Ladies Golf Union endorses Hacienda

del Alamo Golf Resort February Festival

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Tournament Controller
The 2nd Hacienda del Alamo February Festival is being endorsed by the Ladies Golf Union.
The entry form for the four events over six days programme - Thursday, February 12 to Tuesday, February 17 - are being highlighted on the LGU website.
Fraser Munro, the LGU's Championship Manager, who visited the resort earlier this year and was highly impressed with the resort's facilities, says: "I was really impressed by the course and the quality of the practice facilities. For me there would be no better way to prepare for the new season than by spending a week or two at Hacienda de Alamo."
One important change for the 2009 Festival is that we have opened up the Saturday-Sunday events to allow MALES to enter the St Valentine's Day pro-am and the Costa Calida Pairs.
This is to encourage competitors to be accompanied by their husbands, partners or boyfriends, who will be able to share in the weekend action.
The two main events - the 36-hole Murcia Ladies Open (Thursday-Friday) and the 36-hole Hacienda Ladies Open (Monday-Tuesday) remain ladies/girls only.
Every competitor, whether they are playing in all four events or just one, is entitled to a free practice round over the Dave Thomas-designed championship course, which this week is hosting the Scottish Senior Golfing Society's Spanish Festival (switch over to http://www.scottishgolfview.com/ to see daily reports).
There is NO minimum or maximum age limit. All we ask is that the players have a handicap of 20 or less when they are competing in the Festival.
All four events that make up the Festival are open to lady professionals who pay a higher entry fee (70 Euros) than amateurs (55 Euros). The pros have their own prize lists. One or two have asked what the level of prize money will be. The answer to that is that so much depends on the number of professional entries. If we get, say, 30 for each event then the first pro prize would be around 1,000 Euros, scaling down to fourth or fifth place.
The more pro entries we get, then the bigger the pro prize funds. We are always open to offers of competition sponsorship!
Any queries or you want an entry form E-mailed direct to you? E-mail Tournament Controller Colin Farquharson at Colin@scottishgolfview.com

Hannah Jun pips Pernilla Lindberg for
first place in Futures Tour Q School

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE US DURAMED FUTURES TOUR
LPGA Tour member Hannah Jun of San Diego, finished with a round of even-par 72 to win the Duramed Futures Tour's four-day qualifier at Cleveland Heights Golf Course, Lakeland in Florida. She finished with a four-day score of 12-under-par 276.
Jun edged out amateur Pernilla Lindberg of Bollnas, Sweden, who finished one stroke back at 11-under-par 277. Amateur Victoria Kiser (69) of Orlando battled back from a five-shot deficit heading into today's final round to claim third place at 10-under-par 278, just two shots off the lead.
Amateur Kira Meixner (70) of Richmond, British Columbia, tied with Molly Birmingham (72) of Cornelius, N.C. for fifth at 5-under-par 283.
The 94 players who made the 54-hole cut will receive exempt or non-exempt status for the 2009 Duramed Futures Tour season.
Editor's note: They included Glasgow's Gemma Webster, Northern Ireland's Brenda McLarnon and England's Anna Scott. Webster and Scott are still amateur golfers, attending Ohio State and Georgia universities respectively.
The number of exempt players will be determined following the final stage of LPGA Qualifying School in early December.
Jun called it a "so-so" day with two birdies and two bogeys in her final round, but it was enough to claim her first tournament win since the Canadian PGA Women's Championship in Mississauga, Ontario, in August. Jun and Lindberg headed into today's round tied for the lead at 12-under-par 204 through 54 holes."I made a lot of pars today, but I just didn't hit the ball close enough for birdies," Jun said. "I didn't really know how I was standing during the day, so it was easy to not think about it and just play my game."
Jun is now armed with momentum heading into the final stage of LPGA Qualifying School in December. She tied for 25th last year at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament to earn non-exempt status for the 2008 season.
"I learned I was a lot more patient as a player than I thought because I didn't get off to a great start," Jun said. "I felt like things could have gone really bad, but they didn't."
Lindberg finished out of sub-par red numbers for the first time this week, missing a 5-foot birdie putt on her final hole that would have tied her with Jun at the end of 72 holes. The Duramed FUTURES Tour does not play off a tie for medalist honors in the annual Q-School.
"I missed a lot of putts, but I was hitting it close all day," said Lindberg, a senior at Oklahoma State University. "I knew I could have had a lower score today, but I had a great experience all week. It's going to be a while before I play another tournament, but I feel really good about the way I played."
Kiser gave a glimpse at how bright her future is, recording her fourth consecutive sub-par round. The 16-year-old Kiser politely declined to speculate on her future, but the four-time AJGA winner and 2008 Future Collegians World Tour Player of the Year proved she could spend time and stay at the top of the leaderboard in this week's qualifier.
"Some of my best rounds begin with a bogey," Kiser said. "I had to get over some early adrenaline, but I really enjoyed the week.
The low round of the day at The Heights went to 2008 Tour member Perry Swenson (67) of Charlotte, N.C. The former collegian at the University of Texas had fellow Tour member Meghan Little of Sturgis, S.D., on the bag as her caddie for the final round. Swenson's round moved her up the leaderboard into a tie for 29th after she made the 54-hole cut by one stroke.
"We were able to get some good reads on the green and agreed with most of the slopes," said Swenson, whose lone bogey was a three-putt green on No. 17. "That led to a more confident putting stroke and one of my better putting days."
Meixner quietly maintained her status in the top 10 during the week, ending today's round with a 2-under-par 70 to climb into a fifth-place tie. A member of the Canadian National Team, Meixner graduated from Kent State University in May, where she was a four-year starter. The Tour's qualifier had been in Meixner's plans for some time, but the Canadian wanted to finish college before attempting to earn status.
"I think it showed that my iron play was really good this week," Meixner said. "I have high expectations, but I tried not to put pressure on myself. I thought I stayed calm and level all week and I'm very happy with how I finished today."
The Duramed FUTURES Tour's 2009 season begins March 20-22, in Winter Haven, Fla., at the inaugural Florida's Natural Growers Charity Classic.
Weather: Sunny with a high temperature around 82 degrees with light and variable winds from the northwest.

Gemma Webster, Brenda McLarnon and Anna
Scott survive third-round Futures School cut

US college amateur Pernilla Lindberg (69) of Bollnas, Sweden, and LPGA Tour member Hannah Jun (68) of San Diego, Calif., lead all players heading into the final round of the Duramed FUTURES Tour 2009 Qualifying Tournament at 12-under-par 204.
Sixteen-year-old amateur Victoria Kiser (70) of Orlando, Fla., is five strokes back in solo third at 7-under-par 209.
First-round leader Maria Hernandez (70) of Pamplona, Spain, Jieun Oh (73) of Jejudo, South Korea, and Molly Birmingham (70) of Cornelius, N.C., are tied for fourth at 5-under-par 211.
A total of 94 players made the 54-hole cut at 8-over-par 224, with the remaining field to play tomorrow's final round at Cleveland Heights Golf Course.

They included Glasgow's Gemma Webster, a student at Ohio State, who got back on track with a good third round ... Brenda McLarnon, the Belfast tour pro who has been a regular on the Futures Tour circuit since she graduated from a US college ... and Anna Scott from Consett, Co Durham, a student at Georgia University.
Huntington Hills Golf and Country Club surrendered the low round of the day to amateur Natalie Sheary (67) of West Hartford, Conn. Sheary, a sophomore at Wake Forest University, was runner-up at the 2008 CIGNA Golf Classic in Bloomfield, Conn.
LPGA Tour member Taylor Leon (68) of Dallas carded the low round at Cleveland Heights and three players posted a 3-under-par 69 at Imperial Lakes Country Club.
Extra excitement surrounded Huntington Hills as the course also gave up the qualifier's fourth hole-in-one, this time to 2008 Tour member Benedikte "Boo" Grotvedt of Nesbru, Norway. Grotvedt used a 6-iron from 166 yards on the par-3, 11th hole. It was her third career ace in tournament play and second since the Tour's stop in Hammond, Ind., where she aced the par-3, 17th hole at Lost Marsh Golf Course.
"I saw the ball start rolling toward the hole and saw it go in and disappear," Grotvedt said. "I was going to use a 7-iron, but my caddie wanted to use 6-iron to make sure it went to the back of the green. Caddie gets the credit for this one."
Stephanie Godare of Conroy, Texas, amateur Jessica Hauser of Hartland, Wis., and Mizuyo Tanaka of Tokyo, Japan, carded respective aces this week.
Kiser fired another sub-par round, this time at Cleveland Heights. She made a 35-foot birdie putt off the edge of the green, making the turn on No. 1 and adding birdies on No. 3 and 13.
"I hit the ball really well and didn't make too many mistakes," said the 16-year-old Kiser. "I feel really good about my overall game and I can tell my short game has gotten a lot better this week."
Kiser says she feels fortunate to enjoy the comfort of her own bed this week, traveling 45 minutes away from home in Orlando. The Florida teen was a four-time winner on the American Junior Golf Association this season and was named the Future Collegians World Tour Player of the Year. The homeschooled Kiser is 16th in Golfweek's junior rankings.
"I've felt like my game has held up out here this week and right now everything is pretty solid," Kiser said.
Lindberg was consistent for another round, this time finding red numbers at Imperial Lakes Country Club. After recording a career-low 6-under-par 66 at Huntington Hills on Wednesday, Lindberg hopes her return to Cleveland Heights will be as effective as when she drained six birdies in Tuesday's first round at The Heights.
"Today, it felt different from the past two days because I was hitting the ball just OK," said Lindberg, a senior at Oklahoma State University. "I had to save a lot of pars, but thanks to some good putting, it turned out to be a pretty good round. It's great to be shooting low scores, but I still have to stay away from the bogeys."
Amateur Jane Chin (76) of Mission Viejo, Calif., ripped through Huntington Hills in Wednesday's second round with a 6-under-par 66, equaling her career-best round. Chin has won three out of four events this season with UC-Irvine and is currently the top-ranked collegian in the Golfstat Cup rankings and second-ranked player in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.
Jun pulled even for the lead at Huntington Hills, carding five birdies and one bogey.
"All three courses have a lot of opportunities for birdies," Jun said. "I feel good about where I am and had a lot of good chances on the tee to the green. I was hitting them close all day, I don't think I missed a green."
Chin was prodded by former UC-Irvine teammate SeLanee Henderson of Apple River, Calif., to enter this week's qualifier. A fifth-year senior, Chin redshirted last year to step away from golf and correct some problems with her driver. Henderson qualified for the final stage of LPGA Q-School at sectionals in Venice, Fla.
A fatigued Chin finished Thursday's round at 4-over-par 76, to drop back into a five-way tie for 11th.
"I had a few mental mistakes today, but I'm hitting the ball really well," Chin said. "I haven't lost any confidence, but I three-putted four times coming in today."
Final-round play begins Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. off the first and 10th tees at Cleveland Heights. The leading foursome of Lindberg, Jun, Kiser and Birmingham will tee off at 9:20 a.m.

Emma Taylor loses four-shot

lead to finish 4th in Florida

Emma Taylor from Devon, a student at Bethune Cookman College, Daytona Beach, Florida, finished joint fourth in a field of 45 players at the Holiday Inn Express/Hatter women's college tournament at Victoria Hills Golf Club, DeLand, Florida.
Over a par-72 course of 6,056yd, Emma, pictured right, jumped four shots ahead with an excellent opening score of 71 but she did not reach that high standard again over the final two rounds, finishing with 80 and 77 for a total of 228 - eight strokes behind the winner, Danielle Jackson (Stetson University) with 76, 73 and 71 for four-over 220.
Emma's BCC team-mate, Hannah Bews from Dorset, came joint 34th with scores of 86, 81 and 80 for a total of 247.
Host university Stetson - not surprisingly known as "The Hatters" - won the team title by a big margin from Daytona State with Bethune Cookman joint fourth in a field of eight teams.

Match-play title No 5 for Duke

Duke University women’s golf team claimed its fifth National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Collegiate Match Play Championship this week with a 4-1 victory over third-seeded Alabama at the Independence Course, Ginn Reunion Resort in Kissimmee, Floridaa.
Duke has now made five appearances in the NGCA Match Play and won five titles -- 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008. The only year the Blue Devils did not win the championship was in 2005 when Duke did not participate.

Hacienda del Alamo February Festival

European Tour director David will
play with wife Mary in Costa
Calida Pairs on the Sunday

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
The European Tour will be represented at the 2nd Hacienda del Alamo Women's February Festival for the second year in row - in an unofficial capacity in the person of David MacLaren.
David is the European Tour's Director of Property & Venue Development.
Last year David held a watching and relaxing brief as his wife Mary, daughter Meghan and family friend Rebecca Gee - all members of Wellingborough Golf Club, Northamptonshire - played in Festival events.
This time round, because we have widened the scope of the entries to allow males to enter the weekend events - the St Valentine's Day pro-am (Saturday, February 14) and the Costa Calida Pairs (Sunday, February 15) - David can and will team up with Mary in the pairs' competition.
Mary, Meghan and Rebecca all play off four of a handicap and are county team golf standard.
All three will make up one of the teams in the pro-am while Meghan and Rebecca will play together in the Costa Calida Pairs.
And Mary, Meghan and Rebecca will play as individuals in the 36-hole Hacienda del Alamo Ladies Open on Monday and Tuesday, February 16 and 17.
The majority of the entries for the inaugural Hacienda del Alamo Festival last February came from the Emerald Isle and a repeat could be on the cards. Orla Barry and Jane Whiriskey, both from Galway Golf Club, are both making a return trip and bringing a friend with them.
No entries from any professionals yet although Lien Willems from Belgium, who played in the inaugural Festival, says she is definitely coming again and bringing two amateur golfing friends with her this time.
Curtis Cup player and Scottish women's champion Michele Thomson (McDonald Ellon) and Jocelyn Carthew (Ladybank), the player she beat in the championship final at Lossiemouth last May, say they would love to play at the February Festival but cannot finalise their plans until they see how they fare at the Ladies European Tour Qualifying School at La Manga Golf Resort, which is less than half-an-hour away from Hacienda del Alamo Golf Resort.
Two international golfers among the early entries - the legendary Mary McKenna from Ireland and England girl cap Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) from Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire. Mary is now in the senior class as a competitor and we will have senior category prizes.
Competitors chasing places in the 2009 GB&I Vagliano Trophy team can rest assured that all the Festival scores will be brought to the attention of the Ladies Golf Union's international selection committee.

Top-20 finish for
Paul Ferrier on
US college
circuit debut

Last year's Scottish boys' match-play champion Paul Ferrier, a member of Baberton Golf Club, Edinburgh, finished a creditable joint 18th in a field of 76 players on his debut on the American college golf circuit on Wednesday.
Ferrier, 19, a freshman student at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, had rounds of 72, 74 and 76 for a total of six-over-par 222 in the CordeValley Collegiate tournament at CordeValle Country Club, San Martin, California over a long course of 7,119yd with a par of 72.
A double-bogey 7 - his only double of the 54 holes - at the 18th in his final round after birdies at the 11th and 16th cost him a higher finish but it was still a performance that pleased his college coach who had felt the Scot was ready to play for the team after a few months' settling-in process and before the winter break.
Only one other member of the Charlotte squad of six finished higher than Ferrier - David Rawluk from Dublin who scored 74, 68 and 78 to tie for 15th place on 220 after being third with one round to go. Rawluk had double-bogeys at two short holes in his final round.
Tim Sluiter (Southern California) and Nick Taylor (Washington) headed the field jointly on the four-under-par 212 mark.
Charlotte (1114) finished fifth of 12 behind runaway winners Southern California (1080) in the team event.

Oklahoma State's Lindberg leader of the
pack in Futures Tour Q School
Amateur Pernilla Lindberg of Bollnas, Sweden, posted a career-low 6-under-par 66 at Huntington Hills Golf and Country Club to lead all players through second-round play at 135 (-9).
Lindberg overcame a four-stroke deficit to first-round leader Maria Hernandez (76) of Pamplona, Spain. LPGA Tour member Hannah Jun (67) of San Diego, Calif., climbed to one shot behind Lindberg with a two-day total of 136 (-8).
Jieun Oh (68) of Jejudo, South Korea, is in solo third at 6-under-par 138. Fourth-ranked collegian Jane Chin (66) of Mission Viejo, Calif., and high school amateur Victoria Kiser (69) of Orlando, Fla., are four strokes back with a two-round score of 139 (-5).
The 312-player field is competing at Cleveland Heights Golf Course, Huntington Hills and Imperial Lakes Country Club - all in the Greater Lakeland area. The first, second and third rounds will be played on all three courses with each contestant playing each course once before the final round of play is staged at Cleveland Heights.
The change of scenery was not as kind to Hernandez as she carded a 4-over-par 76 at Imperial Lakes to drop back into a four-way tie for seventh at 3-under-par 141. Eighteen-year-old Min Seo Kwak (77) of Seoul, South Korea, dropped to even-par 144 through two rounds at Cleveland Heights after recording a 5-under-par 67 in Tuesday's round.
Lindberg was 1-under par through eight holes before holing a 30-foot birdie putt on her ninth hole. The Swede saved par on holes 10 through 12 before closing out her round with three consecutive birdies -- all within four feet. She carded six birdies and 12 pars on the day.
"Right now, my game feels very steady from tee to green," said Lindberg, a member of the winning Swedish Women's World Amateur Team. "I thought I was pretty solid with the irons and I was able to adjust to the speed of the greens."
Going "back to school" has meant more to Lindberg than making her mark in the ranks of professional golf. Her time in Lakeland has included several nights at Panera catching up on schoolwork before she heads back to Stillwater, Okla., where she will finish her senior season with the fourth-ranked Cowgirls.
Lindberg has also sought the advice of fellow Swede and Duramed FUTURES Tour member Sofie Andersson of Angelholm, Sweden. Andersson, a 2008 LPGA rookie, helped set up Lindberg with housing and has been giving her tips on organization and life as a professional.
Jun recorded a bogey-free round with five birdies. She followed her alma mater, UCLA, during the stroke-play portion of the Hooter's Match Play Championship in Orlando before heading to Lakeland. A former two-time All-American with the Bruins, Jun is trying to stay warmed up for the final stage of the LPGA Qualifying Tournament in December.
"We really don't have many events to play in so this is good practice for (LPGA) Q-School," Jun said. "I hit some good shots today and made some putts."
Making noise as the youngest competitor in the 312-player field was the 16-year-old amateur Kiser. She mixed four birdies and a bogey in Wednesday's round at Imperial Lakes to move into a tie for fourth with Chin, a senior at UC-Irvine.
"I feel very comfortable out there because it's really just me and the course," Kiser said. "It's a great opportunity to see where my game stacks up and I feel like I've been playing very consistently."
A rising star in the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) ranks, Kiser won four of six AJGA events she entered to earn honorable mention All-American status. She was named Player of the Year and a first-team All-American with the Future Collegians World Tour (FCWT) before moving on to the AJGA.
Not expected to graduate from high school until 2010, Kiser hasn't set a timetable on when she will turn pro. If she decides to take the college route, Kiser is sure to be a highly-coveted recruit when the time comes.
"My ultimate goal is to turn professional, but either way it will be great," said Kiser, who collected three FCWT victories this year. "I'm happy where my game is right now."
Amateur Jessica Hauser of Hartland, Wis., and Mizuyo Tanaka of Tokyo, Japan, carded hole-in-ones in second-round play, following up 2008 Tour member Stephanie Godare of Conroy, Texas, and her first-round ace at Huntington Hills on the 177-yard, 14th hole.
Hauser, a senior at Ohio State University, used a 6-iron on the par-3, 15th hole at Imperial Lakes from 167 yards for her third career hole-in-one and first in competition. She is one of five Buckeyes competing in this week's qualifier, joining Gemma Webster of Glasgow, Scotland, Emma Jandel of Dayton, Ohio, Nara Shin of Avon, Conn., and In Hong Lim of Melbourne, Australia.
Tanaka drained her third career ace on the 166-yard 11th hole at Huntington Hills.
"Sometimes I get pessimistic about these shots, but it disappeared so fast I thought it skipped over the green," Hauser said. "I hit it great and was staring it down. Sure enough when I walked up, it was in."
Third-round play begins Thursday morning at 8 a.m. off the first and 10th tees at each course. The field will be cut to the low 90 scores and ties after 54 holes.

Freshman Ferrier is playing well on
US college circuit debut in California

Baberton Golf Club member Paul Ferrier, a freshman student at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, is doing well in his debut tournament on the American college circuit.
With one round to play in the CordeValle Collegiate at CordeValle, San Martin in California, 19-year-old Edinburgh player, the 2007 Scottish boys' match-play champion, is lying joint 12th in a field of 76 players.
Ferrier matched the par of 72 over a course much longer than he would be accustomed to at home - 7,119 yards - in his first round and he had a 74 in yesterday's (TUESDAY) second round for four-over-par tally of 146. He has had five birdies so far and has kept a double bogey off his card so far.
Tim Sluiter (Southern California University) leads with a pair of 70s for 140.
Paul Ferrier is the second-best UNC-Charlotte player from a squad of six in the tournament. Team-mate David Rawluk, a senior-year student from Dublin, is sharing third place on 142 after scores of 74 and 68, the best second-round return by anyone.

US college student Maria Hernandez

from Purdue leads field at Futures

Tour Q School first round
Spanish amateur Maria Hernandez from Pamplona, a junior (third year) student at Purdue University, fired a bogey-free, seven -under-par round of 65 at Huntington Hills Golf and Country Club to lead all players in the first round at the Duramed Futures Tour 2009 Qualifying Tournament.
Trailing two strokes back is Min Seo Kwak of Seoul, South Korea, who posted the lowest round at Imperial Lakes Country Club, coming in with a first-round tally of 5-under-par 67.
Three shots behind is Futures Tour rookie Elin Andersson of Eskilstuna, Sweden, who carded a four-under-par 68 at Huntington Hills.
Amateur Pernilla Lindberg of Bollnas, Sweden, and Susan Nam of Edmonton, Alberta, led the way at Cleveland Heights Golf Course, joining four other players at 3-under-par 69.
The 312-player field is competing at Cleveland Heights, Huntington Hills and Imperial Lakes - all in Florida's Greater Lakeland area. The first, second and third rounds will be played on all three courses with each contestant playing every course once before the final round of play is staged at Cleveland Heights. The field will be cut to the low 90 scores and ties after 54 holes.
Hernandez led 25 players who posted under-par scores on all three courses, torching Huntington Hills for seven birdies. It was a career-best round for the Spaniard.
"I played pretty good today and my putting went really well," said Hernandez, pictured above, a two time NGCA first-team All-American selection. "I need to focus on a different course tomorrow and forget about today."
Despite three birdies on her front nine and four more on her back nine, Hernandez called a three-foot putt for par on her first hole the most critical shot of the day. She needed just 27 putts to finish her round.
"I haven't played well at all this season," said Hernandez, the 29th ranked collegian in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. "It's been a really slow start and I need to start building confidence back again for the spring."
Hernandez headed a strong collegiate contingent that includes Lindberg (Oklahoma State), 2008 Curtis Cup member Jennie Lee (Duke) of Henderson, Nev., Taylore Karle (Pepperdine) of Scottsdale, Ariz., Jane Chin (UC-Irvine) of Mission Viejo, Calif., Jessica Yadloczky (Florida) of Casselberry, Fla., and Natalie Sheary (Wake Forest) of West Hartford, Conn., among many others.
It has been a relatively short journey for the 18-year-old Kwak, who has spent just two months in the United States after coming over from South Korea. She has enrolled at the Mike Bender Golf Academy in Lake Mary, Florida, and her entries at LPGA sectional qualifying stages in Rancho Mirage, Calif., and Venice, Fla., marked her first tournaments in the U.S.
In Tuesday's first round at Imperial Lakes, Kwak managed six birdies, including a chip-in for birdie on the par-3 seventh hole.
"I was very comfortable and stayed focused on hitting fairways and avoiding the rough," said the soft-spoken Kwak, a five-year member of the Korea Junior Golf Association (KJGA).
Even though her time in Florida has been short, Kwak is well aware of the recent success by fellow South Korean LPGA card-winners M.J. Hur, Jin Young Pak and Song Yi Choi on the Futures Tour. Kwak is hoping to be part of the next wave of talent coming from South Korea.
"It's exciting to follow them," Kwak said. "I just need to continue to practice hard and stay strong with my irons."
Andersson made her professional debut earlier this year at the Tour's stop in Hammond, Indiana, fresh off her collegiate career at South Alabama University. One of six Swedes in this week's qualifying tournament field, Andersson's first career bogey-free round on Tuesday was overdue after enduring some mental struggles in her rookie season.
"I played some OK shots and hit a lot of greens," said Andersson, who competed in nine Futures Tour events this year. "I tried to stay steady because I've been doubting myself a lot lately."
Second-round play begins Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. off the first and 10th tees at each course.

Another top-five finish by
Laura Cutler in America
but Portia slips back

Laura Cutler from Essex, a freshman student at Jacksonville State University, followed up her second-place finish last week by coming joint fifth in the UAB Fall Beach Bash women's college tournament at The Peninsula Golf & Racquets Club, Gulf Shores, Alabama.
Laura, pictured above from the JSU website, had scores of 74 and 75 for 149 over a 5945yd course with a par of 72. She finished seven shots behind the three-shot winner, Stevy Loy (Columbia University) with 75 and 67 for two-under 142.
But Laura's compatriot and JSU team-mate, Portia Abbott, who tied for third place last week, was down the field in this one with scores of 81 and 79 for 160 and 40th place in a field of 69.
Portia had four double bogeys over the 36 holes.
Jacksonville State, who won the team event at the Troy Invitational last week, finished third of 14 this time behind Columbia and Samford.

Paul Ferrier matches par of 72 on
his debut for UNC-Charlotte
and first trip to California

Paul Ferrier, the 2007 Scottish boys' match-play champion and member at Baberton Golf Club, Edinburgh, finally got to make his debut for the University of North Carolina-Charlotte team this week - and hasn't the boy done well!
Paul, pictured right, matched the par of 72 over a course much longer than he ever played in Scotland - 7,119 yards with a par of 72.
The bonus for young Ferrier is that he has been on his first trip to California to compete in the CordeValle Collegiate at CordeValle, San Martin.
Paul was lying a creditable joint 10th in a field of 76 after his 72 which left him three shots behind the joint pacemakers, Sihwan Kim (Stanford) and Matthew Giles (Southern California.
Two more Southern California team players, Tim Sluiter and Jamie Lovemark were sharing third place on 70.

Ayrshire’s Shona Malcolm is
nominated as SLGA Chairman

PRESS RELEASED ISSUED BY SCOTTISH LADIES GOLFING ASSOCIATION
The Board of the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association is pleased to nominate Miss Shona Malcolm C.A. as Chairman of the Association for the three years from January 2009. The term of office of the current Chairman, Mrs Pat Wilson, expires at the Annual General Meeting in January 2009.
Currently Chairman of the SLGA’s Business Development Group and the “One Plan for Golf” steering group, and a Board member of clubgolf, the national junior golf initiative in Scotland, Shona will bring a wealth of golf knowledge and experience to the role of Chairman.
A Chartered Accountant by profession, Shona is currently working with the Ladies’ Golf Union to deliver the LGU’s Business Plan.
A native of Prestwick, the venue of the first Open Championship in 1860, Shona became involved in golf administration in the early 1980eighties and served as Treasurer of the SLGA from 1996-2001, before taking on the role of Councillor on the Ladies’ Golf Union in 2007. She is a member of both Prestwick St. Nicholas and Prestwick St. Cuthbert Golf Clubs, and was Lady Captain of the latter in its Centenary Year, 1999.
The appointment of a Chairman for three years marks an important stage in the SLGA’s development which has, in recent years, seen the Association take on responsibility for handicapping, course rating and the running in Scotland of the former LGU medals, as well as the implementation of a change in business model from being an unincorporated association to a company limited by guarantee.
Pat Wilson, the present Chairman, says:
“I am delighted that Shona is to become our new three year Chairman bringing continuity to the role. Shona brings, not only tremendous experience of golfing administration having been Treasurer of the SLGA and an LGU Councillor, but also vast business knowledge from her professional role as a C.A.”
Shona says:
“I am very pleased to have been nominated as Chairman of the SLGA at these exciting and challenging times for ladies’ golf. The SLGA has a responsibility to protect and promote the interests of ladies’ golf in Scotland, celebrating the golfing legacies and traditions while encouraging more people to take up the sport.
"I genuinely believe that golf should be accessible to anyone, of either gender, who wants to play, and look forward to working in partnership under “One Plan for Golf” with our colleagues at the Scottish Golf Union and the PGA to achieve this goal.
"I look forward to contributing to the ongoing modernisation initiatives, and to meeting and consulting with many of the SLGA’s members in the coming months and years.”

Andy McLachlan is boys' winner at Kingsbarns

Carly shows class in winning Scottish
Junior Champion girls' title with 67

FROM THE SCOTTISH GOLF UNION WEBSITE
Carly Booth was crowned the queen of Kingsbarns today (November 2) as she produced a regal five-under-par 67 in winning the Scottish Junior Champion of Champions girls' title at Kingsbarns Link, Fife.
All national and county champions were invited to create a high quality field. Yet on the same links that older brother Wallace went unbeaten when playing for Great Britain & Ireland in the St Andrews Trophy earlier this year, Carly – who this year became the youngest ever member of a Curtis Cup team - was in a class of her own.
Five birdies in the first seven holes and eight in all meant that in spite of losing a ball to double bogey the 14th, the 16-year-old from Comrie won by a commanding five-shot margin. Rachel McQueen of Troon Ladies was the only girl to match par.
It was a fine way to round off the season for the Scottish Under-18 match-play girls champion who had only played the course once before in a practice round with her brother. That proved to be a chastening experience for Wallace as Carly demonstrated her form when, in spite of him forcing her to pay off the men’s tees, she beat the newly crowned world champion.
“That round with Wallace gave me a lot of confidence for this event,” said the plus three-handicapper who won the prestigious European Young Masters as a 15-year-old last season.
“The conditions were really clear and fresh today and I played really well, so I’m delighted with this result.”
The boys' event was a closer run affair with Bonnyton’s Andy McLachlan matching Booth’s 67 to win by two strokes from Mark Dickson of Gullane. An unblemished front nine saw McLachlan set up an unassailable lead as he produced five birdies to go out in 31.
Curiously, he too lost a ball at the 14th to double bogey that hole. Yet the advantage he had built up meant he had enough of an advantage to hold off Dickson’s challenge in spite of the Gullane player producing back to back eagles at the 11th and 12th holes, as well as birdieing that tricky 14th.
“I collected at pretty much every hole…my putting went really well,” said the 16-year-old who won this year’s SGU Junior Tour event at Kilmarnock (Barassie).
McLachlan, a plus one handicapper, has had to make adjustments to his game after a substantial growth spurt over the winter and felt this title was a reward for that hard work.
“I’ve worked really hard and it is all beginning to come together,” said the Scotland under-18 squad member.
“I’m in a really good frame of mind and I’m really looking forward to our SGU warm weather training camp in Portugal.”

Michigan State KO top seeds UCLA
in College Women's Match-play

FROM THE MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY WEBSITE
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - In one of the biggest upsets in the history of the Hooters Collegiate Women's Match-play championship, eighth-seeded Michigan State defeated No. 1 seed and third-ranked UCLA in the first round of championship bracket play on Monday afternoon.
In the semi-finals, MSU is currently tied with fifth-seeded Duke at two matches apiece. The fifth and deciding match is all square after 16 holes but was called in due to darkness and will resume Tuesday morning.
The Spartans and Bruins each claimed two matches and tied another, but Michigan State moved on due to the tie-breaker. Michigan State's players were six holes ahead when they won their match, while the UCLA players who won their matches were only five holes ahead.
"This is a monumental moment in program history," said head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll. "In all my years as a coach and a player here at Michigan State, this is one of the biggest accomplishments for the program. It feels great and our team is so excited.
"UCLA is loaded, but we proved today we can play with anyone. We have a great group of kids who believe in themselves and made it happen today. We encourage them to play in as many tournaments as possible in the summer, and they were definitely prepared and comfortable out there. These kids will remember this forever and the memories are priceless."
The Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship features 16 teams, all of which entered the tournament ranked among the top 50 in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. The teams were split into two brackets - championship and consolation - based on their finish in the 36-hole stroke-play competition held Sunday.
The Spartans finished eighth, while the Bruins cruised to the top seed, finishing nine strokes better than second-place Virginia.
Three of UCLA's five players were ranked 31st or better nationally, but the Spartans held off the Bruins to advance. Sally Watson shoots level par in

competitive comeback in USA

FROM THE GOLFWEEK WEBSITE
HOOTERS WOMEN'S COLLEGE MATCH-PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP AT REUNION, FLORIDA
Practice makes perfect: Sally Watson was out watching her older sister Rebecca play for Tennessee. The Scottish star had knee surgery immediately after the Curtis Cup this past summer and played her first competitive round Sunday at the David Leadbetter Academy.

“I was so nervous to begin with,” said Watson, who shot even par. “It was a little silly really since it was a little competition.”

Sally, a 2009 graduate, said she committed to Stanford University in large part because she felt its new practice facility would give her an edge.“There’s not a shot you can’t practise there,” she saad. “It’s definitely something special.”

Gutsy finish by Hannah Burke

earns her share of 4th place

Hannah Burke from Hertfordshire, a student at Baylor University, Waco in Texas, put in a gutsy finish to improve from joint 15th to fourth equal in a field of 90 players for the Challenge at Wolfdancer women's college tournament at Wolfdancer Golf Club, Austin in Texas.
Hannah (pictued by Cal Carson Golf Agency) struggled to a pair of 77s in Sunday's first two rounds over a testing 6,141yd, par-72 course and in steady rain.
But she immediately started to climb up the leaderboard in Monday's third and final round. Starting at the 14th hole, she had an eagle 3 at the 498yd 18th and a birdie at the eighth.
But for a bogey at her last hole, the ninth, Hannah would have finished in fourth place on her own behind the joint winners on five-over 221: Megan Dowdy (Texas Tech) and Victoria Stefansen (Iowa State).
Hannah's closing 72 for 226 was one of only five par-matching rounds over the 54 holes and was the joint best of the final day .
Ami Storey from Ponteland in the North-east of England and a freshman student at Kansas State had a rough time over the three rounds. She finished with scores of 83, 83 and 86 for joint 71st place on 252.
Colorado (928) won the team title in a photo-finish with Texas Tech and Texas State who both totalled 929. Baylor, with no support for Hannah Burke, finished only 10th on 960. Kansas State were 14th of 16 on 989.

Irish Ladies Golf Union launch new winter
competitive enterprise at district level

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION

The Irish Ladies Golf Union will this weekend launch a new initiative to provide competitive golf for Ireland’s elite female athletes over the winter months.
The “ILGU Winterpros” is a round-robin tournament played over three weekends at Moyvalley in Co. Kildare. The five Districts nominate four players each while the students on Paddy Harrington Golf Scholarship at NUI Maynooth make up a sixth team.
Each team plays each other during the first five sessions with the final session’s opponents determined by rankings in the six-team table.
Commenting on the new initiative, Sinead Heraty, Chief Executive of the ILGU, said:
“We observed that successful teams like the Ryder Cup do not come together as a squad until the team is selected. Traditionally, we held national coaching sessions for squads but we will now hold district training sessions for 140 players with the top 24 competing against each other six times by next February.”
In addition to encouraging players to continue playing over the winter months, the initiative will aid Ireland’s top women golfers sharpen their game for the coming season. The second and third series of matches will take place next January and February.

Annika Sorenstam
finishes with 65
and then wins
China play-off

FROM THE LADIES' EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
World No. 3 Annika Sorenstam secured her 89th career title with a great final round of 65 and then a play-off victory in the Suzhou Taihu Ladies Open in China today.
The 38-year-old Swede, pictured right, defeated China's Li Ying Ye at the second extra hole of a sudden death play-off in the inaugural event at Suzhou Taihu International Golf Club in Suzhou.
Five strokes behind Ye overnight, Sorenstam shot a final round of seven-under 65 for a three-round total of 13-under 203 to tie with Ye at the end of regulation play.
Both players birdied the first play-off hole but Sorenstam clinched the victory when Ye missed a short putt at the second extra hole. The win was worth 30,000 Euros but the title in what she has said will be her last full competitive season probably meant more to the millionaire Swede.
Sorenstam, who fired eight birdies and one bogey in the final round, drew one stroke clear of Ye after a birdie at the 16th but temporarily lost her lead when Ye birdied the 17th. Both players birdied the par 5 18th hole.
"I had a good start and that's what I wanted to do. Ye played well throughout the tournament and it was difficult to play the catch-up game with her until I managed to draw level at the 15th hole,” Sorenstam said.
"I tried my best to apply the pressure on her but she never succumbed to it and I thought anything could happen in the play-off. This is my 89th career win and I'm so happy,” she added. Ye, who held the lead for the first two rounds in the three-day event, said:
"I made a couple of mistakes. Today my game was good and at times I've failed to check my game, thus I made costly mistakes and lost three or four stokes, that was as good as being in the bag. I hope to learn from this experience and improve further to be able to participate in big tournaments."
Sharing third place, seven shots behind the play-off participants, on a six-under 210 total were Thailand’s Porani Chutichai (68), Amanda Moltke-Leth of Denmark (68) and Australia's Karen Lunn (71), who is the chairman of the Ladies European Tour.
Lunn was disappointed with the two bogeys she had on the home stretch and said: "It was unforced errors and I should have done better. I missed a couple of close putts and though I'm in this position (joint third), I'm not happy with my play today."
In her final round, birdied the first, second, fourth, fifth and ninth in an outward 31, bogeying the 10th, and then finishing strongly with birdies at the 14th, 16th and 18th.
Lynn Kenny (Archerfield Links) signed off with a par 72 for one-over-par total of 217, which earned her a share of 28th place and 2,040 Euros. She was the leading UK and Ireland player.
