Sammy Vass (89) struggles on debut for
Central Florida on trip to Kentucky
North of Scotland girls champion Sammy Vass from Tain had a disappointing debut first-round appearance for the University of Central Florida (UCF) in the Bettie Lou Evans Fall Invite college tournament at the University Club of Kentucky, Lexington.
Not in the UCF team of five, but taken along to play as an individual and gain experience, Sammy, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, is sharing last place in the field of 82 with a round of 89, which included one triple bogey and three double bogeys.
There are two more rounds to go, weather permitting.
Leading the field was Macarena Silva (Florida State) from Chile with 70, two better than Australian Emma de Groot (Chattanooga), Valdis Jonsdottir (Texas State) from Iceland and Victoria Tomko (UCF).
Steph Gough (Middle Tennessee State) from Aylesbury was the best placed British student, being one of eight players sharing fifth place on 74.
Lauren Blease (Florida International) from Kingston, Surrey is sharing 41st place on 78.
Team-mate Nikki Dunn from Harrogate, Yorkshire had an 82 to be joint 63rd. Nikki too had her problems - a double bogey 5 at the short eighth, a triple bogey 6 at the short 12th and a double bogey 7 at the long 16th but she did get two of these shots back with birdies at the long fifth and 18th.
Saturday's second round was cancelled because of bad weather. The final round, which was going to be the third, will be played on Sunday.
