USGA name Noreen Mohler

as captain for 2010

Curtis Cup match

The United States Golf Association announced this week that 55-year-old Noreen Friel Mohler from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania will captain the American team against Great Britain & Ireland in the next Curtis Cup match.
It will be held at Essex County Club, Manchester in Massachusetts in June 2010.
Mohler, as Noreen Uihleen, played in the winning United States team in the 1978 Curtis Cup match at The Apawamis Club, Rye in New York State, where the scoreline was 12-6 in favour of the home team.
Noreen lost to Mary Everard 7 and 6 in the first-day singles but teamed up with Judy Oliver to beat Julia Greenhalgh and Vanessa Marvin 4 and 3 in the foursomes on the second day when she halved her singles tie with Everard.
Mary McKenna, who will captain the GB&I team in 2010, also played in the 1978 match in which the team captains were Helen Wilson (US) and Carol Comboy (GB&I). In all, Mary played in nine Curtis Cup matches betwen 1970 and 1986.
Noreen turned professional and played on the LPGA Tour in 1984 and 1985 before becoming a restaurant owner and seeking reinstatement as an amateur golfer.
She virtually gave up competitive golf for the next 20 years before returning to the fray in 2006 in mid-amateur and seniors' championships.

FROM THE USGA WEBSITE:
“This is the highest honour that I have ever received in my golfing career,” said Mohler. “I am honoured, humbled and excited about this opportunity. It was the thrill of a lifetime to play in the Curtis Cup, and I’m sure that it will be a life-changing experience as a captain.”
Mohler was a semi-finalist in the 1975 US Women’s Amateur Championship and has played in five US Women’s Opens.
After stepping away from her playing career for a number of years to concentrate on her family and business affairs, she returned to the game in 2006 and reached the quarter-finals of the 2007 USGA Women’s Senior Amateur Championship and the semi-finals of the 2008 US Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.
Born in Woburn, Massachusetts, Mohler is a three-time Massachusetts State Women’s Amateur Champion (1973, 1980, 1981). She is also the Co-Chairman of the Marshals Committee for the 2009 U.S. Women’s Open, which will be held at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pennsylviania from July 6-12.

Meet the original Milky Bar

Kid as he is today ... living

at Hacienda del Alamo

Golf Resort in Spain

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Here's your starter for 10. What is the link between the Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Festival and The Milky Bar Kid?
Answer: The original boy actor who played The Milky Bar Kid in the television commercial in the 1960s was Terry Brooks ... and he has a villa at the five-star Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort.
I was introduced to Terry during the 2nd Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Festival by Director of Golf Billy Sim in the palatial resort golf clubhouse.
And this is the picture I took of The Milky Bar Kid as he looks today. Pity I can't display Terry as he was in the 1960s. But those of you of my vintage will remember him.
Apparently, he went into the building business once he grew too old to be The Milky Bar Kid.
FROM WIKEPAEDIA
The Milkybar Kid has been used in television advertising promoting Nestlé Milkybar in the countries where it is sold. The Milkybar Kid is a blonde, spectacle-wearing young boy, usually dressed as a cowboy, whose catch phrase is "The Milkybars are on me!". The advertisements usually take place in a Wild West setting. Both live-action and animated ads have been produced. In the UK and Australia the advertisements were originally accompanied by a jingle extolling "the goodness that's in Milky Bar."
In more recent revivals of the campaign, probably due to tighter advertising regulations, the jingle has been revised to refer to "the good taste that's in Milkybar". The pronunciation of the company's name has also changed from "nessul" to the more correct "ness-lay".
The Milkybar Kid made his debut in 1961 and has been played by a number of actors down through the years. Sam Dolan is the incumbent.

Another top 10 finish by Katy
McNicoll at Kiawah Island

Carnoustie's Katy McNicoll, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, a student at Lynn University, Boca Raton in Florida, tied for eighth place with a pair of 74s for 148 in the Tusculum/Kiawah Island Intercollegiate women's tournament at Cougar Point Golf Club, South Carolina.
It was Katy's third top-10 tournament finish in a row. Her 148 total was the Scot's 2008-2009 college season best and just three shots away from equalling her US college career low.
Today is Katy's 21st birthday.
Joanna Coe (Rollins) won the individual hours with scores of 68 and 70 for a six-under-par total of 138 over the 5,876yd par-72 course.
Antrim's Charlene Reid (Pfeiffer) had scores of 76 and 76 for 149 and a share of 11th place.
Carley Warrington (Belmont Abbey) from Derbyshire tied for 29th place in the field of 84 with rounds of 79 and 78 for 157.

International Junior Golf Academy students score

Young Brits Currie and

Kelly win age-group

titles at Kiawah Island

Two young British golfers, students at the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, both scored victories at the same International Junior Golf Tour competition at the famous Kiawah Island Resort, near Charleston at the weekend.
The Turtle Point Course was the site of the opening round, while the final 26 holes were
played over the Ocean Course, the 1991 Ryder Cup venue and named "America's Toughest Resort Course."
Soggy conditions along with narrow fairways, water hazards, and plenty of out-of-bounds areas tested players' accuracy and determination in the opening round. On Sunday at the Ocean Course, they were confronted with meandering lagoons, pristine marshlands, and large waste bunkers accompanied by firm, fast greens and strong ocean winds challenged players' ball- striking.
Monday’s final-round featured plentiful sunshine and calm winds, giving players an opportunity to shoot lower scores at a tough venue.
James Currie from Worcester, England cruised to a nine-shot victory in the Boys' 16 to 19 years division. It his first ever victory on the International Junior Golf Tour.
Currie 's emphatic win qualifies him for the Rice Planters Amateur tournament.
After opening with a one 1-over-par 73 at Turtle Point, James stood two shots back of the lead. Currie would back his 73 up with an impressive 4-over-par 76 in blustery conditions at the Ocean Course, giving him a six shot advantage heading into the final-round.
James would never look back as he cruised to a nine shot victory with a
closing 74, giving him a tournament total of 223.
Currie accredited his win to preparation leading up to the tournament and keeping the ball in play all weekend. James had this to say after his round on Monday;
“It feels good to win because I was not playing well coming into this weekend’s tournament. I played in this event last year, so I knew coming into it that I had to keep the ball in play, play sensible, and keep the ball low if I was going to score well.
"All of my coaches (at the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy) really helped me prepare for this event. They had me practising a lot of bunker shots, chips and putts from off the green which I used a lot and really helped me feel in control out there.”
Second place honours went to Yifan Liu (HH IJGA) of Guangzhou, China who shot consistent rounds of 77, 78 and 77 for a 16-over-par 232 total. In third was Charles Valluzzo of Mt Pleasant, South Carolina, who finished one shot back of Liu with a tournament total of 233.
Kelly Miller, picture above by courtesy of Tom Ward Photography, from Llanrhystud, Wales - like James Currie a resident student at the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy - won the Girls' 19 and Under years Division even more emphatically than Currie.
She shot rounds of 78, 77 and 84 for a total of 239, 23 over par in the so testing conditions, but still good enough to see her finish 14 shots clear of the field.
Consistency throughout all aspects of her game helped Kelly on such windy weekend, where scores were anything but consistent for the rest of the field.
Minami Levonowich of Hilton Head Island, SC finished second after a final-round 81 gave her a 253 tournament total.
*The International Junior Golf Tour was founded in 1995 for golfers aged 11 to 19 years. Its purpose is to provide aspiring collegiate players the opportunity to compete in a series of events against the highest quality U.S. and international competition. Nearly 2000 junior golfers compete on the IJGT, representing 45 states and over 30 countries. KIAWAH ISLAND, SC—

Christel's Australian sparkle
gives her Rookie of Year lead

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
LET rookie Christel Boeljon, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, sparkled with two fine finishes early this season in Australia.
The 21-year-old from Beverwijk in the Netherlands grabbed the lead in the race for the 2009 Ryder Cup Wales Rookie of the Year trophy with a tie for 41st at the ANZ Ladies Masters and a joint 13th finish at the Australian Open.
Her earnings of €5,476.47 from two appearances gave her the early advantage over South Korean rookie Hee-Kyung Seo, who only played at the ANZ Ladies Masters, where she tied for 20th position. As a third year member of the KLPGA, Seo won the Saint Four Ladies Masters in November last year, which was a co-sanctioned event with the LET. She is classed as a rookie even though she won six events on the KLPGA last year.
Boeljon earned her full LET card in January by finishing in fourth place at Final Q-School and she said that her performances in Australia would give her added confidence for the rest of the season.
“I think for the first two tournaments as a professional I did a good job. I always want more and want to be better but considering it’s only my first two tournaments and especially at Metropolitan, I did pretty well. It gives me a lot of confidence to know that I can play with these girls and do well.”
She said that she would give her performance seven or eight out of ten and thinks that she has the capacity to become the first rookie winner on tour since Finland’s Minea Blomqvist won the 2004 OTP Bank Ladies Central European Open, in Hungary.
“I haven’t really set any goals for the season. I just wanted to play these two tournaments and see how everything went,” she said. “Of course I think I can win but doing so is another thing. I think I can but it’s going to be hard and I’ll have to practise hard.”
Boeljon plans to spend some time practising in Spain over the next eight weeks and may return to La Manga in Murcia, where she recently attended Qualifying School. She will prepare for the Comunitat Valenciana European Nations Golf Cup which takes place at La Sella Resort in Alicante, Spain, from April 23 to 26.
Along with compatriot Marjet van der Graaff, a second year LET player, she will represent the Netherlands in the 20-nation team event. The two players know each other well.
“I don’t live all that far from Marjet and I still practise with the amateur team,” she commented, adding that she still receives beneficial support from the Dutch Federation. Van der Graaff has experience of playing in the event, having finished in fourth place representing the Netherlands with amateur Marieke Nivard on the same course last year.
Together the two young talents have a strong chance of success and Boeljon could prove the rookie to watch this year.

2nd Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Festival

Charlie Douglass and Hayley Davis

both win two titles in Spain

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
(Better late than never! The Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort Internet service crashed for a second time on Tuesday and was still not back on line by the time I departed near lunchtime today!)
Charlie Douglass, the left-handed Brocket Hall scratch player, and 16-year-old Hayley Davis, who plays off one at Ferndown, won the Hacienda del Alamo Ladies Open and Under-16 girls’ titles respectively as the curtain rang down on the 2nd Hacienda del Alamo Women’s Winter Golf Festival on a day of glorious Spanish sunshine at the five-star Murcia resort.
It was a case of golfing déjà vu. Charlie and Hayley also captured the Murcia Ladies Open and Under-16 championships when the Festival teed off last Thursday and Friday.
Charlie won the ladies’ championship trophy and a 400 Euros voucher by a single shot in a tight finish with English girl international Holly Clyburn, a +1 player at Woodhall Spa, and Charlotte Dalton (Ladbrook Park).
Douglass scored 73 and 75 for a four-over-par total of 148 over the long and so testing Dave Thomas-designed course which has several par-4s where the majority of lady competitors cannot get home in two shots.
“Much as I would like to come back to next year’s Festival, because I think it is a great idea, I hope to go to the Ladies European Tour School, turn pro and be playing golf for a living in 2010,” said Miss Douglass
Clyburn had rounds of 76 and 73 for 149, the same score as Dalton who scored 75 and 74 and lost out for the second-placed 200 Euros voucher having the poorer second round.
It was worth more for Dalton to win the top handicap prize of 200 Euros with a net total of 145 off two of a handicap so third scratch voucher prize worth 100 Euros wsent to Ellis Keenan (Sunningdale) with scores of 79 and 81 for 160.
Davis won her latest Under-16 girls title by seven strokes with rounds of 70 and 72 for 142, excellent scoring by a teenager who will be knocking on the door of not only an under-18 England cirls cap this year but also full international honours if her Spanish form is a foretaste of things to come back home in 2009.
“I’ve worked hard with my coach, Scott Godfrey, during the winter and it is paying off already.I hit the fairways and most of the greens in regulation and once I got the hang of the very fast Bermuda grass putting surfaces, I began to hole a few putts,” said Hayley.
Runner-up was Welsh international Amy Boulden from Llandudno Maesdu with scores of 75 and 74 for 152, three shots ahead of Hannah Turland (Tidworth) who partnered Hayley Davis to victory in Sunday’s Costa Calida Foursomes over the same course.
Thirteen-year-old Amber Ratcliffe (Royal Cromer), who has slashed 10 shots off her handicap since she played at the inaugural Festival last February, won the top Under-16 handicap award of 100 vouchers with a net total of 142 off seven.
The seniors’ title and trophy went to Royal Guernsey player Di Hudson with scores of 90 and 87 for 177.
PS There will be another Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Festival next February, hopefully more in sync with the mid-term school holidays in Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales! Watch this space

2nd Hacienda del Alamo Womens Winter Festival

HAYLEY DAVIS IS

REIGNING IN SPAIN

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
The Hayley Davis bandwagon rolled on again on the fifth day of the Hacienda del Alamo Women’s Winter Golf Festival at the five-star Murcia golf resort in Spain today.
The 16-year-old Ferndown player, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, who won the Murcia Under-16 girls’ open title last Friday and the Costa Calida Foursomes in tandem with another14-year-old, Hannah Turland (Tidworth) on Sunday, equalled the ladies’ course record of two-under-par 70 in the first round of the Festival’s final 36-hole event.
Because preferred lies were in operation to protect the dormant Bermuda grass, Hayley’s effort will not rank alongside the record-setting 70 by former Curtis Cup player Elaine Farquharson-Black, achieved in 2007 over the long and testing Dave Thomas-designed course.
But that does not detract from another splendid day’s golf by young Davis who in golfing terms is “playing out of her skin” under the Spanish sun on the Costa Calida.
Over a course of some 5,534 metres – more than 6,000yd – one-handicapper Hayley birdied the two long holes on the outward journey, the fourth and ninth, dropping only one shot, at the seventh, to turn in one-under 35.
Eight pars and a birdie at the par-4 16th saw her home also in one-under 35.
In the Murcia Under-16s’ open championship, she has opened up a five-stroke lead over Welsh international Amy Boulden (Llandudmo Maesdu) who had an unwanted hat-trick of bogey 5s from the first to the third before birdieing the long fourth in halves of 38 and 37.
Thirteen-year-old Royal Cromer prospect, Amber Ratcliffe, is lying joint third at halfway in the Under-16s’ championship with Hannah Turland (Tidworth) on the 79 mark.
Charlie Douglass, the Brocket Hall scratch player, winner of the Murcia Ladies Open over two rounds on Firday, again leads the women’s section with a tidy round of one-over-par 73.
Charlie birdied the fourth, fifth, ninth, and 16th in halves of 35 and 38 but she spoiled her card with a double bogey 7 at the long 14th and single shots dropped at the seventh, eighth and 11th.
Her nearest rivals are Charlotte Dalton (Ladbrook Park) on 75 and teenager Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) on 76.

Campbell Thomson, Cara Gruber, director of golf Billy Sim, Hannah Turland and Hayley Davis after the Hacienda del Alamo Festival Costa Calida Foursomes today

Hayley and Hannah win Costa Calida Foursomes

title at Hacienda del Alamo Festival

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Two England girl golf stars of the future, Hayley Davis from Ferndown and Hannah Turland of Tidworth, underlined their international promise with an excellent round of three-over-par 75 to win the Hacienda del Alamo Women´s Winter Festival Costa Calida Foursomes title on an unusually damp and cloudy day at the five-star resort in the Murcia region of Spain today.
Only 14 years old, and playing the alternate shot game together for the first time, they matched the outward par of 36 over the long and testing Dave Thomas-designed course with a birdie at the long fourth and a bogey at the sixth and the rest pars.
Davis, who plays off one, and two-handicapper Turland did get a second birdie at the par-4 12th but the cold began to get to them and they bogeyed four of the last six holes. But it was a splendid effort which saw them collect 200 Euros each in vouchers.
They finished three shots ahead of the pair who travelled the farthest to get to Spain - Cara Gruber from Royal Dornoch and her boyfriend Campbell Thomson from Strathpeffer Spa, both venues being north of Inverness. One-handicapper Cara and Campbell, who plays off 16, did not make many serious mistakes, which is the secret of foursomes golf. A scratch score of 78 gave them a net score - half their combined handicaps - of 69.5 which also earned them vouchers to the value of 200 Euros each.
The Clyburn sisters from Woodhall Spa, 18-year-old England girl international Holly and her 12-year-old sibling India, topped the scratch scores in the Female & Female category - Hayley Davis and Hannah Turland were debarred from winning two prizes - with an round of 81. They each won a presentation box from Glenmuir, one of the major sponsors of the Festival.
Top scratch score in the Male & Female category was an 85 produced by the Royal Cromer partnership of 13 year old Amber Ratcliffe and her 16 year old brother Ryan. Amber also won a Glenmuir presentation box while Ryan gained a voucher worth 100 Euros.

"Lucky" Laura is handed 72nd career

victory in Australian Women´s Open

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
England’s Laura Davies won her second Australian Open after a dramatic final day at Metropolitan Golf Club in Melbourne.
Davies, who last won the title in 2004 at Concorde Golf Club, finished with a five-under-par 68, which was the best round of the day. She closed on a four-round total of seven-under-par 285, one stroke ahead of Spain’s Tania Elosegui.
Davies, who started the final round three shots behind the leader, Lee Chang-Hee, had posted her score as Elosegui stood on the 18th tee with a one stroke lead on eight-under-par.
Elosegui, a third year professional yet to win on the Ladies European Tour, thought that she needed a birdie to win. With that in mind, she played her third shot from the bunker short of the green 20 feet shy of the flag and rammed her first putt four feet past the hole. The return putt slipped by and she effectively handed Davies her 72nd career title and an AUD$75,000 first prize.
Davies couldn’t believe her luck. “This has made the whole trip absolutely fantastic. I’ve enjoyed it but golf wise it was a struggle up until the last putt, which actually missed. Luckily I tapped the other one in. At the time I thought I’d blown it and Tania would win but I’m pretty happy now,” she admitted.
Davies was 11 shots back going into the weekend after opening rounds of 74 and 76 but she made a tremendous charge up the leader board with a six-under 67 on Saturday.
“When I walked off the course on Friday I was very disappointed and I thought I was out of it. On a normal course you would say that was too far back but on a course like this it wasn’t too far. I’m really pleased. That’s what makes this such a good win, is because it’s such a good course,” she said.
She began her final round attack with birdies at the first, sixth and eighth holes. An impressive birdie at the tough par-four 10th took her to within a stroke of the next but she bogeyed the next. A monster eagle putt from the front of the green at the par five 14th followed by a birdie at the 15th, gave her two stroke advantage with three holes to play. However after she bogeyed the 16th and Elosegui birdied the par-five 15th, they were tied on seven-under-par. Davies birdied the 17th but hit a poor tee shot at the 18th before leaving her second shot 20 yards short of the green. A chip and two putts left her at seven-under-par and due to a late charge by the two Korean players she could not relax until the very end.
Tania rues a missed putt on the 18th green
“I never imagined she’d three-putt it. If I had been in that situation I might not have been so bold but she’s young and that’s what young players do. Luckily for me and unluckily for her she missed the one coming back so that was a bit of a surprise,” added Davies, who is embraced by Australians as one of their own.
At the start of the week she was unanimously voted in as an honorary member of the ALPG Tour for her support of Australian women's golf. "If I ever had to live anywhere else than England, it would be Australia. I love everything about this country - except the spiders," she said. England’s Melissa Reid, who finished third at last year’s Australian Open at nearby Kingston Heath, continued her love affair with Australia’s sand belt courses by finishing tied for third with South Koreans Choi He Yong and Lee Chang-Hee on five-under-par. Defending champion Karrie Webb finished tied for sixth on two-under with fellow Australian Katherine Hull, who won the ANZ Ladies Masters the previous week. Australia’s Nikki Campbell, England’s Lisa Hall, Norway’s Marianne Skarpnord, South Korean Kim Hye Youn and Scotland’s Clare Queen tied for eighth place on one-under-par.
Clare had rounds of 70, 75, 72 and 74 to pick up 6230 Australian dollars.
Fellow Scot Lynn Kenny earned 2977 dollars for joint 19th place on 294 with scores of 72, 72, 75 and 75.
The Ladies European Tour resumes in April for the Comunitat Valencia European Nations Cup at La Sella Resort in Spain before the first full field tournament of the European leg of events, the Turkish Ladies Open at National Golf Club in Belek, Antalya, from 7-10 May.
