LAURA DAVIES BOUNCES BACK
TO LEAD IN AUSTRIA WITH
ONE ROUND TO GO

Just a week after failing to survive the cut in the De Vere Ladies Scottish Open, Laura Davies showed her talent for being able to put bad rounds behind her by firing a course record, seven-under-par 65 to take a one-stroke lead going into the third and final round of the UNIQA Ladies Open near Vienna, Austria.
Davies, who carded a 69 in her first round at Golfclub Forenwald in Wiener Neustadt on Friday, is on 10 under par.
Defending champion Sophie Gustafson of Sweden, last week's at The Carrick at Cameron House, carded a six-under 66 and is alone in second place.
Italian Diana Luna is two strokes further back on seven under.
Davies, who began the day two strokes behind overnight leader Sarah Nicholson, said: "I'm playing well. Sophie's playing well too and some of the other players are up there, so it won't be easy.
"I'll have to see how I go on Sunday. If I play like I did the last two days, I'll have a very good chance."
Inverness-based New Zealander Liz McKinnon (pictured above) is in her best position of her pro career - joint third on 140 (70-70) with one round to go.
Claire Queen had one of her best rounds of the season to qualify on 141 with a second-round 68. The Scot birdied the fourth, seventh, eighth and ninth and had no bogeys.
Lynn Kenny also survived with 72 and 73 for 145 but Kathryn Imrie failed to make the cut mark of 147 after scores of 75 and 78 for 153.
Becky Brewerton was a surprise non-qualifier with 76 and 74 for 150.

ELGA PRESS RELEASE

ELGA MEMBERS VOTE TO MODERNISE ASSOCIATION

Members of the English Ladies’ Golf Association have voted to modernise their organisation to drive forward women’s golf.
They backed changes to create a more modern, capable and efficient governing body at an extraordinary general meeting at the National Motorcycle Museum, Solihull today.
Over half of the 1780 golf clubs affiliated to ELGA voted on four resolutions, which were put to the meeting at the end of a two-year period of consultation with members and after a wide-ranging debate on the issues. All four were passed with majorities of at least 70 per cent.
Altogether, over 1100 votes were cast on each resolution and ELGA chief executive Pauline Perla told the meeting: “This is the largest number of votes we have received in the history of the association. Whatever the outcome, the decision will have been made by a majority of members.”
ELGA president Diane Bailey said: “I am delighted that we have had the support of well over 70 per cent of our voters to enable us to make the changes which are essential for the future of women’s golf in England.
“Our mission is Driving Women’s Golf and I assure you that’s what we will all be working towards. I hope those who have had mixed feelings about certain aspects will give it time and give their support to ensure a successful future for the association.”
The vote means that ELGA will now be incorporated as a company limited by guarantee and known as the English Women’s Golf Association.
It will be run by a management board with the business skills needed to drive forward women’s golf, for example in communications, marketing, sponsorship and information technology.
An operational board, whose members will come from the counties, will look after the core golfing activities of the association, such as championships and tournaments, handicapping, course rating, selection of squads for training and England teams.
Counties will be organised into six regions, each of which will be represented on the operational board. There will be more direct communication between clubs, counties and the association.
Voting procedures within the association have been simplified. The changes will come into effect from 1 January 2008.
The changes are designed to support ELGA’s mission of Driving Women’s Golf by:

IMPROVING communications within the organisation.
IMPROVING the image of women’s golf.
HELPING women achieve equality in golf.
IMPROVING services to members and clubs.
PUTTING more focus on volunteers.
GIVING women and girl golfers more opportunities to improve.

ELGA’s modernisation review began in September 2005 and has included an extensive survey, workshops and consultation days involving divisions, counties and clubs.
ELGA chief executive Pauline Perla told the meeting: “It has taken us two years of workshops and consultation to be here today. We know that change is not easy, but it is necessary if we want to progress as an organisation.”
She added: “Women’s golf has a rich past, a healthy present and it could have an exciting future if you support change today.”
Tribute was paid at the meeting to the modernisation working group which had advised the ELGA executive during the consultation period: ELGA chairman Sarah Miller from the South-East, vice-chairman Ruth Whitehead and Hilary Green from the North, Ros Weston from the Midlands and Carolyn Maynard from the South West.

LYNN KENNY MATCHES PAR TO BE IN TOP 20
AFTER FIRST ROUND IN AUSTRIA

FROM THE LADIES' EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
New Zealand rookie Sarah Nicholson is the outright leader following the first round of the UNIQA Ladies Golf Open presented by Raiffeisen in Austria.
Nicholson posted a five-under-par 67 on Thursday afternoon after heavy rain at Golfclub Föhrenwald in Wiener Neustadt, near Vienna. Weather conditions caused the first round to be stretched over two days and the 72-hole tournament has been reduced to 54-holes.
A total of 30 players began their first rounds today, but none of them could catch Nicholson, who takes a one-stroke lead into the weekend. The 22-year-old New Zealander was one of a handful of players to complete 18 holes on Thursday, despite a 5 1/2hr delay in the morning due to flooded greens.
She carded six birdies – including three in her last four holes – and one bogey, and now holds a one-stroke lead over Italy’s Diana Luna in second place on four-under-par.
Luna began her first round on Friday morning but her tee-time was delayed by a further two hours after another session of heavy rain.
The 25-year-old, who was the Tenerife Ladies Open champion in 2004, made up for lost time, storming to a four-under 68, which included four birdies on the front nine. She also birdied the newly-reconstructed dogleg 13th and the 18th, but dropped single shots on the tenth and 17th.
Three players share a tie for third place on three-under-par. Sweden’s Sophie Gustafson, who won last week’s De Vere Ladies Scottish Open and who is the defending champion, carded a faultless 69 to sit alongside fellow Swede Elin Ohlsson and England’s Laura Davies.
Laura, who failed to beat the two-round cut in Scotland, had a typical round today which included an eagle 3 at the par-5 10th and a triple bogtey7 at the 13th.
Gustafson said: “I didn't think it played that easy today with the wind so I'm very happy with my three-under. I had a few more chances but I never assume to make everything so I'm still happy.
"So far so good. I don't think I started off with three-under last year so I'm already ahead of last year.”
Financial restrictions have limited Nicholson to just six appearances on the Ladies European Tour this season, having qualified for her card at the end of 2006. Her best finish was a tie for 28th place at the Northern Ireland Ladies Open in June. The Kiwi was delighted with her opening round score, and admitted she had no idea she was performing so well until after her round had finished.
“I didn’t really notice that I shot five-under on the back nine so I was surprised when I looked at my card,” she said. “I just let it happen, really. I’ve played pretty well and I hit the ball well off the tee, which you kind of have to do round here.”
Nicholson splits her time between the Swedish-based Telia Tour and the Ladies European Tour and said that her decision to play in Austria was influenced by her desire to earn full playing rights next season.
“I didn’t have enough money to come over for the whole year and get my full card,” said Nicholson, who spends a lot of time in Birmingham with relatives between tournaments.
“I came here (Europe) for three months to warm up for Q-School. I would say that I am just trying to get experience this year. I was a bit disappointed that I missed out on my full card, but it has definitely made me work a lot harder this year and work on my game.”
The cut, to 60 players and ties, is set to take place after Saturday’s second round. There is new order of play for round two, which means that the leaders will tee-off last tomorrow.
Colin Farquharson writes:
Inverness-based Kiwi Liz McKinnon had a fine bag of birdies - five in all - in returning a 70 for a share of sixth place.
Lynn Kenny came storming home in 33 with birdies at the 11th, 15th and 17th for a 72 which gave her a share of 19th place.
Clare Queen birdied the first, 12th and 18th but had too many bogeys to do better than a 73 for joint 34th place.
Kathryn Imrie is just inside the qualifying mark if she can hold that position through the second round. The Monifieth player birdied the 12th and 17th but had bogeys at the 13th, 14th and 15th for a 79 and joint 59th position.

LAUREN'S SECOND ACE HELPS HER WIN
CLUB JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

Thirteen-year-old Lauren Taylor has scored two holes-in-one this season – and created history at her golf club. For the second of Lauren’s aces helped her to become the first girl ever to win the Rugby Golf Club junior championship.
She scored the hole-in-one during the second round of the 36-hole competition, returning a one-over par 71. She added it to her earlier score of 77 and tied for the title with one of the boys. The youngsters played-off over three holes to decide the championship and Lauren’s birdie, bogey, par scores gave her victory.
“I’m the only girl who has ever won it and I was really pleased,” she said. The four-handicapper had her hole-in-one on the uphill 100yd eighth hole where she used a pitching wedge.
“I couldn’t see it because it’s an elevated green but two juniors on the ninth tee watched it and told me it had gone in. I thought they were joking!” said Lauren.
She had scored her first hole in one a few weeks earlier on the 145yd 12th hole where she used a seven-iron for her shot over water. On that occasion Lauren was playing in a junior medal. Lauren is also the Warwickshire girls’ U15 and U16 champion and has been in one of ELGA’s birdie squads this season.
“The coaching has helped me a lot, it’s improved my swing 100 per cent,” she said.

CAROLYN KIRK WINS NORTHERN
SENIORS' TITLE AT HEXHAM

Yorkshire’s Carolyn Kirk underlined her return to golfing form when she scored a three-stroke win in the English ladies’ northern regional seniors' stroke-play tournament at Hexham, Northumberland.
The Ganton player was sidelined last year with a slipped disc and although she continued playing, it was with a restricted swing.
“I was fighting for my health and I didn’t have a lot of fight left for golf, “ said Carolyn. “I am absolutely delighted with this win.”
Carolyn, who is also a member at York, has played in the English team at the European seniors’ team championship. She has also represented the Yorkshire second team and both the Yorkshire and Northern vets.
In this tournament Carolyn led from start to finish. She set the first round pace when she returned 79 for a one-shot advantage. In the second round Carolyn returned a three-over 77 which extended her lead to three shots.
Carolyn, who plays off three handicap, is back to taking part in the full circuit of seniors’ events. “It’s just nice to be fit enough to do it. It makes you appreciate it more,” she said.
Division B of the tournament was won by Ruth Studholme (Eaglescliffe) who had a pair of 87s and beat Celia Willis (Woking 85, 89) on a countback.

Coronation Foursomes winners
Karina Matson, Janet Brown (LGU Chairman), and Elspeth Adair.

LOTHIANBURN MOTHER & DAUGHTER WIN
LGU'S CORONATION FOURSOMES

Lothianburn Golf Club members mother and daughter Elspeth Adair and Karina Matson and won the Ladies Golf Union's Peugeot Coronation foursomes grand final over the Duke's Course, St Andrews on a day of wet conditions earlier this week.
Supported by their caddieing husbands, Karina, who plays off 18, and 19-handicapper Elspeth totalled 32 Stableford points to win by a single point from two English partnerships - Wendy Hurst and Sue Wilson from Sandiway and Susie Lee and Claire Kukielka (Wisley).
Over 1300 golf clubs took part in the preliminary stages with qualifying competitions which progressed into area finals. Karina and Elspeth qualified for the Grand Final by winning the Murrayfield area final.
Making their victory all the more praiseworthy is the fact that Karina has been playing competitively for only two years, during which time she has taken her handicap down steadily.
The added bonus for them is that they will be invited to compete in the pro-am preceding next year's Ricoh Women's British Open at Sunningdale Golf Club, Berkshire.
Only three Scottish pairings reached the final. The other two tied for seventh place with 27pts - Patricia Sykes and Sigrid Harley (Royal Montrose) and Lynn Forsyth and Pamela Buttar (Paisley).

KRYSTLE PAYS PRICE FOR SLOW START
IN SECOND US COLLEGE TOURNAMENT

Vagliano Trophy player Krystle Caithness (St Regulus), now a freshman student at the University of Georgia, could not make up the ground she lost with a moderate start in finishing joint 45th in her second tournament on the United States women's college circuit.
Caithness, 18, from Cellardyke, Fife, pictured right in her Georgia team shirt, had rounds of 79, 74 and 73 for a total of 226 over the par-73, New Mexico University course of 6,351yd at Albuquerque in the Margaret Branch NCAA Preview.
She had three double bogeys over her first two rounds but had two birdies and two bogeys in her par-matching final round. The Scot had eight birdies in all over the 54 holes.
Jodi Ewart (New Mexico University), from Catterick) tied for 15th place with rounds of 74, 71 and 72 for 217. That represented quite a comeback because Jodi was four over par after only 13 holes of the tournament, having bogeyed the eighth and 11th and double-bogeyed the 13th.
The Yorkshire girl then covered the remaining 41 holes in six under par with nine birdies and three bogeys).
Dutch girl Dewi-Claire Schreefel (Southern California) won the individual title with a 15-under-par total of 204, made up of rounds of 68, 69 and 67.
She finished four shots ahead of the top-ranked Amanda Blumenherst (Duke University) who is likely to be the star player in the US Curtis Cup team over the Old Course, St Andrews next May.
It was a field of the vast majority of the leading players on the US women's college circuit, including Belen Mozo and Azahara Munoz, past winners of the British girls' title and, in Mozo's case, also the British women's open amateur championship two years ago.
Swedish ace Anna Nordqvist, yet another past British girls champion, finished joint eighth. Anna lost to Carlota Ciganda in this year's British women's championship final at Alwoodley, Leeds.

AUSTRIAN EVENT CUT TO THREE ROUNDS
AFTER BIG RAIN DELAYS ON DAY ONE

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE

Ladies European Tour rookie Sarah Nicholson of New Zealand took the overnight lead following the first day’s play at a rain-beaten UNIQA Ladies Golf Open presented by Raiffeisen.
The 22-year-old shot a five-under 67 to take a two stroke clubhouse lead at Golfclub Föhrenwald in Wiener Neustadt, Vienna.
She has played in only five European events so far this season with a best finish of tied 28th in Northern Ireland. Sweden’s Elin Ohlsson was the next best placed player on three-under-par. Nicholson was one of a handful of players to have completed a full first round before first round play was suspended for the day at 6.40pm due to darkness. Heavy rainfall caused tournament officials to suspend play by more than five-and-a-half hours at 8.50am.
The first ten groups – playing off two tees – managed less than an hours’ play before the first round was halted as rain continued to batter the course. After several green inspections, officials finally allowed play to resume at 2.30pm.
The first round play will now be completed on Friday morning from 8am, with some time to spare in case of any further weather delays. The event will be reduced from 72 holes to 54 holes, with the cut taking place after the conclusion of the second round on Saturday to the leading 60 players and ties.
The final round remains scheduled for Sunday.

THREE NEW CAPS IN SCOTLAND TEAM
FOR SENIOR MEN'S HOME
INTERNATIONALS NEXT WEEK

There are three new caps in the Scotland team for next week’s, Tuesday to Thursday, senior men’s home amateur internationals at Caldy Golf Club, Cheshire – John Fraser, Jim Watt and Gordon Brown.
Fraser is a former Newtonmore shinty star who became a North-east District representative golfer when his teaching profession took him to Aberdeen. He has since moved to Edinburgh and is a member of the Royal Burgess club.
John has come to the fore in the inaugural over-55s Scottish circuit this year.
Gordon Brown is a Vale of Leven member who had a short spell as a senior tour professional when he reached the necessary age of 50, fulfilling a long-held ambition before being reinstated as an amateur in 2005. Brown was the leading Scot in this year’s British senior open amateur championship at Nairn. He had the lowest final round of 67 to finish joint seventh.
Jim Watt (Letham Grange), too, has done well on the new Scottish seniors circuit.
Brown finished second, Fraser third and Watt fifth behind skipper Ian Hutcheon (Monifieth) in the final Order of Merit.
The unlucky ones who have not been selected – there are only seven places in the team – are George Paterson (Northern) who was fourth in the final table and Patrick Tomisson (Nairn) who came sixth. Tomisson finished joint 11th over his home course in the British seniors championship.
Fraser, Watt and Brown oust Gordon MacDonald (Callander), Alan Ferguson (Drumpellier) and Brian Grieve (King James VI) compared with the Scotland team who won the seniors’ home internationals’ title at Dunbar Golf Club 12 months ago.
Compared with the Scotland squad of six who were beaten 3-2 by Ireland in the final of the European senior men’s team championship in Slovenia during the summer, MacDonald and Grieve have been left out.
The team for Caldy GC is:
I C Hutcheon (Monifieth), capt., G Brown (Vale of Leven), S Ellis (Cowal), J Fraser (Royal Burgess), J W Johnston (Royal Aberdeen), D McCart (Castlerock), J Watt (Letham Grange).

PORTIA AND FIONA BOTH IN TOP
TEN AT FRED MARX INVITATIONAL
IN MONROE, LOUISIANA

Two English players finished in the top 10 of the ULM Fred Marx Invitational women’s college tournament at Bayou Desiard Country Club, Monroe in Louisiana.
Portia Abbot from Wiltshire, a third-year student at Jacksonville State University, Alabama tied for sixth place on 228 with scores of 73, 77 and 78 over a par-72, 5,865yd course. In her first American college tournament of the season, a couple of weeks ago, Portia finished fifth.
Fiona Beattie, pictured right, from Axbridge, Somerset, a 22-year-old senior (fourth year) student at Arkansas State Universtity, tied for eighth place on 230 with scores of 76, 77 and 77. It was Fiona’s highest ever finish in an American college tournament.
Perhaps the fact that Arkansas State has a new women’s head golf coach, Chris Adams, had something to do with it.
Arkansas State, thanks to Fiona’s sterling effort, won the team event by five strokes from South Alabama University whose team included junior student Shirley Harvey from Belfast. Shirley had scores of 76, 80 and 79 for joint 29th place on 235.
Swedish student Elin Andersson (South Alabama) was the individual winner with 75, 74 and 72 for five-over-par 221 in awful conditions of wind and rain.

SOLID START BY JODI EWART TO
US COLLEGE SEASON

New Mexico University second-year student Jodi Ewart, playing in her first tournament of the 2007-2008 American college women's golf circuit, shot a one-over-par 74 over her home college course (6.351yd) at Albuquerque.
Jodi, pictured right, who had an outstanding freshman year, was four over par after a double bogey 6 at the 13th, having bogeyed the eighth and 11th, but the Yorkshire girl finished strongly with birdies at the 14th, 16th and 18th to finish the opening day of the 54-hole event alongside former British girls champion Anna Nordqvist (Arizona State) in joint 23rd place on the 74 mark in the Margaret Branch NCAA Preview tournament.
Anna was beaten by Carlota Ciganda in this past summer's British women's open amateur final at Alwoodley, Leeds, not all that far away from Jodi's home club of Catterick.
Another former British girls champion, Belen Mozo (Southern California) is on the 75 mark in a field of 93 players.
Taylor Karle (Pepperdine) has set a hot pace of six-under-par 67 to lead by one shot from Pernilla Lindberg (Oklahoma State) and Dewi-Claire Schreefel (Southern California.

KATY McNICOLL PLANS US COLLEGE
COMEBACK IN FEBRUARY

Carnoustie’s Katy McNicoll, one of Scotland’s best teenage golf prospects, is planning a comeback on the American college circuit in early February.
It will then be almost exactly a year since 19-year-old Katy, pictured right, had a right-knee operation at Boca Raton, Florida where she is now a third-year golf scholarship student at Lynn University.
She has not played golf since then.
Miss McNicoll’s father owns a golf shop in Carnoustie and her older brother Keir is a Scotland amateur international team player who was also a student at Lynn University.
“I tore my anterior cruciate ligament and damaged the menicus on the inside of my right knee. How I managed to do this, I don’t actually know! The knee gave out when I was playing golf in January and the trainer at the university referred me to a specialist who then referred me for an MRI.
“When the results came through, I was told that the only option if I wanted to continue playing competitive golf was to have an operation.”
Katy thought at the time she would be out of action for six months but she was warned that sometimes the anterior cruciate ligament takes fully a year for a 100% recovery. Unfortunately, that has proved the case in this instance.
Katy had already been a winner in 2006 on the American women’s college circuit and was rated a key player in Lynn University’s bid for a national title in the spring.
Last year she was runner-up to Krystle Caithness with a nine-under-par, three-round total in the Scottish Under-21 girls’ stroke-play championship.
In the 2006 Scottish Under-18 girls’ match-play championship, Katy lost to the eventual champion, Roseanne Niven (Crieff) in the semi-finals at Peebles and she also lost in the semi-finals of the North of Scotland women’s championship at Montrose to Michele Thomson (McDonald Ellon) who went on to retain that title.
All of these championships Katy has missed in 2007. Her golfing career is on hold for a year.
In an E-mail from Florida, Katy writes:”I’ve had a meeting with my trainer to determine whether or not I am going to play this fall semester. I looked at all the possibilities and came to the conclusion that rushing to be back at full fitness for the fall isn't in my best interests.
“My knee is close to where it used to be but there is still some healing to be done. Our first tournament in the spring season starts February 8 so I have decided this will be my first competition representing Lynn University.
“It was a hard choice to make but my team have already started competing this fall and they came fourth at the weekend and one of my team-mates actually won the tournament so they are doing OK. I figured this takes the pressure of me to return too early.”

HUTTON SPLASHES HIS WAY
TO A 62 AT LANARK IN
CALLAWAY CHALLENGE

Downfield’s Kenneth Hutton, pictured right, shot one of the low rounds of the Tartan Tour season – and eight-under-par 62 – to lead by four strokes at the halfway stage of the 36-hole Callaway Challenge at Lanark Golf Club today.
Hutton’s brilliant effort was one below the amateur record of 63 set by Callum Macaulay in winning the Newlands Trophy tournament recently but his card does not qualify to be regarded as a new professional course record as preferred lies were in operation.
This followed very heavy rainfall around dawn which delayed the start by half-an-hour while the greenkeeping staff removed what excess water they could from the course.
Hutton, amazingly, managed to return his great score despite being first off the tee and having the greens squeegeed in front of him as he made progress round the course.
His figures were:
OUT: 3 3 4 4 3 4 3 4 3 – 31.
IN: 3 5 3 4 3 5 3 3 2 – 31

Incredible that Hutton could go round in a slow as 62 and still have two bogeys on his scorecard – 5s at the 11th and 15th.
He had birdies at the first, second, fifth, eighth, ninth, 12th, 14th, 16th, 17th and 18th.
Hutton, originally from Muir of Ord, won three pro-ams – Scotscraig, Eastwood and Nairn Dunbar – last year but has not won any this year.
His closest challengers with one round to go are Derek McIntosh (Eldereslie) and Gordon Law (Uphall), both on four-under 66. McIntosh bogeyed three of the last four holes in an inward 34 while the last of Law’s five birdies came at the 10th before he parred the last eight holes for 33 home.
Former European Tour leading light Ronan Rafferty, playing out of Doonbeg, did not find it quite so easy as the leaders. The Irishman’s round of 76 included a double bogey 6 at the fourth, a double bogey 7 at the eighth and a triple bogey7 at the 14th.

COUNTY TEAM MISS OUT
It was another close run thing for the Wee County Golf team at Rothesay on Sunday. In the final match of the Scottish Golf Union’s area team championship qualifying, the six-man team missed out by a single point, leaving Argyll and Bute victorious over their home ground.
In the morning foursomes, the County pairing of Ross Benvie and Darren Hulston proved unstoppable in their match with the top Argyll and Bute pair, and were an estimated six under par for the outing.
The two other pairs could not match the locals with golfing skills - the final pair falling victim to the often repeated golf adage “ two up with five to play never wins.” And so the County trailed 2-1 at lunchtime, leaving them a difficult task in the singles. For a time it all looked very hopeful, but in the end, there were only three County winners, meaning a halved singles result and overall victory for Argyll and Bute.
The outstanding performance of the day was undoubtedly Braehead’s Ross Benvie who turned in another classy display against the Rothesay club champion Graham Bolton. Ross went quickly ahead by two holes and never allowed Graham back in the game. A closing birdie at the 15th finished the match.
Tulliallan’s John Maxwell continued the good work. Again an early two-hole lead proved decisive and another strong finish put another point on the board. The final singles win came from the “senior “ County team player Mike Rust who proved that he could still produce good golf when required.
Square at the 12th, he reeled off three birdies, and closed out his opponent with a par 5 at the 16th. The three remaining County players found the locals too strong over the scenic Canada Hill course, and the match tipped in favour of Argyll and Bute.
Details:

Foursomes (1-2).

The team can now only look forward to the 2008 event where they have been drawn against Ayrshire (at home) and incredibly the other two teams in the Group are the same as this year - Argyll and Bute (away) and North-east (home)

TULLIALLAN IN THE HUNT FOR TOP TEAM
The Scottish Golf Union Club Championship reaches the final stages and Tulliallan will be hoping to emulate their successes of 1999 and 2002. Playing for Tulliallan will be Steven Horne, Mark Crichton and Gordon Lyons.

Mark featured in both the wins, and will be hoping for a hat-trick while Steven featured in the 1999 event. The winning club out of the field of 16 competing will go forward to the European Final later in the year.

THREE 2s FOR CALLUM
In his debut for the Scottish Home International team, Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan) turned in a very respectable performance - he played in all the matches recording two wins, two halved matches, and two losses.

These matches are great tests of playing golf under pressure conditions, and Callum can be well pleased with his contribution (which incidentally attracted attention from the Walker Cup selectors) to the Scottish team, which regrettably finished in third place behind Ireland and England.
The opening match was against Ireland and Macaulay was paired with the 2006 Scottish champion Kevin McAlpine in the foursomes match which they one narrowly by one hole. In his singles match, Macaulay lost to Cian Curley at the 17th after a seesaw match. Scotland halved with Ireland in the match.
The next match was against Wales, and Callum improved with a half in the foursomes playing with Gavin Dear (Murrayshall), following that with a win against Adam Runcie. Two down after four holes, Callum fought back to take the match on the 17th green, and Scotland took the match 8-7.
The final day was a showdown between Scotland and England for the 2007 title. Playing again with Gavin Dear, they scored a vital halved match in the morning, but the afternoon singles went England’s way, Callum falling to young Ben Parker by 2 and 1.

By beating Scotland 9-6, England were crowned champions for 2007.
In the World Amateur Golf Rankings, Callum has improved by one position, while his nearest rival has dropped by one place. He is therefore still on target to take the Scottish Golfer of the year for 2007.

HEATHER WINS CLASSIC VETS FINAL
AGAINST CHRISTINE AT BLAIRGOWRIE

Northern champion Heather Anderson (Downfield) is the new Scottish Veteran Ladies Golf Association champion. In the tightest of finals over the Blairgowrie Rosemount course today, Heather beat Christine McAndrew (Nairn Dunbar), the Highland veteran women's title-holder, by one hole.
Heather, pictured right, was never in arrears but, at the same time, she was never more than a hole up. Christine got a birdie 2 at the ninth to square the contest but Heather regained her lead at the next hole.
Christine drew level again with a concession at the 13th. Heather went ahead for the last time at the 16th before two halves ended a enthralling contest.

Semi-finals - H Anderson (Northern) bt J Brydson (Galloway) 2 holes, C McAndrew (Highland) bt H Faulds (West) 2 and 1.
Final - Anderson bt McAndrew 1 hole.

HOLLY AITCHISON WINS LIPHOOK SCRATCH
CUP WITH TOURNAMENT RECORD LOW

Holly Aitchison, 20-year-old member at The Bedfordshire Golf Club, followed up her wins in the Portuguese women's open amateur championship and, more recently, the St Andrews Junior Leadies Open, with victory in the 16th Liphook Scratch Cup, hosted by Liphook Golf Club in Hampshire.
A top class field of 57 took to the course in perfect playing conditions – a windless, warm day on the Hampshire/Sussex border.
Last minute withdrawals, including the holder, Henni Brockway, with a bad back, and some of the Hampshire county team suffering from their battle with Yorkshire at the county finals at Brokenhurst during the week, did not diminish the very high standard of play and excellent scoring.
Charlie Douglass set the early pace with a morning round of 66. But it was Holly Aitchison who put together two sub-70 rounds, coming in with an event record score of 134. Her afternoon round of 65 equalled the ladies’ course record set by Henni Brockway last year.

ENGLAND WHIPS SCOTS IN UNDER-16
INTERNATIONAL AT PRESTWICK

England followed up their 9-6 win over Scotland in the men’s home internationals on Friday with an emphatic 12-3 win in the Under-16 boys’ match, hosted by Prestwick St Nicholas Golf Club on Sunday.
“It was a disappointing way to end the season,” SGU junior coach Spencer Henderson told the SGU website.
The young Scots had scored a good win over North of England Under-16s the previous weekend and 12 months ago had scored their first win over England at this level.
The foursomes were tight and ended in a narrow 3-2 win for England, giving no hint of the afternoon landslide to come in the singles.
England took the one-on-one ties by a 9-1 margin.
Scotland’s only singles winner was Tom Blennerhasset (Dalmahoy), although, in fairness, it has to be said that three of the ties went to the 18th green.

TAIWANESE PLAYER (18) HEADS 31 QUALIFIERS FOR
LPGA TOUR SCHOOL AT DAYTONA BEACH

FROM THE LPGA TOUR WEBSITE:
Yani Tseng of Taiwan tops the list of 31 golfers who are one step closer to a spot on the 2008 LPGA Tour. Tseng shot an even-par 72 in the final round of the LPGA Sectional Qualifying Tournament at Mission Hills Country Club, Rancho Mirage, California on Saturday.
She edged four players – Amie Cochran of California, Annie Young of Utah, Ashleigh Simon of South Africa and Anna Rawson of Australia – to take medalist (leading qualifier) honours at three-under-par (72-68-73-72=285).
Tseng, one of three players from Taiwan in the field, was tied for the lead after two rounds, but trailed by one-stroke entering Saturday's final round. She began the day with bogeys on holes 2, 5 and 8 and a birdie on 7 to make the turn at two-over-par for the day. Tseng rebounded with birdies on holes 10 and 11 before making bogey on hole 16.
She ended the tournament with a birdie on hole 18 to finish at even-par 72 for the day and three-under-par 285 for the week.
“I'm very happy because I made a good putt on the last hole,” said Tseng following the tournament. “Today, the first nine, I didn't do a good job. I was really disappointed, but the back nine I played real good.”
This marks Tseng's first appearance at the LPGA Final Qualifying School, though she recently tested herself on the LPGA Tour. The 18-year-old finished tied for sixth at the CN Canadian Women's Open in August. She fired four rounds of even-par or better including two 67's to finish tied with Kimberly Hall and 2006 Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year Seon Hwa Lee.
“I don't think I will play any tournaments before LPGA Final Qualifying School,” said Tseng. “I will play the Futures Tour Q-School and practice and take a rest.”
Amie Cochran of California tops the list of four players tied for second place at one-under-par (67-80-70-70=287). Cochran tied the low-round of the tournament with a 5-under-par 67 in the first round to take the early lead.
A second round 80 dropped her to a tie for 22nd place, but she recovered with back-to-back rounds of 2-under-par 70 to earn her ticket to Daytona Beach.
“The main goal coming out here was just to move on to the next stage,” said Cochran. “A lot of the girls out here are really competitive so of course we're all gunning to win.”
Duramed Futures Tour alum Annie Young fired a final round 2-under-par 70 to tie for second place at one-under par (72-70-75-70=287).
Young, who was named the 2005 Big 12 Player of the Year at Oklahoma State University, used four birdies and two bogies to advance.
“I hit the ball better and scored really well, especially in this wind,” said Young. “(I have to) get my body in shape and get ready for the grind coming up.”
South African Ashleigh Simon shot two-over-par 74 in the final round to join a tie for second place. Simon, who turned professional in May of 2007, has played in 19 tournaments on the Ladies European Tour since 2006. Her first career victory came in Spain at the Catalonia Ladies Masters this June. Simon also played two events on the LPGA Tour in 2007, including a sponsor exemption at the HSBC Women's World Match Play Championship.
“I didn't play as well as the last two days, but I just had to get the job done out there,” said Simon. “I'm going to practise hard because it will be a hard grueling week (in Daytona). I have to get ready for that.”
Australian Anna Rawson finished in a tie for second after a final round of 75 that featured two birdies and five bogies. The native Australian played 17 events on the Duramed Futures Tour in 2005 before moving to the Ladies European Tour, where she was a fixture in 2006 and 2007.
“It's nice to get it done here in Palm Springs,” said Rawson. “It's very exciting. Good to be in the top-3. That gives me confidence heading into Daytona.”
England's Kiran Matharu and Samantha Head, well enough placed to make the top 30 and ties after three rounds, let their chance slip through their fingers on the final day. Samantha had her worst round of the week, a five-over 77, for 297 - three shots too many to qualify.
Kiran also slumped to her worst of the tournament, a 79, for 298.
The Rancho Mirage qualifier is the first of the LPGA Tour's two sectional qualifying events in 2007. The second LPGA Tour Sectional Qualifying Tournament is Oct. 2-5 at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla.
The top-30 finishers and ties from the Florida qualifier will join the California sectional qualifiers, current LPGA Tour members attempting to improve their status and the players who finished sixth through 15th on the final 2007 Duramed Futures Tour money list at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., Nov. 28-Dec. 2.

PUTTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT

LYNN KENNY WAS JOINT TOP SCOT
- AND IT WAS A TIE FOR FIFTH
PLACE NOT SIXTH

Lynn Kenny is a bit miffed this Sunday morning despite her fine performance to finish joint top Scot in a tie for fifth place in the De Vere Ladies Scottish Open on Saturday.

Lynn's E-mail to Kirkwoodgolf:

"Just read the LET website and the papers this morning and was sooo disappointed to see that I haven't got a mention as JOINT TOP SCOT alongside Janice - and we were fifth, my best finish to date.
"My sponsors (Archerfield Links) will read that and will be none the wiser unless they look at the actual scores on the live scoring! Gutted!
"Oh well, I guess in the grand scheme of things it's not important. The fact that I have all but secured my card for next year is the BIG picture - yeeehaa!
"Many thanks for your support, I'll go out and win next week."
Lynn Kenny
