first win for Jacksonville State

Portia Abbott from Wiltshire has scored her first win on the American women's college circuit.
A final-year student at Jacksonville State University, Portia strung together three steady rounds of 71, 74 and 73 for a two-over-par total of 218 to win the Fred Marx Invitational at Bayou Desiard Country Club, Monroe in Louisiana.
She won by three shots from Sara Larsson (Louisiana-Monroe) (74-72-75) over a par-72, 5895yd course. Portia's previous highest finish in the States was a third place in 2006.
Shirley Harvey from Belfast, a senior student at South Alabama University finished joint 21st with scores of 79, 78 and 79 for a total of 236.
Essex-born Laura Cutler, a junior-year team-mate of Portia Abbott at JSU, tied for 36th place in a field of 56 with scores of 84, 77 and 80 for 241.
With no close back-up for Portia Abbott, Jacksonville State (918) could finish only third in the team title chase behind Samford (896) and Central Arkansas (917). South Alabama (944) came seventh of the 11 competing teams.
