GILLIAN STEWART CADDIES FOR
FIRST TIME - AND HELPS SPANIARD
FINISH THIRD IN 'BRITISH'

By COLIN FARQUHARSON

A regular championship winner as an amateur golfer and again as a Ladies European Tour player, you might think there cannot be many golf situations that would be a new experience for Inverness-based coach Gillian Stewart.
But you would be wrong!
When Gillian recently became “bag lady” for Spain’s Miguel Preysler, pictured right, one of the top men on the European senior amateurs’ scene, at the British senior amateur championship at Nairn and Nairn Dunbar, it was the first time in her life she had ever caddied.
Miguel, winner of the European seniors’ title last year and third in the 2007 event, finished a close third on the final day at Nairn.
He had rounds of 70, 70 and 72 for a four-under-par total of 212, one shot behind Irishman Arthur Pierse who beat Canadian Graham Cook in a play-off for the prestigious title.
“I putted like a dream, thanks to Gillian. I never thought I would become a better player at my age but Gillian has worked wonders for my short game. I am seriously thinking of putting her in touch with my friend and compatriot Sergio Garcia,” said Miguel.
“If Gillian had had a chance to work on Sergio’s game, he would have won the Open at Carnoustie – and I am not joking.”
So how did Gillian Stewart and Miguel Preysler who is related through marriage to the singer Julio Inglesias ever come to meet in the first place?
Gillian (pictured left) takes up the story:
“I first met Miguel in 1980 when playing in a pro-am at Sotogrande. He was the general manager of the Sotogrande resort at the time. We became friends and over the years since then I have spent some time most winters down in Sotogrande, working on my golf game.
“I represented the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande on the Ladies European Tour when I played full time. Miguel and his wife Amparo left Spain in the mid-1980s for a period to work in the States but returned when the opportunity arose to invest in a real estate company back in Sotogrande.
“So I have known Miguel and for the best part of 30 years. In recent years, as I have become more involved in coaching I have spent more time helping him with his golf when I have been in Sotogrande.
“He is very easy to coach as he is such a talented player and picks things up quickly.
We got his putting sorted out very simply. He was failing to release the putter head through the ball. Once he understood what 'releasing' meant, he started hitting the ball on its intended line, the strike became pure and so he was able to roll the ball consistently on the greens.
“In the first two rounds of the British seniors championship, he had 25 putts and in the last round 30 putts. It was the best display of 'live' putting I have ever seen. His chipping and pitching needed a bit of attention, so we worked a bit on that and I gave him a swing thought for his long game which he liked.
FAMILIAR FEELINGS
“I had never caddied for anyone before so it was a new experience. However I found that the rituals and I went through were just as if I were actually playing. The preparation, the focus and the feelings of excitement of being in contention were quite familiar. I felt my role was to take as much weight off my player as possible and make things as easy as possible for him.
“Links golf gives you options at each hole and a big part of the battle is deciding how to play the hole. So you need to make a strategic decision and get it right before you've even swung a club.
“Those of us who live in the North of Scotland know that you rarely get two days the same, so each day on each hole a decision has to be made, lines and clubs varying with the conditions. This is part of what makes links golf so mentally demanding. It is a form of golf with which Miguel is not familiar so I feel I was able to help him in this area. “With all the rain we have had this summer the courses are not nearly as fast running as usual but still there were decisions to be made on how far he wanted to pitch the ball and judging how much release there might be after. For someone used to playing target golf this is quite an adjustment.
“Mentally Miguel is very strong so with specific instruction prior to playing each shot he was able to focus completely on the task at hand and execute the shot. It was a pleasure caddying for him, exciting too, or as the Spanish would pronounce it - 'citing!' . Despite accumulating seven penalty shots in three rounds he finished just one shot behind."
TESTIMONIAL
Miguel Preysler was kind enough to contribute the following testimonial to Gillian Stewart's website http://www.gillianstewart.com/ last year :
“If anyone wants to find a wealth of information about golf, speak to Gill. As a golf instructor, she is extremely careful and precise in only saying what she needs to say in order to keep it simple. As a successful touring pro, her knowledge of the mental side and the execution of a wide variety of shots, is an aspect she has helped me with tremendously.
"A few weeks after my last lesson with her in May, I went from having major problems with my pitching to winning on three successive weeks the Spanish National Seniors, the International European Seniors and the International Andalucian Seniors. If that is not great teaching, I do not know what is!!”

VIKKI 75 IN HUNTERS OAK CLASSIC AS
NATASHA LEADS GB&I COMPETITORS

Vikki Laing from Musselburgh had a three-over-par 75 in the opening round of the US Futures Tour event, the Hunters Oak Classic, at Queenstown, Maryland.
Over a 6,339yd, par-72 (36-36) links-type course, Vikki had halves of 37 and 38 to be lying joint 73rd and a bit too close to the 36-hole cut-off point for comfort.
South Wales amateur Natasha Morgan, pictured right, spending her summer holidays from Lynn University, Boca Raton in Florida, playing American's No 2 female professional tour, was in joint 20th place after a par-matching 72 (38-34).
Natasha, who will be 21 in October, comes from Monmouthshire. She is going into her senior year at Lynn University and has picked up valuable tournament experience on the Futures Tour.
Polly Willett from London had a 73 (37-36) to be sharing 29th place.
Brenda McLarnon from Belfast was joint 50th with a 74 (38-36).
Leading the field on five-under-par 67 (35-32) was Mollie Fankhauser from Columbus, Ohio.
Next best were Sarah Martin from Michigan (35-34) and Yoora Kim (South Korea) (35-34) on 69.

TOUGH ON KELSEY: TRIP TO HOUSTON MADE
HER UNAVAILABLE FOR NORTH BERWICK

Tough luck on Kelsey MacDonald that she was unavailable for selection to the LGU Junior Team for the October training match against the Vagliano Trophy squad at North Berwick. Scroll down to read the Ladies Golf Union Press Release.
The Nairn Dunbar teenager is already committed to going to Texas in October - at the time of the North Berwick three-day match - as a member of the Grampian Houston Junior Trip.
This trip happens only every two years and sends a dozen North and North-east boys and girls to Texas to play the great courses in the Houston area, get some coaching from Major winner Steve Elkington and go through their paces for some United States college golf coaches.
Clubs in the North and North-east are asked every two years to nominate a boy or girl from their club whom, they feel, would benefit most from such a trip.
A selection committee then interviews the nominees and decides which 12 will go on the 10-day all expenses paid trip.
So, although Kelsey would certainly have liked to play for what is in effect a Great Britain & Ireland girls team, she will realise that the Grampian Houston Junior Trip will give her memories of a life-time.
Other talented Scots youngsters who would almost certainly been selected for the North Berwick match were Krystle Caithness (St Regulus) and Roseanne Niven (Crieff) but they will be at college in the United States by mid-October.

GOLD AND SILVER
MEDALS FOR
DANIELLE McVEIGH

Northern Ireland 19-year-old six-footer Danielle McVeigh is walking even taller now – today (Friday) she won the women’s gold medal in the World Student Games’ golf championship at Watermill Golf and Gardens Resort in Thailand.
Danielle, from Kilkeel, Co Down, a student at Texas A&M University, had rounds of 72, 75, 69 and 76 for a four-over-par total of 292, beating the international field by four strokes with an excellent score in soaring temperatures and strength-sapping humidity.
Danielle, pictured above, playing for Ireland in the women’s team competition, just missed out on a gold medal double whammy. Niamh Kitching, Gillian O’Leary and Danielle, front-runners over the first three rounds, weakened on the final day and were pipped by Mexico by a single shot for first place.
So it was team gold to Ireland’s women with United States (603) third. Great Britain (Anna Scott, Hannah Burke and Scot Emma Fairnie) faded out of contention for a medal of any description on the last day. They finished fifth on 609.
Anna Scott (300) came fifth in the individual women’s event with Hannah Burke (310) 13th. Emma Fairnie did not play in the first round so did not have a final total but her last round of 77 was a scoring round for Britain under the best two from three format.
England international Charles Ford won a silver in the men’s individual golf championship with scores of 71, 75, 69 and 71 for two-under-par 286, the same score as a Japanese player.
Ming-chuan Chen (Taipei) took the golf with 70, 70, 74 and 67 for seven-under-par 281.
Gavin Dear and Scott Borrowman of Stirling University finished joint 28th and 41st respectively in the field of 85. Dear had a total of 297 with scores of 73, 75, 74 and 75 for nine-over-par 297.
Scottish youths champion Borrowman scored 81, 75, 70 and 78 for 304.
The fourth member of the British men’s team, Englishman Tom Sherreard, totalled 298.
Thailand (863), Mexico (864) and Japan (866) took the team medals. Britain finished fifth on 877.
QUOTE FROM DANIELLE McVEIGH:
“Initially we were fairly disappointed about missing out on the team gold by just one shot after leading this morning — and that was all I could think about. It was only a little later when I had time to reflect that it sank in that I had actually won,” remarked Danielle.
“It’s a huge achievement for all of us to do what we’ve done here this week. The disappointment we felt about losing gold only reflects our level of ambition, so that’s a good thing. A medal was my goal coming out here so to achieve a gold is fantastic; it means an awful lot to me,” she concluded.

KELLY v HENRIETTA IN ALL-ENGLAND BRITISH
GIRLS' CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL IN SOUTH WALES

Manchester's Kelly Tidy meets Yeovil’s Henrietta Brockway in this afternoon’s all-England final of the British girls’ championship at Southerndown, Wales.
Kelly, 15, and an England girl international, beat 12-year-old Irish twin Lisa Maguire 5 and 4 in their semi-final.
ELGA’s national junior coach Pat Smillie said: “Kelly played very steady, percentage golf. She was very consistent and had birdies on the sixth and 10th."

Additional information from other sources:

Kelly, the 18th qualifier took command of the proceedings against her young opponent, who qualified in 43rd position, after losing the first hole. She then won the third, fifth, sixth and seventh to be three up at the turn. Kelly then clinched victory by winning the 10th and 11th to go five up.
"Though disappointed to lose this morning, I am delighted with how I played this week” uttered an exhausted Maguire after seven grueling rounds of intense competition.
“My ball striking and putting were just so solid all week that I hope I can be even better at next year’s championship at Monifieth near Padraig’s Carnoustie” she added with an Irish smile
Henrietta Brockway, the No 24 qualifier who knocked out first European Young Masters girls champion Carly Booth (Comrie) and then the No 1 seed Sally Watson (Elie & Earlsferry) to reach the semi-finals, beat the No 5 seed Sara Monberg (Denmark) in the other semi-final this morning.
The first seven holes were halved before Sara won the eighth but Henrietta hit back by squaring the match at the ninth and then going into a three-hole lead by winning the 11th, 12th and 15th.

CLAIRE AITKEN WINS
ENGLISH WOMEN'S
MID-AMATEUR FINAL

Claire Aitken won the ladies’ English women's open mid-amateur championship at Sherwood Forest Golf Club, Nottinghamshire, where she beat Jenny Pease of Essex 3 and 2 in a low-scoring final.
“This is so important to me,” said Claire, 21, from The London Club, Kent (pictured right).
“It’s always been my goal to win a national championship.”
Her success caps a fine season in which she has already won four prestigious scratch tournaments.
Claire claimed her English title despite lacking full confidence in her game. “I’ve been struggling and I had a lesson just before I came here which helped.
“I didn’t feel 100 per cent confident in my swing but I tried not to think about. I tried to grip it as I’ve been taught and hit it.”
Claire’s play looked extremely confident. She was three-under par at the end of the final in which birdies and an eagle were traded between the two players. Claire had four birdies on the outward half, on the fourth, fifth, sixth and ninth.
Jenny, the Essex champion from Braintree, had an eagle 3 on the fifth and birdied the eighth.
The players halved the first hole before Claire won the second to go ahead – and was never to fall behind. Over the front nine her lead fluctuated between one and two-up before Jenny – who demonstrated a sharp short game - pulled her back to all-square after the short 10th.
Claire’s response was to come straight back and win the next two holes. Jenny tussled with the rough on the 11th and bunkers on the 12th. They halved the next three holes, sharing the short 15th in birdie 2s.
The par-5 16th proved to be the decider: Jenny found two fairway bunkers before reaching the green in four shots, while Claire was on in a regulation three after playing a delicate pitch over a bunker. Jenny made a bold attempt for her par and then conceded Claire’s putt.
Claire, who took up golf about 10 years ago and now has a handicap of plus-two, is enjoying her best-ever season of golf. So far this year she has won the Hampshire Rose, the Roehampton Gold Cup, the Crichley Salver and the Frilford Heath Scratch Salver. Her next target is the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship which starts at Conwy, Wales, next Wednesday.

SCOTS ARE UP AGAINST IT IN WALES LADIES
CHAMPIONSHIP OF EUROPE

Lynn Kenny, Clare Queen and Kathryn Imrie are up against it in the Wales Ladies Championship of Europe at the Machynys Peninsula Golf Club in West Wales.
All three Scots had first-round scores of five-over-par 77 and are joint 84th in the standings, which means they need a drasic improvement on Friday if they are to survive the 36-hole cut.
Clare had double bogeys at the 13th and 17th in an inward half of 40.
Heather MacRae (Dunblane), still an amateur but playing on an invitation as winner of the Welsh women's open amateur stroke-play title earlier this season, had a 78.
Scandinavians, and in particular, Danes, have taken over at the top of the leaderboard.
Lisa Holm Sorensen (Dnmark) leads with a six-under-ar 66.
Compatriot Amanda Moltke-Leth is second on 68 while Iben Tinning (Denmark) and Johanna Westerberg (Sweden) are sharing third place on 69.
On 70, there's Kirsty S Taylor, Gladwys Nocera (France), Joanne Mills (Australia) and Rebecca Hudson.
Inverness-based Kiwi Liz McKinnon is sharing 54th place on 75.

CLAIRE AITKEN v JENNY PEASE FOR
ENGLISH MID-AMATEUR OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

Kent’s Claire Aitken will meet Jenny Pease of Essex in the final of the English women's open mid-amateur championship at Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire.
Claire, 21, won her place when she defeated Sian James of Bristol & Clifton 3 and 2 in their semi-final. Jenny, also 21, beat Becky Dowell (Enmore Park) 2 and 1.
It will be a first national final for both players and their reaction was similar. “I’m excited – and a little bit nervous,” said Jenny, who plays at Braintree and is the Essex champion.
“I’m excited – and looking forward to it,” said Claire, who has already won four prestigious scratch titles this season. She had the upper hand throughout her semi-final but Sian, who struggled with her driving, kept coming back thanks to some fine putting.
However, Claire (The London) played steadily and never gave up her advantage. She was two up at the turn, lost the 10th, but went back to two up after 14. She claimed her place in the final when she won the 16th with a par.
Earlier in the day Claire, who works at a driving range, beat Nottinghamshire champion Emma Sheffield by one hole in their quarter final.
Jenny Pease won the first hole of her semi-final and was never to fall behind. She appeared to be cruising to victory when she won the eighth, ninth, 10th and 11th , with two birdies and two pars, to go to four up. But Becky Dowell staged a spirited fightback with wins on the 12th and 15th.
“Becky came back at me but I holed two good putts on the last two greens for halves,” said Jenny, who works in a pro shop.
Jenny has played golf since she was 11 but took up the game seriously only about three years ago when injury forced her to give up hockey. She played both for Essex and the East of England and had hoped for an international career.
She reached the semi-final by winning an all-Essex tie against Fiona Smith of Chelmsford.

SALLY WATSON, SCOTLAND'S LAST
HOPE, LOSES IN BRITISH
GIRLS' QUARTER-FINALS

Scotland’s last survivor, Sally Watson was beaten by one hole by England’s Henrietta Brockway, pictured right, from Yeovil in the quarter-finals of the British girls open amateur golf championship at Southerndown Golf Club, South Wales today.
Sixteen-year-old Sally from South Queensferry, beaten in the final last year, was favourite to take the title after winning the Todd Bowl for being the leading qualifier for the match-play stages.
In the morning quarter-finals, Sally beat the last Spaniard in the champions, Ana Urchegui, by one hole to reach the last eight for the second year in a row.
Miss Brockway beat European Young Masters' girls champion Carly Booth (Comrie) by 4 and 2 in the round of the last 16.
The other Scots to fall in the third round were Roseanne Niven (Crieff) and the No 2 seed, Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar).
Roseanne was beaten 2 and 1 by Charlie Douglass (Brocket Hall).
Miss MacDonald went down by 5 and 4 to Kelly Tidy from Manchester.
In Friday morning’s semi-finals, 12-year-old Irish twin Lisa Maguire from Slieve Russell Golf Club, Co Cavan, will play Kelly Tidy (Manchester) while Henrietta Brockway will play Sara Monberg from Denmark.
Lisa had a tremendous win in the third round over Florentyna Parker (Royal Birkdale) who was first reserve for the Great Britain & Ireland women's team for the recent Vagliano Trophy match at Fairmont St Andrews.
Lisa’s twin sister, Leona, won the Scottish Under-16 girls’ open stroke-play championship early in the season
PRESS RELEASE FROM THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Twelve year old Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell) beat England's Florentyna Parker, first reserve on last month's Vagliano team, and then Laura Gonzalez-Escallon (Belgium) to progress to the semi-finals of the 2007 Girls British Amateur Championship at Southerndown.
Maguire, the first Irish player ever to make the last four of this championship, won the first, fourth and ninth to turn two up in her quarter-final encounter with Laura Gonzalez-Escallon and then won three of the last four holes to close out the match on the 15th green.
Earlier in the day, Maguire was in devastating form to bridie three holes on the outward stretch to hold a two hole advantage at the turn. Despite a late rally by Parker, Maguire's nerve held strong and she holed two testers from fifteen feet to close out the vastly more experienced English International on the 17th green.
Lisa Maguire now meets England's Kelly Tidy who, like Maguire, represented her country at the Girls Home Internationals at Southerndown last week.
Whatever the outcome for the twelve year old twin, well accustomed to boxing above her weight, she will be the first Irish player to take part in the semi-finals of the British Girls Amateur Championship – an admirable feat in itself. Results:

Scotland’s Sally Watson set out against Henrietta Brockway (England) in the first quarter-final match of the afternoon. Off to a flying start, Watson won the first three holes. However, she lost her rhythmm in the windy conditions and missed a six footer on nine which would have taken her to four up.
A couple of bad drives and missed greens later against steady performances from Brockway, she was back to all square. An out of bounds second shot on 18 closed the match and the point went to Brockway.
When asked about the match Watson said “I have done what I came to do this week which was to win the stroke-play stage, I have played seven weeks of back to back competition and am extremely match tired, didn't expect to win....Henrietta is a great player and she played steady all day.”
Twelve-year-old Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell) stormed into the semi-fnals, only the second time she will have been in this position (lost on 18th hole at the Irish Ladies Close Championship). The Irish twin, who had a remarkable match against Florentyna Parker (Royal Birkdale), an experienced English International player, this morning, was always up in the match against Belguim’s Laura Gonzalez-Escallo.
After nine holes Maguire was two up and went onto to birdie the 13th, and ended up with three putts to win on the 15th, culminating in a match result of 5 and 3.
Sara Monberg (Denmark), who enjoyed a 5 & 4 victory over Josephine Jansone in the third round, took on Germany’s Saskia Hausladen. A very close match for the first nine holes, then Monberg took charge from the turn and remained in front and won 2 and 1.
In an all-English quarterfinal, the 2006 English Under-15s champion, Kelly Tidy beat Charlie Douglass 4 and 3, the 2006 runner-up in the English girls’ championship.

NO SCOTS LEFT AT SHERWOOD FOREST IN
ENGLISH WOMEN'S OPEN MID-AMATEUR

Kylie Walker, the only surviving Scot, was beaten by two holes by Fiona Smith (Chelmsford) in the second round of the English women's open mid-amateur golf championship at Sherwood Forest Golf Club today.
The Buchanan Castle player, the third best qualifier for the match-play stages, had earlier beaten Anglo-Scot Edwina Lowery Gold (Eaton, Norwich) 4 and 3.
Claire Hargan (Mortonhall) lost in the first round by 2 and 1 to the No 2 seed and 1987 British women's amateur title-winner Janet Collingham (Sherwood Forest).
Claire MacDonald (Gullane Ladies) also went out in the first round by one hole to Corisande Lee (West Lancs).
Heavy rain caused a suspension of play, which meant that two of the second-round ties went on into the evening.
Through to the last eight are:
(seedings in brackets)
(1) Emma Sheffield (Newark).
(9) Claire Aitken (London).
(5) Sian James (Bristol & Clifton).
(4) Bronwyn Mullins-Lane (Australia).
(7) Becky Dowell (Enmore).
(11) Jenny Pease (Braintree)
(15) Corisande Lee (West Lancs).

Lyndsey Hewison, the ELGA Press Officer, writes:

A lightning storm and torrential rain disrupted play in the first match-play round at Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire.
Cars and buggies went out to bring in the players as the storm swept over and left the course awash. At the time, only four of the morning matches had been completed.
Knowle’s Jo Hodge was on the 11th when the storm broke and she said: “It was pretty scarey when the thunder and lightning was going – and that was followed by torrential rain.”
After a suspension of two hours, play resumed at about 3pm and the final match of the day ended after 8.30pm, when West Lancashire’s Corisande Lee defeated local player and 1987 British champion, Janet Collingham (Sherwood Forest) 2 and 1.
ELGA tournament secretary Emma Lowe remarked: “I have never seen so much rain come down in such a short time. Within about two minutes the practice putting green was under water. But the fairways drained quite quickly and the greenstaff have been excellent at sorting everything out.”
At the end of the day, top seed Emma Sheffield had battled her way through to the quarter finals. Emma, the Nottinghamshire champion from Newark, had a comfortable first round win but was then taken to the 20th by West Surrey’s Emma Lyons. Now she will play Claire Aitken (The London).
Sian James (Bristol & Clifton) had an impressive 7 and 5 win over 2006 English girls’ champion Rachel Jennings (Izaak Walton). Her quarter-final opponent is the Australian, Bronwyn Mullins-Lane (Harefield Place).
Braintree’s Jenny Pease ended the reign of defending champion Charlotte Ellis (Minchinhampton) in the first round. Jenny went on to beat Julia Brook (Croham Hurst) and now meets Essex colleague Fiona Smith (Chelmsford).
In the other quarter-final, Corisande Lee will play Becky Dowell (Enmore Park) who chipped in twice during her second round victory over Jo Hodge.

GIRLS' LEADERBOARD AT STUDENT GAMES

The Irish team of Niamh Kitching (Claremorris), Danielle McVeigh (Royal Co. Down) and Gillian O’Leary (Cork) have stolen a march on their competitors and drawn level with Great Britain for the lead in the girls' category at the halfway point of the World University Games' golf programme in Bangkok, Thailand.
McVeigh carded a steady three over par 75 to take the individual lead of three shots from Anna Scott of Great Britain. Scott dropped seven shots today for her 79 to fall back to six over par for the tournament.
McVeigh was characteristically cool about her lead: “We’re only halfway but I got around steady today. I couldn’t really tell you what I did on the front nine or the back nine for that matter. I just go out and play golf, play as well as I can and add the scores up at the end of the day. I have to give more of the same tomorrow.”
UL PE student Niamh Kitching performed much better today also carding a 75; a consistent round from the Claremorris native with two birdies and five bogies seeing her one over par for the front nine and two over for the back nine.
Gillian O’Leary, who is studying food science in UCC, has yet to ignite under the searing sun, signing for an 85. All three take to the course in the hottest part of the day tomorrow around midday which is sure to add to the test that Watermill presents but all three are excited about maintaining their position at the top of the team leader board.
As for McVeigh, the individual gold medal is within reach.

Another great day for Scotland at Southerndown

SALLY AND KELSEY HEAD
BRITISH GIRLS' QUALIFIERS,
SCOTS TAKE TEAM TITLE

Following last week's repeat triumph in the girls' home internationals over the same course, it was another great day for the Scots in the second qualifying round of the British girls' open amateur golf championship at Southerndown Golf Club, South Wales today.
South Queensferry 16-year-old Sally Watson (Elie & Earlsferry Ladies), who made it to the final 12 months ago, led the 64 qualifiers into the match-play stages with two par-matching rounds of 72 for 144.
And the No 2 seed in the draw is 16-year-old Kelsey MacDonald from Nairn Dunbar. She scored 75 and 70 - four birdies on the way home - for 145.
Three other Scots also qualified - Roseanne Niven (Crieff) with a 75 for 148, Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) with a 78 for 151, and Carly Booth from Comrie also survived with a 77 for 157.
Roseanne had a triple bogey 7 at the 11th but came storming back with birdies at the 12th, 13th, 15th and 18th.
Carly, 15, improved by three shots on her opening effort but she is still not on song. She had back to back birdies from the 12th to the 14th but eight bogeys either side of that purple patch. She was only one stroke away from figuring in the play-off on 158 for the last few of the 64 places in the match-play draw.
But Carly did help to win a trophy for Scotland - the team award, staged in conjunction with the qualifying rounds. The Scots whose scores counted were Carly Booth, Kelsey MacDonald and Roseanne Niven with a total score of 450.
Denmark (Sara Monberg, Charlotte Lorentzen and Daisy Nielson) gained second place with a total of 456 and a better second round total of 226 than Belgium who also scored 456.
The Belgian team members were Valentine Gevers, Manon Vanmol and Laura Gonzalez - Escallon.

K CLUB AND CO. ARMAGH THROUGH TO SEMI-FINALS
OF IRELAND'S INTER-CLUB FOUR-BALL

The K Club and Co. Armagh are through to the All-Ireland semi-finals of the Miele Ireland Ladies Interclub Four-ball following victories over Dublin City and Letterkenny in the East and North Regional Finals held at Slieve Russell, Co Cavan today.
Having failed in last year’s Eastern Regional Final, the K Club had to dig deep to overcome a strong Dublin City side who were making their first appearance in the latter stages of the competition.
Dublin City started brightly and held the advantage over the outward stretch but The K Club’s vast experience at this level told and eventually closed out the encounter 3-1.
Meanwhile in the Northern Regional Final, Co Armagh came from behind in three of their four ties to squeeze out a desperately unlucky Letterkenny team.
The Donegal side rallied strongly over the opening holes but Co. Armagh weathered the inclement drizzle the better and emerged victoirios by a 3-1 margin.
Both sides now join the winners of the South and West Regional Finals at the All-Ireland Semi-Finals at Mount Juliet on Saturday 15th September with the All-Ireland Final taking place the following day.
Results:
Regional Finals

British girls championship starts at Southerndown

C ARLY (80) jt 80th - ONLY 64 QUALIFY
AFTER 2nd QUALIFYING ROUND
European Young Masters' champion Carly Booth from Comrie suffered an unexpected form slump in the first qualifying round of the British girls' open amateur championship at Southerndown Golf Club, South Wales today.
Only the leading 64 players in a capacity field of 144 at the end of Tuesday's second round will go forward to the match-play stages.
At the start of Tuesday's second round, 15-year-old Carly will be lying joint 80th after a returning an eight-over-par score of 80. So she needs to improve considerably to banish the thought that she might not qualify.
Carly, pictured left, has been playing well in recent weeks - Scottish Under-21 and Under-18 titles and the European Young Masters crown have all been added to her impressive CV.
But, at Southerndown, where she was a member of the victorious Scotland girls team last week, Carly had nightmare double bogey 7s at the 12th and 13th in halves of 40. She did have birdies at the sixth and 18th but not enough to get her nearer to the par of 72.
Sally Watson from South Queensferry, beaten finalist last year, is the top Scot in joint fourth place with a par 72 - three shots behind the leader, yet another five-star Spanish prospect, Ana Fernandez de Diego. Sally matched the par with halves of 35 and 37.

In fact, she could have been leading the field but for a disastrous finish of bogey-bogey-double bogey.
Earlier in the inward half she had birdied the 10th and 12th and achieved an eagle 3 at the long 13th.
On the outward half, Sally had a birdie at the sixth and a bogey at the seventh.
Pamela Pretswell (Bothwell Castle) and Roseanne Niven (Crieff) both had 73s. Pamela started slowly with bogeys at the first and second but she dropped only one more shot, at the 16th, and had birdies at the sixth and 18th in halves of 36 and 37.
Roseanne, like Sally Watson, was cruising alongwith coming up to the last three holes, having birdied the fourth, sixth, 11th and 13th with only two shots dropped, at the third and 10th. Then the Crieff teenager, who will be returning soon to the University of California-Berkeley, suddenly dropped three shots to par in one hole with a triple bogey 7 at the 16th. Her halves were 34 and 39.
Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) had a steady 75 to be sharing 20th place.

CATRIONA MATTHEW
WINS IN SWEDEN:
FIRST SINCE 2004

FROM THE LADIES' EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
North Berwick's golfing daughter Catriona Matthew claimed her fifth worldwide title with a three-stroke victory at the Scandinavian TPC Hosted by Annika on Sunday.
The 37-year-old Scot posted a final round of four-under-par 68 to finish on nine-under 279 for the tournament – ahead of Sweden’s Sophie Gustafson and American Laura Diaz - to win her first professional title since the Wendy’s Championship for Children in 2004.
Matthew, picture right from LET website, was making only her 14th start of the year after coming back from maternity leave in March. She stormed into a comfortable lead after an astonishing start to her round.
She birdied four of the first five holes to take a five-stroke lead on nine-under-par before a bogey on the sixth hole temporarily halted her progress.
Another bogey at the 10th saw the mother-of-one drop to within one shot of second-day leader Diaz, who made a charge with three birdies in a row from the ninth hole. However Matthew pulled four strokes clear after back-to-back birdies at the 12th and 13th holes.
“Obviously I played really well. I got off to a good start,” said Matthew, who took six months off to have baby daughter Katie on December 18.
“I hit the ball really well. I was a little bit shaky on 10 and pushed my second shot but the birdies on 12 and 13 settled me down and I had good chances coming in.
“It’s fantastic. I haven’t won in a couple of years and there’s a great field here this week so I’m just thankful to have won.”
Like Diaz, Gustafson also made a charge with three consecutive birdies to move to five-under-par for the tournament after 12 holes. Another birdie on the 16th contributed to a faultless 68 for the 21-time tournament winner.
Diaz, who had started the day three shots off the pace on two-under-par, also posted a 68, but it wasn’t enough to catch Matthew, who began the day tied for the lead with American Brittany Lincicome on five-under-par.
Lincicome, the 2007 Ginn Open champion, stuttered to a 76 and eventually finished eighth on one-under-par.
Sweden’s Maria Hjorth enhanced her chances of being selected for the European Solheim Cup Team with an excellent two-under-par 70 to take a share of third place on four-under with World No 6 Suzann Pettersen of Norway.
Barsebäck regular Louise Stahle finished tied-sixth on three-under-par, while compatriot Caroline Hedwall was the leading amateur in seventh position on two-under.
Host Annika Sörenstam put her difficult week behind her after carding a confidence-boosting four-under-par 68 to finish in ninth place on level par.
“Today was a little different in many ways,” said Sörenstam, who spent some time on the range with her coach Henri Reis following her 74 on Saturday.
“I was able to hit some fairways and when you hit fairways you get birdie opportunities and I hit a few. A few putts make quite a difference.”
Following her ninth place, the former World Number One leapfrogged fellow Swede Linda Wessberg in the European Solheim Cup Team standings for the side that will face the United States next month at Halmstad in Sweden.
Sörenstam now takes fifth place, just inside the cut-off point for automatic selection. Next week’s Wales Ladies Championship of Europe at Machynys Peninsula Golf Club in Llanelli is the final qualifying event for the European side.
Matthew, who beat Rosie Jones 3 and 1 in the singles to reclaim the Solheim Cup for Europe at Barsebäck in 2003, said she had been delighted to return to the scene of Europe’s triumph.
"I have some happy memories here,” she enthused.“I loved the greens - I have never holed so many putts.
“It just about felt like I was playing in Scotland, I had so much support.”
Matthew also paid tribute to tournament Sörenstam, whom the Scot described as ‘the best golfer ever’.
“To play in a tournament hosted by Annika is just fantastic,” she said.
Matthew earned a first prize of €78.750 and climbed 12 places to third on the LET’s New Star Money List following her win.
She is also expected to climb from her 30th position in the Rolex World Rankings when the updated rankings are released on Monday.

EMILY MAKES SUCCESSFUL DEFENCE OF
MARY McCALLAY TROPHY AT D & G

Auchterarder’s Emily Ogilvy won the Mary McCallay Trophy 36-hole SLGA Order of Merit tournament for the second year in a row at Dumfries & Galloway Golf Club today.
With scores of 67 and 73 for 140 – against the CSS of 71 for both rounds – Emily won by one stroke from the fast-finishing Scottish champion Jenna Wilson (Strathaven).
Jenna had scores of 74 and 67.
Emily lost to Jenna in the final of the Scottish championship at Kilmarnock Barassie in May.
Emma also finished one shot ahead of Jenna in last year's tournament.
Former Scottish universities champion and twice Angus country title-winner, Anne Ramsay (Kirriemuir) finished third on 145 with scores of 72 and 73.
The only downside of the 2007 Mary McCallay Trophy tournament was the size of the field - only 15 players. An SLGA Order of Merit 36-hole event deserves better support than that, don't you think?

VIKKI SHARING SECOND PLACE IN FUTURES
TOUR EVENT IN WEST VIRGINIA

Vikki Laing went into the final round of the US Futures Tour event, the Betty Puskar Classic, in joint second place, three shots off the pace at The Pines Country Club, Morgantown in West Virginia.
The US-based Musselburgh exile had rounds of 68 and 69 over the rolling, mountainous course of 6,336yd with a par of 72.
Her 36-hole tally of 137 tied her with Kellee Booth from Texas and Eunjung Yi from California behind rookie leader Taylor Leon from Texas with 65 and 69 for 134.
Vikki was forced to practice patience with seven consecutive pars until she finally rolled in a 4ft birdie putt on the eighth hole. Saying her goal this week has been to improve her creativity around the greens, the Scot saved one par from 11 feet and carded three more birdies and a lip-out bogey in her second round.
“I’m pretty happy to be where I am,” said Vikki. “You have to be creative out here because there are a lot of little wedges, chances to spin it back and undulating greens. You have to focus on the terrain, hit it and just go chase it.”
The three other British players on the No 2 American women's pro circuit - Brenda McLarnon from belfast, Polly Willett from London and South Wales amateur Natasha Morgan, missed the cut at 147. McLarnon and Willett both talled 150 and Morgan 154.
