MIDLOTHIAN WOMEN'S COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

LEADING QUALIFIER BELINDA TAKES TITLE FOR SECOND TIME

PRESTONFIELD player Belinda Murphy, the 2000 title-winner, regained the Midlothian County Ladies Golf Association championship at Duddingston. She beat another past champion, Paula Silver (Gullane), by 4 and 2 in the final.

Belinda showed her form right at the start of the championship by heading the match-play qualifiers with a round of 76, one ahead of Karen Marshall (Baberton).

Defending champion Fiona Hunter (Baberton) made it through in 16th position but her title reign ended in the first round when she lost by one hole to Belinda Murphy.

Paula Silver had taken a six-month break from golf before returning to action in the qualifying round. She did well to get so far in the championship.

In the final, Belinda was never quite pulled back to square after winning the third and sixth holes. Two up at the turn, Belinda increased her lead to three at the 10th where her opponent three-putted. Paula Silver's best spell in the final came when she won the 12th and 13th holes to narrow the deficit to only one hole but it was so far and no further as far as she was concerned. Paula three-putted to lose the 14th and then lost both the next two holes and the match by 4 and 2 when she was in trouble off the tee at the 15th and 16th and had to concede both to Belinda.
