CLAIRE WINS DUNBARTONSHIRE TITLE
Claire McNeil (Milngavie) won the Dunbartonshire & Argyll women's county
golf championship for the first time at Windyhill Golf Club. Claire, the
seventh qualifier, beat the No 1 seed and another teenager, Ashley Kerr,
playing over her home course, by one hole. Ashley had been two up on the
outward half but Claire gradually pulled her back and went one up at the
16th. The last two holes were halved.
In the semi-finals, Miss McNeil had beaten the No 2 qualifier, Lucy Atter
(Lochgilphead) on the 18th green
Three of the four semi-finalists are juniors _ Claire McNeil, Ashley Kerr
and Judy Galbraith (Cowal), last year's beaten finalist _ which augurs
well for the county.
The bronze championship was won by F Kay of the home club. She beat J
Sinclair (Hilton Park) by one hole in the final.
In atrocious weather, Ashley headed the qualifiers with a round of 82
and received a bye in the first round of the match-play as there were
only 15 qualifiers. A small field, two No Returns and the retiral injured
of another player, led to the absence of a 16th qualifier.
Last year's champion Anne Laing (Vale of Leven), a member of the LGU Elite
Squad, could not defend her title due to work commitments, which also
applied to fellow Scottish international Claire Hargan (Cardross) and
Sara Bishop (Windyhill). Louisa Ruane's university studies ruled her out
of the field.
