Hertfordshire’s Hannah Burke leads English

stroke-play championship

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Hertfordshire’s Hannah Burke shot two-under par 70 today to take the halfway lead in the English women’s open strokeplay championship at Enmore Park, Somerset.
Hannah is level for the first 36 holes of the championship and one shot ahead of Lancashire’s Cori Lee, who also beat par with a second round 71. They lead a total of 36 players into the final day’s play after the cut was made on 158, 14-over par. Better weather on the second day of the championship – with plenty of sunshine and no wind – encouraged good scoring, although the course continued to play long. Gloucestershire’s Charlotte Ellis, who shared the lead after the first round, is currently third.
The other overnight leaders, Charlotte Dalton of Warwickshire and Monique Smit of South Africa, are both well placed, sharing sixth place.
Other players at the top end of the leaderboard include 2008 English champion Hannah Barwood of Gloucestershire and the Cheshire pair, Charlotte Wild and 14-year-old Bronte Law. Meanwhile the host club’s Hannah Grant qualified comfortably in 12th place. Hannah Burke began her move with birdies on the second and third holes.
“That was a good start and then I was steady for the rest of the round. I kept going, trying to par everything and I holed a couple of good putts.”
Hannah, who finished her round with two birdies in the last three holes, is coming to the end of her summer in England and in two week’s time will return to Baylor University in Texas.
Her successful college golf has helped hone her strokeplay skills and she tied for the Irish open strokeplay championship, losing only after a seven-hole sudden death play-off. She also led pre-qualifying for the Ricoh Women’s British Open.
