French lady junior championship at St Cloud

Title-holder Rachel is only

English qualifier

If England's youngsters had a joy day in the Scottish Under-16 girls' open at Craigielaw, their elders did not do so well in the second qualifying round of the French lady junior championship at Paris St Cloud Golf Club.
Defending champion Rachel Jennings, pictured by courtesy of Tom Ward Photography, made her way comfortably into the leading 32 who qualifyied for the match-play stages. She had rounds of 75 and level par 71 - her second round including an eagle and two birdies - for a total of 146.
That was six shots behind the top seed Mireia Prat from France with 73 and 67 for 140.
Her first round opponent is Laura Chemarin of France, who qualified in 23rd place.
Rachel, 20, from Izaak Walton Golf Club in Staffordshire, is England’s sole survivor in the championship match-play for the Esmond Trophy.
The cut-off mark was seven-over-par 149 or better.
Lincolnshire’s Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) was 45th overall with scores of 78 and 74 for 152.
That put her into the knock-out stages of the Cartier Trophy, contested by the top 16 players, aged 18 and under, who failed to qualify for the Esmond Trophy.
Holly will play Camilla Hedberg Bertrand of Spain in the first round.
There was disappointment for the other four members of the English Women’s Golf Association squad who failed to qualify for the match-play events.
British girls championship finalist at Monifieth last summer, Kelly Tidy (Royal Birkdale) slumped from a good first round of 73 to an 80 today and failed to make the grade with 155.
So too did Alex Peters (Notts Ladies) with 79 and 76 for 155.
English women's champion Hannah Barwood totalled 156 with 77 and 79 while Rachel Connor (Manchester) had scores of 79 and 84 for 163.
The Irish wonder twins, Lisa and Leona Maguire did very well indeed to qualify in fifth and sixth places in the championship flight. Lisa scopred 74 and 70 for 144, the same total as Leona who did it the other way round, 70 followed by a 74.
