SARA HARMAN SURPRISE RENFREW TITLE WINNER

GLASGOW Western Infirmary physiotherapist Sara Harman was the surprise winner of the Renfrewshire women's county golf championship in an almost gale-force wind at Renfrew Golf Club yesterday (Friday).

Devon-born Sara, a 25-year-old member at Williamwood Golf Club after graduating at St Andrews University, scored her first upset victory in the morning semi-finals when she ended the bid by defending champion and leading qualifier Donna Jackson (Cochrane Castle) to win the title for a ninth time. Sara beat her by 2 and 1.

Sara, the No 4 qualifier, proved it was no fluke by then winning the final tie against former Scottish junior international Karen Fitzgerald, the Turnberry ladies captain and second seed, by one hole . It was the second year in a row that Karen had lost in the final.

Fitzgerald led twice on the outward half but the match was all square at the turn. Harman went ahead for the first time at the 10th and doubled her advantage at the next hole.
Karen won back the 12th, only to fall two down again at the 13th.
After three successive halves, Fitzgerald cut her deficit to one by taking the 17th but the 18th hole was halved, leaving Sara Harman the title winner in her debut appearance in the final.

Karen had beaten Carol Whyte (Williamwood) 5 and 4 in the second semi-final.
On the opening day, Donna Jackson had headed the qualifiers with a round of 79, two over the CSS for the day and two ahead of Karen Fitzgerald (Turnberry) and three clear of Jennifer Mack (Haggs Castle) in a field of 51.

The best net score was a 74 off 14 by Moira Hogg (Old Ranfurly). She won the Peggy Clark Trophy.
