IN-BEE PARK WINS ORANGE BOWL JUNIOR TITLE BY FOUR STROKES

players failed to fill any of the top placings in either the boys' or
girls' sections of the 39th Orange Bowl junior international golf championship
- one of the leading events on the world calendar of Under-18 tournaments
_ at Biltmore Golf Club, Coral Gables in Florida on Monday.
The top boy was Benjamin Alvarado, right, from Santiago, Chile with a
72-hole total of five-under-par 279. Alvarado, who came to the front with
a third-round 67, signed off with a par 71 to finish two shots ahead of
Hydedong Kim from Seoul Korea.
Four shots behind the winner in third-place was Pablo Martin from Malaga,
the Spanish teenager who won the British boys' open championship in 2001.
Pablo started with a 69 and finished with a 69. His second and third rounds
of 73 and 72 cost him the prestigious championship.
 The
girls' title went to In-Bee Park, left, the Korean-born player who won
the United States girls' title at the age of 14 during the past summer.
In-Bee, who moved to Florida with her parents last year, had four strokes
to spare at the top of the leaderboard with a four-round total of four-under-par
284, made up of scores of 72, 73, 68 and 71 against the ladies' par of
72.
Spain's Elisa Serramia and Emma Cabrera filled second and third places
respectively on 288 and 289.
In-Bee (the name means "Good Queen" in her native tongue) might
well have triumphed in any case but her task was certainly made easier
when Paula Creamer from California, winner by a runaway margin of the
Doral-Publix Junior Classic in Florida the previous week, was confined
to bed with influenza after a brilliant first round score of seven-under-par
65.
No Great Britain & Ireland players were entered for the girls' event.
The English Golf Union nominated Matthew Richardson (Pinner Hill) and
Michael Skelton (Redcar) while the Welsh Golf Union sent Edinburgh-born
Rhys Davies (Royal Porthcawl), beaten at the 37th hole of the British
boys championship final at Carnoustie this year.
Richardson was steadiness personified with scores of 71, 71 72 and 70
- against the par of 71 - to finish joint fourth on level par 284.
Davies tied for eighth place on 288 with scores of 71, 71, 74 and 72.
Skelton, potentially another Justin Rose in the making, did not have one
of his better tournaments. He finished joint 24th in a field of 63 with
scores of 70 76, 72 and 75 for nine-over-par 293.
There was one other English boy in the competition, Seve Benson from Surrey.
He tied for 50th place on 306.
Almost certainly for the first time three members of the same family took
part in the championship - Rafael, Miguel and Emma Cabrera from Spain.
Entries for the Orange Bowl junior international golf championship are
by invitation only - usually extended to national federations to nominate
worthy representatives, although there is a qualifying competition earlier
in the month with only a handful of the leaders going through to the championship.
