Junior Orange Bowl International Golf Tournament
PRESS RELEASE
By DAVID MACKINTOSH
CORAL GABLES, FLORIDA: The 45th edition of this prestigious junior golf tournament starts tomorrow at its traditional venue, the Biltmore Hotel GC, that famed Donald Ross lay-out in Coral Gables, Florida.
As usual this 72-hole stroke-play tournament features outstanding talent from around the globe. Many winners have gone on to stardom on the US PGA and LPGA Tours, not least Tiger Woods, the 1991 champion.
This year the average handicap in the Boys' Division is above + 2.0 and the girls not far behind. Expect a tough battle between South Florida’s Alexis Thompson, at 13 the USGA Junior champion, Argentina’s highly-rated 14-year old Victoria Tanco, France’s Emilie Alonzo and Victoria Kiser.
Sixteen-year old Kiser from Orlando won a spot in this year’s LPGA Tour School but after qualifying in two stages was advised she could not compete in the final because of her age.
In the boys' division a plethora of talent includes Germany’s Stephan Wolters, 16, handicap +4.9 and Michael Cromie, 17, a +4.5 from North Carolina. Stern competition will come from Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo, highest-ranked US player T.J Vogel and 17-year old Pedro Figueiredo, the Portuguese National Amateur Championship.
