Scott survive third-round Futures School cut
US college amateur Pernilla Lindberg (69) of Bollnas, Sweden, and LPGA Tour member Hannah Jun (68) of San Diego, Calif., lead all players heading into the final round of the Duramed FUTURES Tour 2009 Qualifying Tournament at 12-under-par 204.
Sixteen-year-old amateur Victoria Kiser (70) of Orlando, Fla., is five strokes back in solo third at 7-under-par 209.
First-round leader Maria Hernandez (70) of Pamplona, Spain, Jieun Oh (73) of Jejudo, South Korea, and Molly Birmingham (70) of Cornelius, N.C., are tied for fourth at 5-under-par 211.
A total of 94 players made the 54-hole cut at 8-over-par 224, with the remaining field to play tomorrow's final round at Cleveland Heights Golf Course.
They included Glasgow's Gemma Webster, a student at Ohio State, who got back on track with a good third round ... Brenda McLarnon, the Belfast tour pro who has been a regular on the Futures Tour circuit since she graduated from a US college ... and Anna Scott from Consett, Co Durham, a student at Georgia University.
Huntington Hills Golf and Country Club surrendered the low round of the day to amateur Natalie Sheary (67) of West Hartford, Conn. Sheary, a sophomore at Wake Forest University, was runner-up at the 2008 CIGNA Golf Classic in Bloomfield, Conn.
LPGA Tour member Taylor Leon (68) of Dallas carded the low round at Cleveland Heights and three players posted a 3-under-par 69 at Imperial Lakes Country Club.
Extra excitement surrounded Huntington Hills as the course also gave up the qualifier's fourth hole-in-one, this time to 2008 Tour member Benedikte "Boo" Grotvedt of Nesbru, Norway. Grotvedt used a 6-iron from 166 yards on the par-3, 11th hole. It was her third career ace in tournament play and second since the Tour's stop in Hammond, Ind., where she aced the par-3, 17th hole at Lost Marsh Golf Course.
"I saw the ball start rolling toward the hole and saw it go in and disappear," Grotvedt said. "I was going to use a 7-iron, but my caddie wanted to use 6-iron to make sure it went to the back of the green. Caddie gets the credit for this one."
Stephanie Godare of Conroy, Texas, amateur Jessica Hauser of Hartland, Wis., and Mizuyo Tanaka of Tokyo, Japan, carded respective aces this week.
Kiser fired another sub-par round, this time at Cleveland Heights. She made a 35-foot birdie putt off the edge of the green, making the turn on No. 1 and adding birdies on No. 3 and 13.
"I hit the ball really well and didn't make too many mistakes," said the 16-year-old Kiser. "I feel really good about my overall game and I can tell my short game has gotten a lot better this week."
Kiser says she feels fortunate to enjoy the comfort of her own bed this week, traveling 45 minutes away from home in Orlando. The Florida teen was a four-time winner on the American Junior Golf Association this season and was named the Future Collegians World Tour Player of the Year. The homeschooled Kiser is 16th in Golfweek's junior rankings.
"I've felt like my game has held up out here this week and right now everything is pretty solid," Kiser said.
Lindberg was consistent for another round, this time finding red numbers at Imperial Lakes Country Club. After recording a career-low 6-under-par 66 at Huntington Hills on Wednesday, Lindberg hopes her return to Cleveland Heights will be as effective as when she drained six birdies in Tuesday's first round at The Heights.
"Today, it felt different from the past two days because I was hitting the ball just OK," said Lindberg, a senior at Oklahoma State University. "I had to save a lot of pars, but thanks to some good putting, it turned out to be a pretty good round. It's great to be shooting low scores, but I still have to stay away from the bogeys."
Amateur Jane Chin (76) of Mission Viejo, Calif., ripped through Huntington Hills in Wednesday's second round with a 6-under-par 66, equaling her career-best round. Chin has won three out of four events this season with UC-Irvine and is currently the top-ranked collegian in the Golfstat Cup rankings and second-ranked player in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.
Jun pulled even for the lead at Huntington Hills, carding five birdies and one bogey.
"All three courses have a lot of opportunities for birdies," Jun said. "I feel good about where I am and had a lot of good chances on the tee to the green. I was hitting them close all day, I don't think I missed a green."
Chin was prodded by former UC-Irvine teammate SeLanee Henderson of Apple River, Calif., to enter this week's qualifier. A fifth-year senior, Chin redshirted last year to step away from golf and correct some problems with her driver. Henderson qualified for the final stage of LPGA Q-School at sectionals in Venice, Fla.
A fatigued Chin finished Thursday's round at 4-over-par 76, to drop back into a five-way tie for 11th.
"I had a few mental mistakes today, but I'm hitting the ball really well," Chin said. "I haven't lost any confidence, but I three-putted four times coming in today."
Final-round play begins Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. off the first and 10th tees at Cleveland Heights. The leading foursome of Lindberg, Jun, Kiser and Birmingham will tee off at 9:20 a.m.
