Sweden beat Netherlands in European girls' team final

SCOTLAND GIRLS FINISH WITH A WIN IN NORWAY

Scotland beat Austria 2-1 in their final match of a disappointing campaign in the European girls’ team golf championship at Oslo Golf Club, Norway.
The Scots failed to qualify for the championship match-play flight earlier in the week and ended with 13th place out of 19 countries in the final rankling.
The championship was disrupted by heavy rain and thunderstorms throughout – the singles ties on one afternoon were reduced to only nine holes after 90min playing time was lost in the morning due to bad weather.
The weather continued to make an impact on the final day. The threat of more severe storms prompted the organisers to cut the matches to one foursomes and two singles.
The ploy paid off when they were successful in getting the girls round in the dry and before the rain started again, soon after play finished.
Carly Booth (Comrie) and Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) lost the only foursome today by 3 and 2 but Scotland won the match overall, thanks to victories in the two singles by Sally Watson (Elie & Earlsferry), by a resounding 8 and 7, and Krystle Caithness (St Regulus) by 4 and 3.
Sweden beat Netherland 2-1 in the final to win the gold medals.
England were shocked 3-0 by the Czech Republic, who had also beaten Scotland on Thursday, and finished 10th.
Ireland lost 2 1/2- 1/2 to Italy and were placed 12th.
Wales, who did not have a match on the last day were ranked last of the 19 teams.
Next year's European girls' championship will be hosted by Murcar Links Golf Club, Aberdeen.

SAMMY AND JULIE VASS CARRY ON THE FAMILY
TRADITION AT TAIN GOLF CLUB

By ROBIN WILSON
It was not so much a family at war but a family domination of the women’s club championships at Tain last week and in the men’s scratch final Munro Ferries gained revenge for his defeat of 12 months ago at the hands of James Macleod.
At any time through the golfing season any one of the three Tain siblings, Mary Smith, Anne Ryan and Maggie Vass, are making golf news and now Maggie’s teenage daughters, Sammy (15) and Julie (13) are sharing part of the stage with their mother and Aunts.
Last week the three sisters were joined in the semi finals of the scratch championship by Sammy but it was Mary, the eldest sister, who prevailed once again. While Anne and Maggie were the dominant players in the 1980s and early 1990s, Mary only emerged as a first time winner in 1999 after her family had grown up.
She won again in 2000 and 2002 but had to concede to Audrey Murray over the next two years before recapturing the title in 2005 and retaining ever since, this year with a win in the final over young niece Sammy.
It was Sammy’s first time in the final, having beaten her auntie Anne in the semi final but Mary’s golf, just one above par, was too good for the youngster when the tie ended on the 16th green.
JULIE'S FIRST-TIME TRIUMPH
Sammy had, in a previous year, won the handicap championship and this year it was the turn of her younger sister, Julie, to triumph for the first time in this section by beating Claire Ross after 16 holes.
In the last 10 finals of the men’s scratch championship Munro Ferries and James Macleod have shared six wins between them but now Ferries has gone ahead with four wins. He beat the defending champion at the second extra hole.
James Macleod, who is the son of head greenkeeper Ian Macleod, had previous wins in 2001 and 2003. In last year's final, coming at the end of his golf scholarship in America, his golf was too hot for Ferries and he won easily after 13 holes.
After a return to America but this time working at golf clubs, mainly as a caddie, he has not played so much and his golf was not so sharp before coming up against an in-form Ferries who had led the qualifiers into the match-play stages setting a new course record of 64 in the process.
While both players began well by exchanging birdies on the first two holes the inclement weather of wind and rain spoiled play and par figures were sufficient to take holes. MacLeod won both the outward short holes with par but the first sign of trouble with his driver, that was to prove his downfall, showed through at the ninth hole with a visit to the bushes to hold just a one-hole lead at the turn for home.
Although he regained his two-hole advantage at the 10th, trouble on the 12th and 13th brought the game back level and with an excellent birdie 3 at the 14th, Ferries went ahead again for the first time since his birdie on the first hole.
BIRDIE PUTT OF 20FT
The lead was held until the 16th where Macleod rolled in a 20ft putt for birdie and then driver trouble showed again in the holder’s game at the 18th. From the rough he was able to salvage a half in 4 to continue the game to the 19th tee.
The first extra hole was halved but from another wayward drive at the second extra hole Macleod could only recover sideways to the fairway and after three years Ferries was champion once more.
Brian Waddell, Dennis Albutt, and Stuart Smith were three first time champions in the men’s other finals. Waddell beat Hamish Skinner to win the handicap cup, Albutt became the senior scratch champion with a last hole win over the defending champion
James Cunningham and Kenny Anderson lost his grip on the senior handicap cup to Stuart Smith who also won on the final green.
Tain Golf Club’s junior policy is also making winners outside the club. Last Saturday at Golspie 13-year-old Andrew Bell returned the lowest net handicap scores in the Millicent Bowl competition. With a handicap of 17, he had net rounds of 71 and 66 for 137 but unfortunately was not able to take home the Bowl as it is confined to Sutherland club members.

CZECH-MATE FOR SCOTS GIRLS IN OSLO RAIN

Scotland suffered another disappointment on the third day of the European girls' team championship at a very wet Oslo Golf Club, Norway.
After failing to qualify for the championship flight, the Scots were beaten 3-2 by the Czech Republic and the highest position they can now achieve in the final standings is 13th.
In all fairness, it was a dreadful day for golf. Heavy rain forced a 1 1/2hr suspension of play. The organising committee decided to reduce the afternoon singles to nine holes, which made it a bit of a lottery and not what you would expect in a European championship.
The Scots shared the morning foursomes 1-1 in which Carly Booth and Kelsey MacDonald were beaten 3 and 2 but Krystle Caithness and Sally Watson levelled matters, winning by the same margin.
In the abbreviated singles, Carly scored a 4 and 2 win but Sally Watson lost by 3 and 1 and Krystle Caithness went down by 2 and 1.
England, also competing in Flight 2, beat Iceland 4-1 and Ireland beat Finland 3-2.

SCOTLAND FAIL AGAIN TO MAKE CHAMPIONSHIP
FLIGHT OF EUROPEAN WOMEN'S TEAM EVENT

Wednesday was not a good day for Scotland's standing in the world of female amateur golf. Our girls failed to make the top flight in the European girls' team championship in Norway and our women's team, once again, failed to make the top eight championship flight in the European women's team championship in Italy.
England (third) and Wales (eighth) made the top flight but Scotland finished ninth in the 36-hole qualifying test and so were "relegated" to the Second Flight which includes Ireland, but that's no comfort.

DUNBARTONSHIRE & ARGYLL WIN WEST DIVISION
TITLE AND PLACE IN FINALS AT TULLIALLAN

Dunbartonshire & Argyll, who have not won the Scottish title since 1997, have joined the other divisional champions, Aberdeenshire, Dumfries-shire and Midlothian, in the Scottish women’s county golf finals at Tulliallan Golf Club from August 31 to September 2.
They won the West Division women’s team championship – their ticket to the county finals – at Prestwick St Nicholas Golf Club today, clinching the title with a 7-2 win over Ayrshire while Lanarkshire were beating the defending champions, Renfrewshire, 5-4.
D&A started the three-day programme by drawing with Lanarkshire but they won their next two matches, beating Renfrewshire on Tuesday, to finish with 2 1/2pt out of three.
Lanarkshire were runners-up with 1 1/2pt while Renfrewshire and Renfrewshire both finished with one point.
Ayrshire resisted the D&A victory roll in the morning foursomes which were shared but it was one-way traffic in the afternoon singles. Kylie Walker, Judy Galbraith, Jill Meldrum, Anne Laing and Sara Bishop won for D&A and Gemma Webster halved the other tie.
Three times Scottish champion Anne Laing was D&A’s top performer with 4 1/2pt out of six, closely followed by Sara Bishop with 4pt out of five.
But the players who gained the most points over the three days were teenager Megan Briggs and Claire-Marie Carlton, both of Renfrewshire. Megan won six out of six ties, while Claire-Marie had 5pt out of six to her credit.

Home countries' disappointment in Norway

SCOTLAND, ENGLAND, IRELAND AND WALES
ALL FAIL TO MAKE CHAMPIONSHIP FLIGHT

Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales all failed to qualify for the championship match-play flight of eight teams for the European girls’ team golf championship at Oslo Golf Club, Norway today.
The Scots – Carly Booth (Comrie), Sally Watson (Elie & Earlsferry), Krystle Caithness (St Regulus) and Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) – finished the 36-hole stroke-play eliminator with a 23-over-par total of 455.
That was seven shots too many to make the top eight.
England (450) just missed out in ninth place and Ireland (451) were 10th ahead of 11th placed Scotland with Wales (488) last of the 19 competing countries.
Carly Booh was Scotland’s best second-round performer with a 74 for a total of 149, which put her joint 22nd in the individual standings.
Kelsey MacDonald and Sally Watson tied for 29TH place on 153. Kelsey had a 73 in the second round, Sally a 78.
Krystle Caithness, expected to be the dominant force for these Scotland Under-18s, again failed to produce anything like the form which has earned her a place in the Great Britain & Ireland women’s team for the Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent at Fairmont St Andrews at the end of the month.
Krystle had the non-counting score for the second day in a row – a 78 for 157, which put her joint 54th in the standings.

JENNA WILSON 69 AS SCOTS JOINT
SIXTH IN EUROPEAN WOMEN'S TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP FIRST Q ROUND

Scotland were lying joint sixth at the halfway stage of the stroke-play qualifying competition in the European women's amateur team championship at Golf Club Castelconturbia, Italy.
Anna Nordqvist (Sweden), beaten in the final of the recent Ladies' British open amateur championship, showed the low-scoring possibilities with a course-record 64, the lowest score ever recorded by anyone, male or female, amateur or professional at this Italian venue.
Even Jose Maria Olazabal and Costantino Rocca could not do better than 66s in their day.
Anna had eight birdies and no bogeys.
Carlota Ciganda, who beat Miss Nordqvist in the final at Alwoodley, spearheaded Spain into the lead with a 66, closely followed by compatriot Emma Cabrera.
England did best of the four home countries with a first-round team total of 363 to put them in fourth place after Spain (349), Sweden (357) and Germany (359).
Rachel Bell and Melissa Reid top-scored for England with 71 apiece. England were able to discard one of their 74s.
Contrast that with Scotland who had to count a 75 (from Rachael Livingstone), a 76 (from Michele Thomson) and a 77 (from Heather MacRae). Emily Ogilvy (78) had Scotland's non-counting score.
Jenna Wilson, pictured above, had a good day with a three-under-par 69 which included five birdies and two bogeys.
Next best in the Scotland camp was Roseanne Niven with a 74.
The Scots are in joint sixth place on 371 with France.
Ireland (369) are just ahead of Scotland in fifth place. Danielle McVeigh was the Irish pin-up girl with a 68.
Wales are in eighth place - and only eight teams make up the championship flight - with 372. Sahra Hassan was the Welsh best with a 73.

SCOTS GIRLS NEED SPECIAL EFFORT
TO MAKE CHAMPIONSHIP FLIGHT
IN A VERY WET NORWAY

Scotland will have to pull up their socks if they are to be one of the top eight teams who will go forward to the championship match-play flight after tomorrow's second stroke-play qualifying round of the European girls’ team golf championship at Oslo Golf Club, Norway.
On a miserably wet day – the start was delayed until 11am because conditions were so bad, the Scots squad mustered a team total of 228. Vagliano Trophy player Krystle Caithness (St Regulus), expected to be the lead player had, instead, a non-counting score of 79. Only the best three from score counted.
So that left Scotland sharing 10th place with Finland and Italy and needing to overtake both Netherlands and Belgium who start the second Q round three strokes ahead of them.
LOWEST SCORERS
Comrie’s Carly Booth and Sally Watson (Elie & Earlsferry) were Scotland’s lowest scorers.
They both had three-over-par 75s to be joint 19th in the individual scores.. Carly bogeyed the first, third, fourth and 13th before she had her first and only birdie at the 15th in halves of 39 and 36.
Sally had a birdie at the fifth but bogeys at the foureth, sixth, eighth and 16th in halves of 38 and 37.
Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) had a disappointing 79 for joint 48th position. Kelsey bogeyed the third, sixth, seventh and 17th before finishing with a double-bogey at the 18th in halves of 39. Kelsey had no birdies.
Krystle Caithness’s 79 included a triple bogey 7 at the fourth and finished with three successive bogeys.
Krystle did have birdies at the second, 10th and 14th in halves of 41 and 38.
The best score of the day was a three-under-par 69 from Audrey Gourmand (France).

DUNBARTONSHIRE & ARGYLL LEAD WEST
DIVISION WOMEN’S INTER-COUNTY TABLE

Dunbartonshire & Argyll moved into a marginal lead in the West Division inter-county team golf championship table at Prestwick St Nicholas Golf Club today.
After a draw with Lanarkshire on Monday, D&A dented the 100 per cent record of title-holders Renfrewshire by beating them 5-4.
In the other match, Ayrshire beat Lanarkshire 5-4 which all but ends the latter’s hopes of going forward as divisional champions to the Scottish county finals at Tulliallan Golf Club at the end of next month.
D&A lead with 1 1/2pt (one win, one draw) from Renfrewshire and Ayrshire 1pt (one win each) and Lanarkshire 1/2pt (one draw).
In Wednesday’s final programme, D&A play Ayrshire and a win would secure them the title.
Renfrewshire looked well on their way to a second win when they led D&A 2-1 after the foursomes and then took the top two singles through Megan Briggs and Claire-Marie Carlton.
But D&A wrapped up the last four singles for a notable come-from-behind victory through Sara Bishop, Anne Laing, Gemma Webster and Kylie Walker.
Ayrshire led Lanarkshire 2-1 after the foursomes and then won the top two singles through Lesley Hendry and Debbie Watt. Catherine Malcolm got Ayrshire’s clinching point.

Cara Easton and Jane Turner after the prizegiving

Jane Turner wins East of Scotland Girls Championship

Jane Turner of the host club, Mortonhall, won the East of Scotland Girls Championship for the third time in succession this afternoon, when she beat a gallant Cara Easton (Dalmahoy) by 6&5 in an exciting final.

Don't let the scoreline fool you into thinking that it was a one-sided contest as 14 year old Cara was out in a creditable two over par 39 and six down to a barrage of birdies from her 18 year old opponent. Jane had five birdies in an outward half of four under par 33. They halved the 10th in par 3's and then Cara won the 11th after an uncharacteristic four-from-the-edge from Jane. Jane reduced the 433 yard par 5 12th to a drive and short iron for her 6th birdie and a return to six up, and a half at the 13th gave Jane the East of Scotland title.

In the morning semifinals, Jane beat Susan Jackson (Ladybank) by 5&3, and Cara beat 14-year-old Gabrielle Macdonald (Prestonfield) by 4&3

This is the first time that anyone has won the 30-year-old Championship trophy, donated by Marjory Ferguson, three times in succession. There are many illustrious names including Jane Connachan, Catriona Lambert, Hilary Monaghan, Lesley Nicholson, Vikki Laing, Lynn Kenny and Louise Kenney on the plinth.
Next year Jane will be too old to compete, so the scene is set for a new name on the trophy.

“This is our thirtieth year of partnership with the Scottish Golf Union and we are delighted to have been able to encourage the development of Scottish golf over the years. It is very pleasing to see many youngsters who have played in our under 16s tournament go on to national and international level and many on to the professional circuit,”
“The popularity of the tournament is evident by the distances many travel to play. In recent years we’ve had competitors with Scottish connections from the US, Saudi Arabia and across Europe, as well as sons of well-known pros, like Bernard Gallacher and Sam Torrance. Seeing the new talent emerge and progress over the years makes the company’s investment worthwhile.”
Hamish Grey, SGU Chief Executive, added:
“We’re extremely grateful to Douglas Gillespie and his staff for their wonderful support of Scottish golf over the last thirty years. Many sponsors come and go but Douglas has stood by the organisation and helped nurture some of the game’s current stars in Scotland.”
“The Under 16s championship has gone from strength to strength and the record entry this year has proved just how popular the championship has become. I’m sure this month’s event will provide a fitting tribute to Douglas’ sponsorship.”
Whilst the world’s leading golf stars battle it out at Loch Lomond on the same week, many of the UK’s most promising youngsters will line up in Ayrshire to contest the prestigious trophy and emulate past champions now emerging as future stars. Last year’s winner, Sam McLaren, went on to represent Scotland as they defeated England at Under 16s level for the first time, whilst 2005 champion Darren Renwick has become an established England Boys international.
Reigning Scottish Under 14s champion Paul McPhee, from the King James VI club in Perth, will be looking to step up an age group and repeat his form at Deeside last year, whilst Clydebank’s young hot shot, John Henry, is aiming to follow in the footsteps of elder brother Scott, the former double Scottish boys champion.
The lowest handicap player in the field is Truro’s Billy Downing (scratch), winner of the 2005 Scottish Under 14s crown, while Inchmarlo’s Chris Robb at handicap one is the lowest Scot in the championship along with Dalmahoy’s Tom Blennerhassett. Chris will be looking for inspiration from fellow Aberdonians Richie Ramsay and James Byrne, two of the amateur game’s brightest prospects.
The Douglas Gillespie Scottish Boys Under-16s Championship tees off tomorrow. A handicap ballot of 6.1 has been set for the field of 120. Parents and spectators are welcome to attend throughout the week.

TWO SCOTS IN TOP SIX OF BRITISH WOMEN’S
MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Two Scottish exiles, Valerie Melvin and Caroline Agnew finished joint second and sixth respectively today (Sunday) in the 54-hole British women’s mid-amateur stroke-play championship won by seven strokes by Emma Duggleby (Malton & Norton) at Frilford Heath Golf Club, Oxfordshire..
Valerie, pictured right, beaten by Catriona Matthew in the 1994 Scottish women’s amateur championship at Gullane, has lived and worked in the United States for several years.
She had scores of 78, 75 and 74 for 227 to tie with Australian Bronwyn Mullins-Lane fro second place behind Miss Duggleby. Valerie birdied the second, third, ninth and 12th in halves of 35 and 39. Her Australian rival had an eagle 3 at the par-5 sixth in her final round of 73.
Emma’s scores of 72, 76 and 72 for a one-over-par tally of 220 underlined the fact that if ever a player retired from international selection far too early, as Curtis Cup player Emma did voluntarily in 2004, it was her. She is still only 35.
Caroline Agnew, pictured left, Scottish Under-18 girls champion in 1993 and beaten by Elaine Moffat in the Scottish women’s final of 1998 at North Berwick, moved south in pursuit of work and now plays out of Newmarket Links Golf Club and is also a Cambridgeshire & Huntingdonshire county player.
She had scores of 77, 79 and 77 for 233, parring the last eight holes of the tournament.
Fife county player Jocelyn Carthew (Ladybank) finished joint 15th on 244 with scores of 82, 85 and 77.
