Ayrshire champion Sharon plays 42 holes on final day
SHARON Lambie (Troon Ladies) won the Ayrshire womens county championship,
played over the Turnberry Kintyre course, for a third time, following
up her successes in 1998 and 1999. She was also beaten finalist in 2000.
Miss Lambie, a former tour professional, came through a knee-buckling
42 holes on the third and final day before being crowned champion again.
In the semi-final, Miss Lambie, the No 2 qualifier, went to the 22nd
before squeezing past former champion and last year's beaten finalist,
Catherine Malcolm (Prestwick St Cuthbert).
Then, in a final, in which there was never more than a hole in it either
way, a weary Miss Lambie summoned up her last reserves of stamina to beat
Gillian Lockhart (Kilmarnock Barassie) with a par at the 20th.
Miss Lockhart, the No 5 qualifier, was contesting the final for the first
time after knocking out the No 1 seed, Audrey Thompson (Loudoun) by 4
and 3 in the semi-final.
Defending champion Liz Keohone (Loudoun) qualified in sixth place but
lost in the first round of the match-play.
