Irish International Helen Jones will lead Royal Portrush in

8-10). Maria Dunne, a member of last year's victorious Irish
team at Cruden Bay, is also included.
Eileen Rose Power has recovered from the back problem that
forced her to withdraw from the Munster team in the recent
interprovincial championship and will play at number one for
Kilkenny.
Tracey Eakin has also recovered from injury and will lead
the Killarney team.
Former international Deirdre Walsh, who has played for Milltown
in the past, returns to her native Roscommon to boost their
chances of winning the Suzuki Senior Cup for the first time
in this their centenary year.

Stirling University looking for fixtures
New England International cap, Alex Marshall, a second year
student at the University of Stirling, has emailed me to say
that she is hoping to organise some matches for the University
of Stirling Ladies' Golf team this coming autumn through until
May 2005.
Alex, Olivia Briggs and Dawn Dewar are going to be joined
by another three low handicap girls this September, and, as
a team of six, they can offer some great competition to Clubs,
County Training Teams or other University teams over the winter
months. The girls would prefer to play on Wednesday or Sunday
afternoons, and can offer Stirling Golf Club as a return venue.
Alex asks if Clubs, Counties or Universities within 50 miles
of Stirling, who might like to have a fixture with the University
of Stirling, to get in touch with her. Her email is alexmarsh8@hotmail.com

received the A T Personnel Schools Team Handicap Trophy from
Annette Masson of the sponsors at Peterculter Golf Club.
MONIFIETH GIRLS BEAT THE BOYS TO WIN NE SCHOOLS TROPHY
Monifieth High School's all-girl team of Rebecca Wilson, Kirsty
Moss and Laura Falconer won the A T Personnel Schools Team
Challenge Handicap Trophy at Peterculter Golf Club near Aberdeen
on Monday.
For Rebecca it was two successful trips to the North-east
in two days. On Sunday, she won the Jean Law Trophy for the
lowest net score at the North of Scotland girls' championship
at Inchmarlo Golf Centre, Banchory.
Rebecca's net 71 off eight coupled with Kirsty Moss's 73 off
16 and Laura Falconer's 76 off 12 gave Monifieth a net team
total of 220.
That score was equalled by Meldrum Academy's boys team of
David Millar, Ewen Barrack, and Mark Cooper but the Monifieth
girls won the countback on the better inward half net total.
Peterhead Academy won the Paul Lawrie Schools Team Challenge
scratch trophy. Philip McLean's score of 69 - the best individual
performance on a day of wind and rain - coupled with Luke
Barbour's 78 and Chris Forman's 84 gave the Buchan boys a
gross total of 231 - seven shots ahead of runners-up
Ellon Academy with Hazlehead Academy (239) third.
Paul Lawrie was unable to attend to present the trophy because
of a corporate golf day engagement in Norway.

KATY
WINS NORTH GIRLS' PLAY-OFF
Carnoustie teenage prospect Katy McNicoll, pictured right,
put another title on her golfing CV when she won the North
of Scotland girls' golf championship for the first time at
Inchmarlo Golf Centre, Banchory yesterday (Sunday).
Katy beat another 16-year-old five-handicapper, Laura Murray
(Alford) at the first hole of a sudden death play-off after
they had tied on 77 in quite breezy conditions at the head
of a record field of 37.
"I lost in the semi-finals of the North of Scotland women's
championship at Strathmore in July so I was determined to
do better in the girls' tournament," said Katy who has
already won the Angus county girls' and the
Carnoustie Links women's open titles this season.
Laura, level par with three holes to play, fell victim to
the testing finish where drives that land in the trees can
be very costly. Miss Murray finished 5-5-7 (bogey-bogey-triple
bogey) for her 77, while playing partner Miss Nicoll finished
6-4-5 (double bogey-par-bogey).
Scotland girls cap Roseanne Niven (Crieff), winner of the
Grampian TV girls championship over the same Laird's Course
12 months ago, finished third on 78. She made her mistakes
at the start of the round, running up three 6s in the first
four holes. Ironically, she parred the fearsome last three
holes but by then it was too late.
Rebecca Wilson, from Monifieth, only 14 years of age, won
the Jean Law Trophy for the best net score of 72 off eight
of a handicap. Michelle Thomson (McDonald Ellon) had the same
score off five but was edged out on a
countback.

County Finals
KELSEY (13) SELECTED BY NORTHERN COUNTIES FOR SCOTTISH WOMEN'S
COUNTY FINALS
Nairn Dunbar junior member Kelsey Macdonald, whose 14th birthday
is not until October, is set to become one of the youngest
competitors ever to play in the Scottish women's county golf
championship finals, to be held
over her home course from September 17 to 19.
Kelsey has been named in a Northern Counties team which shows
only one change from the eight who qualified for the finals
by winning the Northern Division team title at Monifieth in
June.
Miss Macdonald, who plays off four of a handicap, makes her
debut at county level by taking the place of Lesley Mackay
(Royal Dornoch) who is now a trainee assistant professional
with Karyn Dallas at Kirriemuir Golf Club.
The Northern Counties team is: Cara Gruber (Royal Dornoch),
Kerri Harper (Inverness), Kelsey Macdonald (Nairn Dunbar),
Pam Mackay (Royal Dornoch), Liz McKinnon (Nairn), Pat McLennan
(Nairn), Jenny Milne (Elgin), Audrey Scott (Tain).
The other qualifiers for the county finals are Borders, Dunbartonshire
& Argyll and Fife.
Would any of the other Counties involved like to email
me with their teams?

CLARE
NAMED FOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN PUERTO RICO
Victory in the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship
has earned Clare Queen, picured right, 21-year-old from Drumpellier,
one of the three places in the Great Britain & Ireland
team to compete in the women's world amateur team championship
for the Espirito Santo Trophy at Puerto Rico from October
20 to 23.
The
other team members are: 20-year-old Welsh left-hander Stephanie

Leeds last Friday, and Emma Duggleby (Malton & Norton)
(pictured below right), who will be 33 before the world championship.

for the trip to Puerto Rico.
Miss Queen made her debut for Great Britain & Ireland
in last year's Vagliano Trophy win over the Continent of Europe
at Co Louth, Ireland.

Gibson Cup
The Gibson Challenge Cup is a wonderful opportunity to play
foursomes golf and compete in one of the oldest golf tournaments
for ladies in the Edinburgh area. This year’s competition
is being held over the weekend of 2nd and 3rd October so if
your diary is free that weekend, find yourself a partner and
enter.
Played over Braids No.1 Golf Course, the format includes a
medal foursomes qualifying round (off handicap, max 30) with
the opportunity to play at least once more over the Braids
–all for the entry fee of only £10 per couple.
There is a good prize table, courtesy of generous sponsors
at the Braid Hills Golf Centre and Driving Range.
The four best net scores from the Saturday morning qualifying
round go through to the matchplay knock-out stages and those
failing to make the top four can play in a Consolation Plate
using the Stableford points scoring system with the opportunity
to play the Braids twice more. Competitors need to be available
on the morning of Saturday 2nd October and, if they wish to,
and qualify for, the matchplay stages, should be available
both Sunday morning and afternoon. The Consolation Plate rounds
may be played on the Saturday afternoon and/or the Sunday
morning.
Entry Forms can be obtained from Edinburgh Leisure (0131 650

SPANISH
YOUNGSTER'S HISTORIC WIN IN EUROPEAN WOMEN'S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Carlota Ciganda, 14-year-old winner of the European Young
Masters girls' title last month, notched up an even more significant
win in her native Spain yesterday (Sunday) when she won the
European women's individual
amateur golf championship by eight shots.
It was the first win by a Spaniard in the tournament which
was first played in 1986.
Carlota returned scores of 65 (a course record), 68, 74 and
75 for a six-under-par total of 282 at Ulzama Golf Club in
northern Spain. It was a Spanish 1-2-3 with Elisa Serramia,
winner of the British women's open amateur title at Lindrick
last year, and Maria Hernandez finishing joint second on two-over
290.
No British or Irish players took part in the event which clashed
with the British women's open amateur stroke-play championship,
played from Wednesday to Friday at Alwoodley, Leeds.
Miss Ciganda, who surprisingly lost in the second round of
the British girls' open championship at Lanark earlier this
month, led by nine shots at halfway and by 10 with one round
to go.

front nine.
"I was hitting it close, and my score could have been lower
today," said the second-year player from Stirling, Scotland,
who hopes for a strong finish this week at the season-ending

Clare
wins British Open Stroke-play
Clare Queen, 23-year-old former British girls' match-play
and stroke-play champion, came through a roller-coaster ride
of a final round to win a play-off for the British women's
open amateur stroke-play championship at Alwoodley, Leeds
today.
The Drumpellier player, a reserve for the GB&I Curtis
Cup team in June but now a definite contender to be one of
the three players to be sent to the Espirito Santo Trophy
world team championship in Puerto Rico, had led at the halfway
stage and by one stroke from Curtis Cup veteran Emma Duggleby,
playing in her native Yorkshire, with 18 holes to play.
Emma blew her title chance with a double-bogey 6 at the 17th
and a bogey at the 18th for a closing 77 and a total of seven-over-par
295.
Clare Queen, who had run up a double-bogey 6 herself at the
13th, needed a par at the last to pip clubhouse leaders Shelley
McKevitt, the defending champion from Reading, and Welsh left-hander
Stephanie Evans (Vale of Llangollen).
But the Scot took a bogey 5 for a 77 and could only match
the six-over-par 294 tallies of Miss McKevitt, who had coming
roaring up the scoreboard with a brilliant last round of five-under-par
67, and Miss Evans who closed with a 75.
Miss Queen ended the play-off in quick time with a birdie
at the first extra hole.

Spanish youngster Carlota Cigando has increased her lead to
10 shots with one round to play in the European women's individual
amateur golf championship at Ulzama Golf Club in northern

a 68 on Thursday to lead by nine shots at halfway. Carlota
came down to earth with a third-round 74 but her 54-hole tally
of nine-under-par 207 was still a long way clear of the three

CLARE
QUEEN TAKES UP HALFWAY LEAD IN "BRITISH" AT ALWOODLEY
Former British girls champion Clare Queen, pictured right, from
Drumpellier is on the trail of another national title. She
leads the field by one shot at the halfway stage of the British
women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Alwoodley,
Leeds.
Clare, third in this tournament last year behind Shelley McKevitt
and former Scottish champion Lynn Kenny, had Fiona Anderson,
the Scotland skipper for next month's women's home internationals,
at her side as she shot a second-round, two-under-par 70 for
a 36-hole tally of level par 144.
Fiona, who played in four Scottish championship finals and
won the title playing out of Blairgowrie in 1987, is now a
member at Formby Ladies and lives in the Manchester area.
Clare birdied the fifth and eighth in an outward 35 before
dropping a shot at the 10th. After a birdie at the 12th, Miss
Queen wobbled slightly with a double-bogey 6 at the 13th but
a birdie 2 at the short 14th restored her confidence and she
picked up a fifth birdie of the round, at the 16th, in coming
home in level par 35 for her 70.
Miss Queen leads by one shot from Curtis Cup veteran Emma
Duggleby, playing in her native Yorkshire. Emma had a 72 for
145.
Overnight leader Marie Allen from Moor Park slipped out of
the pole position with a 78 for 149.
Players with totals of 158 and better qualified for Friday's
final two rounds.
Scots who made it through with Clare Queen were Lynn Kenny
on 151 after a 75; Jenna Wilson (Strathaven) on 156 with an
80; Kelly Brotherton (Tulliallan) on 157 following an 82.
Inverness-based New Zealander Liz McKinnon (Nairn) and Stirling
University student, English-born Olivia Briggs both qualified
on the limit mark of 158.
Liz shot a second 79 while Olivia had an 81 in the second
round. Scots who failed were Gemma Webster (Hilton Park) on

SPANISH WONDER GIRL GOES NINE SHOTS CLEAR IN EUROPEAN
WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP
Spanish wondergirl Carlota Ciganda - only 14 years old - has
surged nine strokes clear of the field at the halfway stage
of the European women's individual amateur team golf championship
at Ulzama Golf Club in northern
Spain.
Carlota, who shot a course-record 65 in the first round, followed
that up with a four-under-par round of 68 for a brilliant
36-hole total of 11-under-par 133.
Miss Ciganda won the European Young Masters' girls title in
Austria a few weeks ago, a performance that earned her a place
in the European team for the mixed Junior Ryder Cup match
against the United States in America next month.
Carlota's nearest rival at the start of the third round is
Dewi-Claire Schreefel of the Netherlands with scores of 72
and 70 for 142.

SCOTS PAIR FACE MOLINARI BROTHERS IN ST ANDREWS TROPHY
AT NAIRN
Great Britain & Ireland skipper Garth McGimpsey has paired
Jamie McLeary from Leven Golfing Society with Windyhill's
Andrew McArthur in the last of the four morning foursomes
in the opening session of play in the St Andrews Trophy match
against the Continent of Europe at Nairn Golf Club tomorrow
(Friday).
The Scots face the strongest bonding in the Continental line-up
the brothers Molinari - Edoardo and Francesco - from Italy.
Francesco was beaten by Gary Wolstenholme in the semi-finals
of the 2003 British Amateur championship at Royal Troon and
in this year's tournament, over the Old Course, St Andrews,
Francesco lost in the quarter-finals to the eventual 2004
champion, Stuart Wilson from Forfar.
Wilson has fellow Walker Cup player, Nigel Edwards, as his
partner in the third foursome against the Spanish pairing
of Gonzala Fernandez-Castano and Alfred Garcia Heredia.
Most of the GB&I team of nine, and quite a few of the
Continental team, played in last year's European individual
amateur championship over the classic Nairn links just over
12 months ago.
But for Gary Wolstenholme, in particular, a return to Nairn
means something special. He is the only survivor from the
Great Britain & Ireland line-up who played in the 1999
Walker Cup victory by 15-9 over the United States at Nairn.
Great Britain & Ireland have a commanding 21-3 lead -
there has yet to be a halved match - in this biennial, two-day
contest. The Continentals have never won as the visiting team.
These are golden days for GB&I men's and junior amateur
golf with four wins in the past five Walker Cup encounters
and Matthew Richardson from Middlesex, one of this weekend's
team, winning the European individual title last week from
fellow Englishman Gary Lockerbie.
The Jacques Leglise Trophy boys' match is played every year
and GB&I lead the Continent 29-7 in this contest which
pinpoints the adult stars of tomorrow, amateur and professional.
All the boys in the match are outstanding prospects but there
will be particular home interest in new British boys champion
Jordan Findlay, the 16-year-old from Fraserburgh, Paul O'Hara
(Colville Park), who reached the
final of the Scottish MEN'S amateur championship at Gullane
at the end of last month, and Scott Henry (Cardross), who
this season became only the third player to win both the Scottish
boys' match-play and stroke-play titles in the same year.
Geoff Toye, the GB&I boys' team manager, said: "It was
a difficult team to pick as there are a lot of good players
round this year. And the way the selection process has gone
has resulted in several good players just missing out.
"Just how keen our team are to win is shown by their captain,
Cian McNamara, who has delayed starting college in America
until next week. He flies to the States on Monday."

British Womens Open Amateur Stroke-Play Championship
Curtis Cup reserves Clare Queen (Drumpellier) and Lynn Kenny
(Stirling University), third and second respectively behind
winner Shelley McKevitt (Reading) last year, finished among
the top 20 in the first round of the British women's open
amateur stroke-play golf championshi at Alwoodley, Leeds yesterday
(Wed).
But both were kicking themselves that they didn't get closer
to the overnight leader, uncapped English player Marie Allen
from Moor Park who shot a one-under-par 71.
Clare Queen dropped two shots over the last five holes in
posting a 74 while Lynn Kenny had to mark up a 76 after stumbling
to a triple bogey 7 on the 17th, slicing her second shot into
the deep stuff and losing the ball.
Between Clare and Lynn at 75 on the scoreboard is 19-year-old
Kelly Brotherton (Tulliallan), winner of the Scottish girls'
match-play title last year at Newmachar and beaten in the
final of the same championship at
Pumpherston in July, which was Kelly's last competitive appearance
until she teed it up at Alwoodley yesterday.
After three bogeys in four holes early on the inward half,
Kelly steadied up to cover the last five holes in one-under-par,
tahnks to a birdie at the 16th.
Alongside Lynn Kenny on the 76 mark is new Scotland home internationals
cap Jenna Wilson (Strathaven) who was five over par after
only seven holes but covered the remainder in one under the
card.
Gemma Webster (Hilton Park) and Inverness-based New Zealander
Liz McKinnon (Nairn) both had 79s. Cara Gruber (Royal Dornoch)
scored 80, one better than the North of Scotland champion
Alexandra Bushby (Strathmore).
Monifieth's Dawn Dewar (Stirling University) had an 82.
Martine Pow (Selkirk), who will gain her first full cap for
Scotland next month at the age of 39, ran up a 10 at the par-5
fourth and also had double bogeys at the first and seventh
in an outward half of 47. She finished on
85.
Scottish schoolgirls champion Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze)
fainted before she was due to go out for her round in the
morning. She was advised by a doctor not to play.

JUNIOR
RYDER CUPPER CARLOTA SPREADEAGLES EUROPEAN FIELD
SPANISH youngster Carlota Ciganda, pictured right, 14-year-old
winner of the European Young Masters' girls' title this summer
by seven shots, jumped into a commanding lead early on the
first day of the 72-hole European women's individual amateur
golf championship at Ulzama Golf Club, 20 miles from Pamplona
in northern Spain.
Carlota, one of Europe's line-up for the mixed Junior Ryder
Cup match against the United States next month, shot a record-breaking,
seven-under-par 65 with birdies at the second, third, fifth,
ninth, 11th, 12th, 14th and 16th. There was only one bogey
- at the 15th - on her excellent card which spreadeagled a
field containing no British Isles players because of a head-on
clash of dates with the British women's open amateur championship
at Alwoodley.
At the end of the day, Miss Ciganda led by five shots from
two other Spaniards, Emma Cabrera and Ines Diaz-Negrete and
Finland's Hanna-Leeven Salonen.
Among those left trailing in Carlota's wake were Azahara Munoz,
the 16-year-old from Malaga who won the British girls' open
title at Lanark earlier this month, and another Spaniard,
Elisa Serramia who won the British women's open amateur title
at Lindrick in June last year.

OH, CALCUTTA! SMRITI WINS FUTURES TOUR EVENT
Smriti Mehra from Calcutta won the $9,100 top prize in the
US Futures Tour event - the Hunters Oak Classic at Queenstown,
Maryland, which finished on Sunday.
The big-hitter from India had rounds of 66, 71 and 71 for
a three-under--par total of 213 in a event which was played
in high temperatures and occasional stormy weather.
Malinda Johnson from Wisconsin collected the runner-up prize
of $6,500 with scores of 74, 673 and 67.
The cut figure - 36-hole totals of eight-over-par 152 and
better made it through to the final round - was unusually
high, because of a combination of the strength-sapping conditions
and severe pin placements on undulating greens.
Heather Stirling from Bridge of Allan was eliminated on 154
after a pair of 77s.
Fellow past Scottish women's amateur champion Linzi Morton
from Alloa withdrew after an opening round of 81.
A nationality note: Most of the 13 Korean or Chinese players
in the starting field made the cut and five of them were top-14
finishers.

SOME LIKE HOT ... BUT NOT HEATHER AND LINZI
Former Scottish amateur champions Heather Stirling and Linzi
Morton struggled in the heat and humidity at Queenstown, Maryland
for the first round of the Hunters Oak Classic tournament,
the latest event on the US Futures Tour (on Friday).
One player collapsed in temperatures in the high 80s with
80 % humidity. Heather from Stirling was lying tied for 74th
place afte a five-over-par round of 77 (38-39) on a 6,370yd
course with undulating greens and severe pin placements.
Linzi Morton from Alloa has little or no chance of surviving
the 36-hole cut in the three-round round after running up
an 81 (38-43).
No surprise than Smriti Mehra from Calcutta, India - a player
well used to extremes of heat, stole a four-stroke lead ont
he field with a 66 (35-31).
Lying second overnight was Kylie Pratt from Mackay, Australia.
And guess what? Kylie also loves playing in baking temperatures.

FIVE NEW CAPS IN ENGLAND TEAM FOR HOME INTERNATIONALS
England have named a team of surprises for the women's home
internationals at Royal Porthcawl, South Wales from September
8 to 10.
Fame More, Nikki Timmins and Shelley McKevitt, all of whom
played in this year's GB&I Curtis Cup team at Formby,
have not been selected.
Fame More has made no secret of the fact that she is going
to have another go at getting through the European Ladies
Tour School but there has been no advance warning that Shelley
McKevitt, who won the Frilford Heath Open Salver only this
week, was contemplating an early move into the pro ranks.
Nikki Timmins is a teacher in Kent so we can only presume
she is not available because of her school commitments.
Only three members of the England team who were beaten by
Ireland on the last day at Cruden Bay last year - which meant
that Scotland were pipped for the title - are in the 2004
line-up Curtis Cup veteran Emma Duggleby,
Kerry Smith, who played in the 2002 Curtis Cup match, and
Sophie Walker, beaten semi-finalist in this year's British
women's open amateur championship at Gullane.
The five new caps are: Lisa Ball, Naomi Edwards, Stirling
University student Alex Marshall, Julie Ross and Faye Sanderson.
The team to be captained by Beverley New is:
LISA BALL Matfen Hall
EMMA DUGGLEBY Malton & Norton
NAOMI EDWARDS Ganton
ALEX MARSHALL Burghley Park
JULIE ROSS Whitley Bay
FAYE SANDERSON Heworth (Durham)
KERRY SMITH Waterlooville

McKEVITT WINS FRILFORD HEATH SALVER
Curtis Cup player Shelley McKevitt, pictured right, from Reading
will be bidding to retain the British women's open amateur
stroke-play championship at Alwoodley, Leeds next week.
Her current form in Wednesday's Frilford Heather Golf Club's
Scratch Salver 36-hole open tournament indicates that she
has run into for at just the right time to make a bold defence
of the title.
Shelley, who is also the reigning New Zealand open amateur
match-play champion, had scores of 68 and 71 for a total of
139 and a one-shot win from Tracy Atkin who was an England
international player in 1985 and won
the St Rule Trophy at St Andrews in 1986.

SCOTS MEN WIN STUDENTS TITLE BUT WOMEN BEATEN BY ENGLISH
Afternoon lightning in the area brought a premature end to
the British universities home golf internationals, leaving
Scotland as winners of the men's title and England winners
of the women's title for the first time at
Nefyn & District Golf Club, North Wales today (WED).
The singles were played in the morning because the post-lunch
weather forecast was not good and, sure enough, play in the
foursomes had to be abandoned around 4pm when the organisers
had no option but to call the
players in and abandon the rest of the tournament because
of lightning.
The Scottish Universities' men's team beat their English counterparts
5 1/2-2 1/2 in the singles-only match with wins by Jed Moore,
Stewart Elder, Mark Hillson, Ali Love and Robert McGregor.
Richard Hooper gained a halved match. The previous day the
Scottish team had beaten Wales who had lost to English universities
on the first day.
The Scottish Universities women's team - containing two English-born
students at Stirling, Alex Marshall and Olivia Briggs - started
off well against their English counterparts but eventually
lost 3 1/2-2 1/2
The tail of the English Universities' women's team wagged
furiously to gain
3pt out of three at the end of the morning with wins by Julie
Ross, Faye Sanderson and Sophie Walker.
Earlier Alex Marshall and Olivia Briggs had won the top two
ties for the Scottish team and Anne Ramsay had gained a halved
match.

GILLIAN PIPPED ON THE POST AT SOUTHPORT & AINSDALE
Former European Ladies Tour star Gillian Stewart, now based
in her native Inverness and building up reputation as a golf
coach, showed she had not lost all her old tournament skills
by finishing runner-up in the WPGA Glenmuir championship at
Southport & Ainsdale.
Gillian shot rounds of 71 and 74 for a three-under-par total
of 145, being pipped at the very last hole for the title and
£1,000 first prize by Alison Gray from Ormskirk who
shot 74 and 70 for 144.
Alison, who was a member at Southport & Ainsdale as an
amateur, putted "like a dream" to birdie the fourth, sixth,
seventh, 11th and 14th in her second round and draw level
with Gillian.
Tied playing the last hole, Miss Stewart was bunkered off
the tee and could.only splash out. She finished with a bogey
to Mrs Gray's two-putt par from 25ft. Gillian's runner-up
prize was £800.
"I'm delighted with the way I played and disappointed not
to have gone all the way. It's a great course and takes a
bit of knowing. This is a title I'd love to win. This is only
its econd year but I am sure it is a WPGA tournament that
will grow as the numbers of women club and teaching pros increases.
I'm looking forward already to next year's championship at
Woodhall Spa," said Gillian.
Alison Gray was pregnant when she won the inaugural title
at St Andrews Bay last year and she was able to bring along
her baby daughter Georgia to Southport & Ainsdale.

FOUR
NEW CAPS IN SCOTLAND WOMEN'S TEAM
The Scotland team for the women's home golf internationals
at Royal Porthcawl from September 8 to 10 includes four new
caps - 15-year Krystle Caithness (St Regulus), 17-year-old
Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle), 20-year-old Jenna Wilson (Strathaven)
and 39-year-old Martine Pow (Selkirk).
Krystle is the holder of the Scottish Under-16 and Under-18
girls' championships.
Kylie won the Scottish schoolgirls championship last year
when Jenna Wilson won the Scottish Under-21 girls' title.
Martine, pictured right, champion of the Borders umpteen times,
has reached the semi-finals of the Scottish women's championship
for the past two years.
Jenna Wilson and Heather MacRae (Dunblane New) are students
at San Diego State University, California, and will be returning
to their studies after Porthcawl.
There are four changes from the side which went close to winning
the title at Cruden Bay last September - Lesley Mackay (Royal
Dornoch) has turned pro while Pamela Feggans (Doon Valley),
Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) and Laura Wells (Dumfries &
Co) were not available for selection.
The team, to be captained by former Scotland champion Fiona
Anderson (Formby Ladies), now based in Manchester, is:
Krystle Caithness (St Regulus)
Lynn Kenny (Stirling Univ & Dunblane New)
Anne Laing (Vale of Leven)
Heather MacRae (Dunblane New)
Martine Pow (Selkirk)
Clare Queen (Drumpellier)

Jenna Wilson (Strathaven).

4 Sara Bishop (Windyhill).
Lynsey
aims to organise Edinburgh University Womens Golf
Aberdeenshire Ladies member Lynsey Johnston, pictured right,
is Edinburgh University's new women's golf captain - and she
is taking the job very seriously indeed.
"I want to introduce some sort of organisation to what has
previously been a very loose arrangement for girl students
wanting to golf," said Lynsey.
"Quite a few of the girls don't have handicaps and can't afford
to become members of golf clubs in the Edinburgh area. I'm
investigating what I can do about that.
"Then I want to organise competitions for them so that we
can enter teams that can do well in the Scottish Universities
women's league."
Lynsey's father John, a Royal Aberdeen member, played for
Scotland in the home internationals of 1970 and 1971.
Lynsey is on a four-year course at Edinburgh University, of
which Moray College is a part, to gain physical education
qualifications.

JANE
PARK WINS UNITED STATES WOMEN'S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Jane Park, pictured right, 17-year-old member of this year's
winning United States Curtis Cup team at Formby, won the US
Women's Amateur championship at The Kahkwa
Club, Erie in Pennysylvania on Sunday.
The 36-hole final, watched by a gallery of some 4,000 spectators,
went all the way before Jane, from Rancho Cucamonga, California,
won by two holes over 20-year-old Amanda McCurdy from El Diablo,
Arkansas and a student at the University of Arkansas.
Jane, who lost in last year's final, was all square after
18 holes but had moved into a three-hole lead after 23 holes
and Amanda never looked like pulling her back.
The tell-tale statistics were in the driving department. Amanda
hit only nine of 15 fairways in the morning and even fewer
in the afternoon - only six. In comparison, Jane hit 11 fairways
in the morning and 13 in the afternoon.
Strangely enough, the loser hit more greens in regulation
- 14 in the morning and 14 in the afternoon. Jane hit 11 before
lunch and 13 in the second round.
Both putted well. Jane Park required only 28 putts in each
round. Amanda McCurdy had 29 putts in the first and 30 in
the second.
"I never forgot that after I lost to Virada Nirapathpongporn
in last year's final, she whispered in my ear at the prizegiving
ceremony that it would be my turn next year," said Jane.

Katie Thomson (Kintore) won the Aberdeenshire girls' August

of last year's Bank of Scotland Young Masters' girls' title
at Gleneagles, and Sjavon Wilson (Murcar) who sets off on
Wednesday with Claire McNeil (Cawder) to enrol at Tyler College,
Texas.

Nicole Perrot from Vina del Mar, Chile won the Albany Futures
Classic at Capital Hills, Albany in New York State with scores
of 69, 69 and 65 for 10-under-par total of 203. She won the

of the victorious US Curtis Cup team at Formby in June, finished
third on 207 with 71, 68 and 68.
Kent-born Australian Lindsey Wright tied for 19th place on
213 wit scores of 71, 71 and 71.
Former Scottish amateur champion Linzi Morton from Alloa missed
the delayed 36-hole cut by three shots with a two-round total
of 150 (73 and 77). Thosewith 147 and better went out again
on the third and final day.
Jimin Kang (Seoul) is the leading money-winner on the US Futures

two. Lindsey Wright is next on the money table with $38,893
from 13 events, of which she has won two.

Riccarton
Rosebowl
Former Scotland cap Claire Hargan (Prestonfield), pictured
right, won the Riccarton Rosebowl 36-hole women's open in
a tight finish at Hamilton Golf Club today.
Edinburgh based Claire shot rounds of 75 and 70 (against the
CSS of 74 and 73) for a final total of 145 - one shot ahead
of Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) and Lynn Kenny (Stirling University).
Former Scottish champion Lynn Kenny was the first round leader
with a 73 but whereas she was able only to duplicate that
score second time round, Claire Hargan's 70 propelled her
from two shots in arrears to victory. Louise Kenney had scores
of 74 and 72.

Futures Tour
LINZI LIKELY TO MISS THE CUT
Twenty-two players had still to complete their second rounds
when the Albany Futures Tour Classic entered its third day
at Capital Hills, Albany in New York State on Sunday morning.
The first round was not wrapped up until Saturday morning
because of bad weather and the knock-on effect was that the
field ran out of daylight before everyone could get round
a second time.
Former Scottish champion Linzi Morton from Alloa did complete
her second round but it was a six-over-par 77 for a 36-hole
total of eight-over-par 150, which is very unlikely to be
good enough to see her participate in the
third and final round.
The cut cannot be made officially until the 22 players have
posted their second-round scores.
Leader in the clubhouse is Nicole Perrot from Chile with a
pair of 69s for four-under-par 138.
She is one ahead of five players, who include Curtis Cup player-cum-rooki
pro Erica Blasberg from California. She shot 71 and 68 for
139.

British
Boys Championship
SCOT JORDAN WINS BRITISH BOYS GOLF TITLE
Jordan Findlay, pictured right, from Fraserburgh has followed
in the recent footsteps of fellow Scots Steven Young, Steven
O'Hara and David Inglis by winning the British boys' golf
championship.
The 16-year-old from the North-east of Scotland beat Thomas
Sherreard from Kent by 2 and 1 in the 36-hole final at Conwy,
North Wales.
Although Young, O'Hara and Inglis were established front-line
Under-18 players when they won the title, Findlay's success
has come out of the blue. He has yet to win a Scottish boys'
stroke-play or match-play title although he has a very promising
record in his own area.
Jordan beat fellow Scot Paul O'Hara in the semi-final and
that gave him the confidence boost, if he needed it, to hang
on in there in the final when he was twice three down.
At the end of the first round, Findlay was two down to Sherreard
but the balance of power shifted the Scot's way when he won
the 23rd, 24th and 25th with pars to square the match and
then took the lead for the first time with a par at the long
27th.
Sherreard got back on terms by winning the 31st but Findlay
edged ahead again at the 32nd and went two up with two to
play by winning the 34th. At half at the 35th gave Jordan
the coveted title by a 2 and 1 margin.
Scottish
Golf Union president Hugh Hunter who walked every hole of
the final said: "I'm proud of Jordan. What an achievement
by a lad who must have been ranked one of the outsiders for
the title at the beginning of the week. But he came into the
championship with a bit of form, having taken four points
out of six in the boys' home internationals and he was certainly
not overawed by the occasion when it came to the final."
US Womens' Amateur
THREE CURTIS CUPPERS IN US WOMEN'S AMATEUR SEMI-FINALS
Three members of this year's victorious United States' Curtis
Cup team at Formby are through to Saturday's semi-finals of
the US Women's Amateur championship over a 6,365yd par-72
course at the Kahkwa Club, Erie in Pennsylvania.
Paula Creamer (18) from Pleasanton, California; Sarah Huarte
(22) from Shingle Springs, California, and Jane Park (17)
from Rancho Cucamonga, California have underlined the strength
of the 2004 US line-up by fighting
their way through to the last four.
Paula will now play Amanda McCurdy, a 20-year-old from El
Dorado, Arkansas. Sarah Huarte will play Jane Park in the
other semi-final. Jane Park was beaten in last year's 36-hole
final.
Michelle Wie, the 14-year-old prodigy from Honolulu, Hawaii,
was beaten in the second round by Korean-born In-Bee Park,
a 16-year-old from Henderson, Nevada.
Michelle was two up after 15 holes but made her exit - a loser
by one hole - when she three-putted the 18th green from 15ft.
Fututes Tour
LINZI BEATS THE RAIN TO THE CLUBHOUSE
Former Scottish amateur champion Linzi Morton from Alloa returned
a two-over-par 73 before torrential rain flooded the course
and ended play for the day prematurely in the Albany Classic
women's professional golf tournament, the latest event on
the United States Futures Tour, over the Capital Hills course
at Albany, New York State.
Linzi had halves of 35 and 38 to be four shots behind clubhouse
leader Sing Ah Kim from Seoul, Korea whose 69 was made up
of 33 and 36.
Rachel Bailey (Australia) and Julie Twede from Copenhagen
were on 70. Half of the field still have to complete their
first rounds in the 54-hole event.
Irish Inter-Provincials
EILEEN ROSE POWER MISSES OUT ON IRISH INTER-PROVINCIALS
Munster will be missing their most experienced player when
they defend the Irish Inter-provincial Championship at Ballybunion
from August 18 to 20.
Former Curtis Cup player Eileen Rose Power has been forced
to withdraw with back problems and will be replaced by Heather
Nolan, who played a major role in Ireland’s sensational
victory over England to win the Home International Championship
at Cruden Bay last September.
The Southerners will be seeking a hat-trick of titles for
the first time in the series and will have six of the side
that won in Galway last year.
Two newcomers are Girls’ International and Connacht
Senior champion Catherine Tucker and Pamela Murphy, formerly
with the Island in Dublin but now playing out of Ennis. Curtis
Cup star Claire Coughlan and Vagliano and Irish international
Tricia Mangan are also in the team.
Captain Bridget Gleeson Healy is looking forward to completing
the hat-trick in her home county.
Leinster has dominated the championship since 1964 with a
total of 25 outright victories. Munster has five titles and
Ulster four. Their historic eight-in-a-row was brought to
end by Munster in 2002 but Leinster captain Therese O’Reilly
said, "it is time for the trophy to come back to Leinster.
We have a great team and the players are hungry."
There are six internationals on the team for Ballybunion including
four from last year’s home internationals victory at
Cruden Bay. They are Tara Delaney, winner of the Irish Open
Stroke-play and Lancôme Girls’ Close championships
and runner-up to Deirdre Smith in the Lancôme Ladies’
Close; Maura Morrin, holder of the Leinster title, Maria Dunne
and Sinead Keane.
The other two are Deirdre Smith, the reigning Lancôme
Irish Ladies’ Close champion, and Martina Gillen, Close
champion in 2003. The team is completed by teenagers Karen
Delaney and Rachel Cassidy.
Ulster travels with four experienced players and four newcomers.
They will be led by provincial champion and current international
Helen Jones but will be without girls’ international
Nikki Taggart who is taking up a golf scholarship in America.
Sisters Shauna and girl international Danielle, Joanne Black
and Angela Kilmartin are the newcomers.
Connacht has yet to win the title but captain Susan McGann
O’Brien said "We have a great team and will travel to
Ballybunion with a positive, upbeat attitude."
They have the nucleus of the team that made history for the
province by winning the Girls’ Inter-provincial Championship
for the first time last April.
New caps Fiona Carroll, Sinead O’Sullivan and Emma Gilmore
were in the Irish Girls’ International team at Strathaven
and Niamh Kitching returns to the squad.
Also included are former internationals Deirdre Walsh and
Darragh McGowan, both of whom have been in good form this
year.

Strathtyrum Trophy, St Andrews
DARIA BENEFITS FROM CHANGE OF FORMAT
Russian Daria Anisimova from Moscow City won the St Andrews
Links' women's open tournament for the Strathtyrum Trophy
over the Eden Course on Friday.
She added a CSS-matching score of 72 to her first-round 77
for a three-stroke win with an aggregate of 149.
Holly Aitchison (Bedfordshire) was runner-up with 75 and 77
for 153 - one shot ahead of Karen Marshall (Baberton) and
Laura Collin (John O'Gaunt).
It is interesting to ponder whether Miss Anisimova would have
won the Strathtyrum Trophy, had the original stroke-play/match-play
format remained in place. The qualifying round scores and
the match-play programme scrapped when bad weather meant it
would have been impossible to complete it within the scheduled
time.
Daria Anismova had scores of 83 and 95 for 178 in the qualifying
rounds. Had the match-play gone ahead, she would have been
the 23rd of the 32 qualifiers.
Her form in the substitute 36-hole medal-play competition
left her earlier standard well behind.
And what about Ann Ramsay, the Scottish universities champion
from Kirriemuir? She would have been the No 1 seed for the
match-play with scores of 73 and 78 for 151 - three shots

English Under 13 and Under 15 Championships
HENRIETTA AND KELLY TAKE TITLES
Henrietta Brockway (Yeovil) won the English Under-15 girls'
championship at Harrogate - changed to a three-round stroke-play
event when continuing bad weather meant the normal match-play
format could not be completed.
Henrietta, last year's Under-13 title-winner and good enough
to have played for England in the Under-18 girls' home internationals
at Strathaven this week, had rounds of 70, 70 and 74 for a
final aggregate of 214 - 15 strokes ahead of Gemma Hardie
(Forest Pines).
Kelly Tidy (Manchester), the leading qualifier, beat Raphaela
Dywer (Hayling) in the final of the Under-13 championship.

FAME ENDS AMATEUR CAREER WITH A TITLE
Fame More (Chesterfield), a member of this year's Great Britain
& Ireland Curtis Cup team, won the English women's mid-amateur
championship at Moor Park Golf Club on Friday.
She beat Kerry Smith (Waterlooville), who was a team-mate
of Fame's in the 2002 Curtis Cup match at Fox Chapel, Pittsburg,
by 2 and 1 in the 18-hole final.
This is expected to be Fame's last appearance as an amateur
golfer. She failed to get through the Qualifying School to
the European Ladies' Tour last year but is going to have another
go.
In the semi-finals, Kerry Smith beat Faye Sanderson (Heworth)
at the 19th while Fame beat Julie Ross (Whitley Bay) on the
16th green.
In the final, Fame was two holes up after three, having birdied
the second and the third. All the holes were then halved until
Kerry won the 16th, Fame having bunkered her drive and Kerry
making a good recovery from the trees.
At the 17th, Kerry took three to get on the green after being
blocked out of a direct shot at the green by a tree. Fame
was on in two.
Final (18 holes): Fame More (Chesterfield) beat Kerry Smith
(Waterlooville) 2 and 1.

Clubgolf news
Clubgolf, Scotland's national junior golf strategy, developed
as a direct result of the Scottish Executive's commitment
to introduce every nine-year-old child to the game by 2009,
has appointed its sixth and final member of its development
team.
Susie Kidd from Aberdeen has been assigned the role of clubgolf
Grampian Regional Manager, to pilot the area's national programme
in readiness for its role out in 2009. Work in the area has
already begun. Ten volunteer coaches from four local clubs
have completed their PGA clubgolf Level 1 Training for Volunteers
course and are ready to help teach the game to youngsters
from their communities. Susie joins a six strong development
team.
In addition to regional development work, each has a separate
task of tackling an issue facing the sport. These range from
social inclusion to developing links between schools and clubs.
The Grampian position carries with it the responsibility for
attracting and retaining double the current number of female
players in Scotland. The promotion of "Girls in Golf"
in Scotland is a critical role. Currently, there are 198,500
registered male club golfers in Scotland, but fewer than 50,000
females.
The average age of the Scottish golfer is now 55. In the under
18 level, there are 25,000 boys but just 2,700 girls. This
is not a challenge facing only golf. Most other sports in
Britain find it hard to attract and retain female participants.
According to Women's Sports Foundation UK, girls as young
as seven begin to show negative attitudes towards sport; 40%
of young women have dropped out of physical activity by the
age of 18; and only 10% of women and 35% of girls are members
of a club where they can take part in sport. This new clubgolf
appointment seeks to redress the boy/girl imbalance. The target
is to double the number of girls involved in golf by the year
2009.
Susie Kidd certainly has an empathy with her target audience.
Since first swinging a club, aged 13, at Edzell Golf Club
there have been few interruptions in her progress and she
has a burning passion for the sport. She has a handicap of
four and has been women's club champion five times at Portlethen
Golf Club."As a girl I was aware that golf seemed like
a sport for men. I was very fortunate because my father and
two brothers were all keen golfers and when I started playing
there were three girls at my school who already played,"
said Susie.
"It certainly encourages you to keep playing if you have
a big peer group of girls in the club and that will be our
aim for clubs across Scotland."I found it was a game
with a high skill base so as a girl it was a good leveller
and it was something at which I could shine. Golf has given
me fitness and health. It has taught me discipline as well
as winning and losing."This new role will give me the
opportunity to put something back into a sport which has given
me so much. I'm delighted to have been given this opportunity
and look forward to help making an impact."
English Womens Mid-Amateur

Golf Club, Hertfordshire.

STRATHAVEN START IN DOUBT BECAUSE OF FLOODING
WEDNESDAY morning's start of the three-day girls' home golf
internationals series at Strathaven Golf Club could be delayed
after several hours of rain flooded parts of the Lanarkshire
course on Tuesday.
"We've made contingency plans to complete the six matches
between Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales over the three
days, including scrapping the foursomes on any day if we have
to," said Susan Simpson, the Ladies Golf Union championship
secretary.
Using last week's individual performances in the British girls'
open championship at Lanark as a yardstick, England start
favourites to win the title for the fifth year in a row.
The prospects of a very young Scotland team captained by Jenny
Jenkins being crowned Under-18 champions for the first time
since Mullingar in 1998 have been diminished by the withdrawal
of Kelly Brotherton (Tulliallan), Scottish girls' champion
last year and beaten finalist this year, and the possible
unavailability of Roseanne Niven (Crieff) due to illness.
Kelly's place was taken by Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze)
but if Roseanne also has to withdraw, skipper Jenkins will
have only seven players instead of eight at her disposal.
"If Roseanne is advised by her doctor not to play, I'm
afraid that Scotland will not be able to call up their next
reserve in line, Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) because the
rules of the championship state that any substitute must be
nominated before 24hr of the time fixed for the first match.
That deadline has passed," said Mrs Simpson.
Scotland will play Wales and Ireland face England in the opening
day's programme - weather permitting. Carly Booth from Auchterarder
and Sally Watson (Elie & Earlsferry), age 12 and 13 respectively,
will be making their debuts for Scotland in the foursomes.

SPANIARD
WINS BRITISH GIRLS OPEN TITLE
By Colin Farquharson
Spains 16-year-old Azahara Munoz from Malaga, won the
British girls' open amateur championship in impressive style
at sunny Lanark Golf Club today (SUNDAY).
She beat 17-year-old Valentine Derrey from Nevilly-sur-Seine,
France by 4 and 2 in the 18-hole final.
Azahara, last years European Young Masters girls
title-winner and a plus 2 player at Guadalmina Golf Club,
took a grip on the match with three birdies in a row from
the third to be three up on the sixth tee.
Valentine,
who plays off one of a handicap at Paris Saint Cloud Golf
Club, went four down with a bogey at the seventh. The French
girl, the ninth of the 32 qualifiers for the match-play stages,
won only two holes in the final, the ninth and the 13th and
she had to produce a birdie on each occasion.
Miss Munoz, the No. 3 qualifier, was three under par when
the final finished on the 16th green. She had the current
European Young Masters girls' champion, 14-year-old Carlota
Ciganda from Spain, as her caddie after Carlota, the No 2
seed, unexpectedly lost in the second round.
Azahara won the Spanish women's championship when she was
only 14.
In all Spain had 20 representatives in the championship at
Lanark

Jodi Ewart from Yorkshire. The 16-year-old Catterick player

Scotland's only two top-flight qualifiers - Krystle Caithness
(St Regulus) and Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle) - were beaten
in the first round of the match-play stages of the British
girls' open amateur golf championship at Lanark Golf Club
yesterday (Friday).
The only home player with an active interest in the tournament
is 13-year-old Edinburgh girl Sally Watson who has reached
the semi-finals of the Second Flight competition for the Todd

A member at Elie and Earlsferry Golf Club, Fife, Sally beat
Scottish girls international team-mate Clare-Marie Carlton
(Fereneze) by one hole in the first round and then had a good
4 and 2 victory over Monique Huijsman (Netherlands) in the

through a play-off which began on Thursday night.
Some five hours later Krystle was out of the championship
- beaten 5 and 3 by the No 1 seed Katrina Holford (Ingestre

chance of providing an upset result at that point. But the
English girl never looked back after going two up after 12
holes.
Kylie, last year's Scottish schoolgirls champion, was beaten
4 and 2 by Sonia Cologan (Spain) after losing five of the

again battled on to win by one hole over Spain's Carolina
Andrade and now meets defending champion Marianne Skarpnord
(Norway) for a place in the semi-final.

at Lanark.
Some five hours later Krystle was out of the championship

still chasing the three places left in the championship draw.
Krystle, a member of the St Regulus club, St Andrews, secured
the first one with a birdie at the second hole; Victoria Stefansen
grabbed the second with a par at the third.
That meant it was down to a straight fight between young Sally
Watson and Araceli Felgueroso for the final place. The Spanish
player won it with a par at the fourth hole.
Krystle Caithness's "reward" was a tie with the
No 1 qualifier, Katrina Holford from Staffordshire who had
the same leading total of 144 as Spain's Carlota Ciganda and
Azahara Munoz but was seeded No 1 on the strength of her better
second round - a 71 to a pair of 74s.
Sally Watson's consolation prize was No 2 seeding in the Second
Flight match-play for the Todd Bowl in which she met fellow
Scot Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze) in the first round.
There are only two Scots in the championship draw - Krystle
Caithness and Kylie Walker (Buchanan Castle) who qualified
in No 25 place and meets Sonia Cologan (Spain) in the first
round.
The only other Scot still actively involved in the tournament
was Lesley Hendry (Routenburn), in the Todd Bowl with a first-round
tie against Jennifer Weiler (Germany).

RAIN HITS VETS AT STRATHMORE
>From COLIN FARQUHARSON
Heavy rain forced a 4hr suspension of play at Strathmore Golf
Centre, Perthshire yesterday (Wed) on the second day of the

the the Scottish National Final at Prestwick St Nicholas on
the Friday 1st October 2004 and who will all form the "Renfrewshire

The Silver Division was won by Denise Parr (Cowglen) with

AMY WAS BORN THE SAME YEAR AS CARDROSS GOLF CLUB
Amy Batchelor was born in the same year as Cardross Golf Club
- 1904,
so no wonder that the club celebrated the 100th birthday of
their oldest member.
Amy was driven around the course by course manager Davy Gall
and was then joined in the clubhouse
by members of the ladies' section to enjoy a splendid buffet
to mark the occasion.
Amy was presented with flowers by the lady and senior members
and
also a special crystal centenary jug from the Ladies Section.

KELLY OUT, CLARE-MARIE IN
Tulliallan's Kelly Brotherton has withdrawn from this week's
British girls' open golf championship at Lanark and also from
the Scotland team for next week's girls' home internationals
at Strathaven. No reason has been given.
Her place in the Scots team goes to first reserve Clare-Marie
Carlton (Fereneze), this year's Scottish schoolgirls champion.
Withdrawals from the British girls' open championship have
meant the calling up from the reserve list of three Scots
- Rachael Livingstone (Musselburgh Old), Sally Watson (Elie
& Earslferry Ladies) and Nicola Melville (Bridge of Allan).

SCOTS BID FOR TITLE HAT-TRICK AT STRATHMORE
Scotland will be bidding to win the Miller Stirling Trophy
for the third year in a row when the Veteran Ladies Golf Association
area team championship is contested over the next three days
at Strathmore Golf Centre, near Alyth.
Three"new" faces in skipper Joan Marshall's line-up
are Lorna Bennett (Ladybank), a former Scotland women's international
team player, who has now reached the minimum age of 50 for
veterans' golf, Cecilia Kenny (Dunblane New), mother of former
Scottish women's champion Lynn Kenny and herself winner of
the Scottish veteran women's title at Blairgowrie last October,
and Karen Ballantyne (Craigmillar Park), winner of last year's
Scottish seniors' title at Ballater.
After beating the Scots last year, England South lost out
in a games-up countback tie-breaker for the title. With Chris
Stirling (Hampshire), the English senior match-play champion
in their side, they will fancy their chances of going one
better.
The Scotland v South match today will go a long way towards
deciding the destination of the Miller Stirling Trophy this
year.
Last year Scotland had the "player of the tournament"
in former Scottish girls champion Moira Thomson (North Berwick)
who won all her six matches.
England North and England Midlands complete the four-cornered
contest.
The programme is:
Tuesday - Midlands v North, Scotland v South.
Wednesday -Midlands v Scotland, South v North.
Thursday - South v Midlands, Scotland v North.

Press Release
GIRLS BRITISH OPEN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Competitors with handicaps ranging from +3 to 6 will be hoping
to lift the Challenge Cup, the trophy awarded to the winner
of the Girls British Open Amateur Championship to be
played at Lanark Golf Club from 4th to 8th August.
It is perhaps indicative of the continual improvement in standards
that both of last years finalists will be competing
at Lanark. Last year at Newport it was Marianne Skarpnord,
a +1 player from Norway who emerged with the trophy after
her 2/1 win over Beatriz Recari of Spain.
In recent years Continental players have dominated the Championship
and since 1995 Scottish player Clare Queen has been the only
interruption in the unbroken sequence of foreign winners.
Home based players will have a tough task on their hands with
half the field of 120 represented by top overseas girl golfers.
Home hopes could rest with Felicity Johnson, a +2 player from
Harbourne; with Krystle Caithness, the Scottish Under-18 and
Under-16 champion and with Tara Delaney, the winner this year
of the Irish Girls title.
Competitors play one round on each of the first two days and
the lowest 32 scores over 36-holes then compete in the match
play leading to the 18-hole final on Sunday 8th August.
£115
for a round over Old Course in 2005
The cost of a round of golf over the Old Course, St Andrews
will rise from pounds 110 to pounds £115 for the "high
season" - mid-April to mid-October - next year.
The St Andrews Links Management Committee also decided on
a "low season" - November to March when fairways
mats are compulsory - increase of pounds 4 (up from pounds
52 to pounds 56).
A new "shoulder season" will be introduced next
year, covering the first half of April and the second half
of October. The green fee for the Old Course for those weeks,
when fairways mat will not be in use, will be pounds £80.
"By offering a lower green fee at the beginning and at
the end of the tourist season, we hope to help boost tourism
business in the town at traditionally quiet times of the year.
The high season adult green fee on the New Course will remain
at pounds 55 and will be matched by the new green fee for
trhe Jubilee Course (pounds 55 from pounds 50).
Green fees for the Eden and Strathtyrum courses are to rise
next spring for the first time in three years. The adult green
fees in high season will be pounds 33 and pounds 22 respectively.

Calling all East Lothian Girls
East Lothian Junior Convenor, David Warren, writes
"The East Lothian Junior League is running its Championship
on Friday the 6th August at Haddington. Players must be permanently
resident in East Lothian. This is a Scratch and Handicap competition
for Girls and Boys and there is a section for the Under 13s
Girls and Boys, for the 12 member Clubs of the League. ELDC
sponsor the event and have donated £1000 towards prize
vouchers.
"I depend on Convenors to let me have the names of 4
players, one in each of the 4 categories Boys Scratch, Boys
Handicap, Girls, and Under 13s. I am slightly disappointed
that I only have about 7 girls entered - you may know the
names - the draw will appear on the website tomorrow.

Could you please try to encourage some more girls to play?
