Lauren and Hayley share first-round
lead in English Under-15 girls
PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Warwickshire’s Lauren Taylor and Dorset’s Hayley Davis share the first round lead in the English Under-15 girls' championship at Ramside, Durham, after they both shot one-under par 73.
They hold a one-shot lead over Charlotte Thomas (Singapore Island) and are a further stroke ahead of a group of four players.
Lauren, 13, is fresh from a success in last week’s English stroke-play championship where she won the Under-18 title.
“I got a lot experience there from playing with the top players,” said Lauren, who is a member at Rugby Golf Club and of the English Women’s Golf Association’s Midlands B Select Squad.
In her opening round in this event she played the first 14 holes in immaculate style, with three birdies and 11 pars. On the 15th, a 140yd par-3, she flew the green with her eight-iron and her shot finished in the water, en route to a double bogey.
“I didn’t think I could hit it that far – but I bounced straight back with a birdie on the next hole,“ said Lauren, who then dropped a shot on the 18th. “I’m really pleased, but I’ve got to keep it going,” she said.
Hayley,15, was in very similar form. She birdied the first hole, eagled the par-5 fourth - and also stood on the 15th tee at three-under. She, too, double bogeyed the hole and then birdied the 16th before dropping another shot on the 17th.
Hayley plays at Ferndown and is a member of EWGA’s Select Southwest squad. She’s a reserve for England’s team for the girls’ international matches and recently recorded the best qualifying scores in the Southswst championship.
After the second qualifying round the field will be cut to the leading 36 players and ties who will play the 36-hole final rounds on Thursday.
