes to compensate.
She won by two shots from a Jodi Ewart team-mate, Britney Choy, who scored 74, 75 and 74 for 223.
New Mexico (903) won the team title with ease from Texas Christian (917) with the University of Nevada Las Vegas third on 920 in a field of seven teams.

Wetlands, Louisiana lives up to its name!

Futures Tour event hit by bad weather

By LISA D MICKEY
LAFAYETTE, Louisiana., April 18 – The second round of the $90,000 Louisiana Pelican Classic was suspended this afternoon due to dangerous weather conditions. Seventy players completed the second round, while 72 players will return to The Wetlands Golf Course Sunday at 7:30 a.m. CDT to finish.
Barring more inclement weather, the second round is expected to be completed Sunday around 11:45 a.m. local time. Once the 36-hole cut is made, the final round is expected to start around 12:15 p.m., utilizing both the first and 10th tees.
“We’ll finish the final round tomorrow, weather permitting, but Monday is a consideration,” said Christy Barks, vice president of tournament operations for the Duramed Futures Tour. “We’re preparing for the worst and hoping for the best.”
The Wetlands was exactly that this morning after heavy rains saturated the course, making it unplayable for the original first tee times at 8 a.m. Tour officials issued a two-hour delay to allow water to drain. Standing water on the tees and landing areas of several fairways made play impossible when the day began.
By day’s end, second-year player Whitney Myers of York, Pa., held the clubhouse lead among those who have completed 36 holes. The former University of Florida Gator bounced back from a 76 on Friday to a four-under-par score of 68 today to improve from a tie for 81st into a current tie for 20th at even-par 144.
Becky Lucidi (70) of Poway, Calif., Gerina Mendoza (71) of Roswell, New Mexico, and two-time winner Stephanie George (70) of Myerstown, Pa., all moved up the leaderboard into a current clubhouse tie for second at 146 (+2).
“I feel like I actually played like a professional golfer today,” said Myers. “I was really calm and in the back of my mind, I was thinking about Liz Janangelo’s round yesterday. We all wondered how she did that [shot a 65 on a windy day]. Now, I know how it’s done.”
Myers did her Janangelo imitation when she also put together a string of five consecutive birdies in today’s second round, starting with Nos. 12 (10 feet), 13 (10 feet), 14 (1 foot), 15 (eight feet) and 16 (six feet). She hit 16 greens in regulation on a muddy day in which players were allowed to lift, clean and place the ball.
“I haven’t been making anything, so I’ve really been working on my putting,” said Myers. “Last week on our off-week, that’s all I did – just work entirely on my putting. It finally paid off today.”
Mendoza’s scorecard was decorated with circles and squares for her last five holes, with a birdie on the 14th, a bogey on the 15th, then a birdie on the 16th to again reach three under for the round. But bogeys on the 17th and 18th holes allowed her only to finish at one under for the day, improving from 64th into a tie for 43rd.
With the delayed tee times, overall tournament leader Liz Janangelo of West Hartford, Conn., was pushed back from her 2:30 p.m. start to a start at 4:30 p.m., with angry gray clouds already shrouding the low-lying course. She took par on the first hole and was in the middle of the fairway of the second hole when the suspension horns were blown.
“It’s OK,” said the former Duke University All-American. “I’ve gotta find my lucky ball mark tonight. I think I left it in the pocket of my Golftini skirt from yesterday.”
Weather: Cloudy with temperatures in mid-70s with wind between 13-18 mph. Rain beginning around 4:40 p.m. local time, with play suspended for dangerous weather at 4:50 p.m.
