Aberdeenshire win North Division title

Winning team - Aberdeenshire
Winners - Aberdeenshire

ABERDEENSHIRE staged a last-day singles charge to come from behind to win the North Division women's inter-county team golf championship at windy Glenisla, Alyth yesterday (Monday).
They beat Perth & Kinross 6 1/2-2 1/2 to finish the three-day programme with three wins out of three. Defending champions Northern Counties, who beat Angus 7 1/2-1 1/2, were runners-up with two wins.
It was Shire's first overall victory since Lossiemouth in 1997 and sends them on the long trip to Portpatrick Dunskey for the Scottish county finals from September 20 to 22. They join Dunbartonshire & Argyll and Border Counties. The four-team line-up will be completed tomorrow (Wed) with the conclusion of the East Division inter-county tournament at Haddington.
Although they had beaten Northern Counties and Angus on the first two days of the tournament, Aberdeenshire were in a tricky situation after yesterday morning's foursomes when they trailed 2-1 to Perth & Kinross.
If they failed to retrive the situation in the afternoon singles, Aberdeenshire might well have been pipped for the trophy by Northern Counties on a countback of the individual games.
But captain Pat Wilson's team put the issue beyond doubt by winning the singles 5 1/2-1/2.
Aberdeenshire's most successful players over the three days were Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies) and Lyndsey Devenish (Cruden Bay), with 4 1/2 pts each from six ties.
Christine Middleton (Cruden Bay) made a very good comeback to county golf by winning the four ties she played.
Northern Counties will be rueing their opening-day defeat by Aberdeenshire. They went on to score big wins over Perth & Kinross and Angus but the damage had been done. Northern Counties had the "player of the tournament" in New Zealander Liz McKinnon who won five of her six games.
