LGU TRAINING SQUAD NAMED
FOR 2008 TEAM EVENTS
The nine members of the team that narrowly lost to the Continent of Europe in the match for the Vagliano Trophy, form the nucleus of the 18-strong squad selected by the Ladies’ Golf Union for close season preparation for 2008 team events, notably the Curtis Cup at St Andrews from 30 May to 1 June.
Four of that team, Tara Delaney, Naomi Edwards, Breanne Loucks and Melissa Reid, played in the 2006 Curtis Cup match at Bandon Dunes and are certain to be at the forefront of selection when the team is announced next year.
Gillian Kirkwood, Chairman of the International Selection Committee said: “We have named a bigger squad than usual – 18 players – as five of them are U.S. based and one in Germany and these six might be unable to attend every session.
“It is an exceptionally strong squad and every player will have a realistic chance of being selected, even the younger players who this year have performed really well.
“Two in particular had an outstanding Home International series at Dunbar, Rachel Jennings of England totalling five and a half points out of six and 15-year-old Carly Booth winning 5 points out of six for Scotland. In the same week, Sally Watson, Henrietta Brockway and Florentyna Parker were in the winning European Junior Solheim Cup team in Sweden.
“Curtis Cup Captain, Mary McKenna, and the Training Committee have devised a preparation programme which features a lot of competitive play, and the Selectors will be looking at results over the winter, as well as past performances when we come to select the GB&I Curtis Cup team in early Spring of next year.”
