Irish Ladies Golf Union Press Release
2007 LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR FINAL QUALIFYING SCHOOL
MARTINA GILLEN THROUGH TO FINAL DAY
Martina Gillen’s hopes of retaining her Ladies European Tour Card for the 2008 season received a significant boost following a third round 71 to lie in tenth place, five shots off the lead, at the LET Final Qualifying School, Le Fonti Golf Club in Italy today.
Gillen’s steady outward stretch saw her bogey the fifth but three birdies in the final six holes saw her sign for a gutsy 71, eight shots inside the qualifying cut after 54 holes. Barring a disastrous final round, she should pass safely into the top 30 tomorrow evening.
Claire Coughlan was heart-breakingly just one shot too many in her attempt to retain her card for the coming season. Birdies at eight, 10 and 13 saw the Cork girl stride into the home stretch but two dropped shots over the final three holes cost her dearly.
Ireland’s third representative, Hazel Kavanagh, added a 75 to her opening brace of 74s to also miss out on qualification for the final round. Birdies on the first and 17th holes added a glimmer of hope but a wretched double-bogey at the last quenched her aspirations.
A total of 52 from the starting field of 94 competitors contest the final 18 holes on Friday with the top 30 after the fourth round securing Category 8 membership of the 2008 Ladies European Tour.
Players who finish in positions 31 through 50 will receive Category 10b membership, with some playing restrictions.
