Thurso's Eileen Manson, pictured right, headed the 16 match-play qualifiers on the first day of the Northern Counties women's golf championship at Nairn Golf Club today.
In windy conditions, Eileen's round of 79 - four over par and two over the CSS - was good enough to give her the No 1 seed position ahead of Pam MacKay (Royal Dornoch) and Christine McAndrew (Nairn Dunbar) who both returned 80s.
Pam gained the No 2 seed berth after a card countback.

DURAMED FUTURES TOUR REPORT

Liz Janangelo takes early

lead in Lafayette

Wind-blown players from the morning tee times came off the course in the first round of the Duramed Futures Tour's $90,000 Louisiana Pelican Classic wanting to know only one thing.
“What golf course was Liz playing today?” asked Jessica Shepley of Oakville, Ontario.
Indeed, Liz Janangelo of West Hartford, Conn., navigated her way around The Wetlands Golf Course with ease to post an opening-round score of seven-under-par 65 to take the early lead. It was a day that featured six birdies, one bogey and one eagle on her scorecard.
It also was a round that included a front-nine score of 29 (-7), which was a career-best nine-hole number for the former Duke University four-time All-American. Janangelo became the 10th member of the Tour to break 30 for nine holes. Only two other players have broken 30 on a par-36 course, including Peggy Kirsch in 1989, and Lorena Ochoa in 2002.
But setting new milestones wasn’t what was on Janangelo’s mind today. After a tie for 29th at the season-opening tournament in Winter Haven, Fla., and a missed cut two weeks ago in Daytona Beach, Fla., the 2008 LPGA Tour member was hoping only to settle her mind and get back to the kind of golf that helped her win twice on the 2007 Duramed FUTURES Tour.
“This was the first time I’ve played golf that I haven’t really cared,” she said. “I’ve put a lot of pressure on myself and today, I carried my own bag and it was just me out there – kind of like my college days. That’s what I thought about.”
The former U.S. Curtis Cup Team member played her first nine holes (the course’s back nine) at even-par 36, but the front nine was a different story. She rolled in a birdie from five feet on No. 3, holed out a pitching wedge from 120 yards for eagle on the par-4 fifth hole, and then birdied her last four holes – all from eight feet or less. She needed only 25 putts.
“I haven’t done this in a long time,” said Janangelo, who has been working with sports psychologist Bob Rotella. “I have to just believe in myself and know that I’ve been here before and that I play with some of the best players in the world every week. This is a breakthrough.”
Her round also was the number every player in the full field of 144 chased all day. Rookie Christine Song of Fullerton, Calif., and veteran Nicole Jeray of Berwyn, Ill., each carded rounds of three-under-par 69 in the morning, while Haeji Kang of Seoul, South Korea was the only player who cracked 70 in the afternoon, joining Song and Jeray in a tie for second.
Sae Hee Son of Seoul, South Korea, Samantha Richdale of Kelowna, British Columbia and Lisa Ferrero of Lodi, Calif., are tied for fifth at two-under-par 70.
“I feel like I’m confident – like everything is going to go in,” said Song, 17, whose last win was three years ago on the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA). “If I can just do the same thing tomorrow, I’ll be happy.”
Jeray, 38, used her veteran experience while playing in today’s windy conditions. The LPGA Tour member said she stayed patient, even when she hit errant shots. At least three times, she saved par from five feet or more and had two sand saves.
“It’s playing tough enough that I could have shot an 80 or a 69, just depending on what happened in the crosswinds,” said Jeray, a three-time Tour winner. “The last two holes are playing so hard into the wind that I feel like I gained two shots on the field with pars there.”
A weather watcher, Jeray said her performance benefited by knowing the location of the prevailing winds on the course and the direction of the “grain” (how the grass grows) on most of the greens.
“I know where north, south, east and west is at all times and on days like these, that matters when you’re hitting your shots,” she said.
Sometimes luck counts, too. Or, lack of luck.
Irish-born US Curtis Cup player at St Andrews last year, Alison Walshe of Westford, Mass., was at four-under par after 14 holes – only one shot off the lead -- but her tee shot on No. 15 hit the cart path at an odd angle and kicked 100 yards left. The rookie took bogey, and then bogeyed the 16th after what she called “a stupid chip.” She finished at bogey-bogey on the 17th and 18th to card an even-par 72.
“The shot on 15 was just a bad break, but half the game is luck,” she said. “And those last three holes are tough in the wind. Sometimes, it’s just a guessing game.”
There was no guesswork, however, when it came to the difficulty of the 390-yard 18th hole today. Playing dead into the wind, the par-4 hole, which is bordered down the right side and in front of the green by a water hazard, doused more than a few hopes. The 18th played as the toughest hole with a scoring average of 4.8 strokes, rendering only two birdies all day. Three of the last four holes registered as the most difficult of the first round.
A total of 12 players finished under par and a total of 26 players are at even-par 72 or better.
“It’s good to get a low score early before we have bad weather,” said Kang of the expected weekend forecast, which calls for rain and high wind on Saturday.
Weather: Mostly cloudy with temperatures in the high 70s and wind between 12-15 mph.

Jodi Ewart lying second with one

round to go in California

Curtis Cup player Jodi Ewart (New Mexico University) from Yorkshire is two shots off the pace in second place with one round to go in the Mountain West Women's Conference Championship at Bayonet-Black Horse Golf Club, Seaside in California.
Catterick Golf Club member Jodi, the defending champion, has had rounds of 74 and 73 for a three-over-par tally of 147 over the par-72, 6027yd course.
She had birdies at the third, seventh and 12th but bogeys at the first, 10th, 15th and 17th in her second round.
In her opening round, Jodi , pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, had a double bogey 6 at the ninth to set against birdies at the seventh and 13th and bogeys at the eighth and 17th.
Jonelle Martinez (Wyoming University) leads with 70 and 75 for 145.
Brooke Beeler (Texas Christian), Rebecca Helblom (New Mexico) and Therese Koelbaek (UNLV) are sharing third place on 148.

Olivia Jordan-Higgins finishes 2nd

in Big South Championship

Channel Islander Olivia Jordan-Higgins finished runner-up in the Big South Women's Championship at The Patriot Golf Club, at the quaintly-named historic town of Ninety Six, South Carolina this week.
Olivia, pictured right, from Jersey, a student at Charleston Southern University, had scores of 75, 70 and 75 for a total of 220 over a par-72 course of 5,956yd.
She finished two shots behind the title winner, Spain's Aruka Felgueroso (Coastal Carolin) with scores of 73, 69 and 76 for 218.
The pair finished well clear of a field of 45 players. The third placed player, Sara Hester (Winthrop) was eight shots behind Olivia on 228.
Hannah Coles (Radford University, Virgina), a member at Maxstoke Park Golf Club, Warwickshire, finished 12th in a field of 45 players with scores of 85, 76 and 76 for 237.
Coastal Carolina (911) won the team event ahead of Charleston Southern (929) and Winthrop (935) in a field of nine teams.

SINEAD O'SULLIVAN SEVENTH IN ATLANTIC SUN CHAMPIONSHIP

Ireland's Sinead O'Sullivan and Lucy Gould from Wales, both students at East Tennessee State University, came seventh and joint 23rd respectively in a field of 58 players for the Atlantic Sun Championship at Victoria Hills Golf Club, Deland in Florida.
Sinead had scores of 72, 76 and 76 for a total of 224 over a par-72 course of 6,056yd.
Former Welsh girls champion Ludy shot 77, 78 and 78 for 233.
Individual winner was Danielle Jackson (Stetson) with 71, 73 and 69 for 213, finishing two shots ahead of Stetson team-mate Lauren Cafe (73-71-71).
Not surprisingly with a 1-2 individual finish, Stetson also won the team title, but only by two shots from Campbell University (883) with East Tennessee State (904) third of 10 teams.

Megan Briggs wins Renfrewshire title

for fourth year in a row

Kilmacolm's 19-year-old Scotland international player Megan Briggs won the Renfrewshire women's county golf championship for the fourth year in a row at Whitecraigs Golf Club today.
The No 1 seed, Megan beat second best qualifier Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze), the 2003 title-winner and beaten finalist in 2007, by 3 and 2 in the final.
In difficult conditions, putting was the key factor. One down at the turn Carlton squared the match with a birdie 4 at the 10th. Briggs regained a one-hole lead at the 12th where her opponent three-putted and doubled it with a birdie at the 14th.
Another Briggs birdie at the 15th put her three up and virtually sealed Carlton's fate. A half at the short 16th made Briggs the Renfrewshire centenary county champion.
Both players were out in 38 and Briggs was two under par for her inward holes.
Carlton had been in sparkling three-under-par form in the morning semi-finals in which she swept aside the challenge of 10 times champion Donna Jackson (Cochrane Castle), beating her 8 and 7.
The Briggs sisters had a real tussle in the other semi-final before Megan won by two holes over 15-year-old Eilidh. Last year they met in the final. The last player to win the Renfrewshire title four years in a row was Donna Jackson from 1989 to 1992. Before that it was Shirley Lawson, before she became Mrs Huggan, from 1985 to 1988.
Megan Briggs' target must now be to equal the five successive county title achieved by Wilma Aitken (later Mrs Leburn) from 1978 to 1982.
Today's results:
Semi-finals
Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) bt Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm) 2 holes.
Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze) bt Donna Jackson (Cochrane Castle) 8 and 7.
Final
Megan Briggs bt Carlton 3 and 2.

England’s Katie Mundy wins

marathon US play-off

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
English student golfer Katie Mundy continued her love affair with US college golf when she won a marathon seven-hole sudden-death play-off to claim her fourth title from five events.
Katie, 18, from Dunwood Manor in Hampshire, has won tournament after tournament since joining Western Texas College earlier this term. Her latest victory was in the Tarleton State University Coca Cola Spring Invitational at Harbour Lakes Golf Club in Granbury, Texas.
She shot rounds of 81, in strong winds, and four-under-par 68 to tie first place – and take her place in a play-off.
“I eventually won after seven holes of sudden death where we parred five holes and bogeyed one before I managed to win the seventh hole with a par,” said Katie, pictured by courtesy of Leaderboardphotography.com
She also had the added bonus of a hole in one in the practice round!
Katie was in England’s winning team at the 2008 girls’ home internationals and was a member of the English Women’s Golf Association Under-18 Squad before starting university.

The Scots, captained by home-course player Lynne Terry, are bidding for a hat-trick of victories having won the match in 2007 and 2008. The Irish have not won the trophy since the first three years of the competition - 2000, 2001 and 2002 - but with the players who have made the trip to the classic Cruden Bay links - where Ireland won the women's home internationals title in 1980 and 2003, they will start slight favourites to take the salver back to the Emerald Isle.
Play starts at 11am on Saturday (four-balls) and Sunday (singles).

Leona Maguire leads Ping Junior

Solheim Cup points table

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Fourteen-year-old Leona Maguire from Ireland, having won the French International Lady Juniors Under-21 amateur championship at St Cloud Golf Club on Monday, now leads the European Ping Junior Solheim Cup rankings and is a virtual shoe-in for selection to the team event to be played at Aurora Country Club, Aurora, Illinois, USA, on August 18-19.
The Cavan youngster defeated Klara Spilkova from the Czech Republic at the 36th hole in the final and was equal fourth in the stroke play event.
"I played really well in both the stroke play and the match play. The final match against Klara was really tight. I made four birdies in a row and won at the 36th hole. I love to play match-play,” she said.
“My twin sister Lisa and I practise together and we help each other to develop and to raise our game. I am only 14 years old but my goal is to qualify for the Ping Junior Solheim Cup and to play against great junior golfers. That way my game will raise even more."
Leona’s identical twin sister Lisa, whom she beat in the final of the Irish women's closed amateur championship last year, tied for fourth with Leona in the stroke-play qualifying stages of the French Under-21 championship but lost to Germany’s Sophia Popov in the match play. There is now a possibility that both twins could play at this year’s prestigious junior biennial transatlantic team match play event.
With The 2011 Solheim Cup at Killeen Castle, there is also an increased chance that the twins will represent Europe at the 2011 Ping Junior Solheim Cup on home soil in Ireland.
The French international title was the second of four qualifying events for the European Ping Junior Solheim Cup team. The next qualifying events are the European Ladies’ Team Championship in Slovenia and the European girls’ team championship in Finland, which both take place from July 7-11.
The leading six players on the points table on July 13 will qualify for the team automatically while six players will receive a wild card selection from the European team captain Carin Koch of Sweden.
Leona currently leads the ranking over Klara Spilkova from the Czech Republic, followed by Spaniard Ana Fernandez de Mesa, France’s Rosanna Crepiat, Germany’s Sophia Popov and Emma Nilsson of Sweden. Lisa currently sits in ninth place.
To qualify for the European Ping Junior Solheim Cup Team, players must be European citizens born no later than 1991 and amateurs who are not members of a collegiate golf programme.

(as of April 14, 2009)

Megan Briggs top seed as she bids

for Renfrewshire title four-timer

Scotland international Megan Briggs is bidding to win the Renfrewshire women's county golf championship for a fourth year in a row at Whitecraigs Golf Club this week.
The 19-year-old Kilmacolm player, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency at last September's Women's Home Internationals at Wrexham, made a good start by leading the 16 match-play qualifiers today in cold, raw and windy conditions with a round of 74, one more than the CSS.
Megan is seeded to meet the No 2 qualifier, Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze), the 2003 champion, in Friday's final. Clare-Marie had a 75.
Third best qualifier was Donna Jackson (Cochrane Castle) with a 76. Donna, a record 10 times county champion between 1989 and 2005, was the last player to win the Renfrewshire title four years in a row. She did it from 1989 to 1992.
Megan Briggs' 15-year-old sister Eilidh, whom she beat 4 and 3 in last year's final, qualified in fourth place with a 78. That puts the Briggs girls in the same half of the draw so a repeat of last year is impossible.

Joy day for Meigle student in Colorado

Jacqueline Sneddon scores

first win in United States

Jacqueline Sneddon, a second-year student at Grand Canyon University, Arizona, has scored her first victory in the United States.
Jacqueline, from Meigle, Perthshire, kept her head after a triple bogey at the final hole in the 36-hole Maverick Invite women's college tournament at Redlands Mesa Golf Club at Grand Junction, Colorado cost her victory within the regulation distance.
That late, late slip meant Jacqueline had to go into a sudden-death play-off with Sadie Peavler (Mesa State College) who had led the Scot by eight shots with a first-round 69 over the par-72, 6452. They tied on 155 at the head of a field of 31 players, Jacqueline, pictured right, scoring 77 and 78 to Sadie's 69 and 86.
And the first hole of the play-off was the 18th hole which Miss Sneddon had messed up a few minutes earlier.
But Jacqeline made no mistake this time. She actually had a chance of a birdie but could not hole the putt although a par figure was good enough to beat her opponent and win the title.
Her previous best performance in a US women's college tournament was a joint second finish.
"It was really exciting to get a chance to play the last hole again and play it like I knew I could," said Jacqueline whose outstanding display enabled Grand Canyon to win the team title by three shots from Mesa State College in a field of six teams.
"We all played solid. It's great for our team to get a win under our belt going into our last tournament."

Scottish Golf Awareness Week

Get a Scottish Golf Card and save

50% of green fee at over 70 clubs

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY SCOTTISH GOLF UNION

To kick-start the Scottish Golf Awareness Week, the SGU and SLGA have launched the Scottish Golf Card exclusively for golf club members as an added incentive, enabling them to take advantage of a 50% reduction off standard green fees at golf clubs participating in the programme.
The new initiative has hit the ground running with over 70 clubs now accepting the Scottish Golf Card across the country, with that total increasing daily.
For just £10, the card - the first of its type launched by the SGU and SLGA - will enable club members to take advantage of great savings as well as help clubs to increase capacity on their fairways.
Scottish Golf Development Manager Andy Salmon commented: “I am delighted with the initial response to the Scottish Golf Card by both clubs and members alike. The number of clubs taking the Golf Card is increasing all the time which gives greater choice and value to golf club members.
"The benefits are twofold, in addition to this reward for membership, clubs can increase volume on their courses, so this really is a win, win situation.
“I would urge any club which is concerned about decreasing memberships and revenues to promote the card to their members and accept card holders at their course.”
He concluded: “In the current climate golf club members like everyone else are looking for added value and ways of cutting costs and the Scottish Golf Card can reap great benefits for those wanting to take a short golfing break or golfing holiday in Scotland, or for those who just like to play other courses.”
Among the fantastic courses already signed up to the initiative are:
*Marriot Dalmahoy in Edinburgh.
*The ancient links of Royal Montrose.
*The superb Murcar Links
to name but a few, with more clubs indicating they will come on board shortly.
The card can make a great gift to a friend or colleague or yourself with the whole season ahead of you.
To purchase simply phone 01334 466 477 or visit the Scottish Golf Union website to download an application form www.scottishgolf.org.
Memberships are verified with your club before the card is issued.
