Sally Watson wins East of Scotland Girls Championship
13 year old Sally Watson, a member of Murrayfield and Elie and Earlsferry,
won the East of Scotland Girls Championship today at Kingsknowe
in a top class final that could not have be rivalled in the adult
arena.
Her opponent, 17 year old Amanda Edwards of Liberton, played some
super golf herself, but could not get the better of her younger
opponent. The final result was 2 and 1.
Amanda started shakily and lost the first two holes, and was still
the same margin down at the turn. Sally showed a chink in her armour
when she gave back a hole by three-putting the 10th, and after halving
the short 11th in par 3's, it looked as if Amanda's luck had turned
when she won 12 and 13 to go one up for the first time in the match.
However Sally moved up a gear and won 14 and 15 with 3's. Sally
reached the 433 yard 16th with a drive and 8 iron to 6 feet, and
looked like winning the hole with Amanda short in two, but a pitch
and putt from Amanda and a missed putt from Sally gave them a half.
One up playing 17, Sally put her second to 10 feet and holed the
putt for a birdie 3 and the Championship.
In the morning semi-finals, Sally beat Dunblane Champion Sarah Herd
by 3 and 2 and Amanda beat Megan Barbour on the last green after
being three up with three to play.

Sally Watson (Elie and Earlsferry) and Amanda Edwards (Liberton),
both members of Midlothian County, had 76's and tied for the best

today.
New Scottish Girls' cap Sally won on the better inward half, and
also won the RBoS/Daily Telegraph qualifier, with a chance to go
forward to the National Finals at Sun City, South Africa in October.
Sarah Horsburgh from Dunbar took third place on 78, on the better
inward half from Sally's elder sister Rebecca Watson. This pair,
both off 10 handicap, also tied for first Handicap Prize, which
Sarah won on the better inward half..
Rebecca had the consolation of winning the Under 16 handicap award.
Amanda Edwards won the Under 18 handicap prize with a net 71, and
Cara Easton (Dalmahoy) the smallest entrant in the field, took the
Under 14 prize with a net 74 off a handicap of 20.
The best eight scratch scores qualified for the Match play stages
of the East of Scotland Girls Championship.
Champion of champions
Some cracking ties were played in the first round which took place
this afternoon.
Murrayfield Ladies' Champion Sally Watson was three up at the turn
against Stirling Ladies' Champion Nicola Melville, but lost the
tenth by three-putting and then the pair, with Nicola chipping and
putting like a demon, managed to halve every hole all the way to
the 17th, when Nicola ran out of holes and Sally won by 2 and 1.
Glencorse Ladies' Champion and last year's runner-up, Jane Turner
gave herself too much to do with some wayward driving and missed
greens, and Dunblane Ladies' Champion Sara Herd's steady play paid
dividends when she came through to win at the sixteenth by 3 and
2.
Rebecca Watson, Junior Champion at Murrayfield, and long-hitting
North Berwick Ladies' Champion, Megan Barbour, had a great tussle
, with Megan winning by 2 and 1.
Liberton ladies Champion, Amanda Edwards, was too strong on the
day against a valiant opponent in Ashleigh Wilton, and won by 6
and 5.
The semifinals and final take place on Friday at 9:30am and 2pm.
Sally Watson will play Sarah Herd and Megan Barbour takes on Amanda
Edwards.
