Jodi, who was in a six-way tie for the lead after the first 18 holes at the University of Texas Golf Club at Austin, deviated from par only twice in her second round of 72 for 142.
She bogeyed the short second and birdied the long 11th.

Song Yi Choi gets mad and leads with

a 64 on first day of new Futures Tour

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE DURAMED FUTURES TOUR
BY LISA MICKEY
WINTER HAVEN, Florida – Third-year professional Song Yi Choi came up two shots short of qualifying for this week’s LPGA Tour tournament in Mexico on Monday, but she was right where she wanted to be in today’s first round of the Duramed FUTURES Tour season-opening event. Choi fired an eight-under-par score of 64 today to take the lead at the $100,000 Florida’s Natural Growers Charity Classic.
“I was really mad when I didn’t qualify in Mexico earlier this week, so I was focused today,” said Choi, 23, of Seoul, South Korea. “I’m pretty tired, but I was also very comfortable in today’s round.”
Choi got it going quickly at Lake Region Yacht and Country Club, draining a 20-foot birdie on the third hole, and then running in a string of four birdies on holes 5, 6, 7 and 8 – all from within six feet, except for a 50-foot bomb on the seventh hole.
The par-72, 6,176-yard course was receptive to scoring today, even with wind kicking up this afternoon on the wind-blown holes bordering Lake Hamilton. But on this first day of spring with the smell of orange blossoms in the air, Choi was steady. She rolled in a 25-footer on the 10th and a 20-footer on the 12th hole. Her only bogey came on the 14th hole with three putts from 30 feet, but the unflappable player rallied back with birdies from 15 feet and six feet on her final two holes.
“I shot a 69 and I feel like I’m playing catch-up golf,” said Janell Howland of Boise, Idaho, who played in Choi’s group today. “She just hits it close and makes a lot of putts. She’s solid.”
Playing in the afternoon, Choi hit 16 greens and 12 fairways in regulation and needed only 26 putts in today’s opening round. After the round, she admitted that finishing No. 6 on the Tour’s 2008 money list – just out of the top priority LPGA cards – made her even more determined to finish in the top five this year.
She plans to play in more LPGA Monday Qualifying Tournaments and will fly to Phoenix next week for Monday’s qualifier. But for now, Choi has her mind set on getting a top-status LPGA card, one way or another.
“I’ll forget about my round today and start a brand new day tomorrow,” she said.
Tour veteran Stephanie George of Myerstown, Pennsylvinia, grabbed the morning’s low round with a 68 (-4), carding five birdies and one bogey. The ninth-year pro said she was able to make a move today because she spent the off-season “simplifying” her swing with golf teacher Martin Hall in West Palm Beach, Fla.
“My goal was to make it as simple as possible and to also be aggressive,” said George, 30, a two-time winner on the Duramed Futures Tour and a former LPGA Tour member.
Tour rookie Kristie Smith of Perth, Australia was the first player to climb the leaderboard this morning with a three-under-par score of 69 in her opening round as a Tour professional, but she was tied later by rookie Christine Song of Fullerton, California, amateur Hannah Yun of Bradenton, Florida, Jean Reynolds of Newnan, Ga., and Tour veteran Janell Howland.
A total of 19 players carded rounds under par with 37 players finishing at even-par 72 or better.
Weather: Sunny with temperatures in low-80s with wind around 10 mph.
Family Away From Home
Third-year Duramed Futures Tour member Anastasia Kostina of Nakhabino, Russia is enjoying the comforts of home this week with a Russian host family in Lakeland, Florida. Kostina met Michael and Julia Radivilov two years ago and stayed with them in private housing last year. The couple invited her back to stay in their home this year, even though the tournament moved across the county from Lakeland to Winter Haven. It’s a good 30-to-40min commute to the tournament site each day, but Kostina doesn’t mind.
“Staying with them really feels like home,” said Kostina. “They remind me of my parents so much. They’ve never met my parents, but they talk to them all the time on Skype [an international Internet provider].”
Her Russian host family serves up familiar food, such as a “white mushroom” Russian soup, crepes and a cabbage pastry. Thanks to a satellite dish, they even watch Russian TV shows. And away from the golf course, Kostina spends time with the family listening to Russian music and reading Russian books.
Sometimes a little comfort on the road goes a long way, Kostina said.

Don’t Mess With Dan’s Little Sister
Duramed Futures Tour rookie Selanee Henderson of Apple Valley, California, can pretty much hold her own anywhere, thanks to being the little sister of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) mixed martial artist Dan Henderson.
Her big brother was a college wrestler at Arizona State University, then a two-time Greco-Roman U.S. Olympic Team wrestler in the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games before he got into the pay-per-view fighting sensation that combines martial arts, kickboxing, traditional boxing and ju jitsu.
“It’s not the fake stuff,” said Selanee. “He’s never been knocked out and he has his own Wikipedia page.”
Her brother also has endorsements in his sport and he has his own clothing brand. When asked if she is involved in his brand, little sister laughed.
“Why would I wear fighting clothes?” she said. “We’re in two different worlds. He makes a lot on endorsements and he sponsors me, but he’s keeping a tab on it.”
Strength and tenacity seems to run in the family. Selanee’s father wrestled at Long Beach State and her oldest brother wrestled at San Diego State. Growing up in a house with two brothers, the golfer said she learned to fight back whenever they “would hold me upside down and tickle me.”
Brother Dan’s next big fight is in July in Las Vegas, but Selanee admits that she hopes she’ll have to miss that one.
“It’s during the same week as the U.S. Women’s Open and I hope I’m there, instead of Vegas.”
Sorry, Dan. No harm intended.

Carolyn Cudone, winner of five straight

USGA championships, dies at the age of 90

By RHONDA GLENN of the United States Golf Association
Carolyn Cudone, a merry, gracious player and the only golfer to win five straight United States Golf Association championships, died on Thursday at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She was 90 years old.
Cudone, picture above from the USGA Museum, won the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship five times from 1968 to 1972. Of the more celebrated players who have won the Senior Women’s Amateur more than once – Dot Porter, Anne Quast Sander, Marlene Streit and Carol Semple Thompson – none touched Cudone’s five straight victories, although Thompson won four straight from 1999 to 2002.
Just one week ago, on March 12, she was inducted into the Myrtle Beach Hall of Fame.
Growing up in Staten Island, New York., Cudone was the scourge of Metropolitan women’s golf. She won the New Jersey Women's Amateur five times, 11 New Jersey stroke-play and five Women’s Metropolitan Golf Association match-play titles.
During the 1950s and early 1960s, when women’s amateur golf garnered big headlines, Cudone captured a number of important titles, including the 1958 North & South Women’s Amateur, the 1960 Women’s Eastern Amateur and the 1962 Hollywood International Four-Ball with her fellow Met player, Cookie Swift Berger, as her partner.
Cudone was a member of the 1956 USA Curtis Cup team, where she clinched her lone match, a foursomes encounter with her partner Mary Ann Downey against Janette Robertson and Veronica Anstey, 6 and 4.
It was one of only four points the USA managed in a losing cause against Great Britain and Ireland’s six points.
A strong player, Cudone smacked her fairway woods in shots that screamed low off the clubface, then rose and dropped to the green, much like Patty Berg, who Cudone somewhat matched in her physical stature.
While she assembled a wonderful collection of titles, Cudone never quite cracked the elite group of women amateurs of her era: JoAnne Gunderson, Barbara McIntire, Anne Quast and Barbara Romack. Her nemesis was the feisty Polly Riley. A canny match-play specialist, Riley knocked Cudone out of the semi-finals of the 1953 US Women’s Amateur, beat her in the third round of that championship in 1955 and eliminated her in the fourth round in 1958.
Cudone continued to chase the game’s elite, consistently playing in the national championships and, with her husband Philip, spending the winter on the Florida Orange Blossom circuit. It was as a senior golfer, however, that Cudone proved herself. She played in the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur 10 times, won five of the titles and twice finished as runner-up.
Time dulls her achievements a bit, and Cudone herself couldn’t recall them clearly in an interview several years ago. Her double-digit win in 1968 caused her to say, “I did? By 10 shots? Wow, that’s pretty good.”
In her later years, Cudone lived in Myrtle Beach, where she had settled with her late husband. She founded the Myrtle Beach Junior Golf Program in 1981 and led the organization for 21 years before turning over the reins at the age of 83.
She was a gracious winner and a cheerful loser who loved to laugh.

Hawaii doing, Ami? Very well

with her first top 20 US finish

Ami Storey from Ponteland Golf Club, six miles northwest of Newcastle, is beginning to find her feet on the United States college golf circuit - and relishing trips to far away places such as Hawaii!
A freshman student at Kansas State University, young Ami, pictured right, has achieved her first top-20 finish in the States with a joint 17th final placing in a field of 53 for the Dr Donnis Thompson Invitational at Kaneohe Klipper Golf Club, Honolulu.
Over a 5,907, par-72 course, Ami started well but tired in hotter March temperatures than she is used to in her native North-east of England. She had rounds of 74, 77 and 81 for a total of 232.
Noticeable too that the scores of the first and second, Kayla Mortellaro (Idaho University) and Lauren Johnson (Texas A&M), both deteriorated. Their first-round scores were easily their best.
Mortellaro scored 69-75-75 for three-over 219, one ahead of Johnson with 71-76-73.
Texas A&M (907) won the team event ahead of Idaho (913) and Indiana (917) with Kansas State (924) finished sixth of 10.
So a great trip for Ami Storey. First time in Hawaii and first time in top 20.

Peter Latimer named Old Dominion

Conference's Player of Week

Peter Latimer from Markinch, a student at Guilford College, Greensboro in North Carolina, has been named Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Week after top-scoring for his college team who finished third in the Minnesota State Spring Invitational.
Latimer, pictured, a two-time first team All-ODAC pick in golf, paced the Quakers with rounds of 79 and 72 for a 151 total and an eighth-place finish.
The Scot's performance marked his third top-10 finish of the 2008-2009 college golf season and lowered his stroke average to a team-best 75.19 in 16 rounds. This marks Latimer's sixth ODAC Player of the Week award.
Guilford's third-place finish in the Minnesota State Spring Invitational was its sixth top-five finish in as many tournaments.

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Exit Suzie Laing (Ladies Golf Club), Scottish international golfer.
Enter, stage right, Susannah Laing, "female actor; location: California."

She also spent four years at the University of San Francisco, then played professional golf for a spell on the West Coast of the States and also the Futures Tour.
Thereafter, the trail went cold, stone cold until one evening I was trawling the websites of the world when I came across the website "castingcallpro" and, lo and behold, there was our Suzie's CV, and professionally-taken picture (see above, right) by Aimee Bernard.
Susannah, to use her stage name, is doing commercials and film work in America
The website says she gained BA in "Media & Film" at San Francisco University and she has also studied acting at Strathclyde University.
She has appeared at the Mirren Theatre in a Stuart Paton production, "Passing Places."
Susannah Laing will have her 28th birthday next Wednesday, March 25.

Michelle Wie signs for IMG

PRESS RELEASE
IMG, the world’s premier sports, entertainment and media company, announced today that LPGA Tour professional Michelle Wie has signed with the company for exclusive worldwide management and marketing representation.
Although just 19-years old, Wie has been the centre of attention in the golf world for many years after a prolific amateur career that saw her set a number of records for her accomplishments at a very young age.
She has also earned a number of other important distinctions in the game including being the fourth female, and youngest ever, to play in a US PGA Tour (men's) event in 2004 as well as becoming the first female player to reach the quarter-finals of the US Men’s Public Links championship in 2005, where she lost to the eventual champion, Clay Ogden.
Wie holds the record for the lowest round shot by a female in a US PGA Tour event, scoring rounds of 68 in both the 2004 and 2006 Sony Opens, becoming the first female to register a round under 70 on the US PGA Tour in the process. In May, 2006, at age 16, she also became the first female medalist in a local qualifier for the Men’s U.S. Open.
“I’m very excited about this season which represents a fresh new start for me,” said Wie. “There is such great talent and competition on the LPGA Tour and my focus is on building the foundation for a long and successful career, and of course, getting that first tournament win. I believe that IMG, with all of their resources worldwide and achievements in professional golf, will help me reach those goals.”
Born October 11, 1989 in Honolulu, Hawaii, Wie began playing golf at the age of four and her rise was meteoric. In October, 2005, just a week shy of her 16th birthday, Wie turned professional, and last December, earned full playing status for the 2009 season by finishing in a tie for seventh place at the LPGA Tour Final Qualifying Tournament.
“We have all watched the rise in popularity of women’s golf, and Michelle Wie certainly is a prime example of the outstanding talent on the LPGA Tour and the bright future of the sport,” said Clarke Jones, Senior Vice President, Global Director Golf Clients for IMG.
“Michelle is an amazing talent and IMG is delighted to be working with her and her family to provide the best management and marketing support in the world, allowing her to focus on her top priority – competing week in and week out on the golf course.”

R&A joins forces with Scottish Golf to

keep clubs on course for Golf Week

The R&A has joined forces with Scottish Golf by providing a £10,000 cash boost to help fund the Scottish Golf Awareness Week, aimed at helping clubs to promote their facilities and increase adult golf club membership across the country.
The R&A’s support announced today will help the initiative target potential golf club members and highlight the many benefits of golf club membership as well as provide clubs with a toolkit of information devised to help them maximise opportunities to market their facilities.
The national campaign, the first initiative of its kind launched by the Scottish Golf Union and Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association, will commence the week following the US Masters and clubs across the country are being encouraged to get involved, although activity does not need to be restricted to that week alone.
It is hoped that the golf week or ‘Love Golf – Join the Club’ initiative will kick start the 2009 season and beyond, in seeking to attract much needed members to maintain the health of the game in the home of golf.
The cash injection from golf’s world rules and development body is very welcome in the current challenging economic climate affecting industries across the globe as well as the sport and leisure sectors.
Duncan Weir, pictured above, R&A Director of Golf Development said, “The R&A sees it as one of its roles to not only encourage people to play golf but to join clubs and this is why we decided to offer financial support towards this Golf week initiative.
Scotland as the home of golf is unique in golfing terms and we are keen to see golfers joining clubs and maintaining the strong and vibrant club scene that so many have enjoyed for so many years.”
Andy Salmon, Scottish Golf Development Manager who is driving this innovative campaign, added, “We are delighted that The R&A has lent its support to this new initiative to encourage nomadic golfers to join golf clubs.
“This backing enables us to deliver our plans and provide a significant level of support to our affiliated clubs. There is no question that strong clubs are the key to a healthy sport and we are excited about the prospects for Golf Awareness Week.”
Case studies helping clubs to share best practice as part of the information pack available on the ‘Love Golf – Join the Club’ campaign is available by visiting the Scottish Golf website http://www.scottishgolf.org/

Three English players accept Faldo invites

to play at Mission Hills in China event

Three English golfers have accepted invitations from Nick Faldo to play in the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final, which tees off at Mission Hills Golf Club in China on March 25.
They are Steven Brown, Thomas Clements and Hannah Barwood.
Brown, from Chobham, Surrey, was the winner of the 2008 Faldo Series Grand Final held last October in Brazil.
Thomas Clements is another Faldo Series winner.
Hannah Barwood is the current English women's amateur champion.
They will join 60 players from 12 different Asian countries at Mission Hills where they will not only compete over 54 holes on the Faldo Course but will also spend time with Nick Faldo himself.

Commented Faldo: “I’m delighted that we are now able to offer opportunities for players to experience a little of what it is like to compete in different nations with sometimes very different golfing conditions. These kinds of experiences give these young players – be they from Asia, South America or Europe – a taste for what life can be like as professional golfers in what is becoming an increasingly international game. I wish them the best of luck and look forward to seeing them again at Mission Hills.”

Quality field for Leveret Trophy

at Formby Ladies, Lancashire

By FIONA ANDERSON (former Scottish women's amateur champion and organiser of the Leveret Trophy tournament, pictured right)

The 36-hole ladies' open scratch event for the Leveret Trophy at Formby Ladies (Lancashire) on Saturday, March 28 has attracted a high-class, quality field.
On account of the restricted daylight hours the entry is limited to 54 players and the handicaps range from a staggering +4 to 3.
Naomi Edwards (Ganton) off +4, a Curtis Cup player, past English Ladies champion and current Yorkshire champion, is drawn to play with Emma Brown nee Duggleby, off +3. Emma, is also a Curtis Cup player & past English, British and Yorkshire champion but neither of these accomplished players has succeeded in winning the Leveret Trophy, yet!
Out to stop them, will be defending champion Rachel Connor (Manchester), +1, who feels the Leveret is a great opener to the domestic season.
Local player, Cori Lee, +1 of the West Lancashire Ladies, winner in 2006, is keen to get back to form after injury and sees this as the ideal opportunity.
Kelly Tidy +1 from Royal Birkdale is out to impress the Great Britain & Ireland selectors with a good performance over a course she knows well. Kelly, is drawn with another very promising, young player, 15-year-old, Alex Peters, +2 from Notts Ladies.
Playing in her third Leveret, Alex is keen to enjoy some stern competition before going to Paris this Easter with the England team for the French Under-21 girls' open championship. Altogether, there are 21 players with handicaps of scratch or better entered this year.
Formby Ladies are delighted to have such a strong field of English and Welsh players. It is also heartening to see the next generation of golfers competing such as Bronte Law (Bramhall), Elizabeth Mallett (Sutton Coldfield Ladies) and Brogan Townend, (Pleasington) who are all members of the England team competing in the 2009 SLGA Under-16 girls' open stroke-play at Craigielaw, near Ednburgh in April. They will be keen to show that it won’t be long before they, too, are ready to ‘step up to the plate’.
Sadly, those with handicaps above 3.1 have been balloted out, showing just how highly the Leveret Trophy is rated by many of our top lady amateurs. The winner this year will certainly be a worthy champion.
Any spectators are welcome to attend – a copy of the draw is published on our website at http://www.formbyladiesgolfclub.co.uk/ - Leveret Trophy - if there is anyone you particularly want watch then please come along.

Nicola Race finishes second in

Lion Invitational in Texas

Nicola Race (Redlands Community College, El Reno, Oklahoma) finished second in the Lion Invitational women's college tournament this week at Tanglewood Resort, Pottsboro in Texas.]
Over a par-72, 5,914yd course, Nicola, pictured right, from Witham, Essex, had rounds of 81 and 73 for 154, two shots behind the winner, Raelyn Smith (Angelo State) who scored 80 and 72.
Judging by the fact that nobody in the field of 87 broke 80 in the first round, it must have been a bad weather, probably high winds, of which Texas gets more than its fair share.
Nicola did finish four shots ahead of the joint-third pair and her effort helped Redlands win the team title at the head of a field of 16 colleges.
LEADING INDIVIDUAL TOTALS
Par 144 (2 x 72) 5914yd

Andrew Cooley finishes joint 11th

at Barona Creek despite triple 7

Andrew Cooley (San Diego State University) from Surrey and Ayrshire's Euan Brown (St Mary's-California) finished joint 11th and 65th respectively in the Barona Collegiate Cup at Barona Creek Golf Club, California over a very long course of some 7,393yd with a par of 72.
Despite the length of the lay-out, Cooley contrived to shoot 12 birdies over his final 36 holes after getting only one in his first circuit.
Cooley had rounds of 73, 70 and 72 for one-under-par 215, 12 shots behind the winner, Dustin Morris (Colorado State) who scored 70, 67 and 66 to win by three from Steve Saunders (New Mexico) (69-69-68).
Back to Master Cooley. His final par-matching round contained, remarkably a triple bogey 7 at the eighth and single shots dropped at the second and seventh. He balanced this with birdies at the first, sixth,1 3th, 14th and 16th.
Euan Brown, also a freshman, scored 79, 84 and 86 for 249. He had one birdie in 54 holes but, sadly, two triple bogeys and three double bogeys.
Colorado State (1051) took the team title ahead of San Diego State (1057) and New Mexico (1069) with San Diego third on 1076.
St Mary's-California (1131) came eight of 10.

Sally Watson finishes third in

Kathy Whitworth Invitational

Curtis Cup player Sally Watson today achieved her best tournament performance since she came back into action following a major knee operation a few days after she played for Great Britain & Ireland against the United States over the Old Course, St Andrews late May last year.
Sally, who will be 18 in July and is a student at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy, Bradenton, Florida, finished third in the Kathy Whitworth Invitational which drew a field of 72 of the best girl golfers in America and beyond to the Mira Vista Country Club, Fort Worth, Texas.

Rah scored 69 and 71, Lee a pair of 70s. Lee was declared the winner, the better second round being the tie-breaker.
Former Irish girls champion Stephanie Meadow, a student at the International Junior Golf Academy, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina tied for fourth place with scores of 73 and 70 for 153.
Former world tennis ace Ivan Lendl's daughters, Daniela (79-78) and Isabelle (79-80), finished on 157 and 159 respectively.

Hannah Burke finishes jt

6th in Baylor Invitational

Hannah Burke (Baylor University, Texas) faded from joint third to a final position of joint sixth in a field of 84 for the Baylor Spring Invitational women's college tournament at Twin Rivers Golf Club, Waco in Texas.
Hannah, pictured, followed an opening 77 with a one-over-par 73 which suggested she was coming into form at just the right time to win her home university's golf tournament.
But it was not to be. The Hertfordshire player who is in the Ladies Golf Union preliminary selection squad for this summer's Vagliano Trophy match between GB&I and the holders, the Continent of Europe, in Hamburg, finished with a round of 79 for a total of 13-over--par 229.
She had a dismal outward half of 41 with bogeys at the first, third, fifth, sixth and ninth. Things got worse at the 11th where she had a double bogey 6. A birdie at the 13th was only a brief glimmer in the gloom as she had another bogey at the 14th before finished with her best run of consecutive pars (4) for 38 home.
Stacey Rodger, from Mile Oak, Sussex and a freshman student at Missouri State University, improved from joint 32nd to a final position of joint 2oth with a round of 76 for 234. Earlier she had scored 78 and 80.
Stacey had birdies at the second, 12th, 15th and 17th in her final round but also had bogeys at the fourth, fifth, seventh, ninth (out in 39), 13th, 14th, 17th and 18th. In fact, she had only six pars in her final 18 holes.
But she avoided the disasters of the first round (a quadruple bogey 8) and the second round (a double bogey 6).
Katie Ackerson (Southern Methodist) was the individual winner with scores of 74, 74 and 75 for 223 over a par-72 course of 6,349yd.
Suteera Chanachai (New Mexico State) was runner-up on 225 with scores of 76, 74 and 75.
Pennapa Pulsawath (Iowa State) came third on 227 with rounds of 76, 74 and 77.
Illinois State (927) won the team title ahead of New Mexico State (931) with Baylor and Missouri State tieing for third place on 933 in a field of 14 teams.

Just champion! That's how Callum Trahan was feeling after the presentation ceremony at Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Banchory boy Callum Trahan wins play-off

for first title on International Junior Tour

Callum Trahan from Banchory, a member of Murcar Links Golf Club and a current student of the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, has scored his first victory on the US-based International Junior Golf Tour.
Competing in the Boys' 16 to 19 years Division over 36 holes at the Port Royal Plantation Resort, Hilton Head, Trahan triumphed in a play-off at posting a three-over-par total of 147.
After the opening round he found himself a little disappointed with a round of six-over-par 80. Starting Sunday’s round, Trahan was six stroke off the lead. Not to be discouraged the Scot came out firing on all cylinders - four birdies and an eagle in his first
nine holes for a five-under-par front nine.
Callum maintained his momentum till the end improving on his first-round 80 by a remarkable 13 shots with a 67 for 147.
“Coming into today’s round, I knew I had to keep the ball in play. After my front nine, I knew I still had to scramble to get to the fron. I had to make some putts and I would have a chance at victory.”
In the end, Trahan did enough to tie with fellow Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy classmate Greg Schmaus from Uppder Saddle River, New Jersey who shot 75 and 72 for 147.
Out they went again in a sudden-death play-off. After the first hole was halved in par, Trahan sank a 15ft putt for a winning par at the second hole.
Rounding out the top three was Scott Simpson of Morrison, Illinois with consistent rounds of 74 and 75 for 149.
Trahan received a bonus prize for having the lowest boys' round - a J Lindeberg White Slater Belt from the IJGT's newest sponsor, J Lindeberg.
Callum will not automatically qualify for a place in the International Junior Golf Tour's Champion of Champions' tournament, to be held in Florida in May.
It's a dramatic change of fortunes for Trahan who, only the week or so before the tournament, was hit in the face by an errant golf ball and had to have 10 stitches to repair the wound.

Lucky Neil gets to play Pinehurst

... but long course costs him a 76

North Berwick's Neil Henderson (Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia) was lying in joint 53rd position after a first-round 76 in the Pinehurst Intercollegiate over the Pinehurst No 8 course, North Carolina.
Lucky Neil, a former Scottish schoolboys champion and also winner of the Scottish junior champion of champions competition before he to be able to play any of the Pinehurst courses, originally designed by Donald Ross after he emigrated from Dornoch!
That's one thing about the US college golf circuit. Never mind the scores - look at the courses they are getting to play, and the places they see!
Neil, pictured above, started at the 10th and bogeyed that hole, also the 14th, the first and the seventh before he had a double bogey 5 at the short eighth and another shot dropped at the ninth in halves, as he played them, of 36 and 40 over a par-72 course of just over 7,000yd - much longer than amateurs usually are asked to play in this country.
Leading after 18 holes of this scheduled three-round tournament was Nathan Sutherland (Miami of Ohio by one shot from Tommy McDonagh (Penn State).
LATER NEWS
Neil Henderson began his second round today at the 10th and bogeyed that hole again before birdieing the 12th but running up a double bogey 6 at the 14th.

English seniors halve with Cambridge University

at Royal Worlington ... but they cut it rather fine

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
England’s seniors were held to a draw in their annual match against the Cambridge University ladies at Royal Worlington in Suffolk.
The seniors have an excellent record in this event, having lost only one fixture since the match started in the mid-1990s. On this occasion, though, they cut it rather fine – securing the half with the last putt of the day.
Team captain Jan Stockham commented: “As some of the university girls had longer handicaps than the senior ladies we gave them a start of between one and four-up for the afternoon singles. This was probably a misjudgement as the girls had already played most of their matches and are coming to the end of their season.”
The morning foursomes, played over nine holes, were halved with 1½ points apiece. In the singles, Jo Rumsey of Essex won a tight battle on the last green while Sue Orwell of Cambs & Hunts secured a second point. However, the university girls edged ahead with three singles wins and the outcome of the match depended on the last game on the course.
Suffolk’s Lottie Edmunds delivered the seniors’ crucial point when she won her match on the last green. The seniors’ team was completed by Jo Ashmore of Norfolk, Polly Brown of Cambs & Hunts and Elaine James of Bedfordshire.
Results (English seniors’ names first).
Foursomes (1 1/2-1 1/2)
Jo Rumsey & Jo Ashmore lost to Louisa Tarn & Leanne Mullen 1 hole.
Lottie Edmunds & Polly Brown bt Katie Taylor & Kate O’Donnell 2 holes.
Elaine James & Sue Orwell halved with Etta Martin Smith & Alexia Sohet
Singles (3-3)
Rumsey bt Tarn 1 hole.
Ashmore lost to Mullen 2 and 1.
Edmunds bt Taylor 2 holes.
Brown lost to O’Donnell 5 and 4.

In addition to providing additional practice for players competing in the Under-18 Inter-provincials at Easter, Woodenbridge has taken the opportunity to revive its very popular Glam-Am that ran so successfully throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

A two-tee start sees Ireland’s elite tee off early on Sunday morning and after lunch, two players are joined by a lady and man from Woodenbridge in a team event, with the players keeping their own score for the 36-hole Scratch Cup.

After multiple outings in the Milltown mixed foursomes, Bob Moran and Pauline Martin initiated the annual event in the early 1980s and both will grace the field with their presence on Sunday.
Woodenbridge, celebrating its 125th year anniversary, has had its share of success on the women’s amateur stage over the years. In 1956, Rose Bayly honoured the club with her first of two international caps, followed by Denise McCarthy throughout the 1980s and 1990s and more recently, Louise Mernagh with girls' international honours.
The four teams participating in the Girls Inter-provincials in mid-April are well represented and are joined by leading amateurs Gillian O’Leary, Anne McCormack and Sarah Cunningham to name but a few.

Janice Florence had 28 consecutive

title wins at Oldmeldrum

Just to sign off our series on players who have won consecutive club titles.
We told you last week about Pat Shepherd who won 30 in a row at Turriff and 33 in all.
Oldmeldrum Golf Club member Mike Pocock has now supplied us what should be the final piece in the jigsaw - for the moment.
Janice Florence, pictured right, now the head greenkeeper at Inchmarlo Golf Resort, won the Oldmeldrum ladies club championship 28 times in a row from 1973 to 2000. She then won it again in 2005, 2007 and 2008, making 31 in all.
The coincidental link between Pat Shepherd and Janice Florence is that it was Janice who ended Pat's consecutive title run at Turriff.

St Andrews University invited to

play in US college tournament

FROM THE SCOTTISH UNIVERSITIES SPORTS WEBSITE
A top team of student golfers from St Andrews will fly the flag for Britain and Europe when they take part in a major American college golf tournament next month.
The University of St Andrews team will be the only non-US representatives competing in the 2009 US Intercollegiate which takes place at Stanford University, California in April.
The invitation to St Andrews to go head to head with the best college golfers in the States is being seen as a major feather in the cap of Scottish university sport.
St Andrews is one of only a handful of non-US universities ever asked to take part in the prestigious college tournament which in the past has witnessed performances from such aspiring talents as Tiger Woods, Tom Watson and Notah Begay.
The Fife team of Will Wrisedale, Steve Pointon, Mike Gray, John Cork and Cammy Gray will be up against the cream of young American talent from Arizona, California, Oregon and Texas.
Travelling with the Scottish team will be University of St Andrews Director of Sport and Exercise Stephen Stewart and team head coach Steve North of Braemar Golf, who is the Director of Instruction at the St Andrews Links Golf Academy where the university players are coached in the state of the art golf academy..
Stephen Stewart said: “It’s a huge honour to be invited to Stanford and a fantastic opportunity for our lads to pit themselves against some of the most talented young golfers in the world.
“It’s very rare for a non-US team to get the chance to compete in this tournament. We will learn a lot and savour the experience - but our aim is to compete and show that Scottish university golf is there on merit.
“We’re got a really good team, a great team spirit and can’t wait to fly the flag for St Andrews and Scottish golf in front of American crowds.
“We’re really grateful to Braemar Golf for giving our head coach Steve North the time to travel out to Stanford with the team.”
A total of 17 college golf teams will line up for the 2009 US Intercollegiate which will be played at the par-70, 6742-yard Stanford Golf Course on April 18 and 19.

He was heading for a creditable par-matching round of 72 until he ran up a double-bogey 5 at the short 17th.
James Byrne (Arizona State) from Banchory got back on track with a 73 - birdies at the 17th and 18th - after an uncharacteristic first round of 81. James was in joint 67th place before Sunday's play.
Gavin Reid (Southern California) from Ballynahinch, Northern Ireland had a bad day with one triple bogey and two double bogeys in halves of 44 and 41 adding up to an 85 and 79th place in a field of 80 after 36 holes.
