CLARE STILL QUEEN OF LANARK GOLF
DOUBLE British girls champion Clare Queen from Drumpellier repeated the
victory last year's victory in the Lanarkshire women's county golf championship
at Bothwell Castle. Twelve months ago that win set the ball rolling for
Clare in a season which would see her win both the British girls' match-play
and stroke-play titles.
Clare, only a few days short of her 19th birthday, beat another teenager,17-year-old
Jenna Wilson (Strathaven) by 4 and 3 in the morning semi-final and then
won the title for the second year in a row with a 2 and 1 win over Lesley
Lloyd (Hayston) in the final. Miss Lloyd, the 1997 champion, had the better
of the outward half and established a two-hole lead but Miss Queen came
back at her after the turn to square the tie and then edge ahead, winning
on the 17th green. Lesley had beaten the 1996 champion, Anne Prentice
(Bothwell CAstle) by 4 and 2 in the other semi-final.
Clare Queen had established herself as the top seed with a one-over-par
round of 73 to lead the 16 qualifiers for the match-play stages by five

all on 78. Lesley gained the No 2 seed berth on a card countback.
