Graham Thomson reports on Daily Telegraph Junior Championships
Carly turns on the heat to go
six shots clear in Abu Dhabi
and Oliver Huish shoots a 66, the best round of the tournament
Thanks to Abu Dhabi-based oil executive Graham Thomson, father of Scottish champion and Curtis Cup player Michele, we can give you TODAY'S news from the Daily Telegraph Junior Golf Championship Finals.
Graham writes:
Temperature was up in the mid-30s today especially about lunchtime when the girls were finishing their second rounds.
"Carly Booth stretched her lead today to six shots with a four-under-par round of 68 and now sits at six-under-par 138.
"Hannah Barwood and Alex Peters are sharing second place on level par 144. Hannah had a 71 today and Alex has had a couple of par 72s. Katherine O'Connor was lying second until she had a double bogey at the last hole for a 74 and a 36-hole tally of 145.
"Carly is playing very steadily and her length is allowing her to get home at all par-5s in two shots over this 5800yd ladies' course.
"Kelsey MacDonald improved by four shots with a one-under 71 today and is in sixth place on two-over 146. It could have been so much better because she was four under par for 12 holes.
"Kelsey then went double bogey, bogey, bogey, bogey, birdie, birdie, finishing up with a bag of seven birdies - more than Carly Booth had! Most of her shots dropped were three-putts greens.
"Carly is playing well and unless someone makes a real move over the first nine holes in Sunday's final round, she should win the title for the second year in a row quite convincingly.
"Girls are now off to a skills challenge competition which was being run by Andrew Coltart."
In the boys' championship, the lone Scot, Oliver Huish, son of the North Berwick professional David Huish who is retiring next April, shot the best round of the tournament so far - a six-under-par 66. Oliver improved by 12 shots with this great effort and is now on level par with 18 holes to go.
Huish had an eagle and five birdies to soar up the boys' leaderboard.
His only shot dropped was at the challenging par-3 15th where the tee shot has to carry water all the way to the green. Having done the difficult part, Oliver three-putted.
The Scot is now in fourth place, nine strokes behind leader Tommy Fleetwood (Formby Hall).
Master Huish said: "After the first day I was nowhere in the tournament and had nothing to lose. I wanted to prove that I could at least play golf."
Fleetwood, the overnight leader, came under pressure from Sunningdale's Stiggy Hodgson, a winner in Scotland this autumn in The Duke of York Young Champions' tournament over the testing Dundonald Links.
Hodgson drew level with three holes to play but Fleetwood showed his class with birdies at the 16th and 18th to go two shots clear again. Both boys returned four-under-par 68s in the second round.
Fleetwood was not happy with his effort. "I hit some good shots but I also had some horrendous ones," he said.
