Stefania Croce now leads by two shots
going into last round in France

FROM THE LADIES' EUROPEAN TOUR
Italian Stefania Croce shot a third round 71 today to establish a two-stroke lead going into Sunday's final round of Vediorbis Open de France Dames at Arras.
The 1992 Ford Ladies Classic champion finished the third day on a total of 10-under-par 206, ahead of Sweden’s Nina Reis, who had a 72.
“I started roughly on the first hole but finished under par so it was good,” said the 38-year-old Croce from Como. She double bogeyed the par-four first hole after hitting her driver left, but picked up shots at the fifth, 13th and 14th holes.
Having entered the third round with a one stroke lead, Croce admitted: “I had a little bit more pressure being on top but I think I played better today because I hit more greens. The difference is making putts. If you make putts you go low.”
Croce trailed Reis by two strokes after 15 holes in the third round, the Swede having birdied holes nine, ten, 13 and 15. However, the 28-year-old from the Kungalv, who was the runner-up at last week’s Göteborg Masters after shooting 61 in the last round, then the tripled bogeyed the 17th and bogeyed the 18th.
At the par-4 17th she hit her driver right and was forced to chip out to the fairway, before taking four putts. “I felt I was playing really well and then I had the triple bogey on 17, so that’s not good. I played well generally and I will try to keep that in mind,” said Reis.
“If someone would have told me before the tournament that I would have been second going into the last round of the tournament I would have been happy but somehow it still feels a little bit sad.”
German Anja Monke and England’s Laura Davies both shot 65 and moved up into a share of third position on six-under-par 209 entering the final round. They both carded eight birdies and one bogey.
Davies, who won her 70th title in Austria a fortnight ago, said: “The course sets really well to my eye which is one of the reasons why I wanted to come back. I knew I liked it and sure enough I’ve had a decent round today. We’re playing in good weather and you can’t beat it.
“The idea was to come back to Europe and get a bit more confidence back. I’ve won, had a few top-tens and had a few laughs, so it’s worked. I feel like I’m playing well again.”
Monke added: “I’m delighted with my score. I didn’t putt as badly as yesterday. I hit some good shots and made some good putts.”
Monke is aiming for her first victory in five years on tour.
Spaniard Tania Elosegui shared of fifth with Sweden’s Cecilia Ekelundh on five-under-par, with England’s Georgina Simpson, Australia’s Leah Hart and France’s Anne-Lise Caudal a shot further back in a share of seventh.
England’s Lisa Hall, her compatriot Felicity Johnson and Spain’s Paula Marti all continued their recent good run of form finishing the day in a tie for 10th place.

COLIN FARQUHARSON'S SCOTSWATCH: Jenna Wilson, the only Scot to survive the halfway cut, had a 74 to be sharing 44th place on 221. The Strathaven player had four birdies - at the fifth, 13th, 14th and 17th - but too many bogeys (six on the day) to see her make significant headway up the leaderboard.

Janice Moodie leads LPGA Tour

event at halfway

Glasgow exile Janice Moodie, without a win on the US LPGA Tour since 2002, leads by one shot from world No 1 Lorena Ochoa after two rounds of the Navistar LPGA Classic
The Mexican's losing run dates back only as far as May.
Ochoa had seven birdies en route to a five-under 67 and a 12-under total of 134.
Moodie, pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, starting at the 10th, birdied five of her first nine holes on her way to a five-under 67 for 133.
Moodie's last victory on the LPGA Tour came at the Asahi Ryokuken International Championship six years ago but the Scot said it was too soon to focus on ending that winless run.
"I'm just enjoying the moment right now and trying to keep everything smooth and trying to keep the putting stroke smooth, the golf swing going smooth, and I'll get to that on Sunday," Moodie said.
American Jill McGill, part of a trio sharing the lead after the first round, fired a three-under 69 to join Ochoa on 134.

Stefania Croce, chasing first win
since 1992, leads in France

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Italy’s Stefania Croce maintained her overnight lead after the second round of the Vediorbis Open de France Dames today.
Croce shot rounds of 67 and 68 at Le Golf D’Arras for a halfway total of nine-under-par 135. She was six-under-par for her opening six holes after four birdies and an eagle.
"I feel good. I am playing good golf, sinking some putts but I hope to play as well and putt as well over the next two days,” said Croce, whose sole LET victory was the 1992 Ford Ladies Classic.
After birdies on the first, third and fourth holes, the 38-year-old from Como chipped in from 50 yards for eagle on the par-5 fifth hole and also birdied the next, going out in 30 strokes.
She admitted to feeling slightly nervous on the back nine and birdied the 13th but took three bogeys on holes 11, 14 and 17.
Sweden’s Nina Reis, runner-up in last week's Goteborg Masters after equalling the Ladies European Tour's lowest round with an 11-under-par 61, finished the day a shot further back after a 69.
Level par for the front nine, she picked up the pace with three birdies in a row from the 14th hole. She said: “My form is still good. I feel like everything is bumping my way so I hope it stays like this.”
Denmark’s Iben Tinning fired a hole in one in the second round. She holed out with a 54 degree wedge on the 14th to improve to five under par for the tournament after rounds of 70 and 69.
The 34-year-old from Copenhagen won a Peugeot 207 CC car for her fourth career hole in one. She previously won a gold bar for her ace at the 14th in the third round of the 2005 Evian Masters.
“What I could see was that it landed pin high but we couldn’t see anything more than that. Some of the guys screamed that it was in the hole. I’m very happy,” said the four-time Solheim Cup player.
Anne-Lise Caudal of France, currently ninth on the LET’s New Star Money List after her maiden win at the Open de Portugal, finished fourth on four-under-par, with Sweden’s Cecilia Ekelundh a shot further back in fifth.
A group of five players shared sixth position on two-under-par: French rookie Julie Greciet, South Korea’s Amy Yang, Belgium’s Lara Tadiotto and the English duo of Samantha Head and Felicity Johnson.
Head’s 66 was the lowest round of the tournament so far and lifted her from a share of 86th place overnight. “I didn’t play very well yesterday and after the round I slept for a couple of hours in the hotel here and then I hit some balls and worked on my game. It wasn’t for today, it was just for peace of mind and I just played better,” Head explained.
“I just play each day as it comes ... and I’m so full of clichés! I knew the greens would be quite bobbly this afternoon and the only thing you can do when there have been lots of people on the greens is just trust your stroke. I’m just going to do the same, trust myself and just enjoy it.
“I’m starting to realise that it doesn’t really matter what preparation you put in, if it’s your day it’s your day and today it was.”
COLIN FARQUHARSON'S SCOTSWATCH
A good day for Jenna Wilson, who beat the cut at 149 or better ... a bad day for Clare Queen and Lynn Kenny.
Clare missed out by two shots after bogeying the 16th, 17th and 18th for a 78 and 151. How galling to think that three pars instead of three bogeys would have taken her through. Clare had bogeyed the 16th and 17th in her first round so there must be something about the closing holes that the Scot doesn't like.
Lynn had not a single birdie in a second-round 81 for 158. A triple bogey 7 at the 15th epitomised how she was playing rather than making any difference to her chances of making the cut. They had gone by then.
Jenna starts Saturday in joint 40th place after a 73 for 147.
Inverness-based New Zealander Elizabeth McKinnon had a 78 for 158.

JUNIOR CUP SEMI-FINALS
Enniscorthy 3, Ballybunion 2

Enniscorthy, 2007 champions in both the Junior Foursomes and Intermediate Cup, look to capture the Junior Cup title at Limerick Golf Club.
Enniscorthy progressed to the final, defeating Ballybunion in a closely fought contest. Ballybunion, with two wins under their belt courtesy of Margaret McAuliffe and Pat Joyce, were in pole position but Jennifer King and Laura Dempsey both had 3 and 1 wins to level the affair. Cora Mernagh secured victory for Enniscorthy by beating Toni Quilter 2 and 1 in the final match.
Mountbellew 3, Dun Laoghaire 2
Mountbellew, a team of youth and experience, beat Dun Laoghaire in their semi-final and now face Enniscorthy in Sunday’s final. Mountbellew had two wins under their belt before Dun Laoghaire’s Laura Daly secured her match on the 19th, having been two down.
The balance however, remained in favour of Mountbellew and Helen Costello sealed the victory with a 3 and 2 win against Roly Burke.
MINOR CUP SEMI-FINALS

Carlow 3½, Lee Valley 1½

Carlow had an extremely nail-biting affair with Southerners Lee Valley with all matches being won by the narrowest of margins. Phyll Farrell put up the first result for Carlow. Phyll was three down on the 14th but went on to win by one hole.
Team-mate Aine O’Shea took Margaret Ahern to the 19th before winning the point while Kitty O’Sullivan kept Lee Valley in the match with a one-hole victory.
In the fourth match, Pat McArdle secured Carlow’s place in Sunday’s final against Malahide. She beat Sandra Cooke at the 19th.
Malahide 4, Donegal 1

Malahide had a resounding victory against Donegal with Ciara Smith, Maire Falvey and Yvonne Power all winning against Donegal’s Dianne Doherty, Catherine Harvey and Aoife McGarvey respectively. The remaining two matches on the course were called in with the result in favour of Malahide.
CHALLENGE CUP SEMI-FINALS

Tara Glen 1, Monkstown 4

Monkstown put an end to Tara Glen’s dream of winning an All-Ireland final with a fine display of golf. Leone Levis, Ger O’Keeffe and Ruth Coulter were all sharply off the blocks for Monkstown and recorded three wins from the top down against Tara Glen’s Aileen O’Hanrahan, Margaret Mooney and Eilish McCarthy respectively.
Athenry 3, Powerscourt 2

Cheers and tears rang around the Clubhouse at Limerick when Athenry’s Sara Byrne holed her winning putt on the 19th to lead her team to their first All Ireland final. Powerscourt who started the contest the stronger were devastated.
Powerscourt’s Elizabeth Desmond won 7 and 6 and team-mate Bairbre O’Brien followed her with a one-hole win. Athenry then came back with Carmel Burke winning 3 and 2, while Maria Conlon won her match against Marie Clarkson at the last after her Powerscourt opponent found a bunker. With the match level, all eyes looked anxiously down the 19th until cheers from the blue jumpers confirmed the outcome in Athenry’s favour.

2008 SENIORS’ HOME INTERNATIONAL MATCHES

England’s Senior Champions, Janet Collingham and Susan Dye, will lead the English team in their bid for a sixth successive Seniors’ Home International crown when the annual round robin matches take place at Little Aston Golf Club from the 30th September - 2nd October.
England has selected the same team which finished fourth at the recent European Senior Ladies’ Team Championships at Wouwse Plantage Golf Club in the Netherlands.
Given England’s impressive record in the Senior Home Internationals they are sure to head into this annual four-cornered event as buoyant as ever and will look to continue their dominance of the matches. England has won the annual event ever year since it’s inception in 2003.
There may however, still be hope for the other countries as this year’s team only sees three of last year's triumphant English side return to defend their title.
Scotland, runners-up in last year's event at Royal Tara, also have quality in their side with both the Scottish Seniors’ Matchplay Champion Lorna Bennett, and newly crowned Scottish Veterns’ Champion, Fiona de Vries, among four players returning from last year’s team. Mary McKenna, the eight-times Irish champion and the captain of the GB&I team for the 2009 Vagliano Trophy and 2010 Curtis Cup, as well as Irish Seniors’ Close Champion Sheena O’Brien Kenney are included in Ireland's title – seeking squad.
Former Curtis Cup player Vicki Thomas, who has won both the Welsh Matchplay title and the Irish Seniors’ Open crown this season, will be hoping her individual success can rub off on her team-mates and help Wales make a strong challenge for honours, while Welsh Stroke play Champion, Jane Rees also lines up in a strong Welsh side.
The format of the Matches will see each Country compete in 3 Foursomes followed by 5 Singles matches on each of the three days.

Lynn (306) finished third behind Stetson and Florida Southern (301), based on the first-round scores.

INJURY-HIT SCOTS SCHOOLBOYS LOSE NARROWLY
BUT SCHOOLGIRLS GO DOWN 7-2

England narrowly beat Scotland in the annual schoolboys' golf international match at Royal Lytham & St Anne's Golf Club, Lancashire today (Monday) ... but the Scots were well beaten in the schoolgirls' contest at the same venue.
In the boys' match, the scores were tied at 3-3 afer the morning foursomes and it went right down to the wire in the singles, at the end of which England had won by a single point, 9 1/2-8 1/2.
Chris Corbett (St Joseph's College, Dumfries) injured his back and had to retire after five holes of his foursomes match with Sam Strachan (Fraserburgh Academy) against Jamie Brittain and John Evans.
That match was conceded by the Scots to the English. Corbett was unable to play his afternoon singles tie against Luke Bramhall but the organisers agreed that it should be declared a halved match.
Matt Kippen clinched overall victory for England by beating Ian Redford (St Leonards School, St Andrews) by 3 and 2.
In the girls' match, England won 7-2 after taking the foursomes 2-1.
Had it not been for Sammy Vass from Tain holing an 20ft birdie putt on the last to beat Heidi Baek by one hole, England would have been a clean sweep of the six singles.

FIONA DE VRIES WINS SCOTTISH
VETERANS' CHAMPIONSHIP

St Andrews hotelier Fiona de Vries, first-round leader and eventually sixth in last week's Senior British women's open amateur golf championship at Hilton Templepatrick, near Belfast, won the Scottish Veteran Ladies Golf Association championship, contested by the eight area veteran championship winners over the Lansdowne course, Blairgowrie.
Fiona, pictured right, did not have it all her own way by any means. In the morning semi-finals, the St Rule player had to go to the 20th to take the measure of Sheila Cuthbertson, the Borders veterans' champion.
In the other semi-final, Vivien Welsh (Highland) scored an upset win over former title-holder Kathleen Sutherland (Northern) by one hole.
The final went all the way before Fiona beat Vivien on the 18th green.

Kelso’s girls only clubgolf coaching group with volunteer coach Fiona Ker and Pro Steve Johnston at the Roxburghe (image by Rob Eyton-Jones).

Kelso lead Borders' way with girls-only coaching

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ROB EYTON-JONES
Kelso, one of the first Border golf clubs to sign up for the national junior golf programme, clubgolf, has become one of the first clubs in the Borders to begin girls-only coaching.
Doubling the number of girls playing golf in Scotland is a clear goal of clubgolf, the partnership between the Scottish Golf Union, the Scottish Ladies' Golfing Association, the Professional Golfers' Association, the Golf Foundation and sportscotland, which emerged from Scotland’s successful bid to host the Ryder Cup.
Research in 2005 showed there were fewer than 50,000 female golf club members (as opposed to 198,500 male club golf members). In the under 18 level, there were 25,000 boys but just 2,700 girls. Compare that to Sweden, which has more than 22,000 girls under the age of 18 playing golf and drastic action was needed.
“We had plenty of boys at Kelso but we didn’t have a single girl,” said Fiona Ker, who along with fellow club member Eleanor Pearson became a clubgolf volunteer coach two seasons ago.
“We felt something had to happen so we decided to encourage the girls by keeping them in the same coaching group developing their friendships therefore enjoying coming to our sessions.”
By starting girls-only golf coaching Kelso are using a formula piloted in Grampian two years ago. So successful were Aberdeenshire clubs in retaining girls that last year clubgolf’s Girls in Golf programme was launched nationwide by tour players, Kathryn Imrie and Clare Queen.
“We got six girls involved in the first year and they had an absolute ball and bonded well,” said Mrs Ker. “This season we’ve got the girls group up to 10 and some weeks they can have up to three nights of coaching.
“We have our own weekly coaching sessions at Kelso. Steve Johnston sees them on a Thursday for coaching at the Roxburghe. The Border Ladies have also been actively supporting the youngsters by arranging a monthly clinic with Frankie Scott, the Pro at Ashkirk.”
Steve is delighted with the girls’ progress and is already planning further coaching through the winter months. “The foundations are already there because of the time and work Fiona and Eleanor have put in at the club,” he said.
“The girls are extremely keen and they work well together. The key is having them working in pairs so they can help each other; whoever is not hitting is checking what the other person is doing so they check up on what they’ve been taught.
“We’ll just keep building on what they know and next summer we will aim to get some handicaps organised, reduce handicaps of those that have already got them and hopefully see more progress.”
One of the group, 12 year old Danielle Ker, has been playing golf through Kelso’s clubgolf programme and already boasts a handicap of 34. A perfect advert for girls-only coaching, she is making her mark in competitions after winning three events this summer.
“Golf is my favourite sport and I want to do my best at all times and get quite far with it,” she said. “I’ve played in mixed groups before but the coaching is a lot more fun when you’re just with girls, and more sociable too.”
This week, before their eleventh coaching session of the summer at the Roxburghe course the girls were presented with official kit from the Post Office who have stepped forward to help the girls only cause.
“The Royal Mail Sports Foundation have given us a grant of £200,” said Mrs Ker. “We have used it to purchase wind tops which we have had their names embroidered on. It’s great to see them all together in the same kit out on the course.”
Like the other seven girls, eight year old Megan Brennan was thrilled with the new kit, “The tops are a different colour that people wouldn’t normally wear. They’re bright and they’ve got our names on them. They’re really cool.”
The 2008 golf season might be nearing its closing stages but the Club is already planning the next stage in the evolution of its girls coaching, an inter club event with girls from other local clubs.
“It will be quite a challenge because there aren’t many clubs in the Borders who have girls at this level,” said Mrs Ker. “We need to get enough youngsters who are capable of playing at least nine holes.
“One of our girls has a handicap and at least two more should have them next year. These are girls who started last year so it shows what’s possible.”
If your golf club is interested in introducing girls only coaching, starting a clubgolf junior development programme or you are a girl that is interested in playing golf then please contact Laura Rushby, clubgolf East Regional Manager on:

Gwladys Nocera sets L E T record
of 29-under-par 259 in Sweden

FROM THE LADIES' EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Gwladys Nocera from France won her ninth Ladies European Tour title since May 2006 with a record-breaking performance at the Göteborg Masters in Gothenburg, Sweden today.
The 33-year-old sixth year tour player sealed her fourth title of the year with the best 72-hole score in the LET’s 30-year history. She finished with a six-under 66 at Lycke Golf Club to close the tournament at 29-under-par 259.
“It feels good!” said Nocera who broke Laura Davies’ previous record in relation to par of 25-under 267, set at the 1995 Guardian Irish Holidays Open at St Margaret’s.
The raw score of 267 had also been recorded by Davies at the 1988 Biarritz Ladies Open and by Juli Inkster at the 2003 Evian Masters.
“I really didn’t think I could shoot that low when I came here. It’s probably much better than I expected.”
The current European No 2 began the final round with an eight-stroke lead over Spain’s Paula Marti but stretched that into an 11-shot victory over Nina Reis of Sweden. Reis, a 28-year-old from the nearby town of Kungalv, fired an 11-under-par 61 and tied the record for the LET’s all time lowest round set by England’s Kirsty Taylor at the 2005 Wales Ladies Open at Machynys Peninsula.
Reis was 12-under-par for the day after 17 holes and a score of 59 looked possible, but she bogeyed the last to drop back to 18-under-par 270 for second place, her career best finish on the LET.
When asked if thoughts of a 59 were on her mind standing on the 18th tee, Reis admitted: “I thought about it but I also thought that I just wanted to make par and have a good tournament. That was the most important thing.
“I was a little bit shaky but I just wanted to hit a good shot and I thought “If I hit the bunker I will just chip out.”” That was what happened. On the 18th, Reis hit her driver into a bunker and as she tried to chip it out it hit the edge, just landing on the grass.
Reis’s round included three eagles, at the seventh, 11th and 17th holes, seven birdies and two bogeys. Her previous best round was 64 set on the US-based Cactus Tour in April and matched at the Ladies German Open in May.
England’s Felicity Johnson finished a shot further back in third on 17-under after a final round of 68. She dropped a shot at the par-4 18th but matched her previous career best finishes of third at the 2007 Northern Ireland Ladies Open and in February’s ANZ Ladies Masters.
“I would have taken it at the start of the week so this has given me a lot of confidence for the last two events. I’m chuffed to bits with it really,” said second-year player Johnson. “This has given me some confidence for France and Madrid and hopefully I will go a step further next time.” Nocera’s three birdies in a row from the second hole, followed by a bogey on the fifth hole, gave her an outward total of two-under 34 and a nine stroke lead heading into the back nine.
A 30ft birdie putt at the 10th took her to 26-under par, and made the back nine a breeze with further birdies on holes 12, 16 and 17.
She had a 20ft birdie chance to reach 30-under at the par-four 18th but two putted for par. When the ball dropped, Nocera’s French colleagues stormed onto the green and soaked her in celebratory champagne.
“It is funny because on the fairway I said to my caddie Raf, “It would be fun to have champagne today because it’s my fourth one,” said Nocera, such has become the French tradition on tour. She will now head to the Vediorbis Open de France Dames at Anzin St Aubin in northern France, where she is hoping to win next week on home soil.

FIFE ARE SCOTTISH COUNTY CHAMPIONS

Fife survived a last-day wobble to win the Scottish women’s county golf championship at Inchmarlo Golf Resort, Banchory today.
Fife completed the three-day programme with three match wins out of three, clinching the title by beating Perth & Kinross 5-4 after earlier wins by 7-2 over Borders and 6-3 against Renfrewshire.
Perth & Kinross looked as though they might upset the Fife flow towards the title when they took the foursomes 2-1 but wins in the singles by Louise Kenney, Fiona Hastie, Elaine Moffat and Lorna Bennett took Fife over the winning line.
Renfrewshire, who beat Borders 7-2 in their final match, finished runners-up.
Fife last won the title at The Hirsel in 2006 and before that at Prestonfield in 1995 and Dumfries & County Golf Club in 1975.
The most successful competitors over the three-day programme were Fiona Hastie for Fife and Megan Briggs for Renfrewshire. Both gained 5 1/2pt out of a possible 6.
Close behind was Eilidh Briggs (Renfrewshire) with 5 out of 6 and two players with 4 1/2pt from only five outings, Elaine Moffat (Fife) and Perth & Kinross youngster Annabel Niven.
Next year's Scottish county championship finals will be hosted by Baberton Golf Club, Edinburgh.
