2002 COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS Reports by Colin Farquharson Ayrshire champion Sharon plays 42 holes on final day SHARON Lambie (Troon Ladies) won the Ayrshire women’s county championship, played over the Turnberry Kintyre course, for a third time, following up her successes in 1998 and 1999. She was also beaten finalist in 2000. Miss Lambie, a former tour professional, came through a knee-buckling 42 holes on the third and final day before being crowned champion again. In the semi-final, Miss Lambie, the No 2 qualifier, went to the 22nd before squeezing past former champion and last year's beaten finalist, Catherine Malcolm (Prestwick St Cuthbert). Then, in a final, in which there was never more than a hole in it either way, a weary Miss Lambie summoned up her last reserves of stamina to beat Gillian Lockhart (Kilmarnock Barassie) with a par at the 20th. Miss Lockhart, the No 5 qualifier, was contesting the final for the first time after knocking out the No 1 seed, Audrey Thompson (Loudoun) by 4 and 3 in the semi-final. Defending champion Liz Keohone (Loudoun) qualified in sixth place but lost in the first round of the match-play.
