Five Scots survive the LET Pre-Qualifier at La Manga

Feggans, Walker, Thomson produce

their best under pressure

Dutch amateur Christel Boeljon led the pre-qualifiers bidding to make it onto the Ladies European Tour at La Manga Club in Spain.
Boeljon, who played on the US college tour as a student at Purdue University, Indiana, fired rounds of 69, 74, 65 and 68 for a four-round total of 276, 12-under-par over the North and S0uth courses. She finished two shots clear of Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist and Paraguayan Julieta Granada, with Spain’s Elisa Serramia, like Nordqvist a former British women's open amateur champion, in fourth place on five-under-par 283.
A total of 68 players (63 and ties) from a field of 104 progress to the final stage - four rounds over the South Course - which begins on Monday and ends on Thursday. The 68 qualifiers join 27 others who are already exempt.
At the final stage, the top 50 out of 95 players will be given a place on the Ladies European Tour, with the leading 30 given a higher category of membership offering the opportunity to play in most of the 2009 events.
Five Scots - Vikki Laing (291), Pamela Feggans (296) , Kylie Walker (298), Krystle Caithness (299) and Michele Thomson (304) - all made it through. Feggans and Walker (pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency), played particularly well on the final day of low temperatures and rain. Pamela had a 68, seven shots better than anything she had achieved in the first three rounds, and Kylie shot a 67, which was also her best by eight shots.
Curtis Cup player and Scottish amateur champion Michele Thomson was possibly under the most pressure of the five Scots qualifiers, being several shots on the "wrong" side of the projected cut-off mark with one round to go.
But she too responded with her best round of the four - a par-matching 71 over the North course.
"Ross Cameron, her caddie, said it was the best he had seen Michele play," said her dad Graham. "She had numerous birdie opportunities from 10ft and less and only holed one, at 17, so hopefully it will come good next week.
"Michele says it was the first round this week she felt like she had total control of the ball."
Auchterarder's Emily Ogilvy (77 for 314) and Karyn Burns (Mearns Castle Golf Academy) (79 for 325) were among the non-qualifiers

Holly Clyburn joint third with one

round to go in "Harder Hall"

England girl international golfer Holly Clyburn from Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire went into the final round of the Harder Hall Women's Invitational in joint third place after very good second and third-day efforts of 67 and 69 at the Harder Hall Golf & Country Club, Sebring, Florida.
Woodhall Spa GC member Holly, 17, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, was on the 214 mark - her opening round of 78 meant she had a lot of ground to make up - four shots behind the leader, Candace Schepperle from Birmingham, Alabama, Auburn University student and winner of the Dixie Women's Amateur tournament elsewhere in Florida the week before last.
Candace has scored 71, 69 and 70 for 210 and a two-shot lead from Amela Lewis of Jacksonville, Florida.
Several students from Scottish universities are competing in this 72-hole tournament which is the opener in the annual Orange Blossom women's amateur tour of Florida.
Scottish Under-21 girls champion Kelsey MacDonald (Stirling University) was lying joint 15th in the big field with a tally of 226.
Kelsey, who also won the Scottish schoolgirls title in 2008, has had ever-improving rounds of 78, 75 and 73.
Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen student Jane Turner from Penicuik has scored 78,78 and 77 for 233. Another RGU student, Laura Murray from Alford, Aberdeenshire was on 234 after scores of 77, 80 and 77.
Stirling student Rachel Cassidy from Dublin was a shot behind with scores of 81, 80 and 74.
England's Holly Calvert (Stirling University) has shot 78, 80 and 82 for 240.
Two other Stirling students, Scotland junior international Rebecca Wilson from Monifieth and Harriet Beasley from England were on 264 and 268 respectively.
Rebecca has had scores of 88, 85 and 91, Harriet 89, 90 and 89.

VIKKI LAING IS TOP SCOT AFTER THREE ROUNDS AT LA MANGA

Michele has it all to do in final
round of Pre-Qualifier

Curtis Cup player Michele Thomson from Ellon's dreams of playing on the Ladies European Tour this year as a professional hang by a thread after a dismal round of seven-over-par 80 for a 54-hole tally of 233 at the LET Qualifying School Stage 1 at La Manga, Spain.
Michele, the Scottish women's amateur champion, dropped seven shots on the outward half alone of the par-73 South Course and needed to come home in level par to salvage an 80.
But only the leading 62 players after Saturday's fourth round will qualify for next week's Final Q School over the same course and Thomson is three or four shots over the projected cut-off mark at the moment.
Vikki Laing, joint 10th after a solid 70 for 219, and Krystle Caithness, joint 31st with a 76 for 224 are reasonably assured of qualifying and they should be joined by Pamela Feggans (76 for 228) and Kylie Walker (75 for 231).
Michele is walking the qualifying tightrope while Emily Ogilvy (Auchterarder), with a 77 for 237, needs to hit every fairway and green and hole every putt in her final round.
Karyn Burns, coach at Mearns Castle Golf Academy, had a 79 for 246.
Dutch amateur and US college student Christel Boeljon, pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, showed what could be achieved on a lovely Spanish afternoon with a 65 for seven-under-par 208 and a two-shot lead from Julieta Granada (Paraguay) who had a third-round 67.
Anna Nordqvist (Sweden), the British women's open amateur champion who turned pro after doing well at the LPGA Tour School last month, is in third place after a 69 for 212.
The leading British player is Welsh professional Jo Pritchard with a 70 for 214 and fourth place.

We need lady pros for Hacienda del Alamo pro-am

Former Ladies European Tour

pro Ruth O'Carroll making

comeback at Festival

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Festival Organiser
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
La Manga-based former Ladies European Tour professional Ruth O'Carroll has sportingly agreed to make a competitive comeback at next month's Hacienda del Alamo Festival.
"I've not played on the LET for five years and I've got three children now but I'll give it a go in the Murcia Ladies Open (February 12 and 13), " said Ruth.
"I would need to find a babysitter to be able to play in the other Festival events!"
Ruth was an England international and Hertfordshire county team player before she turned professional.
Well done, Ruth for entering into the spirt of the Festival.
We are very, very short of lady professionals. We need at least 20 for the St Valentine's Day pro-am on the Saturday. So if you are a lady pro and you are reading this, please follow Ruth O'Carroll's example and "give it a go!"
Another former Ladies European Tour professional and Scotland amateur international Tracey Craik also now lives at La Manga - but she has not entered yet. Tracey is an old friend of mine .. and I'm working on it!
Just a reminder that we have reduced the entry fee for Under-16s to 25 Euros for all the events, not just the two 36-hole girls' stroke-play events. We want to encourage parents to enter their youngsters to gain competitive experience.
And a second reminder, no caddies are permitted in the Under-16 girls' events. For the remainder of the competitors buggies are allowed in all events - rented on the basis of two players to a buggy. Battery-driven and "normal" pull trolleys will be available for renting from the Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort.

Krystle moves up with a 70 at LET Q School Stage 1

Caithness shows her class in

second round at La Manga

Krystle Caithness moved up to joint 13th place in the field of 104 players with a great round of three-under-par 70 over the more difficult South Course on the second day of the Ladies European Tour Qualifying School Stage 1 competition at La Manga in south-east Spain today.
The Fifer, pictured right with Curtis Cup "war paint" on her cheeks, will be 20 on January 21. She looked a different player from the one who started with a seven-over-par 78 over the shorter North Course on Wednesday.
Caithness, who quit her Georgia University golf scholarship in early December, was four under-par at one stage after birdies at the two short holes (the second and 12th) and two long holes (the ninth and 13th).
She dropped her one and only shot to par at the 15th but with a 36-hole tally of 148 she is looking good to be high up among the leading 62 players who will advance after Saturday's fourth round to next week's Final Q School at the same venue.
Musselburgh exile Vikki Laing, disqualified at last month's LPGA Tour School for signing for a wrong figure, really needs to earn some sort of Tour status on this side of the Atlantic. It really was a game of two halves for the US-based Scot today.
Vikki had a second-round 74 over the South Course after reaching the turn in five-under-par 32 but taking 42 shots to come home, including a quadruple bogey 8 at the 11th.
Pamela Feggans from Patna, Ayrshire, like Laing, has played all her pro golf in the United States. She had a 77 today for 152.
Scottish amateur champion Michele Thomson from Ellon is finding birdies hard to come by but a three-over-par 74 at the North Course gave her a two-round tally of nine-over-par 153. Ten over par is the forecast cut-off figure after Saturday's fourth round.
Michele birdied the first and then bogeyed the second, 11th, 12th and 17th.
All the other Scots are on the wrong side of the forecast cut-off figure of 10 over par. Kylie Walker from Buchanan Castle is on 12-over-156 after a pair of 78s; Emily Ogilvy (Auchterarder) is on 15-over 159 after an 82 in the second round; Karyn Burns (Mearns Castle Golf Academy), obviously short of tournament play after years of coaching, is on 23-over 167. She had an 83 today.
Ladybank's Jocelyn Carthew retired after an opening round of 90.
Four players are setting the pace on one-under-par 143 - British women's open amateur champion Anna Nordqvist from Sweden, now a professional, and Julie Granada (Paraguay), Maria Ringdahl (Swedeny) and Dutch amateur Christel Boeljon.

Start of Orange Blossom Women's Amateur Tour in Florida

Laura leads the Brits on opening

day of Harder Hall Invitational

Scotland international Laura Murray (Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen) from Alford was the best placed of the Scottish-based students at the end of the first round of the 54th Harder Hall Women's Invitational 72-hole tournament at Sebring, Florida.
This is the first event of the prestigious Orange Blossom Tour women's amateur circuit.
Laura, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, going into the second round shared 19th place after returning a five-over-par score of 77 over the 6,151yd course.
According to the tournament Press Release, "the competition began with great Florida weather."
Five players posted sub-par rounds, led by Nanette Hill from Pelham Manor, New York State with a 70 (35-35).
One stroke behind were four players - Wendi Golden and Jessica Korda, both entered from Bradenton, Florida, Amelia Lewis from Jacksonville, Florida and Candace Schepperle (Birmingham, Florida), winner of the Dixie Women's Amateur Championship last week.
Stirling University students Kelsey MacDonald, the Scottish Under-21 girls champion from Nairn Dunbar) and Holly Calvert were joint 23rd on the 78 mark alongwith Robert Gordon University student Jane Turner (Craigielaw) and England girl international Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) who finished fourth in the recent World Junior Challenge in Florida.
Ireland's Rachael Cassidy, a student at Stirling, is in joint 40th position with an 81 while Stirling colleagues Rebecca Wilson from Monifieth and Harriet Beasley scored 88 and 89 respectively.
United States Curtis Cup team captain Carol Thompson, a previous winner of the "Harder Hall" title and chairman of the organising committee, had a 78, which was a pretty good effort when you consider all her other responsibilities on the day.
Last year's winner, Galway-born Alison Walshe went on to play for the United States in the Curtis Cup match over the Old Course, St Andrews in May. She later turn professional.

Vikki Laing, Pamela Feggans
top Scots at cold and windy
La Manga pre-Q opener

Thanks to the good offices of Perth & Kinross county captain Dawn Butchart and county champion Laura Walker, we have been able to piece together an accurate - we hope - picture of the first round scores in the Ladies European Tour Pre-qualifying 72-hole event over the North and South Courses at La Manga, Spain today.
Because there is some confusion about the par for both courses (we believe it is 73 for the South and 71 for the North, although the LET website has it the other way round), we have lumped all the scores together.
We do know for a fact that it was a very cold and very windy day at the south-east Spain venue.
We also know that Curtis Cup player and Scottish champion Michele Thomson missed only two greens in regulation but finished up six over par at the tougher South course. But she did finish with a birdie 4 at the long closing hole so hopefully that will put her in a good frame of mind for the rest of the week.
The top Scots, both with 75s, were Vikki Laing, pictured above, and Pamela Feggans who have played exclusively in the United States for the past few years.
There are 104 players competing - there is no cut and the fourth and final round is on Saturday - with the leading 62 players going forward to next week's Final Q School where they will join 28 exempt players, including Scots Lynn Kenny and Jenna Wilson.
TODAY'S SCOREBOARD

71 Julieta Granada (Paraguay).

Selected scores:

79 Michele Thomson (McDonald Ellon), Krystle Caithness (St Regulus).

SPAIN HERE WE COME ...

HAYLEY DAVIS and (above right) HANNAH TURLAND

Bright young stars Hayley and

Hannah enter HdA Festival

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Festival Organiser
Two of the brightest young prospects on the English girls' golf scene, Hayley Davis (Ferndown) and Hannah Turland (Tidworth), are the latest to submit entries for the Hacienda del Alamo Women's Winter Festival at the five-star resort in the Murcia region of south-east Spain next month.
Hayley, who is 15 and has an exact handicap of 1.2, finished fourth in last year year's English Under-15 girls' championship at Ramside and was beaten finalist (at the 19th) in the Dorset women's county championship.
Hannah Turland, a 14-year-old who plays off two, was the English Under-13 girls' champion in 2007. She finished seventh in the English Under-15 girls' championship last year when she was also a competitor in the prestigious R&A Junior Open at Hesketh.
They have both entered the two Under-16 girls' 36-hole stroke-play events at the Hacienda del Alamo Festival and will team up for the Costa Calida Pairs on the Sunday.
By the way, Lyndsey Hewison, English Women's Golf Association Press Officer, tells me that another youngster who is bound for the Festival, 13-year-old Amber Ratcliffe, shot two-under par gross in the January stableford at Royal Cromer (in freezing temperatures and strong winds).
"It's her first sub-par score in competition and although it was a non-qualifier she's hoping to get cut," reports Lyndsey. "Meanwhile, Amber scored 45 pts off seven of a handicap!! She tells me she's really looking forward to the Festival and she's very impressed that Holly Clyburn will be there."
CHEAPER FOR UNDER-16s IN ALL FESTIVAL EVENTS
Because everybody is beginning to feel the economic pinch, we have decided that the entry fee for Under-16 year olds in ALL the Festival events, not just their own stroke-play tournaments, will be pegged at 25 Euros for each competition.

HACIENDA DEL ALAMO GOLF RESORT
VILLA RENTAL ACCOMMODATION

John Green of Hacienda Golf Properties is the Festival's "preferred partner" for the rental of villas/accommodation at the five-star resort.
That means if you are going to the Hacienda del Alamo February Festival, you should do one of two things, or maybe both.
1 E-mail John Green at info@hdagolfproperaties.com to find out what he can offer you and at what price.
2 Log on to John Green's website - http://www.hdagolfproperties.com/ - and see for yourself what he has to offer.
3 If you are prepared to share accommodation with other competitors, you should inform John Green of this. The more who share a villa, the cheaper it becomes per head.

Anna Scott from NE England makes top 20 in Florida

Auburn University student Candace Schepperle, with the Dixie Women's Amateur Championship trophy.

Alexis Thompson (13)

second again - this time

in Dixie Amateur

It's been a tough two tournament weeks over the Festive period for 13-year-old Alexis Thompson.
Beaten in a play-off for the Junior Orange Bowl girls' championship at Coral Gables, Florida - her home state - Alexis, pictured right, the US girls' champion, then finished second in the Dixie Women's Amateur championship at Heron Bay Golf Club, Coral Springs, also in Florida.

Schepperle totalled 14-under-par 275 and Thompson 276 after a final round of 66 which included a birdie at the last.
Carlie Yadloczky, who enrols at Auburn in the autumn, also shot a closing 66 to finish third at 11-under-par 277.
