Top seed Pamela Pretswell was knocked out of the 95th Scottish women's closed amateur championship in the second round of the match-play stages at Southerness Golf Club this afternoon.
The reigning Swiss women's open amateur champion, Pamela was beaten 3 and 2 by the 16th qualifier, Carol Wilson (Murcar Links).
Pamela, one of the backmarkers in the championship with +2 of a handicap, had scored the lowest round in each of the qualifying rounds (76-72), for which she collected a lot of silverware at Tuesday night's presentation of prizes in the Southerness clubhouse.
Aberdeenshire county player Carol, pictured above, is in her early 30s and the daughter of last year's SLGA chairman, Pat Wilson, has a handicap of three and had a qualifying total of 161 (79-82) compared to Pretswell's 148.
But match-play golf is a great leveller.
Pamela, a 20-year-old Glasgow University student, was apparently nursing a sore shoulder today but the West of Scotland champion from Bothwell Castle would be the last to put that forward as an excuse for this major form upset.
There must be a jinx on leading qualifiers in this championship in recent years.
Last year's top seed at Lossiemouth, Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar), was beaten by the 32nd qualifier, Sammy Vass (Tain) in the first round of the match-play.
Later, on an afternoon of shock results, 14-year-old Lesley Atkins (Minto) beat the No 3 qualifier, Katy McNicoll (Carnoustie Ladies) by two holes ... and former Scottish champion Elaine Moffat (St Regulus) - 1998 at North Berwick - beat Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar), the Scottish Under-21 champion, by 4 and 3.
