Phil Wylie, the oldest surviving Curtis Cup player on either side of the Atlantic, had a dream come true this evening when she entered the R&A clubhouse to attend the Past Curtis Cup Players' Dinner ... and she was able to hold the Curtis Cup in her grasp.
Phil, who has lived in Troon for more than 30 years, was English amateur champion as Phil Wade in the mid-1930s and she was first reserve in attendance for the third Curtis Cup match ever played - at Gleneagles in 1936.
Two years later, at Essex CC, Manchester, Massachusetts, Phil Wade played for Great Britain & Ireland against the United States. The Americans won 5 1/2-3 1/2.
Also in the GB&I team were Jessie Anderson, Nan Baird, Elsie Corlett, Helen Holm, Clarrie Tiernan and J B Walker.
The US line-up was: Patty Berg, Charlotte Glutting Kathryn Hemphill, Marion Miley Maureen Orcutt, Estelle Lawson Page and Glenna College Vare.
Phil Wylie will be 97 on August the 12th. Remember to send her a birthday card c/o Ladies Troon Golf Club!
