England girl international Heidi Baek ended the local challenge of Rebecca McGinley in the English girls’ championship at Durham City today.
Heidi, who won the 2007 English Under-15 girls’ title, hit fine form in both her matches. She was round in level par in her first round match and was two-under when she defeated Durham girls’ champion Rebecca McGinley on the 14th. She now plays her friend and No 2 seed Abbey Gittings from Walmley, Warwickshire.
Next week Heidi will be on duty for England in the Girls’ International Matches at Panmure, Carnoustie.
Meanwhile, Kent’s Sian Evans (Faversham) knocked out top seed Jessica Wilcox of Blankney, Lincolnshire, with a 2 and 1 win in the second round. Jessica is a boarder at Loretto School, Mussleburgh.
“We both played really well,” said Sian who made a crucial breakthrough in the tight match with birdies on the 14th and 15th. They took her to two up and although she lost the 16th she closed out the match with an impressive par on the 17th, getting up and down from 60 yards. Cheshire’s Charlotte Wild (Mere) continued her good season by beating girl international Holly Clyburn 3 and 2 in the second round. Already this season Charlotte has retained the Cheshire girls’ championship, won the Northern Foursomes and been third in the Irish stroke-play championship.
The other quarter-finalists are Rachael Goodall (Heswall), Nikki Dunn (Harrogate), Sarah Tyson (Redlibbets) and Giorgina Brown (Mere) who won both her matches at the 19th.
Play in the second flight matches was suspended when torrential rain flooded the greens. The players will return at 7.30am to complete their matches.

Lauren Taylor wins English U-15 girls’ championship
Warwickshire’s Lauren Taylor claimed her second national title in a week when she won the English Under-15 girls’ championship by two shots at Ramside, Durham. The 13-year-old from Rugby secured her win with a one-under par 73 in the final round, which was played in torrential rain.
A week ago Lauren also won the Under-18 title at the English women's stroke-play championship at The Berkshire.
“It’s great – two titles in one week and I really did want to win this one,” said Lauren, who was playing in the event for the first time. She shared the lead through the first 36 holes but moved three shots clear of the field with her third round 76.
In the final round she went out of bounds on the first hole and started double-bogey, bogey. But she didn’t get rattled. “I don’t think about what anyone else is doing. I just play my own game,” she said.
She soon repaired the damage with birdies on the fourth and eighth to reach the turn at one over par. Three more birdies on the back nine helped her come home in two-under 34.
Meanwhile, Lancashire’s Emily Taylor also returned a sub-par score of two-under 72 in the difficult conditions and claimed second place .
She’s a member at Royal Lytham & St Annes and said: “I like the rain – we get it a lot at home and wind! I was very pleased considering the weather. I held my nerve well and managed to keep everything dry which was the main thing.”
Emily has come down from seven to four handicap already this season.
