England crash 4-1 to Spain in Euro
senior women's team semi-finals

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
England were beaten 4-1 by Spain in the semi-finals of the European seniors’ amateur team championship at Wouwse Plantage in the Netherlands today and will play-off against France for the bronze medal.
"It’s really, really disappointing, but we will pick ourselves up and go for bronze," said captain Cathy Bowerbank, whose team has won the silver medal for the past two years.
"We were very comfortable through the turn and up to about the 14th but Spain just got it together at the end. They were all very tight matches."
England’s foursomes pair, Carolyn Kirk and Christine Stirling, went to the 20th before they lost to a birdie. They had been unfortunate not to win on both the 18th and 19th where decisive putts stubbornly hung on the edge of the hole.
When Janet Collingham and Christine Watson were both beaten on the 18th green the match was over. The final two games were recorded as halves, although both looked to be going comfortably England’s way.
"It wasn’t the result anyone was expecting because we have a very strong team. But it wasn’t meant to be," said Cathy.
Sweden’s 3-2 victory over defending champions, France, was also a surprise. They now play Spain in the final to decide the gold medal
